However, in broad areas of the eastern Rocky Mountains and western Great Plains, dolomite is a dominant constituent and in places the Madison is almost entirely dolomite. Within these areas maximum porosity development is found and it seems to be related to the coarser crystalline dolomite facies. The porosity development is associated with tabular and fairly continuous crystalline dolomite beds separated by non-porous limestones. \r\n\r\nThe maximum porosity development in the Bighorn Dolomite, as in the Madison, is directly associated with the occurrence of a more coarsely crystalline sucrosic dolomite facies. Well data indicate, however, that where the Bighorn is present in the deeper parts of the Powder River Basin, it may be dominated by a finer crystalline dolomite facies of low porosity. \r\n\r\nThe 'Winnipeg Sandstone' is a clean, generally well-sorted, medium-grained sandstone. It shows good porosity development in parts of the northern Powder River Basin and northwestern South Dakota. Because the sandstone is silica-cemented and quartzitic in areas of deep burial, good porosity is expected only where it is no deeper than a few thousand feet. \r\n\r\nThe Flathead Sandstone is a predominantly quartzose, slightly feldspathic sandstone, commonly cemented with iron oxide. Like the 'Winnipeg Sandstone,' it too is silica-cemented and quartzitic in many places so that its porosity is poor in areas of deep burial. \r\n\r\nIllustrations in this report show the thickness, percent dolomite, and porosity-feet for the Bighorn Dolomite and the Madison Limestone and its subdivisions. The study is to access the mineral resource potential of the area by integrated geologic, geochemical, and geophysical studies.</p><p>The geochemical work to date has been directed at the characterization of the sedimentary and igneous rocks in the quadrangle through spectrographic and chemical analyses of whole-rock samples and dilute-hydrochloric-acid insoluble-residue samples of whole rock from widely spaced drill holes. Sixty-two drill holes have been selected for study from the sample library of the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey. None of the holes are company-confidential, none intersect economically significant mineralized ground, and only a few are located in known ore-bearing trends.</p><p>The analytical results for drill hole no. 14, Missouri log numbers 27179 and 21181, and for drill hole no. 15, Missouri log number 26598, are given in this report. Drill hole no. 14 is located in sec. 32, T. 37 N., R. 2 E., in Washington County, and drill hole no. 15 is located in sec. 25, T. 38 N., R. 4 E., in St. Francois This review of the literature summarizes the classes and separations of naturally occurring organic material but the emphasis is on soluble organic species. The main class of materials of interest is humic substances which are high-molecular-weight complex molecules that are soluble in alkaline solution. These humic substances are able to solubilize (make soluble) minerals and also to complex [by ion exchange and (or) chelation] many cations. The natural process of soil formation results in both mineral decomposition and element complexing by organic species. Uranium in solution, such as ground water, can form many species with other elements or complexes present depending on Eh and pH. In natural systems (oxidizing Eh, pH 5-9) the uranium is usually present as a complex with hydroxide or carbonate. Thermodynamic data for these species are presented. \r\n\r\nInteracting metals and organic materials have been observed in nature and studied in the laboratory by many workers in diverse scientific disciplines. The results are not easily compared. Measurements of the degree of complexation are reported as equilibrium stability constant determinations. This type of research has been done for Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni, Co, Mg, Ca, Al, and to a limited degree for U. The use of Conditional Stability Constants has given quantitative results in some cases. The study is to access the mineral resource potential of the area by integrated geologic, geochemical, and geophysical studies.&nbsp;</p><p>The geochemical work to date has been directed at the characterization of the sedimentary and igneous rocks in the quadrangle through spectrographic and chemical analyses of whole-rock samples and dilute-hydrochloric-acid insoluble-residue samples of whole rock from widely spaced drill holes. Sixty-two drill holes have been selected for study from the sample library of the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey. None of the holes are company-confidential, none intersect economically significant mineralized ground, and only a few are located in known ore-bearing trends.&nbsp;</p><p>The analytical results for drill hole No. 10, Missouri log number 25824, are given in this report. The drill hole is located in sec. 25, T. 32 N., R. 10 W., in Texas County. Data for the whole-rock samples are listed in table 1, and data for the insoluble-residue samples are listed in table 2. Missouri log number, county, and location allow correlation with the stratigraphic logs on file at the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey in Rolla, The study is to access the mineral resource potential of the area by integrated geologic, geochemical, and geophysical studies.</p><p>The geochemical work to date has been directed at the characterization of the sedimentary and igneous rocks in the quadrangle through spectrographic and chemical analyses of whole-rock samples and dilute-hydrochloric-acid insoluble-residue samples of whole rock from widely spaced drill holes. Sixty-two drill holes have been selected for study from the sample library of the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey. None of the holes are company confidential, none intersect economically significant mineralized ground, and only a few are located in known ore-bearing trends.</p><p>The analytical results for drill hole No. 12, Missouri log numbers 12195 and 12339, are given in this report. The drill hole is located in sec. 18, T. 34 N., R. 5 W. in Reynolds County. Data of the whole-rock samples are listed in table 1, and data of the insoluble-residue samples are listed in table 2. Missouri log number, county, and location allow correlation with the stratigraphic logs on file at the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey in Rolla, The study is to access the mineral resource potential of the area by integrated geologic, geochemical, and geophysical studies.</p><p>The geochemical work to date has been directed at the characterization of the sedimentary and igneous rocks in the quadrangle through spectrographic and chemical analyses of whole-rock samples and dilute-hydrochloric-acid insoluble-residue samples of whole rock from widely spaced drill holes. Sixty-two drill holes have been selected for study from the sample library of the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey. None of the holes are company-confidential, none intersect economically significant mineralized ground, and only a few are located in known ore-bearing trends.&nbsp;</p><p>The analytical results for drill hole No. 3, Missouri log number 18839, are given in this report. The drill hole is located in sec. 3, T. 34 N., R. 2 W., in Iron County. Data for the whole-rock samples are listed in table 1, and data for the insoluble-residue samples are listed in table 2. Missouri log number, county, and location allow correlation with the stratigraphic logs on file at the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey in Rolla, The study is to access the mineral resource potential of the area by integrated geologic, geochemical, and geophysical studies.</p><p>The geochemical work to date has been directed at the characterization of the sedimentary and igneous rocks in the quadrangle through spectrographic and chemical analyses of whole-rock samples and dilute-hydrochloric-acid insoluble-residue samples of whole rock from widely spaced drill holes. Sixty-two drill holes have been selected for study from the sample library of the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey. None of the holes are company-confidential, none intersect economically significant mineralized ground, and only a few are located in known ore-bearing trends.&nbsp;</p><p>The analytical results for drill hole No. 5, Missouri log number 21245, are given in this report. The drill hole is located in sec. 4, T. 30 N., R. 1 E., in Reynolds County. Data for the whole-rock samples are listed in table 1, and data for the insoluble-residue samples are listed in table 2. Missouri log number, county, and location allow correlation with the stratigraphic logs on file at the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey in Rolla, The data utilized are primarily from stations located near the two ends of this section of the fault where strains accumulation is expected. The magnetic data show that local magnetic field variations up to 1.8 gammas with durations of a few minutes to several months have occurred. The creep data indicate both episodic events and changes in creep rate of up to 10 mm/yr lasting for six months or more. No clear magnetic transients or offsets are evident either simultaneous with or preceding the occurrence times of the episodic creep events by up to a day or so. Although some patterns of creep onset times at adjacent stations appear to correspond to some periods of longer term change in local magnetic field, these changes do not always occur and other groups of creep events have no corresponding changes in local magnetic field. Earthquakes with magnitudes less than 4.0 do not appear to correspond in time to local changes in magnetic field greater than 0.8 gamma or variations in the creep rate.</p><p>In order to explain the observations presented in this study, it appears necessary to allow for a substantial amount of deep aseismic slip without any obvious attendant changes in the time distribution or size of the local earthquakes. Changes in stress related to the surface expression of aseismic slip on the San Andreas fault can be estimated from dislocation models fit to these data and to observations of simultaneous strains and tilts at points near the fault. A variety of problems have developed in the aquifer in recent years, principally declining water levels, saltwater intrusion in coastal areas, water-quality degradation, and inadequate supplies of fresh ground water locally.</p><p>In 1978 the U.S. Geological Survey began a study whose goal is to provide a complete description of the hydrogeologic framework, geochemistry, and regional flow system of the limestone aquifer. A 4-year effort is planned that will include: (1) synthesis of all existing data and presentation on a series of regional hydrogeological and geochemical maps; (2) obtaining new hydrogeological information to fill data voids -- particularly where ongoing State and Federal programs are not likely to generate such data; and (3) design and calibration of a regional digital model of the aquifer system and detailed models of problem areas. The design specifications for both wells called for 24-inch diameter surface casing cemented in place to a depth of about 430 feet, with 16-inch liner and slotted casing from the surface to a depth of about 700 feet. Each well was pumped continuously for 32 hours in a step-drawdown test. This test consisted of four steps, with discharge rates varying from about 500 to 1,150 gallons per minute. The drawdown test for well 21 gave an estimated transmissivity of 17,300 gallons per day per foot, and a final specific capacity of slightly less than 11 gallons per minute per foot of drawdown. The step-drawdown test and later drawdown and recovery test on well 22 gave an average transmissivity of 32,600 gallons per day per foot, and a final specific capacity of about 15 gallons per minute per foot of drawdown. The data collected indicated that the aquifer in the vicinity of well 22 is more permeable than the aquifer around well 21. Both wells furnish a satisfactory quantity of excellent-quality water. The dissolved-solids content of water from wells 21 and 22 is 232 and 301 mg/liter respectively.
