Concentrations at sites upstream from reservoirs were greater than those at sites downstream during medium and low flows, but concentrations at sites upstream and downstream were similar during high flow.

Calcium and bicarbonate ions were dominant at most sites during low flows, whereas these ions were codominant with magnesium and sulfate at most sites during high flows.

Dissolved-oxygen concentration ranged from 2.1 to 11.6 milligrams per liter or from 21 to 124 percent of saturation. Low concentrations were associated with the main stem of the river during low flows when sluggish, pooled conditions prevailed.

Concentrations of certain inorganic constituents (including nutrients) were as follows: Dissolved-manganese concentration ranged from 0.02 to 7.3 milligrams per liter. The concentrations were generally higher at sites downstream from reservoirs than at sites upstream and was greater than the problem-causing level 0.05 milligrams per liter at most sites. The high manganese concentrations are probably associated with organic acids in the streams. Dissolved-nitrate concentration (as nitrogen) ranged from 0.03 to 3.3 milligrams per liter, the highest concentrations occurring during winter and spring in drainage from areas of the most intense cultivation. Dissolved-phosphorus concentrations were typically 0.03 milligrams per liter or less, except at one site in September 1975, when the concentration was 0.12 milligrams per liter, and at three sites in July 1976, when concentrations were 0.12, 0.41, and 0.58 milligrams per liter.

Chlorinated hydrocarbons were detected in bed material from two of the three sites sampled. Two micrograms or less per kilogram aldrin, DDT, DDD, DDE, dieldrin, and (or) chlordane and as much as 15 micrograms per kilogram PCB compounds were detected.

Suspended-sediment concentration ranged from 1 to 148 milligrams per liter. Concentrations in two sites downstream from reservoirs were higher for medium and low flows and, despite large changes in flow, were considerably more consistent than the concentrations at two sites unaffected by reservoirs.

Concentrations of fecal-coliform and fecal-streptococcal bacteria ranged from 5 to 9,900 and from 10 to 15,000 colonies per 100 milliliters, respectively. Source of high counts (more than 2,000 colonies per 100 milliliters) is probably livestock upstream from sampling sites.

Diversity indices (genera level) 2.7 and 2.5 at the two sites sampled for benthic invertebrates indicate healthy biologic communities at both sites.

Diversity indices (genera level) of the phytoplankton populations at seven sites ranged from 1.4 to 3.3. The phytoplankton populations were generally well balanced except for stressed communities at two mainstem sites during the September sampling.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Total annual precipitation on the area averages about 7 inches (180 millimeters) and totals about 232,000 acre-feet (286 cubic hectometers). Fish Springs Wash is the major drainage in the area; and, along with numerous smaller washes, it flows only in direct response to precipitation. Runoff from the area is estimated to be about 2,000 acre-feet (2.5 cubic hectometers) per year.

The estimated amount of water recoverable from storage in the upper 100 feet (30 meters) of saturated valley fill is about 550,000 acre-feet (680 cubic hectometers), and most of this water is slightly to moderately saline.

The water in the Fish Springs Flat area ranges from slightly saline to briny, and the predominant ions in the water are sodium and chloride. The water that underlies the mudflats in the northwest part of the area is briny. Water that issues from Fish Springs is slightly saline.

The water in the Fish Springs Flat area is not suitable for drinking. The water that issues from Fish Springs is used for wildlife management, which includes ponding and irrigation of vegetation (chiefly saltgrass) in the Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge. The water from the wells in the area is used for livestock and mining operations.

Ground-water recharge from precipitation is about 4,000 acre-feet (5 cubic hectometers) annually. Ground-water discharge is chiefly by springs and evapotranspiration. The largest springs in the Fish Springs group discharge about 26,000 acre-feet (32 cubic hectometers) annually. All other springs discharge about 600 acre-feet (0.74 cubic hectometer) per year, or only about 2 percent of the total spring discharge. Discharge by evapotranspiration is about 8,000 acre-feet (10 cubic hectometers) per year. Discharge by wells and by subsurface outflow is negligible. The difference between discharge and local recharge--approximately 31,000 acre-feet (38 cubic hectometers)--is assumed to enter the Fish Springs Flat area by interbasin flow.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78312","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Utah Department of Natural Resources Division of Water Rights","usgsCitation":"Bolke, E., and Sumsion, C.T., 1978, Hydrologic reconnaissance of the Fish Springs Flat area, Tooele, Juab and Millard counties, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-312, 46 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78312.","productDescription":"46 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":407755,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0312/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":140331,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0312/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","county":"Juab County, Millard County, Tooele County,","otherGeospatial":"Fish Springs Flat area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -113.653564453125,\n              39.65539876418111\n            ],\n            [\n              -113.26492309570312,\n              39.65539876418111\n            ],\n            [\n              -113.26492309570312,\n              40.03918079694873\n            ],\n            [\n              -113.653564453125,\n              40.03918079694873\n            ],\n            [\n              -113.653564453125,\n              39.65539876418111\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a18e4b07f02db605572","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bolke, E.L.","contributorId":52151,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bolke","given":"E.L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156923,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sumsion, C. Black Mesa is located in northeastern Arizona near the center of the Navajo Indian Reservation and is a prominent topographic high about 500 to 1,000 feet above the surrounding area. Monitoring on and near the mesa consists of measurements of ground-water levels, ground-water quality, and measurements of the quantity, sediment concentration, and chemical quality of surface water.

The surface-water monitoring consists of: (1) rainfall-runoff characteristics in the immediate vicinity of the mine, and (2) surface-flow conditions and water-quality characteristics at a site on Moenkopi Wash at the village of Moenkopi.

Three small watersheds of about 400 acres each are instrumented for the collection of flow data, precipitation data, and water samples for determination of chemical quality and sediment concentration. Each watershed is equipped with a data-collection platform that transmits the data via satellite to a computer that in turn provides near-real time information on rainfall and runoff.

Available data at this time are insufficient to assess the effects of mining on the quantity, sediment concentration, or chemical quality of surface-water runoff.

Water levels in seven wells, measured annually, have not shown significant declines. The water levels in some of the other wells in the network have declined as much as 7 feet, and others have fluctuated in response to seasonal pumping by nearby wells.

","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78459","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Arizona Water Commission","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1978, Progress report on Black Mesa monitoring program; 1977: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-459, vi, 38 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78459.","productDescription":"vi, 38 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":412997,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0459/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143553,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0459/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona","otherGeospatial":"Black Mesa","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -112.06054687499999,\n              34.94899072578227\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.390869140625,\n              34.94899072578227\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.390869140625,\n              36.96744946416934\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.06054687499999,\n              36.96744946416934\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.06054687499999,\n              34.94899072578227\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9be4b07f02db65df2d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":528894,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Analyses of samples of chiefly lacustrine rocks of Oligocene age collected by M. R. Mudge near Lincoln, Mont. showed as much as 1,500 ppm lithium. Since then we have sampled the area in greater detail, and have sampled rocks of similar ages in the Helena and Townsend valleys. \r\n\r\nThe lithium-rich beds crop out in a band about 1.3 km long by 0.3 km wide near the head of Beaver Creek, about 14 km northwest of Lincoln, Mont. These beds consist of laminated marlstone, oil shale, carbonaceous shale, limestone, conglomerate, and tuff. Some parts of this sequence average almost 0.1 percent lithium. The lithium-bearing rocks are too low in grade and volume to be economic. \r\n\r\nSamples of sedimentary rocks of Oligocene age from the Helena and Townsend valleys in the vicinity of Helena, Mont. were generally low in lithium (3-40 ppm). However, samples of rhyolites from the western side of the Helena valley and from the Lava Mountain area were slightly above average in lithium content (6-200 ppm).","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr78430","usgsCitation":"Brenner-Tourtelot, E.F., Meier, A.L., and Curtis, C.A., 1978, Lithium in rocks from the Lincoln, Helena, and Townsend areas, Montana: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-430, 27 leaves :fold. map (in pocket) ;30 cm.; (29 p., 1 sheet - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78430.","productDescription":"27 leaves :fold. map (in pocket) ;30 cm.; (29 p., 1 sheet - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140542,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0430/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35614,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0430/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35615,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0430/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b13e4b07f02db6a37f9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Brenner-Tourtelot, Elizabeth F.","contributorId":103672,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brenner-Tourtelot","given":"Elizabeth","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157033,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Meier, Allen L.","contributorId":14384,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Meier","given":"Allen","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157032,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Curtis, Craig A.","contributorId":103673,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Curtis","given":"Craig","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157034,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Drainage from coal mines is primarily a problem of higher than normal dissolved-solids concentration, whereas, drainage from municipalities is generally a problem of bacteria and phytoplankton. Generally, the water is calcium bicarbonate type, except in streams affected by drainage from coal mines, where the water is a mixed calcium and magnesium sulfate type.

Ranges of concentration (in milligrams per liter) of dissolved solids and of some of the chemical constituents dissolved in streams from September 1975 to July 2976 were: dissolved solids, from 104 to 2, 610; iron, from 0.00 to 150; sulfate, from 14 to 1,900; chloride, from 3.3 to 130; nitrate (as nitrogen), from 0.01 to 5.3; phosphate (as phosphorus), from 0.1 to 1.7; and total organic carbon, from 2.4 to 60. Range of pH was from 2.7 to 9.6. Highest concentrations of iron and sulfate and lowest pH values were measured at sites draining areas mined for coal. Highest concentrations of chloride, phosphate, and total organic carbon were at sites downstream from municipalities.

Ranges of concentration of chlorinated hydrocarbons (in micrograms per kilogram) detected in bed material of streams were: aldrin, from 0.2 to 0.4; chlordane, from 0 to 13; DDE, from 0.0 to 0.3; dieldrin, from 0.0 to 9.8; and heptachlor epoxide, from 0 to 1.0. Source of these materials is probably drainage from croplands.

Streams draining municipalities were affected by human wastes and had high populations of fecal coliform bacteria (as many as 46,000 colonies per 100 ml) and phytoplankton (as many as 190,000 cells per milliliter). Dissolved-oxygen concentration ranged from 2.8 to 15.0 milligrams per liter (from 26 to 194 percent of saturation).
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Discharge measurements at the partial-record sites were correlated with records from three suitable continuous-record gaging stations near the town to determine 7-day, 2-year low flows and 7-day, 10-year low flows. Measurement-site descriptions are included. More than 20 million acre-feet of freshwater is estimated to be in storage in the basin fill of westernmost Texas. About 12 million acre-feet, or more than half, is in El Paso County in the Hueco bolson and Mesilla Valley. In addition, the basins contain about 7 million acre-feet of slightly saline water in basin fill, in Rio Grande alluvium in the Hueco bolson and lower Mesilla Valley, and in the Capitan Limestone in the northern Salt Basin. Ground-water pumping for municipal supply and industrial use in the El Paso area caused water-level declines of as much as 74 feet during 1903-73, and pumping for irrigation in the Salt Basin caused a maximum decline of 150 feet at Lobo Flat during 1949-73. Additional development of ground water in westernmost Texas will be accompanied by further declines in water levels, and will probably induce local migration of slightly saline or poorer quality water into freshwater areas. Land-surface subsidence could occur in local areas where water-level declines are large and the basin fill contains large amounts of compressible clay. These references were compiled by the silica subcommittee of Working Group IV at the 1977 meeting of LAPS in Moscow. The data summarized in these references cover the temperature range of 0° to 900°C at pressures from atmospheric to 1000 mega pascals.

Preliminary examination of the data suggests that a good correlation of the solubility of silica can be obtained from temperature and log specific volume of water (Fig. 1). The available solubility data (log weight percent silica) tend to lie along smooth curves at constant temperature as a function of log specific volume of water. In addition the data appear to be reasonably consistent, such that a single equation can be derived that describes the solubility of quartz from 0° to 900°C at pressures up to 1000 mega pascals.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78731","usgsCitation":"Potter, R., Marshall, W., Fournier, R., and Martynova, O., 1978, Bibliography of the available data on the solubility of silica in water substance: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-731, 7 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78731.","productDescription":"7 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":139559,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0731/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":422747,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0731/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4ee4b07f02db627d78","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Potter, Robert W.","contributorId":27045,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Potter","given":"Robert W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153937,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Marshall, W.L.","contributorId":59785,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Marshall","given":"W.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153938,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Fournier, R.O.","contributorId":73584,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fournier","given":"R.O.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153939,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Martynova, O.I.","contributorId":102467,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Martynova","given":"O.I.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153940,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Mountain Lake area contains about 3000 ha in Giles County, a little more than 570 ha in Craig County, Va., and nearly 1230 ha in Monroe County, W. Va. A small part of each study area is privately owned-- about 5 percent of Mill Creek, 20 percent of Mountain Lake and 2 percent of Peters Mountain. The U.S. Forest Service owns the mineral rights on all the Government land except for about 162 ha in the Peters Mountain arca. The three study areas are in the western part of the Valley and Ridge physiographic province and are therefore part of the folded Appalachians, which contain deformed sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic age. The same elastic marine and non—marine sedimentary rock formations ranging in age from Late Ordovician to Middle Devonian are exposed throughout the region. Sandstones of the Juniata, Tuscarora, and Keefer Formations form cliffs, ridges and steep dip slopes. The distinctive hematitic sandstone beds of the Rose Hill Formation cover any dip slopes with red sandstone blocks. Faults are identified chiefly by the disruption of mappable layers within sequences of plagioclase and plagioclase-olivine cumulates. Most layers grade from olivine-rich bottoms to plagioclase-rich tops and were probably deposited by density currents. Faults trend principally N35?E, N05?W, and N40?W. The recognition of intense faulting and fracturing in this region and an understanding of the currents responsible for cumulate deposition establish a basic geologic framework with important local and regional implications.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr78385","usgsCitation":"Foose, M.P., and Cooper, R.W., 1978, Preliminary geologic report on the Harris Lake area, northeastern Minnesota: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-385, [3], 24 leaves :ill., maps (1 fold. in envelope) ;28 cm.; (27 p., 1 sheet, scale 1:12,000 - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78385.","productDescription":"[3], 24 leaves :ill., maps (1 fold. in envelope) ;28 cm.; (27 p., 1 sheet, scale 1:12,000 - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142653,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0385/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36444,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0385/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36445,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0385/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"2000","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abde4b07f02db673efe","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Foose, M. The present \"national\" network of strong-motion instrumentation has evolved through the merger of several programs initiated by different agencies and organizations with objectives ranging from research to regulation. It is the result of the coordination of instrument maintenance and record archival currently provided by the Seismic Engineering Branch of the U.S. Geological Survey (formerly the Seismological Field Survey of the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey, or the National Ocean Survey, or the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). The USGS operates the program under funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) in cooperation with other federal, state, and local agencies.

NSF supports a data management function and the operation of a network of about 200 accelerographs and 300 seismoscopes utilized for studies of ground motion and building response. The State of California is developing its own strong-motion instrumentation program (CSMIP), which includes measurements of ground motion as well as the response of representative types of structures. The CSMIP network is the largest network operated by a single agency anywhere in the world. Eventually it will contain a total of about 1000 accelerographs. The Army Corps of Engineers (COE) is developing a program for monitoring the response of earth dams, which eventually will include as many as 400 instruments on over 100 dams. Other agencies and organizations are developing networks appropriate to their missions or objectives. At present the number of instruments owned by these other agencies is less than 100 in each case, although several agencies are still expanding their networks. The present distribution of accelerographs in the United States is indicated in Figure 1 (see: USGS, 1977, also).

In 1964 the cities of Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, California passed ordinances which required 3 accelerographs to be installed in all high-rise buildings. Initially, these instruments were installed and maintained as a part of the strong-motion program of the Seismological Field Survey (SFS). As the number of installations required by such codes increased, it became apparent that the maintenance of these instruments placed an inordinate burden on and created an imbalance in the SFS operated program (in 1972, 50 percent of the \"national\" program was concentrated in Los Angeles). With the transfer of the SFS program responsibility to the NSF and with the development of the CSMIP, the responsibility for maintenance of code required instruments has reverted to the city building officials and the building owners.

As the coordinated network of strong-motion instruments has grown, the maintenance of the instruments has required a larger staff than the USGS could provide under existing personnel ceilings. This situation has been resolved by the agencies with the larger networks performing their own installation and maintenance. The USGS maintains an archive of first class copies of all records, whereas other agencies maintain archives of their own records, only. In addition, the USGS coordinates the routine processing of all of the significant records, although other agencies will process their own data if they consider it to have a higher priority than does the USGS. In response to a recent change in their legislated charter, the CSMIP is beginning to develop a capability to process the data collected under that program.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S.
