The study analyzed the probability of spill occurrence, likely paths of the spills, and locations in space and time of such objects as recreational and biological resources likely to be vulnerable. These results combined to yield estimates of the overall oilspill risk associated with development of the proposed lease area. This risk is compared to the existing oilspill risk from existing leases in the area. The analysis implicityly includes estimates of weathering rates and slick dispersion and an indication of the possible mitigating effects of cleanups. A hydrologic reconnaissance of a 74-kilometer reach of the Yampa River in Dinosaur National Monument was made during low flow in mid-August 1976. Stream discharge, which was measured along this reach every 16 to 24 kilometers, ranged from 9.4 to 10.6 cubic meters per second. Variations in streamflow were explained, in part, by underflow, loss to ground water, and evaporation. Specific conductance was measured about every 2 kilometers and indicated a downstream increase on the order of 11 to 12 percent for the reach. Except for mercury, bottom-sediment trace-element concentrations in the study reach were less than maximum concentrations determined during August-September 1976 for bottom sediments at unperturbed sites upstream in the Yampa River basin. At one of five sampling sites, the mercury concentration in bottom sediments exceeded the maximum measured upstream level.

The numerous collections amassed by the U.S. Geological Survey's study of the Western Phosphate Field have been examined. Many collections already have been discarded; and only those still housed at the Smithsonian are dealt with in this paper. Future studies of the biostratigraphy and paleogeography of the Phosphoria Formation and related rocks will be based on this data. Sections and samples are those presented by Yochelson (1968). In this paper, the brachiopods of each sample are listed. New and undescribed forms (in quotations) are presented as the closest allied and described taxon. Lingula and Orbiculoidea are not listed.

For streams where only periodic measurements are made during the year, and that are not appreciably affected by regulation or by thermal loading , a simple harmonic function may adequately depict the annual seasonal cycle of stream temperature at any given site. Resultant harmonic coefficients obtained from available stream-temperature records may be used in the following ways: (1) To interpolate between discrete measurements by solving the harmonic function at specified times, thereby filling in estimates of stream-temperature values; (2) to characterize areal or regional patterns of natural stream-temperature values; (2) to characterize areal or regional patterns of natural stream-temperature conditions; and (3) to detect and to assess any significant at a site brought about by streamflow regulation or basin development. Moreover, less-than-daily or sampling frequencies at a given site may give estimates of annual variation of stream temperatures that are statistically comparable to estimates obtained from a daily or continuous sampling scheme. The latter procedure may result in potential savings of resources in network operations, with negligible loss in information on annual stream-temperature variations. This report describes nuclear power reactor sites in the southeastern United States. The map indicates the location of all sites as of July 1976 in the conterminous United States, and a later published report will include all sites. The project is one of several in the National Environmental Overview Program of the U.S. Geological Survey which will identify and summarize geologic, hydrologic, and topographic topics associated with future energy, mineral resource, and land use development in the United States.

The increasing use of atomic energy creates a need for the dissemination of information about nuclear reactors. Because power plant safety is related, in part, to the geology and seismology of the plant area and surroundings, this study is focused primarily on that relationship.

Information about the geology and seismology is summarized from reports prepared by consultants to utility companies and submitted by the companies to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (formerly the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission) in support of the application for a construction permit.

Coordinates for site locations were established by the author from descriptive information in the reports. The U.S. Geological Survey 7-1/2 minute topographic maps were used in confirming the geographic location of the sites. The coordinates may in some cases represent the planned location rather than the exact actual location.

This FORTRAN computer program is a time-sharing version of the classic program of Appleman and Evans (1973) and Evans, Appleman, and Handwerker (1963), which indexes powder patterns and refines unit-cell dimensions. The program, originally written to be processed in batch mode for an IBM computer, was modified to run in time-sharing mode on the DEC 10 computer.

This version does not depart philosophically from the original program; however, the input and output formats have been adapted to the time-sharing terminal. These modifications and the actual running of the program are not discussed in detail here, as this report is intended only to make the program itself available. Examples of the input and output formats are shown on pages 3-8.

Input can be entered through the terminal by two methods. An input file may either be independently created and then entered into the program later, or created directly through the interactive mode of the program. With the latter method a file of the input information may also be saved for later use. Both methods allow for the data to be edited after each refinement run.

The output format has been changed to an 80-column width, common to many terminals. Only the last refinement cycle is printed and some of the statistical computations have been surpressed.

Using the \"Unit Cell\" program from the terminal in a \"real time\" situation emphasizes the versatility of the program. This ability to interact directly with the computer gives the user a better appreciation of the program, its options, the data, and the problem being solved.

The U.S. Geological Survey began a study to determine sediment yields for selected streams in Texas during the 1966 water year to provide information for areas in which sediment-yield data were meager or lacking. These data will aid in delineating problem areas and planning for water-resources development in the State. This report presents estimates of suspended-sediment loads and yields from 20 drainage basins ranging in area from 26 to 1,410 square miles. These estimates are based on samples collected periodically during water years 1966-74.

Sediment loads ranged from 1,500 tons per year at the station North Fork Hubbard Creek near Albany to 278,000 tons per year at the station Wichita River at Wichita Falls. Sediment yields ranged from 15 tons per square mile per year in the drainage area of East Yegua Creek near Dime Box to 500 tons per square mile per year in the drainage area of Denton Creek near Justin. Sediment yields from drainage areas generally decrease from northwest to southeast across the State.

The aggregate thickness of evaporites (salt, gypsum, and anhydrite) in the Silurian Salina sequence in Michigan exceeds 1200 feet in areas near the periphery of the Michigan basin, where the salt beds are less than 3000 feet below land surface. In northeast Ohio the aggregate thickness of salt beds is as much as 200 feet in places, and in western New York it is more than 500 feet, where th beds are less than 3000 feet deep.

The salt-bearing rocks dip regionally on the order of 50 feet per mile; those in Michigan dip toward the center of the Michigan basin, and those in Ohio and New York, in the Appalachian basin, dip generally southward. The rocks in both basins thicken downdip. Minor folds and faults occur in the salt-bearing rocks in all three states. Some of this defrmation has been attenuated or absorbed bo the salt beds.

Occuring near the middle of thick sedimentary sequences, the salt beds are bounded aboe and below by beds containing water having dissolved-solids concentrations several times that seawter. The brines occur commonly in discrete zones of high permeability at specific places in the stratigraphic sequence.

In northeast Ohio two prominent brine zones are recognized by the driller, the Devonian Oriskany Sandstone, or 'first water' zone, above the Salina Formation, and the Newburg or 'second water' zone below the Salina. In each aquifer there is a vertical component of hydraulic head, but little brine probably moves through the salt beds because their permeability is extremely low. Also, ther is little evidence of dissolution of the salt in areas distant from the outcrop, suggesting that if brine does move through the salt, movement is at a slow enough rate so that, in combination with the saturated or near-saturated condition of the water, it precludes significant dissolution. Principal brine movement is probably in the permeable zones in the direction of the hydraulic gradient.

Two areas in Michigan and one area each in Ohio and New York appear suitable for additional investigation of salt beds for purposes radioactive waste disposal. One of the Michigan areas is in the northern part of the southern peninsula, in Presque Isle and Alpena Counties; the other is in the southern part of the southern peninsula, in Oakland, Macomb, and St. Clair Counties (fig. 3). In northeast Ohio the area that appears to be suitable for investigation includes most of the eastern half of Lake County and extends eastward into Ashtabula County and southward into Geauga County. In western New York conditions may warrant additional investigation in Schuyler, Tompkins, and western Cortland Counties.

Free gold and silver, tellurides, pyrite, galena, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite are in and associated with quartz veins and quartz veinlet stockworks. Country rocks consist of a sequence of pyroclastic and transported pyroclastic rocks of the Halaban Group that are locally highly silicified and potassium-feldspathized. \r\n\r\nTwo known ore zones occur in a north-trending zone of quartz veins and breccias, faults, alteration, and metallization approximately 400 m wide and 1,000 m long. The ancient and recent workings are located in the northern part of this zone, and a significant new discovery, the southern mineralized zone, is in the southern part. A potential resource of 1.1 million tons of 27 g/t Au and 73 g/t Ag ore is contained in the southern mineralized zone. \r\n\r\nGeologic setting of ore bodies is similar in both zones. Significant mineralization occurs only within altered and fractured agglomerate directly beneath a cap of fine-grained tuff and sedimentary rock where the layered rocks are cut by metalliferous quartz veins.
