This system is the source of water for Ishpeming and several small communities in the central part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. During years of average precipitation, more water is used from the system than is supplied to it, and the quantity of water in lake storage is depleted. Below-normal precipitation in 1976 and early 1977 accelerated depletion and produced significantly lower lake levels, casting doubt on the system's ability to meet water demands. Because precipitation and overland runoff account for 93 percent of the water supplied to the Lake Sally system, the lake levels fluctuate according to precipitation patterns and are particularly sensitive to drought. </p><p>Water supplied to the Lake Sally system when precipitation is average is estimated to be 2.57 ft<sup>3</sup>/s or 13.4 in/yr. Use of water by Ishpeming is about 3.5 ft<sup>3</sup>/s or 18.27 in/yr. When the Lake Sally system supply is insufficient, the city also obtains some water from Cedar Lake and Lake Angeline outside the Lake Sally system. </p><p>Results of a base-flow investigation in 1977 on Ely Creek, the outlet of the Lake Sally system, indicate that ground-water flow to the lake system is between 0.08 and 0.17 ft<sup>3</sup>/s.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Locations for all samples are given in Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates. Brief descriptions of rock samples are also included. Rocks analyzed include mica-garnet-kyanite schist, mica-quartz gneiss, vein quartz, pegmatite, trondhjemite and amphibolite. The samples were analyzed for bulk chemistry and mineralogy. A large zone of active fissures is located near Picacho, Arizona on the eastern rim of a large subsidence bowl. The main fissure has been named the Picacho fault. During February and March 1977, approximately 6.5 km of seismic-refraction lines were run across the Picacho fault to investigate subsurface conditions down to the crystalline basement. In addition, two lines of close-spaced gravity stations were made across the fault. The gross geologic features inferred from the gravity data agree with the seismic interpretations.\r\n\r\nSix layers were interpreted from the seismic refraction data: three layers of unconsolidated alluvium, two of denser rock of varying porosity, and the basement rock. Three significant basement faults were identified. These faults appear to lie almost directly beneath the surface fissures. Abrupt slope changes in the alluvial layers and an abrupt velocity change in the denser compacted sediments seem to be related spatially to the surface fissures. In addition there are lateral velocity differences within the basement fault blocks.\r\n\r\nIn the overlying sediments a facies change in a 3.0 km/sec layer is suggested by the abrupt lateral velocity increase from 3.0 km/sec to 3.7 km/sec. This apparent facies change may in fact represent a fault plane extending upwards from the westernmost basement fault. Depths of test holes ranged from 640 to 2,800 feet. The maximum quantity of water discharged during the air drilling of individual test holes ranged from 14 to 880 gallons per minute. The specific conductance of water discharged during drilling ranged from 100 to 50,000 micromhos per centimeter at 25 degrees Celsius. Aquifer tests made during drilling indicate transmissivity at four sites ranged from 100 to 1,600 feet squared per day and the storage coefficient at two sites ranged from 0.0004 to 0.00016. Depths to the static water level ranged from 30 to 695 feet. Water levels were measured in each test well, and potentiometric maps constructed from these measurements are comparable in configuration and altitude to those previously drawn from composite-head data. Water samples taken during drilling indicate that, except for water from the Uinta Formation, the water in Piceance basin is generally not suited for domestic water supply due to the presence of excessive amounts of certain trace constituents, notably fluoride. The average concentration of dissolved solids, based on data from the test holes, was 909 milligrams per liter (mg/L) for the Uinta Formation, 828 mg/L for the upper part of the Parachute Creek Member of the Green River Formation, and 3,460 mg/L for the lower part of the Parachute Creek Member. The coring took place in September, 1977 aboard the R/V ANNANDALE. During the cruise (AN-01-77), 20 vibracores were taken at 17 stations across the Continental Shelf off the coast of New Jersey (Figure 1). Table 1 shows the station locations, the water depths at each station, and the core lengths.&nbsp;</p><p>The objective of the study was to obtain a set of representative index properties as well as strength and compressibility data on sediments from across the shelf in the Baltimore Canyon Trough area. It was anticipated that these data, although of a reconnaissance rather than a site-specific nature, would provide a useful indication of the engineering properties of these sediments. Ultimately, these data may be used for preliminary design applications and the assessment of potential hazards. In this report, the results are presented without any interpretation. An overall evaluation of all data collected during the study, including those contained in this report, presently is underway.&nbsp;</p><p>Users of this report should be cautioned not to take these test results out of context. Two factors must be borne in mind. The first is that these tests were done on somewhat disturbed samples compared with those obtained through high-quality sampling programs onshore. Much disturbance is inevitable offshore but the significance of the disturbance on these test results has not yet been evaluated. The second factor is that these data are only part of the total set available from this project. A complete analysis of all data may lead to conclusions that are different from those based on this set of data only.</p><p>The tests reported herein were performed by Geotechnical Engineers Inc., 1017 Main Street, Winchester, Massachusetts 01890, under Contract 14-08-0001-16232 of the U.S. Geological Survey. Richard Brown and Charles Osgood performed the engineering properties tests. Sally A. The area is 21 km northeast of Asheville, Buncombe County, N.C., and 11 km southwest of Mount Mitchell, the highest point in eastern North America. The study area is bounded on the southeast by the Blue Ridge Parkway, on the northeast by Bullhead Ridge, and on the southwest and west by Big Fork Ridge (Plate 1b). Preliminary studies by the U.S. Geological Survey and State agencies in Wyoming, Montana, and South Dakota have indicated that these aquifers might provide a significant percentage of the water requirements for coal development. Geologic and water-temperature data for the Minnelusa Formation of Permian and Pennsylvanian age and for the Madison Limestone (Group where it is subdivided) of Mississippian and locally late Devonian age , and their equivalents, were compiled and interpreted. Maps were produced showing the altitude and ground-water temperatures of the top of these formations. The altitude (configuration) maps show the depth and position of the formations throughout the area. Temperature maps can be used to calculate changes in the viscosity of water caused by large temperature differences. The viscosity differences will be useful in adjusting calculated transmissivity aquifer values (the rate at which water can be transmitted through an aquifer). Analysis has been made of 204 continuous record stations, both regulated and unregulated and 651 partial-record stations operated either by the U.S. Geological Survey or Tennessee Valley Authority through the 1975 water year. Flow duration and frequency data have been tabulated for the continuous record sites using the digital computer and graphical methods. Frequency data only is presented for partial-record sites computed in most cases by comparing several discharge measurements at the site with concurrent daily mean flow for an appropriate gaging station. Flow duration data can be used to define a flow duration curve, with the slope at points on that curve used to establish the dependability of the stream to sustain a particular flow. Low-flow frequency data are presented to predict the probability that a specified flow or lesser flow will recur through time.
