Urban development typically degrades the water quality when formerly natural lands are developed. In Emigration Canyon, however, residential development is replacing land formerly used for grazing and recreation. Along with this gas, water is also brought to the surface. The amount of water produced from most CBM wells is relatively high compared to conventional natural gas wells because coal beds contain many fractures and pores that can contain and transmit large volumes of water. In some areas, coal beds may function as regional or local aquifers and important sources for ground water. The water in coal beds contributes to pressure in the reservoir that keeps methane gas adsorbed to the surface of the coal. This water must be removed by pumping in order to lower the pressure in the reservoir and stimulate desorption of methane from the coal (fi g. 1). Over time, volumes of pumped water typically decrease and the production of gas increases as coal beds near the well bore are dewatered.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs15600","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 2000, Water produced with coal-bed methane: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 156-00, 2 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs15600.","productDescription":"2 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":121435,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2000/0156/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":32047,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2000/0156/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":555,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/fs-0156-00/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a08e4b07f02db5f9c5a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":528564,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This aquifer consists of the saturated part of the Ogallala Formation and saturated materials of Quaternary Age that are hydraulically connected to the Ogallala. The High Plains aquifer in northwestern Oklahoma is the primary source of water to an important agricultural region. Most water is withdrawn from the aquifer for irrigating wheat and other grain crops, with the remainder used for livestock (primarily cattle and swine), municipal, and domestic needs. Historically, water from precipitation was thought to take hundreds or thousands of years to reach the water table because the depth of the water table is greater than 100 feet over most of the aquifer and the low-permeability beds in the Ogallala would impede downward flow. It also was thought that land uses would take a similar period of time to affect water quality in the aquifer.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/fs13700","usgsCitation":"Andrews, W.J., Osborn, N.I., and Luckey, R.R., 2000, Rapid recharge of parts of the high plains aquifer indicated by a reconnaissance study in Oklahoma, 1999: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 137-00, 4 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs13700.","productDescription":"4 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":372664,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/FS-137-00/pdf/fs-137-00.pdf"},{"id":124984,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/fs_137_00.bmp"}],"country":"United States","state":"Oklahoma","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -99.99755859375,\n              35.77771427205079\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.734130859375,\n              36.049098959065645\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.76708984374999,\n              36.686041276581925\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.78356933593749,\n              37.00693943418586\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.0133056640625,\n              36.99816565700228\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.018798828125,\n              36.49638952000399\n            ],\n            [\n              -100.0030517578125,\n              36.49638952000399\n            ],\n            [\n              -99.99755859375,\n              35.77771427205079\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a80e4b07f02db64948b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Andrews, William J. 0000-0003-4780-8835 wandrews@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4780-8835","contributorId":328,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Andrews","given":"William","email":"wandrews@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":516,"text":"Oklahoma Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":150659,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Osborn, Noel I. nosborn@usgs.gov","contributorId":3305,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Osborn","given":"Noel","email":"nosborn@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"I.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":150660,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Luckey, Richard R.","contributorId":17980,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Luckey","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":150661,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

One component of NAWQA is an occurrence survey of organic contaminants and trace elements in stream bed sediment and fish tissue.</p><p>The goal of the Oahu stream bed sediment and fish tissue occurrence survey was to determine which organochlorine contaminants are present in streams around the island, and with which land uses they are associated. An understanding of relations between land use and organochlorine compounds will allow land management practices to be designed to reduce the loading of contaminants to streams and nearshore waters.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs14000","usgsCitation":"Brasher, A.M., and Anthony, S., 2000, Occurrence of organochlorine pesticides in streambed sediment and fish from selected streams on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, 1998: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 140-00, 6 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs14000.","productDescription":"6 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":525,"text":"Pacific Islands Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":123090,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/fs_140_00.bmp"},{"id":402300,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_34384.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":13723,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2000/140/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Hawaii","otherGeospatial":"Oahu","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -157.68539428710938,\n              21.256101625916397\n            ],\n            [\n              -157.6332092285156,\n              21.304728462151672\n            ],\n            [\n              -157.71835327148438,\n              21.46968358313921\n            ],\n            [\n              -157.97927856445312,\n              21.72378293037045\n            ],\n            [\n              -158.05343627929688,\n              21.684228980260183\n            ],\n            [\n              -158.12347412109375,\n              21.59870432924491\n            ],\n            [\n              -158.29788208007812,\n              21.580827113688514\n            ],\n            [\n              -158.24569702148438,\n              21.531014668261573\n            ],\n            [\n              -158.24157714843747,\n              21.451790481559417\n            ],\n            [\n              -158.18939208984375,\n              21.423668314313243\n            ],\n            [\n              -158.18389892578125,\n              21.38786863137487\n            ],\n            [\n              -158.1536865234375,\n              21.372523226942395\n            ],\n            [\n              -158.11111450195312,\n              21.286815182224156\n            ],\n            [\n              -157.95867919921875,\n              21.30856673806807\n            ],\n            [\n              -157.94906616210938,\n              21.29705160950195\n            ],\n            [\n              -157.87765502929688,\n              21.27913739410871\n            ],\n            [\n              -157.82272338867188,\n              21.24586234991347\n            ],\n            [\n              -157.68539428710938,\n              21.256101625916397\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4af7e4b07f02db69358a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Brasher, Anne M. That report and one for the area upstream from Laguna Dam (Wilson and Owen-Joyce, 1994) document the accounting-surface method to identify wells that yield water that will be replaced by water from the Colorado River.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Downstream from Laguna Dam, the Colorado River is the source for nearly all recharge to the river aquifer. The complex surface-water and ground-water system that exists in the area is, in part, the result of more than 100 years of water-resources development. Agriculture is the principal economy and is possible only with irrigation. The construction and operation of canals provides the means to divert and distribute Colorado River water to irrigate agricultural lands on the flood plains and mesas along the Colorado and Gila Rivers, in Imperial and Coachella Valleys, and in the area upstream from Dome along the Gila River. Water is withdrawn from wells for irrigation, dewatering, and domestic use. The area downstream from Laguna Dam borders additional areas of agricultural development in Mexico where Colorado River water also is diverted for irrigation.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs12500","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Bureau of Reclamation","usgsCitation":"Owen-Joyce, S.J., 2000, Identifying wells downstream from Laguna Dam that yield water that will be replaced by water from the Colorado River, Arizona and California: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 125-00, 4 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs12500.","productDescription":"4 p.","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[{"id":128,"text":"Arizona Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":287717,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":287716,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/0125-00/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona;California","otherGeospatial":"Colorado River","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -115.0,32.0 ], [ -115.0,33.0 ], [ -114.0,33.0 ], [ -114.0,32.0 ], [ -115.0,32.0 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c740","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Owen-Joyce, Sandra J. 0000-0002-4400-5618 sjowen@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4400-5618","contributorId":5215,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Owen-Joyce","given":"Sandra","email":"sjowen@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":153244,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Freshwater mussels are relatively immobile, imbedded in the streambed with part of the shell sticking up into the water so that they can filter water to obtain oxygen and food. This lack of mobility makes them particularly vulnerable to water and sediment contamination, changes in sedimentation, or prolonged drought. Thus, ecosystem health and stability are critical for their reproduction and survival.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/fs12400","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 2000, What makes a healthy environment for native freshwater mussels?: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 124-00, 1 folded sheet ([6] p.) : col. ill., col. map ; 28 cm. col. ill., col. map, https://doi.org/10.3133/fs12400.","productDescription":"1 folded sheet ([6] p.) : col. ill., col. map ; 28 cm. col. ill., col. map","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":125257,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2000/0124/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":32045,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2000/0124/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e1e4b07f02db5e4959","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":528562,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It is used for drinking water, irrigation, and domestic, commercial, and industrial needs. Ground water provides about 99 percent of Hawaii's domestic water and about 50 percent of all freshwater used in the State. Total ground water pumped in Hawaii was about 500 million gallons per day during 1995, which is less than 3 percent of the average total rainfall (about 21 billion gallons per day) in Hawaii. From this perspective, the ground-water resource appears ample; however, much of the rainfall runs off to the ocean in streams or returns to the atmosphere by evapotranspiration. Furthermore, ground-water resources can be limited because of water-quality, environmental, or economic concerns.\r\n\r\nWater beneath the ground surface occurs in two principal zones: the unsaturated zone and the saturated zone. In the unsaturated zone, the pore spaces in rocks contain both air and water, whereas in the saturated zone, the pore spaces are filled with water. The upper surface of the saturated zone is referred to as the water table. Water below the water table is referred to as ground water. Ground-water salinity can range from freshwater to that of seawater. Freshwater is commonly considered to be water with a chloride concentration less than 250 mg/L, and this concentration represents about 1.3 percent of the chloride concentration of seawater (19,500 mg/L).
