Geotechnical data from the published and unpublished literature are compiled in SI units and tabulated in a standardized format. Eight data sets are presented from a geographic area approximately bounded by 5° and 32° north latitude and 120° and 170° west longitude. The data exist in machine-readable form in the data bank of the Marine Geotechnical Laboratory, Lehigh University.
\nIndividual geotechnical property data from cores collected from DOMES sites A, B, and C--including cores collected from the Deepsea Ventures mine site, are grouped and plotted against depth below the seafloor. A least-squares regression predictor equation for each grouped property related to depth is presented together with related statistical data for the equations. Low correlation coeficients for each of the predictor equations, except for \"undisturbed\" and remolded shear strength, suggest that improved predictor equations may result by grouping geotechnical data only for similar sediment types, rather than considering data from several large geographical areas grouped together without regard to differing sediment types within the areas.
\nThe objective of this investigation was to compile existing published, and unpublished marine geotechnical data in a standardized format, keypunched, and entered in the Marine Geotechnical Laboratory (MGL) data bank at Lehigh University. In addition, results of geotechnical analyses of DOMES and Deepsea Ventures cores performed in the MGL were synthesized by developing predictor equations for geotechnical properties of cores, related to a maximum depth below the seafloor of one meter, collected from DOMES sites A, B, and C, and from the Deepsea Ventures mine claim, which includes site C.
\nGeotechnical property data from cores collected on DOMES cruises RP-6- 0C-75 and RP- 8-0C- 76 and from cores provided by Deepsea Ventures, Inc. are presented in separate chapters in this open file report. Data from eight other sources are tabulated in this report. They are from analyses of cores collected in an area of the deep seafloor approximately bounded by 5° and 32° north latitude and 120° and 170° west longitude. This large area includes pelagic clay, calcareous ooze, and siliceous ooze (Frazer et al., 1972). More specific sediment data, which are related to metal content of pelagic nodules for the area, are summarized by Hartmann et al., (1973).
\nKeller and Bennett (1968) and Keller (1969) have reviewed the distribution of sediments, shear strength, water content, and bulk density for the entire North Pacific Ocean basin. These studies provide a regional review that is useful f or orientation before considering the geotechnical properties of the more limited area reported in this paper.

There has been a continuing demand on the part of many persons, institutions, commercial companies, government agencies, and so forth for up-to-date maps and tables of earthquakes in southern California. Unfortunately, final catalogs of earthquakes such as Hileman and others (1973), Hill and others (1975a), and Friedman and others (1976) lag in publication as long as two years beyond the end of the recording periods which they cover, owing to the time-consuming process of re-reading seismograms to improve earthquake locations. It is, thus, the intent of this report to make public a preliminary version of the catalog(s) that will cover the period October 1976 -September 1977. This catalog is similar to that of Fuis and others (1977) which covers a prior period of time from June 1974 -September 1976.
The three most serious problems with this catalog are 1) incomplete reporting of earthquake magnitudes, 2) use of more than one crustal model for locating earthquakes in a given area, and 3) inclusion of blasts. These problems will be corrected for the final catalog(s), but we felt that they should not hold up release of this preliminary catalog.

A number of linear shoals, representing pronounced topographic anomalies on the surface of the Arctic shelf, have been studied in the Prudhoe Bay area. These shoals have been referred to in several previous studies. Based on seismic reflection records, Reimnitz et al., (1972a), stated that the shoals are constructional features younger than the post-Wisconsin transgression. Large chunks of grounded ice have frequently been seen on the linear shoals of the inner shelf. These ice chunks form barriers parallel to the shore (Reimnitz, et al. 1972b). Reimnitz and Barnes (1974) considered the lack of gravel concentrations on the shoals to be evidence that the stream of pack ice drifting past northern Alaska carries very little gravel today. Lewellen (1977) referred to the linear shoals as submerged barrier islands, while Reimnitz, et al., (1977b) pointed out that, although similar in shape to barrier islands, the linear shoals are very different in composition and do not appear to represent drowned harrier islands. They show that the shoals localize the formation of major shear and pressure events in the ice, which in turn cause the formation of linear belts of deformed and grounded ice. Today the shoals appear to be migrating under the influence of ice-bottom interaction, and indeed may have formed in response to ice-bottom interaction within the \"stamukhi zone\". The shoals migrate rather slowly and retain their shapes over periods of 25 years, yet control the location and stabilize the outer edge of the floating fast ice zone, and provide shelter for the inner shelf and coast. Reimnitz et al. (1977b) surmised that similar artificial structures might be used to modify the ice environment on the arctic shelf.

Construction and regular use of a new production well in the area of nitrogen-rich water would temporarily increase the rate of nitrogen removal by causing more rapid flow of water from the silty upper part of the aquifer downward to the more permeable lower part, and by reducing the distance the water must flow through the lower part to the nearest point of withdrawal. After such a well had been in use for several months and the system had adjusted to the new conditions, the rate of further nitrogen removal would depend on the rate at which nitrogen compounds are leached from the soil by infiltrating precipitation. Alternative techniques for speeding the flushing of the aquifer include artificially increasing the amount of infiltration, changing the rates of withdrawal from existing production wells, and pumping shallow low-yield wells in the area of nitrogen-rich water. This report is divided into five principal sections. The first section describes strong-motion instrumentation and strong-motion records. In the second section, a mathematical model for the dynamic response of bridges to strong ground shaking is formulated. The third section describes how analog records scaled by hand can be analyzed. Force levels throughout bridges and mathematical model parameters are found from hypothetical strong motions for two example bridges. The fourth section describes how digitized records can be analyzed. A linear least-squares fitting procedure in the time domain for identifying mathematical model parameters from recorded strong motions is described. Hypothetical motions for three example bridges are analyzed using this procedure to yield best-fit mathematical models. The last section consists of appendices. Included are a more extensive introduction to dynamics of structures and listings of the programs used to identify the best-fit mathematical models.
During 1967-71, 15,800 acres of flood-plain vegetation were cleared from a 26-mile reach of the Gila River valley and a 9-mile reach of the San Carlos River valley. Both areas are on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation, Arizona. The area cleared in the Gila River valley included the Gila River Phreatophyte Project and the clearing was conducted as prescribed by the experimental design of that research program. Establishment of replacement vegetation was attempted on the cleared areas with indifferent success.
The report outlines methods used to remove the vegetation and to discourage its subsequent regrowth. Costs of the clearing operation are given by vegetation type, and descriptions of the procedures used for establishing new vegetation are given.
Clearing and subsequent maintenance of parts of the flood plain were hampered by channel clogging and subsequent flooding of adjacent areas. Part of the area selected for clearing lies within the San Carlos Reservoir. The wide range of water level in the reservoir further aggravated maintenance of an inflow channel. Both draglines and a dredge were used to open a channel to the reservoir. Because the flow of the Gila River is intermittent, vegetation becomes established in the channel at the head of the reservoir during periods of no flow. The report concludes that the presence of the vegetation promotes silt deposition and further clogging. Inflow channel maintenance is a persistent problem that will require well-planned repetitive clearing of vegetation at the head of the reservoir.

The initial network consisted of 18 stations, which were expanded to 20 in 1971, and to 30 in 1973 (Reed and others, 1971, 1972, Quinones, 1975).
In 1974, at the request of the Environmental Quality Board of Puerto Rico, the network was modified to conform with the Environmental Protection Agency National Water Quality Surveillance System. Under the revised concept, monitoring stations were established at sites near the headwaters and mouths of the principal rivers in Puerto Rico. Most of the stations in the p-evious network were located at sites downstream in the valleys in order that the overall water-quality conditions in the principal rivers could be monitored. The purpose of the present network is to monitor changes in water quality between the upstream and downstream stations. The expanded network consisted of 58 stations. During 1976, five had been discontinued. One other was added late in 1976. Progress reports have been published in 1976 (Quinones and others) and 1977 (Quinones and others). Most of the stations in the original network have been maintained, thus providing sore degree of continuity. The monitoring stations used in this report are shown in figure 1 and listed in table 2.
This report summarizes the results of the network operation from July 1976 to August 1977.

Its contents apply to selection of landing sites for spacecraft, planning traverses for vehicles, and to other aspects of planetary exploration that involve numerical expression of topographic form primarily for engineering purposes. The report is divided into three separate sections. Part I treats descriptive and predictive techniques for terrain slope. Part II describes the analysis of fine-scale surface roughness for the NASA Lunar Roving Vehicle, which was first deployed on Apollo mission 15 in the Hadley Rille area of the Moon. Part III applies the method of numerical taxonomy to multivariate characterization of lunar terrain and geologic map units. Although the findings described here are for the Moon only, the approaches and techniques could be used to solve terrain-related problems on any of the terrestrial planets. The author hopes that this study will stimulate further research in both terrestrial and extraterrestrial landscape morphometry.
During July 1977, fifty-one gravity stations were obtained in the Gerlach Extension Known Geothermal Resource Area and vicinity, northwestern Nevada. Elevations for twenty-seven stations were estimated from lake bed topographic contours. Horizontal positions for these stations were determined from topographic maps and vehicle odometer.
