These deposits were mapped and systematically sampled in 1973 to determine their future potential. The sampling program was facilitated by use of a backhoe which dug 1284 m of trenches and 17 pits. Five hundred and eight samples of surficial material were collected from the trenches and pits, and 78 samples were taken from bedrock exposed in the trenches.</p><p>Panning tests indicate that 710,910 m<sup>3</sup> of gold—bearing material containing an average of 0.102 g/m<sup>3</sup> gold are available; the total gold content is 72,268 g. Of this volume higher grade zones containing 263,455 m<sup>3</sup> of auriferous detritus are available; this material averages 0.262 g/m<sup>3</sup> gold and contains about 69,000 g gold. This gold could be recovered with simple washing and concentrating equipment.</p><p>In addition, a substantial amount of lower grade material which might be workable during times of higher gold prices is available in the district. Variation of the 7-day, 10-year low flow from point to point in selected reaches, and the corresponding times of travel, are shown graphically for Wawayanda Creek, Wallkill River, Woodbury-Moodna Creek, and the Fishkill Creek basins. The 7-day, 10-year low flow for the Saw Kill basin, and estimates of the 7-day, 10-year low flow of the Roeliff Jansen Kill at Ancram and of Birch Creek at Pine Hill, are given. Summaries of discharge from Rondout and Ashokan Reservoirs, in Ulster County, are also included. \r\n\r\nMinimum average 7-day, 10-year flow for gaging stations with 10 years or more of record were determined by log-Pearson Type III computation; those for partial-record stations were developed by correlation of discharge measurements made at the partial-record stations with discharge data from appropriate long-term gaging stations. The variation in low flows from point to point within the selected subbasins were estimated from available data and regional regression formula. The average annual inflow for the period 1931-76 was about 2.9 million acre-feet; 1.9 million acre-feet from surface sources, about 900,000 acre-feet from direct precipitation, and about 75,000 acre-feet from ground water. The average annual outflow for the same period, all be evaportion, also was about 2.9 million acre-feet. Storage changes are computed on the basis of changes in the surface level of the lake. During the period of historic record, 1847-1978, the lake surface has fluctuated within a range of about 20 feet but has shown little overall change. The lake surface would have been about 5 feet higher in 1978 than it was in 1947 had there been no consumptive use of water caused by man 's activities in the lake basin. Since 1959 the lake has been divided into two parts by a railroad causeway, which has restricted the natural circulation. This has resulted in a difference of salinity and of surface level across the causeway. The difference in surface level between the two parts of the lake varies seasonally and annually and has been as much as 2.35 feet. The method was tested on six basins where the impervious surface ranged from 11 percent on the least urbanized basin to 40 percent on the most urbanized. Twenty-two of the largest storm events for which peak discharges had been observed were used in the test. After modification of the method for this particular area, results showed an average error of 20 percent, disregarding sign, with an apparent bias of 8 percent. However, uncertainties in some of the data make it impractical to adjust for bias.</p><p>Application of the modified method using data on rainfall, impervious surface, soils, land use, channel slope, length of main channel, and drainage area is described for a hypothetical basin. As an alternative to more complete and complex modeling by digital computer, a peak discharge for drainage design can be calculated by applying the SCS method to a standardized \"design storm\" for a specified recurrence interval.
