They are also nearly twice as rich as the average world, wide carbonate (average 0.24 percent). The majority of carbonates have organic carbons less than 0.30 percent but the presence of many relatively organic rich beds composed of highly bituminous, argillaceous, highly stylolitic, and algal-bearing limestones and dolomites accounts for the higher percentage of organic carbon in some of the stratigraphic \r\nunits. \r\n\r\nCarbonate rocks that contain greater than 0.4 percent organic carbon and that might be considered as possible petroleum sources were noted in almost each subdivision of the Coahuilan and Comanchean Series but particularly the units of Fredericksburg 'B', Trinity 'A', Trinity 'F', and Upper Sunniland. Possible source rocks have been ascribed by others to the Lower Sunniland, but lack of sufficient samples precluded any firm assessment in this initial report. \r\n\r\nIn the shallower section of the basin, organic-rich carbonates containing as much as 3.2 percent organic carbon were observed in the lowermost part of the Gulfian Series and carbonate rocks with oil staining or 'dead' and 'live oil' were noted by others in the uppermost Gulfian and upper Cedar Keys Formation. It is questionable whether these shallower rocks are of sufficient thermal maturity to have generated commercial oil.\r\n\r\nThe South Florida basin is still sparsely drilled and produces only from the Sunniland Limestone at an average depth of 11,500 feet (3500 m). Because the Sunniland contains good reservoir rocks and apparently adequate source rocks, and because the success rate of new oil field discoveries has increased in recent years, the chances of finding additional oil reserves in the Sunniland are promising. Furthermore, the presence of possible source rocks in many of the other stratigraphic units, in particular, the Fredericksburg, should give further impetus to exploring for other productive horizons.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78140","usgsCitation":"Palacas, J.G., 1978, Distribution of organic carbon and petroleum source rock potential of Cretaceous and lower Tertiary carbonates, south Florida basin: Preliminary results: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-140, Report: 43 p.; 6 Plates: 11.32 × 57.82 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78140.","productDescription":"Report: 43 p.; 6 Plates: 11.32 × 57.82 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":406869,"rank":9,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_74835.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":38435,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0140/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38434,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0140/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38433,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0140/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38432,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0140/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38431,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0140/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38430,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0140/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38429,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0140/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143028,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0140/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"south Florida basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -86,\n              24.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -80,\n              24.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -80,\n              28\n            ],\n            [\n              -86,\n              28\n            ],\n            [\n              -86,\n              24.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6fe4b07f02db640834","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Palacas, James George","contributorId":72791,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Palacas","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"George","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161656,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

A comparison of facies relations in the locally uraniferous Chapin Wash Formation and the position of the Anderson mine gravity anomaly in the Date Creek Basin suggested that a relationship between gravity lows and the development of thick lacustrine sections in the region might exist. A second-order residual gravity map derived from the complete Bouguer gravity map for the survey area (derived from survey data and pre-existing U.S. Department of Defense data) shows an excellent correspondence between gravity lows and sediment-filled basins and suggests considerable variation in basin-fill thickness. Using the Anderson mine anomaly as a model, gravity data and facies relations suggest that the southeastern flank of the Aguila Valley gravity low and the gravity low at the western end of the Hassayampa Plain are likely areas for finding thick sections of tuffaceous lacustrine rocks.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78845","usgsCitation":"Otton, J.K., and Wynn, J.C., 1978, Geologic interpretation of gravity data from the Date Creek basin and adjacent areas, west-central Arizona: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-845, 18 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78845.","productDescription":"18 p.","costCenters":[{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":408002,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_74941.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":38402,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0845/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":144154,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0845/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona","otherGeospatial":"Date Creek basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -114,\n              33.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -113,\n              33.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -113,\n              34.375\n            ],\n            [\n              -114,\n              34.375\n            ],\n            [\n              -114,\n              33.75\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b16e4b07f02db6a54a2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Otton, James K. jkotton@usgs.gov","contributorId":1170,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Otton","given":"James","email":"jkotton@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":161612,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wynn, Jeffrey C.","contributorId":81081,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wynn","given":"Jeffrey","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161613,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

In a 400-square-mile area directly north and east of Johnstown, rainfall totals of 6 to 12 inches were measured in a six to eight-hour period. Flood peaks having recurrence intervals greater than 100 years were recorded at several sites, primarily in the Conemaugh River basin. Runoff rates were as high as 2,390 cubic feet per second per square mile, in a 5.86-square-mile drainage area in the Little Conemaugh River basin. The Conemaugh River at Seward, which drains 715 square miles, had a peak discharge of 161 cubic feet per second per square mile. The flood waters claimed at least 78 lives and caused total losses in excess of $300 million. Also, seven earthfill dams, used mainly for water supply in the Johnstown area, failed. This report describes the storm and the associated flooding. A tabulation of peak gage heights and discharges for the July 1977 flood and for the maximum flood previously known is included for 57 sites. The area, defined as that in which the nodules contain more than 1.8 percent nickel plus copper, is about 2.5 million square kilometers in size, and about half of it is assumed to contain nodules in concentrations greater than 5 kg/m<sup>2</sup> and averaging 11.9 kg/m<sup>2</sup>. Assuming that 20 percent of the nodules in this area of 1.25 million square kilometers would be recoverable, its potentially recoverable resources are about 2.1 billion dry metric tons of nodules averaging about 25 percent Mn, 1.3 percent Ni, 1 percent Cu, 0.22 percent Co, and 0.05 percent Mo--enough to support about 27 mining operations each producing an average of 75 million metric tons of nodules over their lifetimes. Estimates based on other plausible assumptions would be higher or lower, but of the same order of magnitude. Thus it seems probable that the magnitude of the potentially recoverable nodule resources of the Clarion-Clipperton prime area--the most promising now known--is at most in the range of several tens of the average-size operations postulated.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78814","usgsCitation":"McKelvey, V., Wright, N.A., and Rowland, R.W., 1978, Manganese nodule resources in the northeastern equatorial Pacific: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-814, 36 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78814.","productDescription":"36 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":425091,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0814/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143391,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0814/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a82e4b07f02db64ae2a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McKelvey, V.E.","contributorId":85161,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McKelvey","given":"V.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161137,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wright, Nancy A.","contributorId":28586,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wright","given":"Nancy","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161135,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Rowland, Robert W.","contributorId":42200,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rowland","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161136,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Measurements of runoff and sediment yield from four watersheds were made for 3 years, at which time two watersheds were plowed and seeded to beardless bluebunch wheatgrass. The same measurements were then continued for an additional 6 years.</p><p>Measurements indicated that conversion to grass caused a reduction in runoff from summer rainstorms of about 75 percent. Runoff from spring snowmelt increased about 12 percent and annual runoff from treated watersheds decreased about 20 percent when compared to control watersheds. Sediment yield from the seeded watersheds was reduced by about 80 percent. Most of this reduction is related to the decrease in runoff from summer rainstorms.</p><p>The size of barren interspaces between plants was reduced on the converted watersheds to about 30 percent of those on the untreated watersheds. Water for domestic and stock use is available from the upper part of the Hell Creek Formation of Late Cretaceous age and the lower part of the Fort Union Formation of Paleocene age. Water for irrigation can be obtained from alluvium of Holocene and Pleistocene age along the Powder River. The Fox Hills-lower Hell Creek aquifer yields as much as 188 gallons per minute to wells as deep as 999 feet, but most well yields are 20 gallons per minute or less. The upper part of the Hell Creek Formation yields as much as 12 gallons per minute to wells as deep as 465 feet. The lower part of the Fort Union Formation yields a maximum of 25 gallons per minute to wells as deep as 373 feet. The alluvium of the Powder River yields 600 gallons per minute to the only known irrigation well, which is 40 feet deep.</p><p>Water from the Fox Hills-lower Hell Creek aquifer generally contains sodium and bicarbonate or sulfate as the major ions; dissolved-solids concentration is as much as 1,700 milligrams per liter. Sodium, bicarbonate, and sulfate were the major ions in two samples from the upper part of the Hell Creek Formation; the dissolved-solids concentration was 840 milligrams per liter in both samples. Water from the Fort Union Formation contains principally sodium, sulfate, and bicarbonate ions; the dissolved-solids concentration ranges from 780 to 2,300 milligrams per liter. One water sample from the alluvium contained principally sodium and sulfate ions and had a dissolved-solids concentration of 2,300 milligrams per liter.</p><p>The Powder River is the only perennial stream in the study area. The average annual discharge of the Powder River near Locate for the period of record, 1938-69, was 601 cubic feet per second. instantaneous discharge ranged from 0 to 31,000 cubic feet per second. Dissolved-solids concentration of water from the Powder River for the period of record, 1949-63, ranged from 278 to 5,430 milligrams per liter. Under the Earthquake Hazard Reduction Act of\n1977 the Federal government is significantly increasing its effort \"to\nreduce the risk of life and property from future earthquakes in the\nUnited States through the establishment and maintenance of an effective\nearthquake hazards reduction program.\" This program involves research,\nfor example, by geologists, seismologists, engineers, sociologists,\neducators, and public policy experts sponsored primarily by the U.S.\nGeological Survey and the National Science Foundation. There is a heavy\nemphasis, however, on the implementation of these results in local\ncommunities. When all the research results are available, the benefits\nof these efforts will depend on whether individual citizens living in\nearthquake zones accurately perceive the relative importance of\nearthquake hazards. All but two of the known kimberlites occur in the Colorado-Wyoming State Line district or in the Iron Mountain, Wyoming, district (fig. 1). A single kimberlite dike is located at Estes Park, Colo., and a small pipe-like body occurs immediately west of Boulder, Colo. (fig. 1). Continuous research for the purpose of locating and characterizing kimberlite in the Front Range has been conducted from 1960 to the present, primarily by M. E. McCallum, D. H. Eggler, and Colorado State University graduate students. The Boulder kimberlite specifically has been studied by Kridelbaugh and others, 1972; Kridelbaugh and Meyer, 1973; Moyer and Kridelbaugh, 1977; and Boctor and Meyer, 1977.</p><p>As part of the overall kimberlite project directed by M.
