This effect is believed to be due to the increased radiation in the ore coupled with the faster rate of fading of low-temperature thermoluminescence compared to high-temperature thermoluminescence. Both the ratios of thermoluminescent responses from any of a variety of temperature ranges and glow curves (plots of intensity of thermoluminescence versus temperature) can be used to detect the increased importance of high-temperature thermoluminescence relative to low-temperature thermoluminescence of previously mineralized samples. These sections were measured prior to 1960, before adoption of the metric system. Publication was delayed by other assignments of the authors and later by the untimely death of J. C. Wright. They are being released at this time because of the increased interest in the uranium potential of Jurassic rocks. The Summerville, Curtis, Entrada, and Carmel Formations are the formations of the San Rafael Group present in these sections.

From July 28 through December 20, 1975, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted a high-resolution geophysical survey on the Upper Continental Slope in the Gulf of Mexico north of Latitude 26°N. The survey was limited to water depths between 100 m and 1000 m with seismic lines spaced from 7.5 to 18.5 km apart in a reconnaissance grid pattern. The data were collected by Western Geophysical Company of America under an exclusive contract with the Geological Survey.

During a short visit to the headquarters of the Interstate Commission for the Araguaia-Tocantins Valley and to several stream-gaging stations in June 1964, the author reviewed the status of the streamflow and meteorological data-collection programs in relation to the streamflow and meteorological data-collection programs in relation to the pressing needs of development project studies. To provide data for areal and project-site studies and for main-stream sites, an initial network of 33 stream gaging stations was proposed, including the 7 stations then in operation. Suggestions were made in regard to operations, staffing and equipment. Organizational responsibilities for operations were found to be divided uncertainly. The Brazilian Meteorological Service had 15 synoptic stations in operation in and near the basin, some in need of reconditioning. Plans were at hand for the addition of 15 sites to the synoptic network and for limited data collection at 27 other sites. The author proposed collection of precipitation data at about 50 other locations to achieve a more representative areal distribution. Temperature, evaporation, and upper-air data sites were suggested to enhance the prospective hydrometeorological studies. The San Juan Basin in the southeastern part of the Colorado Plateau, southwest of the San Juan Mountains, broadly includes the Acoma and Gallup Sags in its southern part and the small Chama Basin in its northeastern part. Regionally, the water-yielding strata (aquifers) dip inward toward the center of San Juan Basin or toward the axes of the adjoining structural sags. Aquifers exposed or at shallow depths along the margin of the basin are deeply buried in the center of the basin.

The occurrence and movement of ground water is strongly influenced by the structural configuration of the basin; fractures along joints and faults, particularly the Puerco fault belt; distribution and lithology of the rock strata, and the relationship of the uplands recharge areas of the aquifers to the lowland areas where the most ground-water discharges.

The aggregate thickness of sedimentary rocks is more than 10,000 feet in the deepest part of the basin. In order of decreasing abundance, these rocks consist of mudstone, claystone, siltstone, sandstone, silty sandstone, coal, limestone, conglomerate, and gypsum. The main aquifers consist of sandstone or sandstone containing lenses of conglomerate except for the San Andres Limestone.

The principal aquifers, listed in descending stratigraphic order, are the Tertiary Cuba Mesa and Llaves Members of the San Jose Formation and the Ojo Alamo Sandstone; the Pictured Cliffs, Cliff House, Point Lookout, Gallup, and Dakota Sandstones; the Westwater Canyon and Salt Wash Sandstone Members of the Morrison Formation, the Cow Springs Sandstone, the Zuni Sandstone, and the Entrada Sandstone; and the San Andres Limestone, Glorieta Sandstone, and De Chelly Sandstone. These aquifer are separated by formations, that do not readily transmit water between the aquifers.

Regional movement of ground water is mainly to the San Juan and Chaco s Rivers, the Puerco River, the Rio Puerco, and their main tributaries. Ground water from aquifers overlying the Dakota Sandstone discharge within the confines of the San Juan hydrologic basin. Part of the ground water in the Dakota Sandstone, Morrison Formation, and underlying formations moves across the interbasin divide into the Black Mesa, the Blanding Basin, or to the Rio Grande Trough.

Water levels in the Pompano Beach and Dixie well fields were lower during the peak of the 1976 dry season than the peak of the record low dry season in 1971. Flow in the major canals was variable during the 1976 water year compared to 1962-75 averages. Flows in Cypress Creek, Middle River, and Snake Creek at S-29 were higher than the average. Flows in Plantation Canal and South New River were equal to the 1962-75 averages, while Hillsboro, North New River, and Snake Creek at N.W. 67th Avenue were below the long-term averages. The concentrations of principal mineral constituents in surface water in Broward County were within limits established by Florida State Water Standards, with the exception of iron at one station. Total coliforms were equal to or within permissible limits for class III water and waters for public supply in Broward canals at all sites during the 1976 water year. An inventory of lakes and reservoirs in Oregon is useful in evaluating the surface-water supply of the State and in providing answers to questions about Oregon's lakes. Much of the information on lakes and reservoirs previously collected by Federal and State agencies has never been published. Those data were compiled and used as a basis for collecting additional information. This report provides information for use by city, county, and State planning groups in planning interpretative studies. The information also will be useful to sportsmen, tourists, and others interested in preserving the recreational value of Oregon's lakes.

Because of the large number of lakes and reservoirs in Oregon, a single report covering the State would be bulky. Therefore, lake information is being issued in several volumes on a county or multicounty basis. Volume 1, released in 1973 covered Clatsop, Columbia, and Tillamook Counties; volume 2 (1974) included Benton, Lincoln, and Polk Counties; volume 3 (1975) included Hood River, Multnomah, Washington, and Yamhill Counties; volume 4 (1976) included Clackamas County; and volume 5 (1977) included Marion County. Douglas County was selected for volume 6. (See figure 1.)

In addition to office compilation of existing data, each lake was visited. Most visits were made in summer or early fall when lakes were most accessible and when water temperature and biological activity were near maximum.

The purpose of this report is to derive several of the basic equations for a paper on folding and folding of idealized rock (Johnson, 1979). That paper is based on constitutive equations for an ideal, strain-hardening material defined by Hill (1950, p. 30) and generalized to include Coulomb behavior and dilatancy by Rudnicki and Rice (1975). The most attractive feature of the theory is that folding and faulting, which are intimately related in nature, are different responses of the same material to different boundary conditions. In the paper by Johnson (1979) it is shown that single layers of sedimentary rocks are unlikely to fold, rather they will fault, because of low contrasts in elasticity and strength properties of sedimentary rocks such as layers of dolomite, limestone, sandstone, or siltstone in media of shale. Further, multi-layers of these same rocks will fault rather than fold if contacts are bonded, but they will fold readily if contacts between layers are frictionless, or have low yield strengths, for example due to high pore-water pressure. These conclusions are based on solutions of the equations presented in the following pages, using experimental stress-strain curves for various rock types.

This report lists in tabular form: 61 drainage areas in the Twelvepole Creek basin, of West Virginia, 11 drainage areas of the Big Sandy River basin within West Virginia, and 210 drainage areas in the Tug Fork basin of Virginia, Kentucky, and West Virginia. Drainage areas were compiled in a downstream direction, at the mouth of all streams having drainage areas of approximately 5 square miles and for sites at U. S. Geological Survey gaging stations. The site or measuring point for each basin can be located by stream mile measured upstream from the mouth, by county, by quadrangle, or by latitude and longitude.
