Types of deposits are penecordant sandstone, quartz-pebble conglomerate, vein and vein-type, marine black shale, phosphate deposits, coaly carbonaceous rocks, and pegmatic and alaskitic rocks.\r\n\r\nThe economically most significant deposits of uranium known in 1975 are in quartz-pebble conglomerates and sandstones, which together represented about 75 percent of the world?s total production.\r\n\r\nThe largest deposits occur in quartz-pebble conglomerate at the Elliot Lake-Blind River area, Canada (average grade 0.12 percent U3O8), and at the Witwatersrand basin area in the Republic of South Africa (average grade 0.025 percent U3O8), where uranium is produced principally as a byproduct or coproduct of gold mining; and in medium-grained sandstones in the Colorado Plateau, USA (average grade 0.2 percent U3O8). Other economically significant concentrations are vein, pegmatite or contact metamorphic types, containing smaller but relatively high-grade tonnages and representing about 20 percent of the world?s total production. This report contains special water-resources data collected by the Geological Survey during 1977. These data include: streamflow at 11 selected stations, comparing the 1977 mean monthly and yearly flow to the period-of-record medians; base-flow measurements at 189 selected sites; water quality at 131 selected sites; ground-water levels in wells and river stages along a 158-mile reach of the Sacramento River; and, finally, graphs showing the effect of tidal action on suspended-sediment concentration at the stream-gaging station on the Sacramento River at Sacramento. The purpose was to acquire rock and coal samples to further evaluate the surface-minable coals of this area. In 1976 the Bureau of Land Management defined a portion of this area as an Energy Mineral Resource Inventory and Analysis Program reclamation study area and drilled an additional eight core holes.</p><p>During the course of the 1975 drilling methane (CH<sub>4</sub>) emissions were detected in all holes. The quantities ranged from very small amounts of methane (+0.1 percent) in the return drilling air to major flows estimated to be as much as 1,000,000 cubic feet per day.</p><p>Methane in the return drilling air or fluid is a serious safety hazard to personnel and equipment.
