Bay-wide species occurrence data sets are summarized. These data show that twenty-seven or more species of SAV are found within the tidal Chesapeake Bay. Seventeen of these are common, and four of those are non-native. The distributions of these SAV species are largely controlled by salinity, resulting in species associations along salinity gradients. There is higher species richness in low salinity SAV communities compared to medium and high salinity areas, but some of the species have wide salinity tolerances and are found in more than one community type. Most low salinity SAV species have expanded their distributions within the Bay, whereas the distributions of medium and high salinity species have either not changed or decreased. Two non-native species (Hydrilla verticillata, Najas minor) have increased their distributions, while the distributions of two nonnative species (Myriophyllum spicatum, Potomogeton crispus) have not been observed to spread. Factors other than salinity that affect SAV community structure include water quality conditions, water movement, sediment quality, temperature, disease, water fowl herbivory, competitive interactions, propagule availability and shading from the invasive floating aquatic vegetation, Trapa natans. Historic declines in SAV abundances and diversity have largely been linked to anthropogenic impacts, although disease and storms have also contributed to episodic alterations to SAV communities.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Chesapeake Bay submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV): A third technical synthesis","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":15,"text":"Monograph"},"language":"English","publisher":"Chesapeake Bay Program","usgsCitation":"Rybicki, N.B., Tanner, C.E., Shields, E.C., Moore, K.A., Kollar, S., Wilcox, D.J., and Engelhardt, K.A., 2016, Shifting patterns in SAV species diversity and community structure, chap. of Chesapeake Bay submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV): A third technical synthesis, p. 6-30.","productDescription":"25 p.","startPage":"6","endPage":"30","ipdsId":"IP-090301","costCenters":[{"id":37277,"text":"WMA - Earth System Processes Division","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":422732,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":422731,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.chesapeakebay.net/what/publications/chesapeake-bay-submerged-aquatic-vegetation-sav-a-third-technical-synthesis","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Chesapeake Bay","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -76.04363165743484,\n 36.8187868897173\n ],\n [\n -75.614355316119,\n 37.95715200596091\n ],\n [\n -75.80417153423681,\n 38.41259170218382\n ],\n [\n -75.87620866466602,\n 39.78137527024407\n ],\n [\n -76.51837962182296,\n 39.76538855694642\n ],\n [\n -77.586973333989,\n 38.46726198075973\n ],\n [\n -76.77209194847646,\n 37.00987652995029\n ],\n [\n -76.04363165743484,\n 36.8187868897173\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rybicki, Nancy B. 0000-0002-2205-7927 nrybicki@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2205-7927","contributorId":2142,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rybicki","given":"Nancy","email":"nrybicki@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":436,"text":"National Research Program - Eastern Branch","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":888377,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Tanner, Christopher E.","contributorId":331653,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Tanner","given":"Christopher","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":79258,"text":"St. Mary's College of Maryland","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":888378,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Shields, Erin C.","contributorId":331654,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Shields","given":"Erin","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":6708,"text":"Virginia Institute of Marine Science","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":888379,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Moore, Kenneth A.","contributorId":140569,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Moore","given":"Kenneth","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":888380,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Kollar, Stanley","contributorId":331655,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Kollar","given":"Stanley","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":79259,"text":"Kollar Environmental Associates","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":888381,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Wilcox, David J.","contributorId":140565,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Wilcox","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":888382,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Engelhardt, Katherina A. Because population performance of these species is also influenced by non-anthropogenic factors, it is important to incorporate all relevant ecological drivers into demographic models. We used design-based sampling and occupancy models to test relationships of environmental factors that influence raptor demographics with re-occupancy of breeding territories by ferruginous hawks (Buteo regalis) across Wyoming, USA, 2011–2013. We also tested correlations of territory re-occupancy with oil and gas infrastructure—a leading cause of habitat modification throughout the range of this species of conservation concern. Probability of re-occupancy was not related to any covariates we investigated in 2011, had a strong negative relationship with cover of sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) in 2012, was slightly higher for territories with artificial platforms than other nest substrates in 2013, and had a positive relationship with abundance of ground squirrels (Urocitellus spp.) that was strong in 2012 and weak in 2013. Associations with roads were weak and varied by year, road-type, and scale: in 2012, re-occupancy probability had a weak positive correlation with density of roads not associated with oil and gas fields at the territory-scale; however, in 2013 re-occupancy had a very weak negative correlation with density of oil and gas field roads near nest sites (≤500 m). Although our results indicate re-occupancy of breeding territories by ferruginous hawks was compatible with densities of anthropogenic infrastructure in our study area, the lack of relationships between oil and gas well density and territory re-occupancy may have occurred because pre-treatment data were unavailable. We used probabilistic sampling at a broad spatial extent, methods to account for imperfect detection, and conducted extensive prey sampling; nonetheless, future research using before-after-control-impact designs is needed to fully assess impacts of oil and gas development on ferruginous hawks.
","language":"English","publisher":"PLOS Altered hydrology in rivers and floodplains has caused changes in stand development and species composition of BLHs. We hypothesize that the driving mechanisms behind these changes are related to the regeneration process because of the complexity of recruitment and the vulnerability of species at that age in development. Here we review the state of our understanding regarding BLH regeneration, and identify potential bottlenecks throughout the stages of seed production, seed dispersal, germination, establishment, and survival. Our process-level understanding of regeneration by seed in BLHs is rudimentary, thus limiting our ability to predict the effects of hydrologic alterations on species composition. By focusing future research on the appropriate stages of regeneration, we can better understand the sources of forest-community transitions across the diverse range of BLH systems.
","language":"English","publisher":"Eagle Hill Institute","doi":"10.1656/058.015.sp907","usgsCitation":"Kroschel, W., King, S.L., and Keim, R., 2016, Tree regeneration by seed in bottomland hardwood forests: A review: Southeastern Naturalist, v. 15, no. sp9, p. 42-60, https://doi.org/10.1656/058.015.sp907.","productDescription":"19 p.","startPage":"42","endPage":"60","ipdsId":"IP-066128","costCenters":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":347462,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"15","issue":"sp9","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":8,"text":"Raleigh PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5a07e98de4b09af898c8cc2a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kroschel, Whitney A.","contributorId":174364,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Kroschel","given":"Whitney A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":716256,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"King, Sammy L. 0000-0002-5364-6361 sking@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5364-6361","contributorId":557,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"King","given":"Sammy","email":"sking@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":716070,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Keim, Richard F.","contributorId":21858,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Keim","given":"Richard F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":716257,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Traditional methods, such as live capture, can be labor-intensive, invasive, and produce low detection rates. Technological advances and new approaches provide opportunities to more effectively survey for species both in terms of accuracy and efficiency than previous methods. We conducted a pilot comparison study of a traditional technique (live-trapping) and 2 novel noninvasive techniques (camera-trapping and ultrasonic acoustic surveys) on detection rates of the federally endangered Carolina northern flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus coloratus) in occupied habitat within the Roan Mountain Highlands of North Carolina, USA. In 2015, we established 3 5 × 5 live-trapping grids (6.5 ha) with 4 camera traps and 4 acoustic detectors systematically embedded in each grid. All 3 techniques were used simultaneously during 2 4-day survey periods. We compared techniques by assessing probability of detection (POD), latency to detection (LTD; i.e., no. of survey nights until initial detection), and survey effort. Acoustics had the greatest POD (0.37 ± 0.06 SE), followed by camera traps (0.30 ± 0.06) and live traps (0.01 ± 0.005). Acoustics had a lower LTD than camera traps (P = 0.017), where average LTD was 1.5 nights for acoustics and 3.25 nights for camera traps. Total field effort was greatest with live traps (111.9 hr) followed by acoustics (8.4 hr) and camera traps (9.6 hr), although processing and examination for data of noninvasive techniques made overall effort similar among the 3 methods. This pilot study demonstrated that both noninvasive methods were better rapid-assessment detection techniques for flying squirrels than live traps. However, determining seasonal effects between survey techniques and further development of protocols for both noninvasive techniques is necessary prior to widespread application in the region. We used radiotelemetry to study movements, cover-type selection, and survival of fledgling Golden-winged Warblers (Vermivora chrysoptera) during the dependent postfledging period in managed forest landscapes of the western Great Lakes region. We used logistic exposure models to determine the relative importance of various habitat characteristics for explaining fledgling survival. In addition, we used compositional analysis, corrected for age-specific fledgling movement capabilities, to test for resource selection, as use versus availability, among cover types. We estimated that 48% of fledglings were depredated before independence from adult care at 25 days after fledging. Fledgling survival was lowest immediately after fledging, and 86% of predation occurred in the first 8 days following fledging. Distance from the nest to forest-shrubland edge was the strongest predictor of young fledgling survival, as survival decreased with nest distance into shrubland cover types and increased with nest distance into forest cover types. Fledglings from nests in shrubland cover types moved toward the nearest forest-shrubland edge, whereas fledglings from nests in forest cover types did not move toward edge. Fledglings selected mature forest and sapling-dominated clear-cuts over all other cover types during the early postfledging period, and fledgling survival in mature forest and sapling-dominated clearcuts was greater than in shrub-dominated clearcuts or wetland shrublands. Fledglings that were 9–25 days postfledging experienced high survival (daily survival >0.99) that was independent of any habitat variables we measured, and birds selected mature forest and shrub-dominated clear-cuts over all other cover types during that period. Five clearcuts (14% of the logged catchment area) were adjacent to fishless portions of the headwater streams, and contemporary regulations did not require riparian forest buffers in the treatment catchment. Logging did not have significant negative effects on downstream coastal cutthroat trout populations for the duration of the sample period. In response to California’s extreme natural hydroclimatic variability, complex water-management systems have been developed, even as the Delta’s natural ecosystems have been largely devastated. Climate change is projected to challenge these management and ecological systems in different ways that are characterized by different levels of uncertainty. For example, there is high certainty that climate will warm by about 2°C more (than late-20th-century averages) by mid-century and about 4°C by end of century, if greenhouse-gas emissions continue their current rates of acceleration. Future precipitation changes are much less certain, with as many climate models projecting wetter conditions as drier. However, the same projections agree that precipitation will be more intense when storms do arrive, even as more dry days will separate storms. Warmer temperatures will likely enhance evaporative demands and raise water temperatures. Consequently, climate change is projected to yield both more extreme flood risks and greater drought risks. Sea level rise (SLR) during the 20th century was about 22cm, and is projected to increase by at least 3-fold this century. SLR together with land subsidence threatens the Delta with greater vulnerabilities to inundation and salinity intrusion. Effects on the Delta ecosystem that are traceable to warming include SLR, reduced snowpack, earlier snowmelt and larger storm-driven streamflows, warmer and longer summers, warmer summer water temperatures, and water-quality changes. These changes and their uncertainties will challenge the operations of water projects and uses throughout the Delta’s watershed and delivery areas. Although the effects of climate change on Delta ecosystems may be profound, the end results are difficult to predict, except that native species will fare worse than invaders. Template‐matching event detection showed that it started on 5 July 2015 at 2:21 UTC with an M∼1.0 earthquake. The swarm exhibited unusual episodic spatial and temporal migrations and unusual diversity in the nodal planes of the focal mechanisms as compared to the simple hypocenter‐defined plane. It was also noteworthy because it consisted of >1400 events of M≥0.0, with M 2.8 being the largest event. We suggest that fluids released by metamorphic dehydration processes, migration of fluids along a detachment zone, and cascading asperity failures caused this prolific earthquake swarm, but other mechanisms (such as simple mainshock–aftershock stress triggering or a regional aseismic creep event) are less likely. Across high latitudes, thawing permafrost, alteration of hydrologic flow paths, and changes in vegetation may all affect this flux, with subsequent implications for regional and global carbon (C) budgets. Using a unique, multi-decadal dataset of continuous discharge coupled with water chemistry measurements for the Mackenzie River, we show major increases in dissolved OC (DOC) and IC (as alkalinity) fluxes since the early 1970s, for a watershed that covers 1.8 M km2 of northwestern Canada, and provides substantial inputs of freshwater and biogeochemical constituents to the Arctic Ocean. Over a 39-year period of record, DOC flux at the Mackenzie mouth increased by 39.3% (44.5 ± 22.6 Gmol), while alkalinity flux increased by 12.5% (61.5 ± 60.1 Gmol). Isotopic analyses and substantial increases in sulfate flux indicate that increases in alkalinity are driven by accelerating sulfide oxidation, a process that liberates IC from rock and soils in the absence of CO2 consumption. Seasonal and sub-catchment trends suggest that permafrost thaw plays an important role in the observed increases in DOC and alkalinity: sub-catchment increases for all constituents are confined to northern, permafrost-affected regions, while observed increases in autumn to winter are consistent with documented landscape-scale changes that have resulted from changing thaw dynamics. This increase in DOC and sulfide-derived alkalinity represents a substantial intensification of land-to-ocean C mobilization, at a level that is significant within the regional C budget. The change we observe, for example, is similar to current and projected future rates of CO2 consumption by weathering in the Mackenzie basin.
","language":"English","publisher":"IOP Science","doi":"10.1088/1748-9326/11/5/054015","usgsCitation":"Tank, S.E., Striegl, R.G., McClelland, J.W., and Kokelj, S.V., 2016, Multi-decadal increases in dissolved organic carbon and alkalinity flux from the Mackenzie drainage basin to the Arctic Ocean: Environmental Research Letters, v. 11, no. 5, p. 1-10, https://doi.org/10.1088/1748-9326/11/5/054015.","productDescription":"Article 054015; 10 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"10","ipdsId":"IP-067063","costCenters":[{"id":5044,"text":"National Research Program - Central Branch","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470414,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1088/1748-9326/11/5/054015","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":332985,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"11","issue":"5","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":2,"text":"Denver PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-05-11","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5874b0ade4b0a829a320bb65","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tank, Suzanne E.","contributorId":150795,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Tank","given":"Suzanne","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":18102,"text":"University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":658001,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Striegl, Robert G. 0000-0002-8251-4659 rstriegl@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8251-4659","contributorId":1630,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Striegl","given":"Robert","email":"rstriegl@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":5044,"text":"National Research Program - Central Branch","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":37277,"text":"WMA - Earth System Processes Division","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":36183,"text":"Hydro-Ecological Interactions Branch","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":658000,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"McClelland, James W.","contributorId":94905,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McClelland","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":658002,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Kokelj, Steven V.","contributorId":178128,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Kokelj","given":"Steven","email":"","middleInitial":"V.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":658003,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

One hypothesis for frequent roost switching is that females move to find suitable thermal conditions as ambient conditions change. Tests of this hypothesis have, however, been conducted mostly at roosts in artificial structures where microclimate is relatively stable. The goal of our study was to determine whether roost switching and roost use by northern long-eared bats, Myotis septentrionalis, that roost in trees are related to ambient conditions. We used generalized linear fixed effects models to explore the influence of roost characteristics and changes in ambient conditions on the likelihood of roost switching. We used canonical correlation analyses to examine the relationship between ambient conditions and roost characteristics. Roost switching was indeed linked to ambient conditions together with characteristics of roosts on the previous day; the best descriptors of roost switching differed between the two geographical regions we analysed. In Nova Scotia, females were less likely to switch roosts when it rained, particularly if they were in roosts below surrounding canopy whereas they were more likely to switch roosts when they were in roosts of high decay. Females roosted in shorter trees in earlier decay classes on warm days, as well as on windy and rainy days. In Kentucky, females were more likely to switch roosts at high temperatures, particularly when they were in roosts in high decay. Females roosted in shorter, decayed trees on warm days, and in less decayed trees with small diameter on windy and rainy days. Our results suggest bats switch roosts in response to changes in ambient conditions to select suitable roosting conditions, which may explain some of the proximate factors shaping fission–fusion dynamics of bats.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.anbehav.2016.09.022","usgsCitation":"Patriquin, K.J., Leonard, M.L., Broders, H.G., Ford, W.M., Britzke, E.R., and Silvis, A., 2016, Weather as a proximate explanation for fission–fusion dynamics in female northern long-eared bats: Animal Behaviour, v. 122, p. 47-57, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.anbehav.2016.09.022.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"47","endPage":"57","ipdsId":"IP-071165","costCenters":[{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":340458,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"122","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":9,"text":"Reston PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5901b1bbe4b0c2e071a99b9a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Patriquin, Krista J.","contributorId":191434,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Patriquin","given":"Krista","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":693039,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Leonard, Marty L.","contributorId":191435,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Leonard","given":"Marty","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":693040,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Broders, Hugh G.","contributorId":191436,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Broders","given":"Hugh","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":693041,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Ford, W. Unfortunately, understanding the relative contributions of multiple mortality agents to the population decline of trees is difficult, because it requires frequent measures of tree survival, growth, and recruitment, as well as the incidence of mortality agents. We present a population model of whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis), a high-elevation tree undergoing rapid decline in western North America. The loss of whitebark pine is thought to be primarily due to an invasive pathogen (white pine blister rust; Cronartium ribicola) and a native insect (mountain pine beetle; Dendroctonus ponderosae). We utilized seven plots in Crater Lake National Park (Oregon, USA) where 1220 trees were surveyed for health and the presence of blister rust and beetle activity annually from 2003–2014, except 2008. We constructed size-based projection matrices for nine years and calculated the deterministic growth rate (λ) using an average matrix and the stochastic growth rate (λs) by simulation for whitebark pine in our study population. We then assessed the roles of blister rust and beetles by calculating λ and λsusing matrices in which we removed trees with blister rust and, separately, trees with beetles. We also conducted life-table response experiments (LTRE) to determine which demographic changes contributed most to differences in λ between ambient conditions and the two other scenarios. The model suggests that whitebark pine in our plots are currently declining 1.1% per year (λ = 0.9888, λs = 0.9899). Removing blister rust from the models resulted in almost no increase in growth (λ = 0.9916, λs = 0.9930), while removing beetles resulted in a larger increase in growth (λ = 1.0028, λs = 1.0045). The LTRE demonstrated that reductions in stasis of the three largest size classes due to beetles contributed most to the smaller λ in the ambient condition. Our work demonstrates a method for assessing the relative effects of different mortality agents on declining tree populations, and it shows that the effects of insects and pathogens can be markedly different from one another. In our study, beetle activity significantly reduced tree population growth while a pathogen had minimal effect, thus management actions to stabilize our study population will likely need to include reducing beetle activity.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.foreco.2016.09.022","usgsCitation":"Jules, E., Jackson, J.I., van Mantgem, P.J., Beck, J.S., Murray, M.P., and Sahara, E.A., 2016, The relative contributions of disease and insects in the decline of a long-lived tree: a stochastic demographic model of whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis): Forest Ecology and Management, v. 381, p. 144-156, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.foreco.2016.09.022.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"144","endPage":"156","ipdsId":"IP-075247","costCenters":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470354,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.foreco.2016.09.022","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":336015,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"381","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":1,"text":"Sacramento PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58aeb13be4b01ccd54f9ee18","chorus":{"doi":"10.1016/j.foreco.2016.09.022","url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.foreco.2016.09.022","publisher":"Elsevier BV","authors":"Jules Erik S., Jackson Jenell I., van Mantgem Phillip J., Beck Jennifer S., Murray Michael P., Sahara E. However, investment in hazard protection can have the unintended consequence of encouraging development in places especially vulnerable to damage. In a comprehensive, parcel-scale analysis of all shorefront single-family homes in the state of Florida, we find that houses in nourishing zones are significantly larger and more numerous than in non-nourishing zones. The predominance of larger homes in nourishing zones suggests a positive feedback between nourishment and development that is compounding coastal risk in zones already characterized by high vulnerability.","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1002/2016EF000425","collaboration":"Eli Lazarus, Scott Armstrong, Evan Goldstein, Curtis Thorpe, Rhoda Ballenger","usgsCitation":"Armstrong, S., Lazarus, E.D., Limber, P.W., Goldstein, E.B., Thorpe, C., and Ballinger, R., 2016, Indications of a positive feedback between coastal development and beach nourishment: Earth's Future, v. 4, no. 12, p. 626-635, https://doi.org/10.1002/2016EF000425.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"626","endPage":"635","ipdsId":"IP-074268","costCenters":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":462011,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1002/2016ef000425","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":336759,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":336352,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/2016EF000425/full"}],"volume":"4","issue":"12","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":14,"text":"Menlo Park PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-12-21","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58b7eba5e4b01ccd5500baed","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Armstrong, Scott 0000-0001-9567-5964","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9567-5964","contributorId":184208,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Armstrong","given":"Scott","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":673791,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lazarus, Eli D. 0000-0003-2404-9661","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2404-9661","contributorId":184209,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Lazarus","given":"Eli","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":673792,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Limber, Patrick W. 0000-0002-8207-3750 plimber@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8207-3750","contributorId":5773,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Limber","given":"Patrick","email":"plimber@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":673790,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Goldstein, Evan B. 0000-0001-9358-1016","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9358-1016","contributorId":184210,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Goldstein","given":"Evan","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":673793,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Thorpe, Curtis","contributorId":184211,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Thorpe","given":"Curtis","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":673794,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Ballinger, Rhoda","contributorId":184212,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Ballinger","given":"Rhoda","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":673795,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}

Research by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in the late 1980s identified strata within the group to be possible petroleum source rocks, and in particular the Walcott Member of the Kwagunt Formation. Industry interest in a Chuar oil play led to several exploratory wells drilled in the 1990s in southern Utah and northern Arizona to test the overlying Cambrian Tapeats Sandstone reservoir, and confirm the existence of the Chuar in subcrop. USGS geochemical analyses of Tapeats oil shows in two wells have been tentatively correlated to Chuar bitumen extracts. Distribution of the Chuar in the subsurface is poorly constrained with only five well penetrations, but recently published gravity/aeromagnetic interpretations provide further insight into the Chuar subcrop distribution. The Chuar petroleum system was reexamined as part of the USGS Paradox Basin resource assessment in 2011. A map was constructed to delineate the Chuar petroleum system that encompasses the projected Chuar source rock distribution and all oil shows in the Tapeats Sandstone, assuming that the Chuar is the most likely source for such oil shows. Two hypothetical plays were recognized but not assessed: (1) a conventional play with a Chuar source and Tapeats reservoir, and (2) an unconventional play with a Chuar source and reservoir. The conventional play has been discouraging because most surface structures have been tested by drilling with minimal petroleum shows, and there is some evidence that petroleum may have been flushed by CO2 from Tertiary volcanism. The unconventional play is untested and remains promising even though the subcrop distribution of source facies within the Chuar Group is largely unknown.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Hydrocarbon source rocks in unconventional plays, Rocky Mountain Region","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":15,"text":"Monograph"},"language":"English","publisher":"Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists","usgsCitation":"Lillis, P.G., 2016, The Chuar Petroleum System, Arizona and Utah, chap. of Hydrocarbon source rocks in unconventional plays, Rocky Mountain Region, p. 79-136.","productDescription":"58 p.","startPage":"79","endPage":"136","ipdsId":"IP-067009","costCenters":[{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":333120,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":333119,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.rmag.org/publications"}],"publishingServiceCenter":{"id":2,"text":"Denver PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5878a48de4b04df303d95814","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lillis, Paul G. 0000-0002-7508-1699 plillis@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7508-1699","contributorId":1817,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lillis","given":"Paul","email":"plillis@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":656022,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Moving relatively immobile young to improve access to important resources, limit detection of concentrated scent by predators, and decrease infestations by ectoparasites can be advantageous. Moving young, however, can also expose them to increased mortality risks (e.g., accidents, getting lost, predation). For group-living animals that live in variable environments and care for young over extended time periods, the influence of biotic factors (e.g., group size, predation risk) and abiotic factors (e.g., temperature and precipitation) on the decision to move young is unknown. We used data from 25 satellite-collared wolves ( Canis lupus ) in Idaho, Montana, and Yellowstone National Park to evaluate how these factors could influence the decision to move pups during the pup-rearing season. We hypothesized that litter size, the number of adults in a group, and perceived predation risk would positively affect the number of times gray wolves moved pups. We further hypothesized that wolves would move their pups more often when it was hot and dry to ensure sufficient access to water. Contrary to our hypothesis, monthly temperature above the 30-year average was negatively related to the number of times wolves moved their pups. Monthly precipitation above the 30-year average, however, was positively related to the amount of time wolves spent at pup-rearing sites after leaving the natal den. We found little relationship between risk of predation (by grizzly bears, humans, or conspecifics) or group and litter sizes and number of times wolves moved their pups. Our findings suggest that abiotic factors most strongly influence the decision of wolves to move pups, although responses to unpredictable biotic events (e.g., a predator encountering pups) cannot be ruled out.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Society of Mammalogists","doi":"10.1093/jmammal/gyw114","usgsCitation":"Ausband, D., Mitchell, M.S., Bassing, S.B., Nordhagen, M., Smith, D., and Stahler, D.R., 2016, Dog days of summer: Influences on decision of wolves to move pups: Journal of Mammalogy, v. 97, no. 5, p. 1282-1287, https://doi.org/10.1093/jmammal/gyw114.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"1282","endPage":"1287","ipdsId":"IP-076548","costCenters":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470363,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1093/jmammal/gyw114","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":337431,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"97","issue":"5","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":12,"text":"Tacoma PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-07-12","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58c7af9de4b0849ce9795e80","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ausband, David E.","contributorId":51441,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ausband","given":"David E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":683907,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mitchell, Michael S. 0000-0002-0773-6905 mmitchel@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0773-6905","contributorId":3716,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mitchell","given":"Michael","email":"mmitchel@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":683854,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Bassing, Sarah B.","contributorId":81006,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bassing","given":"Sarah","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":683908,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Nordhagen, Matthew","contributorId":189127,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Nordhagen","given":"Matthew","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":683909,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Smith, Douglas W.","contributorId":179181,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Smith","given":"Douglas W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":683910,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Stahler, Daniel R.","contributorId":179180,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Stahler","given":"Daniel","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":683911,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}

The focus of the study was to investigate the applicability of using GPR data to image washover deposits in the stratigraphic record. High amplitude reflections observed in two shore-perpendicular GPR profiles were correlated to shallow (<1 m) lithologic contacts observed in sediment cores. At these contacts, deposits consisting primarily of quartz sand overlie sediments with organic matter that include degraded plant root or stem material. The underlying organic matter likely represents the vegetated portion of the barrier island that was buried by washover fans deposited during hurricanes Irene (2011) and Sandy (2012), as indicated in high-resolution aerial photographs. The GPR data were able to delineate the washover deposits from the underlying stratigraphic unit; however, the radar data did not resolve finer structures necessary to definitively differentiate washover facies from other sand-rich deposits (e.g., flood-tide deltas and dunes). Other GPR profiles contain reflections that likely correlate to geomorphic features like tidal channels and vegetated zones observed in historical aerial imagery. Burial of these features by overwash fluxes were observed in the aerial imagery and thus the resulting radar sequence is largely interpreted as washover deposits. Deeper, channel-like features that have been infilled were also observed in shore-parallel profiles and these features coincide with scour channels observed in the 1966 aerial photography. Additional sedimentological data are required to determine what role overwash played in the in-filling of these features.
","language":"English","publisher":"Environmental & Engineering Geophysical Society","doi":"10.2113/JEEG21.4.173","usgsCitation":"Zaremba, N., Smith, C.G., Bernier, J., and Forde, A.S., 2016, Application of ground penetrating radar for identification of washover deposits and other stratigraphic features: Assateague Island, MD: Journal of Environmental & Engineering Geophysics, v. 21, no. 4, p. 173-186, https://doi.org/10.2113/JEEG21.4.173.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"173","endPage":"186","ipdsId":"IP-074256","costCenters":[{"id":574,"text":"St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":337659,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"21","issue":"4","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":9,"text":"Reston PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58ca52cde4b0849ce97c86a0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Zaremba, Nicholas 0000-0002-2361-2881 nzaremba@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2361-2881","contributorId":181756,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Zaremba","given":"Nicholas","email":"nzaremba@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":574,"text":"St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":669428,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Smith, Christopher G. 0000-0002-8075-4763 cgsmith@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8075-4763","contributorId":3410,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"Christopher","email":"cgsmith@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":574,"text":"St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":24708,"text":"Lower Mississippi-Gulf Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":669429,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Bernier, Julie 0000-0002-9918-5353 jbernier@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9918-5353","contributorId":3549,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bernier","given":"Julie","email":"jbernier@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":574,"text":"St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":669430,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Forde, Arnell S. 0000-0002-5581-2255 aforde@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5581-2255","contributorId":376,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Forde","given":"Arnell","email":"aforde@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[{"id":574,"text":"St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":669431,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

It is important that the source of data is commensurate with the spatial and temporal scale of the question addressed, but fire history databases are derived from different sources with different restrictions. In California, a frequently used fire history dataset is the State of California Fire and Resource Assessment Program (FRAP) fire history database, which circumscribes fire perimeters at a relatively fine scale. It includes large fires on both state and federal lands but only covers fires that were mapped or had other spatially explicit data. A different database is the state and federal governments’ annual reports of all fires. They are more complete than the FRAP database but are only spatially explicit to the level of county (California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection – Cal Fire) or forest (United States Forest Service – USFS). We found substantial differences between the FRAP database and the annual summaries, with the largest and most consistent discrepancy being in fire frequency. The FRAP database missed the majority of fires and is thus a poor indicator of fire frequency or indicators of ignition sources. The FRAP database is also deficient in area burned, especially before 1950. Even in contemporary records, the huge number of smaller fires not included in the FRAP database account for substantial cumulative differences in area burned. Wildfires in California account for nearly half of the western United States fire suppression budget. Therefore, the conclusions about data discrepancies and the implications for fire research are of broad importance.
","language":"English","publisher":"CSIRO The goal of this investigation was to establish a baseline understanding of the susceptibility of ocean- and stream-type Chinook salmon to infection and mortality caused by exposure to commonly detected strains of L, U, and M IHNV. The L IHNV strain tested here was highly infectious and virulent in both Chinook salmon populations, following patterns previously reported for Chinook salmon. Furthermore, ocean- and stream-type Chinook salmon fry at 1 g can also become subclinically infected with U and M strains of IHNV without experiencing significant mortality. The stream-type life history phenotype was generally more susceptible to infection and suffered greater mortality than the ocean-type phenotype. Between the U and M genogroup strains tested, the U group strains were generally more infectious than the M group strains in both Chinook salmon types. Substantial viral clearance occurred by 30 d post exposure, but persistent viral infection was observed with L, U, and M strains in both host populations. While mortality decreased with increased host size in stream-type Chinook salmon, infection prevalence was not lower for all strains at a greater size. These results suggest that Chinook salmon may serve as reservoirs and/or vectors of U and M genogroup IHNV.
","language":"English","publisher":"Inter-Research","doi":"10.3354/dao03030","usgsCitation":"Hernandez, D., Purcell, M., Friedman, C., and Kurath, G., 2016, Susceptibility of ocean- and stream-type Chinook salmon to isolates of the L, U, and M genogroups of infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV): Diseases of Aquatic Organisms, v. 121, no. 1, p. 15-28, https://doi.org/10.3354/dao03030.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"15","endPage":"28","ipdsId":"IP-072866","costCenters":[{"id":654,"text":"Western Fisheries Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":331459,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"121","issue":"1","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":12,"text":"Tacoma PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58468aeae4b04fc80e5236c7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hernandez, Daniel dghernandez@usgs.gov","contributorId":177139,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hernandez","given":"Daniel","email":"dghernandez@usgs.gov","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":654859,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Purcell, Maureen K. mpurcell@usgs.gov","contributorId":3061,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Purcell","given":"Maureen K.","email":"mpurcell@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":654,"text":"Western Fisheries Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":654860,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Friedman, Carolyn S.","contributorId":13890,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Friedman","given":"Carolyn S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":654861,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Kurath, Gael 0000-0003-3294-560X gkurath@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3294-560X","contributorId":2629,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kurath","given":"Gael","email":"gkurath@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":654,"text":"Western Fisheries Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":654862,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

We demonstrate this approach using a data set of migrating semipalmated sandpipers (Calidris pussila) for which we extend existing stopover models to allow for individuals to have different behaviour in terms of their stopover duration at the site. We demonstrate the use of reversible jump MCMC methods to derive posterior distributions for the model parameters and the models, simultaneously. The algorithm moves between models with different numbers of arrival groups as well as between models with different numbers of behavioural groups. The approach is shown to provide new ecological insights about the stopover behaviour of semipalmated sandpipers but is generally applicable to any population in which animals arrive in groups and potentially exhibit heterogeneity in terms of one or more other processes.
","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/s10651-016-0352-0","usgsCitation":"Matechou, E., Nicholls, G.K., Morgan, B.J., Collazo, J., and Lyons, J.E., 2016, Bayesian analysis of Jolly-Seber type models: Environmental and Ecological Statistics, v. 23, no. 4, p. 531-547, https://doi.org/10.1007/s10651-016-0352-0.","productDescription":"17 p.","startPage":"531","endPage":"547","ipdsId":"IP-057563","costCenters":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470376,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s10651-016-0352-0","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":349161,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"23","issue":"4","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":8,"text":"Raleigh PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-08-04","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5a60fc7de4b06e28e9c23f0f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Matechou, Eleni","contributorId":200631,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Matechou","given":"Eleni","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":722930,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Nicholls, Geoff K.","contributorId":200632,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Nicholls","given":"Geoff","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":722931,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Morgan, Byron J.
