S. Geological Survey's National Center is on a 105-acre tract straddling rocks of two distinct types. These are pelitic schists of late Precambrian and early Paleozoic age; and sandstone, shale, siltstone, and conglomerate of Triassic age. Within the Triassic part is a diabase dike and an associated contact metamorphic zone.</p><p>Two observation wells and two core holes were drilled on the part of the property underlain by Triassic rocks. The wells are 10-inch and 8-inch diameter and were drilled to depths of 165 feet and 205 feet. The wells were drilled to monitor water levels, for equipment testing, and to determine the hydraulic properties of the Triassic rocks. Geophysical logs were run, and good correlations were found between the electric and caliper logs and the lithologic logs prepared from drill cuttings and cores.</p><p>An aquifer test was made and was analyzed by the Theis method which considers nonleaky artesian conditions and the Streltsova method which considers flow in fractured rocks. The test results suggest that transmissivity of the sandstone aquifer is about 40 ft2/day. Flowmeter surveys showed that the water comes from two thin zones parallel to the bedding. The flowmeter surveys, core samples, and geophysical logs suggest that the Triassic sandstone is a fractured-rock aquifer. Water is probably derived from partings and joints parallel to bedding which in turn are fed by vertical joints and fractures.</p><p>A water sample taken at the close of the aquifer test indicates that the water has a low dissolved solids content, is soft, and is generally of excellent quality.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78144","usgsCitation":"Larson, J.D., 1978, Hydrogeology of the observation well site at the United States Geological Survey National Center, Reston, Virginia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-144, 35 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78144.","productDescription":"35 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":407898,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0144/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142423,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0144/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Virginia","city":"Reston","otherGeospatial":"United States Geological Survey National Center","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -77.37044334411621,\n              38.94393982589585\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.36407041549683,\n              38.94393982589585\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.36407041549683,\n              38.948212067795126\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.37044334411621,\n              38.948212067795126\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.37044334411621,\n              38.94393982589585\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad8e4b07f02db684702","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Larson, J. At the disposal site, wastewater is stored in two 850-acre (344-ha) lagoons and then spray-irrigated on crop land. About 70 miles (105 km) of drainage tile, which underlies the irrigated land, has caused the water table to be lowered substantially. The decline in water levels has been partially offset by irrigation and leakage from the lagoons; at some places the water table is higher than it was prior to construction. Predictive simulations by the model were used to study the effects of varying tile drainage, amount of irrigation water applied, lagoon leakage, and natural ground-water recharge. If the effectiveness of the tile to collect drainage is reduced by 75 percent, large areas within the wastewater site would become waterlogged. However, the effect outside of the wastewater site would be negligible.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr7899","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Geology Division, Michigan Department of Natural Resources","usgsCitation":"McDonald, M.G., and Fleck, W.B., 1978, Model analysis of the impact on ground-water conditions of the Muskegon County wastewater disposal system, Michigan: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-99, iv, 63 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7899.","productDescription":"iv, 63 p.","costCenters":[{"id":382,"text":"Michigan Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":412958,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0099/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143091,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0099/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Michigan","county":"Muskegon County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -86.09264373779297,\n              43.21593563039921\n            ],\n            [\n              -86.09264373779297,\n              43.292200750082785\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.98518371582031,\n              43.292200750082785\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.98518371582031,\n              43.21593563039921\n            ],\n            [\n              -86.09264373779297,\n              43.21593563039921\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a26e4b07f02db60fdd6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McDonald, Michael G.","contributorId":47352,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McDonald","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161076,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Fleck, William B.","contributorId":17587,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fleck","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161075,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Resurveys of precise control networks are measuring both vertical and horizontal ground movement, with most of the change continuing in the area of geothermal fluid withdrawal. Preliminary evidence suggests right-lateral horizontal movement on northwest-trending fault systems and vertical and horizontal compression of the deep geothermal reservoir system. A direct correlation is suggested between ground-surface deformation and subsurface pressure changes in the reservoir system. Although surface changes appear too small to be of environmental concern in The Geysers-Clear Lake region, they indicate hydrodynamic changes in the reservoir of significant import. \r\n\r\nTwo types of vertical changes in The Geysers production area are indicated in the 1973-77 data--(a) a regional subsidence between the Collayomi and Mercuryville fault zones and (b) local subsidence directly related to the area of principal steam production. Maximum subsidence of 13 centimeters in 4? years occurred in the area of most concentrated steam withdrawals and where fluid-pressure declines were near maximum. Subsidence rates throughout the production area from 1973 to 1975 were about half the 1975-77 rates in apparent correlation with pressure changes measured in the reservoir system. Horizontal ground movement as great as 2.0 centimeters per year, generally inward toward the center of production, was measured around the perimeter of the steam production area.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78597","usgsCitation":"Lofgren, B.E., 1978, Monitoring crustal deformation in the Geysers-Clear Lake geothermal area, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-597, Report: iv, 19 p.; 6 Plates: 31.38 × 12.74 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78597.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 19 p.; 6 Plates: 31.38 × 12.74 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":409091,"rank":9,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_14803.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":37924,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0597/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37925,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0597/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37923,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0597/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37928,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0597/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37927,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0597/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37926,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0597/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37929,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0597/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":144436,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0597/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Geysers-Clear Lake geothermal area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -123,\n              39\n            ],\n            [\n              -123,\n              38.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.5,\n              38.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.5,\n              39\n            ],\n            [\n              -123,\n              39\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b02e4b07f02db698d27","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lofgren, Ben Elder","contributorId":52973,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lofgren","given":"Ben","email":"","middleInitial":"Elder","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160753,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

These sea bed micro-features are regionally widespread but are not uniformly distributed. Furthermore, the microrelief, texture, and lithologic structure of sea bed sediments have been significantly modified by the disruptive processes associated with ice gouge formation. \r\n\r\nAn analysis of some 10,.200 individual gouges shows that the density of ice gouges increases with increasing latitude, increasing slope gradients, and decreasing water depth. Across the northern half of the shelf few trackline segments are free of ice gouges; in the southern portion numerous segments contain no ice gouges. However, ice gouges extend at least as far south as Cape Prince of Wales Shoal. Densities of over 200 gouges per km of trackline are not uncommon in water depths less than 30 m ,but no values higher than 50 km are encountered in water deeper than 50 m. No ice gouges have been observed in water depths exceeding 58 m. Saturation ice gouge densities (greater than 300/Pan) occur along the eastern side 6f Barrow Sea Valley and the northeast flank of Hanna Shoal. \r\n\r\nMaximum gouge incision depths per km of trackline are greatest in water 36 to 50 m deep . A maximum incision depth of 4.5 m occurs in the 35-40 m water depth interval. Individual ice gouge events wider than 100 m, most produced by multi-keeled ice fragments, are found between 31 and 45 m depths. The dominant azimuth of gouge furrows shows no preferred orientation on the Chukchi Sea shelf; only locally does bathmetric control of the trend of gouges appear. \r\n\r\nThe occurrence of current-produced bedforms within individual ice gouges suggests an interaction between slow-moving grounded or gouging ice keels and swift currents. In other cases, current-produced bedforms, interpreted as being in equilibrium with existing flow regimes, lie adjacent to ice gouges, suggesting contemporary ice gouging to water depths of at least 43 m.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr78693","usgsCitation":"Toimil, L.J., 1978, Ice-gouged microrelief on the floor of the eastern Chukchi Sea, Alaska: a reconnaissance survey: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-693, 44, [68] leaves :ill., maps ;28 cm.; (113 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78693.","productDescription":"44, [68] leaves :ill., maps ;28 cm.; (113 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144818,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0693/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39316,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0693/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ae4b07f02db5fb725","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Toimil, Lawrence J.","contributorId":53806,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Toimil","given":"Lawrence","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163160,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Water-surface profiles were developed for 50-year, 100-year, and September 26, 1975 flood discharges at Camillus for four different channel conditions: (1) with four culverts at Camillus bypass and a bridge at County Road 36 (present conditions); (2) with only the culverts removed; (3) with only County Road 36 bridge removed; and (4) with the culverts and County Road 36 bridge removed (preconstruction conditions) The 50- and 100-year flood discharges at the Camillus gaging station were determined to be 4,700 and 5,500 cubic feet per second, respectively, and the September 1975 flood discharge was measured to be 2,120 cubic feet per second. If the four culverts are removed, peak water-surface elevations at the gaging station in Camillus during the 50- and 100-year flood would be decreased by 0.7 and 0.3 foot, respectively, relative to those calculated for present conditions. Detailed geologic mapping indicates that galena, sphalerite and pyrite occur sporadically in a zone at least 1,830 m. long and 6-30 m. wide. The sulfides occur in tuff, or in dark chert and dark shale adjacent to tuff in the upper part of the Lisburne Group of Mississippian age. The sulfides, together with the tuff, dark shale, and dark chert host, rocks probably are part of a stratiform, massive sulfide deposit that may have formed from volcanic exhalations. The stratiform occurrence of the sulfides is limited to a single thrust plate which is a part of a widespread tectonic breccia. The deposit may represent a fragment of a much more extensive stratiform deposit that was severely disrupted and dismembered by isoclinal folding, faulting and shearing. Other areas along the northern front of the Brooks Range particularly those associated with iron staining and the assemblage of dark chert, dark shale and tuff of the Lisburne Group should be examined for concentrations of galena and sphalerite. Because of the highly deformed nature of the terrain, further exploration should concentrate either on finding the edges of buried, dismembered fragments of the original stratiform deposit or on geophysical techniques that may locate the dismembered fragments at depth.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr7870C","usgsCitation":"Nokleberg, W.J., and Winkler, G., 1978, Geologic setting of the lead and zinc deposits, Drenchwater Creek area, Howard Pass Quadrangle, Western Brooks Range, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-70, Report: 16 p.; 1 Plate: 39.74 x 32.95 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7870C.","productDescription":"Report: 16 p.; 1 Plate: 39.74 x 32.95 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":423342,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0070-c/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":423341,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0070-c/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":144290,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0070-c/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Howard Pass Quadrangle, Western Brooks Range","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -156,\n              69\n            ],\n            [\n              -159,\n              69\n            ],\n            [\n              -159,\n              68\n            ],\n            [\n              -156,\n              68\n            ],\n            [\n              -156,\n              69\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db688237","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nokleberg, Warren J. 0000-0002-1574-8869 wnokleberg@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1574-8869","contributorId":2077,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nokleberg","given":"Warren","email":"wnokleberg@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":161548,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Winkler, Gary R.","contributorId":75513,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Winkler","given":"Gary R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161549,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The catchment are predominantly a single-family residential catchment area in Littleton, a multifamily residential and commercial catchment area in Lakewood, and a high-density residential and commercial catchment area in Denver. Precipitation, rainfall-runoff, snowmelt-runoff, water-quality (common constituents, nutrients, biochemical oxygen demand, coliform bacteria, and solids, trace elements, and pesticides), and catchment-area data are necessary to use the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 's Storm Water Management Model II. The annual mean and annual standard deviation were chosen to represent the development potential of the water resource, while the mean, standard deviation, and the 50-year recurrence interval of the annual flood series were chosen to represent flood potential. Low-flow characteristics were not used because of the inability to model them by regression analysis. Ephemeral streams in the vicinity of the Columbia Plateau were ignored for the same reason.</p><p>The results of the study indicate that the standard errors of estimate of the regression relations were good approximations of the medians of the Bayesian distributions of estimates of inaccuracy and that for the streamflow variables used in the study, little if any improvement can be expected in the regression relations by the collection of additional streamflow data. Improved transferability of streamflow information for these variables has a prerequisite of more accurate information-transfer models.</p><p>It is therefore recommended that the future streamflow-data network contain only those streamflow stations needed to provide data for (1) the design or operation of water-resources projects, (2) the investigation and study of water resources, and (3) monitoring long-term trends in streamflow.<br><br></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78167","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Gold, with by-product silver, occurs in veins and mineralized shear zones in metamorphic rocks of the Piedmont province and in placers derived from these deposits. Copper occurs with complex sulfide ores in quartz veins in the metamorphic rocks of the Piedmont province and in massive pyrrhotite-pyrite deposits in crystalline rocks west of the Blue Ridge. Lead and zinc occur in complex ores of gold, copper, lead, zinc, and silver in veins and replacements in metamorphic rocks. Pyrite occurs in crystalline metamorphic rocks. Tin occurs in pegmatite and placer deposits in crystalline rocks near Kings Mountain. Cobalt minerals with ores of iron or gold have been reported in a few areas in the Piedmont. Molybdenum occurs along the borders of a granite body in Halifax County. Tungsten minerals occur with copper sulfide ores in Cabarrus and Vance Counties. Barite occurs in quartz veins and associated with sulfide minerals in Orange, Madison, Cleveland, and Gaston Counties. Ore-earths occur with sulfides in vein deposits in Cabarrus County.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr78152","usgsCitation":"Luttrell, G.W., 1978, Gold, base-metal, and related deposits of North Carolina: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-152, 551 leaves ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78152.","productDescription":"551 leaves ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144615,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0152/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37969,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0152/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abde4b07f02db674008","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Luttrell, Gwendolyn Werth","contributorId":107679,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Luttrell","given":"Gwendolyn","email":"","middleInitial":"Werth","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160845,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
