The oil-shale, dawsonite, nahcolite, and halite deposits of the Piceance Creek basin occur in the lacustrine Green River Formation of Eocene age. In the basin the Green River Formation comprises three members. In ascending order, they are the Douglas Creek, the Garden Gulch, and the Parachute Creek Members, \r\n\r\nFour sites are presented for consideration and evaluated on geology and hydrology with respect to shale-oil economics. Evaluated criteria include: (1) stratigraphy, (2) size of site, (3) oil-shale yield, (4) representative quantities of the saline minerals dawsonite and nahcolite, which must be present with a minimum amount of halite, (5) thickness of a 'leached' saline zone, (6) geologic structure, (7) engineering characteristics of rock, (8) representative surface and ground-water conditions, with emphasis on waste disposal and dewatering, and (9) environmental considerations. \r\n\r\nSerious construction and support problems are anticipated in sinking a deep shaft in the Piceance Creek basin. The two major concerns will be dealing with incompetent rock and large inflow of saline ground water, particularly in the leached zone. Engineering support problems will include stabilizing and hardening the rock from which a certain amount of ground water has been removed. \r\n\r\nThe relative suitability of the four potential oil-shale experimental shaft sites in the Piceance Creek basin has been considered on the basis of all available geologic, hydrologic, and engineering data; site 2 is preferred to sites 1, 3, and 4, The units in this report are presented in the form: metric (English). Both units of measurement are necessary as measurements were taken in English units, and most of the contracting agencies involved are using predominantly English units.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr78390","usgsCitation":"Ege, J.R., Leavesley, G., Steele, G., and Weeks, J., 1978, Site evaluation for U.S. Bureau of Mines experimental oil-shale mine, Piceance Creek basin, Rio Blanco County, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-390, ii, 42 p. :ill., maps, graphs (some fold.) ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78390.","productDescription":"ii, 42 p. :ill., maps, graphs (some fold.) ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142183,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0390/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34962,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0390/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f6e4b07f02db5f179f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ege, John R.","contributorId":69534,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ege","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":155931,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Leavesley, G.H.","contributorId":93895,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Leavesley","given":"G.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":155933,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Steele, G.S.","contributorId":79886,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Steele","given":"G.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":155932,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Weeks, J.B.","contributorId":61426,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Weeks","given":"J.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":155930,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

The area lies within the Coronado National Forest and forms a belt around the north, east, and south sides of the Saguaro National Monument (fig. 1). A mineral resource survey was made of the area in 1977 by the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines. This study indicates that the potential for finding metallic or nonmetallic mineral deposits, petroleum or coal or geothermal energy in the study area is low. This appraisal is based on geologic and geochemical investigations and on examination of all mineralized prospects. A geologic map was made of the area and its immediate surrounding. Chemical and spectrographic analyses were made of 1.30 stream-sediment samples and of 143 rock samples. The locations of mining claims were compiled and samples from most of the claims were assayed. There has been no recorded mineral production from within the study area.

The geology of the Rincon Mountains is structurally complex. The core of the Rincon Mountains, lying mainly within the Saguaro National Monument, is underlain by igneous and metamorphic rocks chiefly of Precambrian and Tertiary ages. The study area lies on the flanks of the mountains in a terrain of sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks mainly of Precambrian through mid-Tertiary age. The rocks of this area are cut by many faults, with low-angle or bedding-parallel faults abundant. the distribution of these faulted rocks around the flanks of the Rincon Mountains is the result of a doming in the core area, the sliding of rock masses from the high part of the dome down its flanks, and to the effects of erosion.

The potential for economic metallic mineral deposits is considered low because the known areas of anomalous concentrations of metals are small and the concentration of metals weak and erratic. The surface signs of mineralization are largely restricted to 4 locales in which some prospects exist (fig. 1): (1) east of Colossal Cave, southwest or the Rincon Mountains, (2) north of Happy Valley, east of the mountains, (3) between Roble and Youtcy Canyons, northeast of the mountains, and (4) near Italian Trap north of the mountains. Very little primary sulfide mineralization is present and signs of alteration are restricted to narrow zones along faults and fractures. The geochemical anomalies are weak. The sites at which anomalous values of copper, molybdenum, or silver were obtained are mainly controlled by faults.

Nonmetallic mineral resources occur in deposits that are too small and too remote to be economically attractive. Sand and gravel deposits in the main drainages are similar to larger deposits that occur closer to nearby highways and cities. Limestone and marble present in some of the metamorphic rocks are too impure and too broken for use as dimension stone. Use of this marble as decorative rock is limited by remote markets. Limestone suitable for making cement is not likely to be found in large quantities within the Rincon wilderness study area. Closely spaced fractures in the granitic rocks makes them of little value for building stone.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78596","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Mines","usgsCitation":"Thorman, C.H., Drewes, H., and Lane, M., 1978, Mineral resources of the Rincon wilderness study area, Pima County, Arizona: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-596, iii, 58 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78596.","productDescription":"iii, 58 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":413305,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0596/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":140150,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0596/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona","county":"Pima County","otherGeospatial":"Rincon wilderness study area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -110.76135252193272,\n              32.26816566918097\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.76135252193272,\n              32.088986940125736\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.3780838038202,\n              32.088986940125736\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.3780838038202,\n              32.26816566918097\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.76135252193272,\n              32.26816566918097\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e8e4b07f02db5e8f5f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Thorman, Charles H. cthorman@usgs.gov","contributorId":254,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Thorman","given":"Charles","email":"cthorman@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[{"id":7065,"text":"USGS emeritus","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":155357,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Drewes, Harald","contributorId":52567,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Drewes","given":"Harald","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":155359,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Lane, Michael","contributorId":39756,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lane","given":"Michael","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":155358,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

P. Lee (April 25 - May 11, 1978) seven sonobuoy profiles and 200 km of 24-channel seismic reflection data were recorded in the outer southern California Continental Borderland. These data were obtained, at the request of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP), to evaluate possible drill sites along the southern California continental margin.

The drill sites shown in Figure 1 were proposed by the Ocean Paleo-environmental Panel for DSDP Leg 63--secheduled for Sept. - Nov. 1978. These sites were selected in order to provide an expanded Neogene record of paleoceanographic-paleoclimatic events and associated evolutionary development of planktic communities along the eastern side of the north Pacific Ocean. Site selection was made prior to this survey on the basis of available single-channel seismic reflection profiles. Thus, the proposed sites shown on Fig. 1 may be relocated or eliminated when the data presented in this report are incorporated with earlier data. The combined data will be evaluated for safety and pollution hazards by Leg 63 site proponents and the DSDP safety panels.

The ship's tracks (Fig. 1) were located by an integrated Satellite-Loran C-Doppler Sonar navigation system. Klinger,
U.S. Bureau of Mines, as part of the field work undertaken by the National Geographic-Smithsonian Pyrotechnological Expedition of 1968. Facilities for the analysis of the samples for tin and other metals were not immediately available, but in 1973 arrangements were made for analyses to be made on a time-permitting basis in the U.S. Geological Survey. The original purpose in collecting the samples was to determine whether tin was present in amounts indicative of sources for tin ores used in antiquity for the manufacture of bronze. The results of the analyses not only permitted an evaluation of the potential for tin in the localities sampled, but also afforded chemical and mineralogical data that were interpretable in the context of regional potential for other elements of current industrial use. These include gold, base metals, ferro-alloy metals, beryllium, rare earths, and barium.

The original 60 samples of sand were sieved to make three size fraction (>0.707 mm, <O.707->O.177 mm, and <0.177 mm) for spectrographic and chemical analysis. Splits of these fractions were used for replicate analyses to permit evaluation of the precision of the analytical procedures. Further splitting of the <0.707->0.177 mm sand gave fractions from each sample that were separated in bromoform. Concentrates from the heavy-liquid separations were divided magnetically into six parts from most magnetic to least magnetic. These concentrates were analyzed spectrographically.

The precision of the spectrographic analyses is well within the limits of precision expected from semiquantitative procedures. Such precision allows semiquantitative spectrographic procedures to be used with confidence as a valuable tool for reconnaissance investigations in which multi-element analyses are necessary.

The analyses of the various fractions of sediments and sediment concentrates indicate the sample media in which an element was most likely to occur. Tin exhibited no preferential concentration into any particular medium. However, many elements with which tin is associated, and other elements of industrial use, do concentrate into one or more of the sample media. This indication of a preferred medium permits interpretation of the analyses as to the best sample medium for a particular element in the environment of western Asia.

Cassiterite and/or tin were detected in many samples from Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkey, but in most of the samples the tin was present in normal crustal abundance. Sixteen samples, including seven from Afghanistan, eight from Iran, and one from Turkey contain unusually large amounts of tin. The most notable areas of anomalous tin are near Mirzaka, Qala-i-Asad, and Shah Agha in Afghanistan; near Meshed, Shir Kuh, Natanz, Nodus, and Talmesi in Iran; and on the shore of the Balck Sea just west of Trabzon in Turkey. Even in these localities the tin appears to be a minor element associated with other ores. The most common association of tin is with copper at known mineralized areas. This relation may have historical significance in the context of the development of bronze.

The results of the analyses provided geochemical data on the distribution of other elements of industrial use and clearly identified nine of the ten known mineral deposits represented by the samples. The known metallization at the reported deposits may be only a part of more complex groups of metals.

In Afghanistan an array of anomalous elements at the known gold placers around Mirzaka and along the Anguri River signals the presence of complex ore deposits. These elements are silver, arsenic, gold, bismuth, cadmium, copper, mercury, indium, molybdenum, lead, antimony, tin, thallium, tungsten, and zinc. They may indicate a Carlin-type gold deposit in which the wall-rocks are enriched in micron-sized particles of gold. Other localities in Afghanistan signalled by the results of the analyses to be anomalous and to merit further geochemical exploration are: (1) a reach of the Panjshir River for beryllium, lead, zinc, chromium and nickel; (2) the area near Bamian for beryllium; (3) the Siakhak village area for gold and copper; (4) around Qala-i-Asad and Shah Agha for lead, zinc, gold, and tungsten. Some attention to the distribution of monazite around Siakhak, Shahjui, Qala-i-Asad, and Shah Agha is justified to determine if this ore mineral for the rare earths and thorium is enriched over its normally expectable trace as an accessory mineral in granitic rocks, pelitic schists, and gneisses.

In Iran, the pluton of granodiorite porphyry near Sar Cheshmeh, an area where a huge porphyry copper deposit was being investigated by the Geological Survey of Iran when the present samples were collected in 1968, shows as a strong geochemical anomaly for copper and molybdenum.

The granitic area near Meshed is geochemically enriched persistently in beryllium, tin, and barium, and locally in gold, lanthanum, niobium, yttrium, and other elements. This area deserves a thorough regional geochemical survey for beryl and nonberyl sources of beryllium, for fluorite, and for the ores of niobium, tin, barium, the rare earths, and thorium. Other localities in Iran that merit geochemical exploration on the basis of these data are: ;1) the areas between Tabas and Deyhuk, east of Naiband, and south of Naiband for barium and zinc; (2) a locality about midway between Kerman and Sirdjan for barium, lanthanum, strontium, and zinc; (4) the Meskani copper mine area for mercury, lead, and nickel as well as copper; (5) the Talmesi copper mine area for such other elements as barium, cobalt, mercury, strontium, and zinc; (6) a small pluton of granodiorite north of Natanz for tungsten and base metals; (7) the vicinity of Zendjan for auriferous polymetallic sufide deposits; (8) gold in the gorge 15 km east of Miyaneh; and (9) the area near Nodus for gold, base metals, molybdenum, and niobium, and possibly uranium.

The Harsit River basin in Turkey appears to be a suitable target for geochemical exploration for gold and low-temperature hydrothermal deposits of base metals, barium, and mercury.

<br These spacecraft have demonstrated the effectiveness of Earth sensing, which must now move from the research to the operational phase. Landsat-D is designed to continue the research effort, but NASA, whose charter precludes operations, has not defined an operational system. An operational Landsat has previously been proposed in technical terms, but this concept was limited to the orthographic (2-dimensional) mode demonstrated by Landsat-1, -2, and -3. Mapping involves topography as well as planimetry, and a satellite compatible with the Landsat that also resolves the 3-dimensional mode of topography is proposed. Such a satellite requires very high stability and pointing accuracy. The current state-of-the-art permits such a satellite to be built and flown in a mode suitable for automated modeling of the Earth's surface in 3- as well as 2-dimensional modes. Underlying the province are rocks of the Precambrian basement complex composed mainly of igneous and metamorphic rocks; a thickness of about 3,600 meters of generally horizontal Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic sedimentary rocks; and a variety of Upper Cretaceous and Cenozoic igneous rocks. Sedimentary rocks of the sequence are commonly eroded and well exposed near the present basin margins where Tertiary tectonic activity has uplifted, folded, and faulted the sequence into its present geologic configuration of basins, platforms, monoclines, and other related structural features. Sedimentary rocks of Jurassic age in the southern part of the San Juan Basin contain the largest uranium deposits in the United States, and offer the promise of additional uranium deposits. The two modes occur at 54 ? 4 and 37 ? 3 weight per cent chromic oxide corresponding to chromite designated as high-chromium and high-aluminum chromite respectively. The high-chromium chromite occurs exclusively with highly magnesian olivine (Fo92-97) and some interstitial diopside. The high-aluminum chromite is associated with more ferrous olivine (Fo88-92), diopside, enstatite, and feldspar.\r\n\r\nThe plot of the mole ratios Cr/(Cr+Al+Fe3+) vs. Mg/(Mg+Fe2+) usually presented for alpine chromite is shown to have a high-chromium, high-iron to low-chromium, low-iron trend contrary to that shown by stratiform chromite. This trend is characteristic of alpine type chromite and is termed the alpine trend. However, a trend similar to that for startiform chromite is discernable on the graph for the high-chromium chromite data. This latter trend is well-developed at Red Mountain, Seldovia, Alaska.\r\n\r\nAnalysis of the iron-magnesium distribution coefficient, Kd=(Fe/Mg)ol/(Fe/Mg)ch, between olivine and chromite shows that Kd for the high-chromium chromite from all ultramafic complexes has essentially the same constant value of .05 while the distribution coefficient for the high-aluminum chromite varies with composition of the chromite. These distribution coefficients are also characteristic of alpine-type chromites. The constant value for Kd for the high-chromium chromite and associated high-magnesium olivine in all alpine complexes suggests that they all crystallized under similar physico-chemical conditions.\r\n\r\nThe two types of massive chromite and their associations of silicate minerals suggest the possibility of two populations with different origins. Recrystallization textures associated with the high-aluminum chromite together with field relationships between the gabbro and the chromite pods, suggest that the high-aluminum chromite was formed by metamorphic recrystallization of the ultramafic rocks and adjacent gabbro.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr78119","usgsCitation":"Bird, M.L., 1978, Electron-microprobe study of chromitites associated with alpine ultramafic complexes and some genetic implications: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-119, vi, 39 leaves, 15 leaves of ill. :ill. ;27 cm.; (61 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78119.","productDescription":"vi, 39 leaves, 15 leaves of ill. :ill. ;27 cm.; (61 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140064,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0119/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35451,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0119/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a18e4b07f02db6052c1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bird, M. Twenty-eight wells, 1.25 inch in diameter, were driven to selected depths in 11 of the 12 trenches to obtain gas and water samples for chemical and radiochemical analysis, water-level measurements for evaluation of trench-cover permeability. Gas from unsaturated refuse above the trench water level was detected in nearly all wells. Rapid water-level response in most wells to pumping of water from trench sumps 20 to 275 feet distant showed the refuse to be highly permeable. Described in detail are the methods and equipment used to (1) install the wells, (2) collect gas and water samples, and (3) monitor radiation and methane concentrations while driving wells into trenches.
