The stream-gaging stations on Mountain Creek near Cedar Hill and Walnut Creek near Mansfield provide hydrologic data to define runoff characteristics from small drainage basins. They also serve as index stations for inflow into the reservoir and provide operational data for the reservoir. In addition, the station Walnut Creek near Mansfield is equipped with a recording rain gage. The stage station near Duncanville provides data pertinent to operation of the gates in the Mountain Creek Lake Dam. The reservoir-content station at the dam provides records of reservoir state and contents. The stream-gaging station Mountain Creek at Grand Prairie provides records of outflow from Mountain Creek Lake and the basin. Basin outflow for the 1976 water year was 78,660 acre-feet which is only 1,140 acre-feet above the 16-year (1960-76) average of 77,520 acre-feet. Storage in Mountain Creek Lake showed a net gain of 760 acre-feet during the water year. Rainfall over the study area for the 1976 water year was about 32 inches, which is about 2 inches below the long-term mean rainfall (1960-75) for the area. Stream depletions due to ground-water withdrawals upstream from Enders Reservoir (northwest of the study area) have resulted in a shortage of about 8,700 acre-feet per year. The availability of ground water to supply part of this deficit was examined. Two surficial aquifers that are currently economical to develop were investigated.</p><p>The Ogallala aquifer of late Tertiary age which underlies all the area except the major stream valleys has a hydraulic conductivity averaging less than 200 gallons per day per square foot. Hydraulic conductivities and saturated thicknesses are greater north of and parallel to the Republican River from McCook to Culbertson. The most productive aquifer comprises alluvial deposits of Pleistocene and Holocene age which occupy the valleys of the Republican River and Frenchman Creek. Saturated thickness of this aquifer averages 5O feet, and hydraulic conductivity averages 1,000 gallons per day per square foot. The two aquifers are hydraulically connected except where the bedrock surface on both sides of the Republican River valley is higher than the water levels in the aquifers.</p><p>Canal seepage and deep percolation have caused water levels to rise as much as 20 feet in the Hitchcock-Red Willow and Frenchman Valley Irrigation Districts north of the Republican River and as much as 40 feet in the Meeker-Driftwood Irrigation District south of the River. Streamflow accretions from ground water have not increased significantly on Frenchman, Blackwood, or Driftwood Creeks. Ground-water inflow to the Republican River has increased about 6 cubic feet per second between Trenton and McCook.</p><p>A digital model of the stream aquifer system was used to simulate the pre-1976 hydrology and assess future conditions for two supply-well configurations as well as for existing private irrigation wells. The first supply-well configuration could sustain less than 37 percent of the well-field capacity of 5,970 acre-feet per year. Projected maximum stream depletions were 12 cubic feet per second on Frenchman Creek and 4 cubic feet per second on Blackwood Creek. The second supply-well configuration could sustain 79 percent of the well-field capacity of 2,780 acre-feet per year. Simulated stream depletions were less than 5 percent of mean annual flow at the end of 19 years. These included overflights in June 1975, June 1976, July 1976, January 1977, May 1977, and July 1977 when photographic observations were made from small fixed-wing aircraft and field observations in June 1975, July 1976, January 1977, and July 1977. Field observations consisted of measuring beach morphology, sediment distribution, and vegetation type, and characterization of beach dynamics between Fairweather Glacier and La Perouse Glacier.</p><p>Ninety sediment samples were collected and analyzed for grain size in the Menlo Park USGS sediment laboratory. Beach morphology at selected sites was determined by profiling from the limit of storm deposited debris (mostly wood) to the surf zone. In 1976, 30 profiles were made, ten of which were revisited in 1977. Survey open-file report), in which the hydraulic effects of two alternative highway plans during a large-magnitude flood were evaluated, a hydraulic analysis was made for a third highway plan. The two plans evaluated in the original report had been found by the State Department of Transportation to be infeasible. A design-flood discharge of 18,200 cubic feet per second was used in the new evaluation, as in the original report. The recurrence interval of that flood is approximately 100 years. The corresponding peak flood stage at the proposed bridge site was determined by the New York State Department of Transportation to be 411.8 feet.</p><p>During the design flood, the new proposed alternative would cause a 0.1-foot increase in water-surface elevation from the bridge to the approach section; 1,300 cubic feet per second would overflow the road north of the bridge and 6,800 cubic feet per second south of it. Because of this dynamic nature, special consideration must be made in planning for development, and. caution must be exercised in site selection for facilities to be emplaced in the coastal zone. All types of coastal processes from continuously active normal processes to the low frequency-high intensity rare event must be considered. Site-specific evaluation-s considering the broad range of possible processes must precede initiation of development. \r\n\r\nAn example of the relation between coastal processes and a proposed resource treatment facility is presented for Icy Bay, Alaska. Icy Bay is the only sheltered bay near many of the offshore tracts leased for petroleum exploration in the 1976 northern Gulf of Alaska OCS (Outer Continental Shelf) lease sale. Consequently, it has been selected as a primary onshore staging site for the support of offshore exploration and development. The environment of Icy Bay has many potentially hazardous features, including a submarine moraine at the bay mouth and actively calving glaciers at the bay's head which produce many icebergs. But most significant from the point of view of locating onshore facilities and pipeline corridors are the high rates of shoreline erosion and sediment deposition. The length of rupture of the fault as a function of earthquake magnitude is accounted for, and ground motion estimates at the site are made using the magnitude of the earthquake and the closest distance from the site to the rupture zone. Uncertainty in the earthquake magnitude, in the rupture given magnitude, in the location of the rupture zone on the fault, in the maximum possible magnitude of earthquakes, and in the ground motion at the site given the earthquake, its size, rupture length, and location, are accounted for explicitly. FRISK (Fault RISK) was written to take advantage of repeated calculations, so that seismic hazard analyses for several ground motion parameters (for instance, peak ground acceleration, velocity, and displacement), and for several sites, are most efficiently made with one execution of the program rather than with repeated executions.\r\n\r\nThe program uses a step-truncated exponential distribution for earthquake magnitude, a lognormal distribution for rupture length given magnitude, a uniform distribution for rupture location on faults, and a lognormal distribution of site amplitude given magnitude of the earthquake and distance from the rupture zone to the site. Many of these data were collected as part of a cooperative program with the city of Cordova. The purpose of this report is to present the data in a concise format for interested parties.</p><p>Cordova is on the southeast shore of Orca Inlet in Prince William Sound (lat 60°33' N.; long 145°45' W.) at an altitude of approximately 90 feet (fig. 7). The limited development has occurred along the north shore of the west arm of Eyak Lake. The current population of Cordova is about 1,800. The system measures bottom current speed and direction, pressure, temperature, and light transmission, and photographs the bottom. The instrument operates in a burst sample mode. The system can be deployed for periods of 2-6 months to monitor intermittent processes of sediment movement such as storms, and to assess seasonal variability. Red mudstone and limestone characterize the strata in the lower sequence, and sandstone and dolomite characterize the strata in the upper sequence. Initial deposits of the lower sequence are-red mudstone probably of no older age than about middle Morrowan, except in the subsurface of southwestern Wyoming where early Morrowan strata may be present. The basal red mudstone lies unconformably upon Mississippian strata except in the vicinity of the ancestral Rocky Mountain Front Range where they lie upon Precambrian rocks. The red beds grade upward to interbedded limestone and mudstone of late Morrowan and early Atokan age; but the limestone strata are absent at many places because of beveling on a Middle Pennsylvanian erosional surface.</p><p>Initial deposits of the upper sequence are heterogeneous and locally may be thinly bedded red, green, or varicolored mudstone, sandstone, or dolomite of late Atokan to early Des Moinesian age. Basal strata of the upper sequence lie unconformably upon lower Pennsylvanian strata at most places in Wyoming; but locally, where the lower Pennsylvanian strata are absent by erosion or possibly by nondeposition, the upper sequence lies upon Mississippian rocks. The upper sequence in central and northwestern Wyoming comprises mostly dolomite in the lower part but grades upward into mostly sandstone no younger than Des Moinesian. The upper sequence in eastern Wyoming comprises sandstone and dolomite about equally and also includes Upper Pennsylvanian strata as young as Virgilian. Upper Pennsylvanian strata also occur as part of the upper sequence in the thrust belt in western Wyoming. Pennsylvanian strata terminate upward at an erosional unconformity beneath Permian rocks everywhere in Wyoming.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The last known eruption occurred about 200 radiocarbon years ago. Eruptions during the last 10,000 years produced lava flows and domes on and around the flanks of Mount Shasta, and pyroclastic flows from summit and flank vents extended as far as 20 km from the summit. Most of these eruptions also produced large mudflows, many of which reached more than several tens of kilometers from Mount Shasta. Future eruptions like those of the past may endanger the communities of Weed, Mount Shasta, McCloud, and Dunsmuir located on or near the flanks of Mount Shasta. This report describes the likely nature of future eruptions and the threat that they present to people and property situated around Mount Shasta; accompanying maps delineate areas likely to be affected during future eruptions in the vicinity of Mount Shasta. Future eruptions will most likely consist of lava flows, domes, and pyroclastic flows. Lava flows and pyroclastic flows may affect low and flat- lying ground almost anywhere within about 20 km of the summit of Mount Shasta, and mudflows may cover valley floors and other low areas as much as several tens of kilometers from the volcano. Later study extended the known area of radioactivity to a total length of about 30 km. Mineralogic studies indicated that the samples were low in uranium and that the radioactivity was due principally to thorium in niobium-bearing minerals. Two samples were reexamined to identify the sources of radioactivity, but X-ray and alpha plate studies did not reveal the radioactive minerals, even though uranium mineralization was indicated by the alpha plates. Further sampling is suggested to isolate the sources of radioactivity. This study indicates that niobium occurrences are related to alkaline intrusives in many areas of western Saudi Arabia. Nearly coincidentally, a sharp earthquake occurred 2 miles south of the city of Santa Barbara at 3:55 p.m. PDT on August 13, 1978. A task group was formed by the Director, Geological Survey, on August 14, mainly because of concern over the high down-hole pressures in the well. The charge to the task group was to study the situation fully in order that appropriate and immediate measures could be directed to protect against a fracturing of rock formations in the vicinity of the hole that might permit the escape of gas or oil to the surface. This ground-water reservoir is composed of an upper aquifer and an underlying sandstone aquifer. High-capacity water-supply wells pump from the sandstone aquifer.</p>\n<p>Pumping from the sandstone aquifer has resulted in hydrologic changes. The water level has dropped in both the upper aquifer and underlying sandstone aquifer, and the flow of water in streams has been reduced.</p>\n<p>The effects of anticipated pumping were examined with the use of a digital model. The maximum water-level decline from the beginning of pumping in 1882 until 1975 was about 75 feet in the sandstone aquifer and 10 to 20 feet in the upper aquifer. Additional declines between 1975 and 2000 were computed to be 10 to 30 feet in the sandstone aquifer and 5 to 10 feet in the upper aquifer. The average annual streamflow of the Yahara River at the McFarland gaging station was reduced 32 percent from the beginning of pumping to 1975. and those streams on Mason Neck tributary to the Potomac River are presented in this report.</p><p>The techniques used in the computation of the flood profiles and delineation of flood boundaries are Historical average annual Dead Sea levels range from a minimum of 399.4 meters below sea level in about 1818 to a maximum of 388.6 meters below in 1896. Present levels are rapidly approaching the historical low. There is a close correlation between Dead Sea level and accumulated departure from the mean of long-term rainfall except for the most recent period since 1964. During that period rainfall has been near the long-term average but water levels have continued to decline, in part due to abstractions for irrigation in the Jordan River basin.</p><p>The dissolved-solids concentration of Dead Sea water presently is approximately 322,000 milligrams per liter and is generally well mixed throughout. This concentration is at the saturation level, resulting in continuous precipitation of some salts. The increase in dissolved solids to the present high concentration has resulted in an evaporation rate less than that estimated in previous reports. Evaporation rate from the North Basin is estimated at 1,310 millimeters per year at present. The evaporation rate from the South Basin was not estimated due to extensive existing or planned modifications for mineral production facilities.</p><p>Water budget computations were performed at various inflow rates in order to project water-level changes for 50 years. Computations assumed closure of the South Basin by existing and proposed mineral extraction facilities. The projected 50-year changes ranged from a decline of 51 meters with no inflow from any sources to a rise of 10.2 meters when average annual inflow from the Jordan River was 750 cubic hectometers. An average annual inflow to the Sea of 900 cubic hectometers from all sources is required to stabilize the Sea at the present level. Principal impact of declining water levels on proposed potash production facilities in Jordan would be an increase in power requirements.</p><p>A cursory review of a proposed plan to divert water from the Mediterranean Sea into the Dead Sea to generate electric power and stabilize water levels indicates a very limited impact on chemical, physical, and ecological characteristics of the Dead Sea in the near future.
