Analysis of samples collected at four sites showed that during periods of warm weather several of the parameters sampled produced unusually high or low values that indicated possible water-quality problems. Low dissolved-oxygen concentration, high nitrogen and organic carbon concentrations, and high coliform bacteria counts were at sampling sites upstream from the Greenwood water-supply lake. Sampling in and downstream from the lake indicated that the quality of the water passing through the lake was improved significantly. However, sampling in the lake indicated that there is a large layer of water with low oxygen concentration and a buildup of phosphorus, iron, manganese, and some other metals in the bottom ooze. Additional Landsat satellites are planned for launch in 1978 and 1981. The satellites orbit the Earth at an altitude of approximately 900 km and each can obtain repetitive coverage of cloud-free areas every 18 days. A sun-synchronous orbit is used to insure repeatable illumination conditions. Repetitive satellite coverage allows optimal cover conditions for geologic applications to be identified. Seasonal variations in solar illumination must be analyzed to select the best Landsat data for geologic applications. Landsat data may be viewed in stereo where there is sufficient sidelap and sufficient topographic relief. Landsat-1 ceased operation on January 10, 1978. Landsat-2 detects, only solar radiation that is reflected from the Earth's surface in visible and near-visible wavelengths. The third Landsat will also detect emitted thermal radiation. The multispectral scanner (MSS) was the only sensing instrument used on the first two satellites. The MSS on Landsats-1 and -2 detect radiation which is reflected from a 79 m by 79 m area, and the data are formatted as if the measurement was made from a 56 m by 79 m area.\r\n\r\nThe MSS integrates spectral response from all cover types within the 79 m by 79 m area. The integrated spectral signature often does not resemble the spectral signature from individual cover types, and the integrated signature is also modified by the atmosphere. Landsat-1 and -2 data are converted to 70 mm film and computer compatible tapes (CCT's) at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC); these are shipped to the EROS Data Center (EDC) for duplication and distribution to users. Landsat-C data will be converted to 241 mm-wide film and CCT's at EDC. The area consists of approximately 22 km<sup>2</sup> in the Hiawatha National Forest.</p><p>Rocks exposed in the area include sandstone, shaly sandstone, dolomitic sandstone, sandy dolomite, and a minor amount of conglomerate; these rocks range in age from possibly Precambrian to early Middle Ordovician. A minor amount of unconsolidated glacier-transported debris was deposited during Pleistocene time.</p><p>No deposits of either metallic or nonmetallic minerals were found. The primary objectives of the network are to (1) determine the present quality of the State's ground water, (2) provide continual monitoring of groundwater quality for water-management purposes, and (3) serve as a warning system of undesirable changes in ground-water quality.</p>\n<p>Data are compiled for geohydrologic conditions, groundwater quality, cultural elements, and pollution sources. &nbsp;A \"Hydrologic Unit Priority Index\" is calculated from these data to select priority areas for monitoring purposes.</p>\n<p>New ground-water-quality data were collected where existing data were lacking and at some sites that were previously sampled. Old and new data at common sites correlated well, indicating that the water quality has not changed significantly. Most ground water in Idaho is of good quality for common uses; however, water quality may pose problems in local areas. The problems result from both natural and human causes.</p>\n<p>The potential for pollution of the aquifers is expected to be greatest in areas of greatest development. In Idaho, population centers and industries tend to be in areas of privately owned irrigated and arable &middot; land. Therefore, these areas are of primary concern for monitoring ground-water quality. Other areas requiring monitoring include those with second-home development, mining and its related processes, and radioactive-waste disposal.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
