The data were evaluated to assess the quantity and quality of water resources available in the area for use in hydraulic coal mining. Based on discharge records, surface-water supplies of most streams should be adequate to meet the demands for hydraulic mining of 1 million tons of coal per year with a recycled water system. However, on some of the smaller streams in the area, some storage of water may be required for use during low-flow periods to meet minimum-flow requirements for downstream reaches. Other potential sources of water include Rifle Gap Reservoir, Harvey Gap Reservoir, and ground water from valley-fill deposits along major streams and rivers. The surface water and ground water should be of adequate quality for use in hydraulic mining, with the possible exceptions of suspended-sediment concentrations that periodically may be as much as 18,800 milligrams per liter in streams in the Rifle Creek drainage, and dissolved-solids concentrations greater than 20,000 milligrams per liter in some aquifers. Data are insufficient to assess the potential impact of hydraulic coal mining on downstream water quality. Ground water from alluvium along major streams and rivers and, in certain parts of the study area, from the Dakota and Entrada Sandstones, is also a potential source of water for hydraulic coal mining.</p><p>The surface and ground water in the study area should be of adequate quality for use in hydraulic coal mining, with the possible exception of Coal Creek which has excessive concentrations of iron, manganese, and zinc. The principal changes include:\r\n\r\n   1. increasing tape speed from 15/160 ips to 15/80 ips (reducing running time from 10 days to 5 days with a 14' reel of 1 mil tape),\r\n\r\n   2. increasing the FM center frequency by a factor of 4, from 84.4 Hz to 337.6 Hz,\r\n\r\n   3. replacing the original amplifiers and FM modulators with new low-power units,\r\n\r\n   4. replacing the chronometer with a higher quality time code generator (with IRIG-C) to permit automation of data retrieval,\r\n\r\n   5. eliminating the amplifier/WWVB radio field case by incorporating these elements, along with the new TCG, in the weatherproof tape-recorder box,\r\n\r\n   6. reducing the power consumption of the motor-drive circuit by removal of a redundant component.\r\n\r\nIn the new system, the tape-recorder case houses all components except the seismometers, the WWVB antenna, the 70-amp-hour 12-VDC battery (which powers the system for 5 days), and the cables to connect these external elements to the recorder box.\r\n\r\nThe objectives of this report are:\r\n\r\n   1. to describe the new 5-day-recorder seismic system in terms of its constituent parts and their functions,\r\n\r\n   2. to describe modifications to parts of the original system that were retained and to document new or replacement components with appropriate circuit diagrams and constructional details,\r\n\r\n   3. to provide detailed instructions for the correct adjustment or alignment of the system in the laboratory, and\r\n\r\n   4. to provide detailed instructions for installing and operating the system in the field. Four receiving-water sites also were selected to represent the water that will contact the proposed dredged material. Chemical and physical analyses were performed upon core material and native-water samples from these sites as well as upon elutriate samples of specific sediment-receiving water systems. As this study progressed, it became apparent that further analysis would be a duplication of effort as the United States Flood Insurance Administration was requiring similar information. Therefore, it was decided to publish the cross-section data that had been obtained and not to go into further analysis with this study.</p><p>These cross section data can be used in Flood Insurance Administration studies and in other studies related to the planning, development, and management of flood plains. The data were collected by the Caribbean District of the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Puerto Rico Department of Natural Resources. The Bay is open only to the Gulf to the east; the opening is partially blocked by a shallow bank. The bottom sediment distribution in the bay is complex; fine grained material is found in the deep basin, sand and gravel on the shallow bank, and mixtures of sand, gravel and finer sediments nearshore. Richardson current meters were moored l m from the bottom over a one-year period at several locations in the Bay to define the bottom currents and to determine the frequency of bottom sediment movement due to currents. The measurements suggest that the bottom sediments can be expected to move occasionally in certain areas. The maximum bottom current speeds were determined principally by the strong tidal currents in the basin.</p><p>In winter, the near bottom currents were dominated by wind stress associated with storms. Bottom currents in the shallow areas were generally in the direction of the wind while currents in the deep portion of the basin were often opposite to the direction of the wind. Sea-surface setup in the direction of the wind was observed, as well as variations in sea level attributed to changes in the adjacent Gulf of Maine. Adjustment of the bottom current to windstress required approximately 12 hours.</p><p>Total concentrations of suspended particulate matter, in general, were found to be higher in the near-shore and near-bottom waters and lower in the offshore and near-surface waters. Near-bottom concentrations tended to increase as the grain size of the bottom sediments decreases. The technique has been applied to the San Francisco Bay area. Ground shaking, ground failures of various kinds, surface faulting, tsunamis, and earthquake induced fires are all responsible for earthquake building losses. Only losses associated with ground shaking are considered in this report for a number of reasons. Losses associated with various types of ground failure such as landsliding and liquefaction are difficult to estimate because the conditions necessary for these effects to occur are not completely understood and/or may be difficult to identify. Losses related to surface faulting are believed to be small as a proportion of total losses (Algermissen and others, 1972), and losses related to tsunamis have been quite rare along the central California coast. A 4,000 km2 area centered on metropolitan Portland was chosen as the demonstration site, and a four-date Landsat temporal overlay was created which contained January, April, July, and October data collected in 1973. Digital multispectral analysis of single dates and two-date combinations revealed that the spring-summer and summer-fall combinations were the most satisfactory for land cover inventory. Residential, commercial and industrial, improved open space, water, forested, and agriculture land cover categories were obtained consistently in the majority of classification iterations.
