These studies are being made in cooperation with the Texas Water Development Board, the Soil Conservation Service, the San Antonio River Authority, the city of Dallas, and the Tarrant County Control and Improvement District No. 1. The 12 study areas were chosen to sample watersheds having different rainfall, topography, geology, and soils. There are two programs. One is for plane strain motions, that is, motions in the plane perpendicular to the long axis of the structure, and the other is for antiplane strain motions, that is motions parallel to the axis. The seismic input is provided by specifying what the motion of the rock-soil boundary would be if the soil were absent and the boundary were a free surface. This may be done by supplying a magnetic tape containing the values of particle velocity for every boundary point at every instant of time. Alternatively, a punch card deck may be supplied giving acceleration values at every instant of time. In the plane strain program it is assumed that the acceleration values apply simultaneously to every point on the boundary; in the antiplane strain program it is assumed that the acceleration values characterize a plane shear wave propagating upward in the underlying elastic medium at a specified angle with the vertical. The nonlinear hysteretic behavior of the soil is represented by a three-dimensional rheological model. A boundary condition is used which takes account of finite rigidity in the elastic substratum. The computations are performed by an explicit finite-difference scheme that proceeds step by step in space and time. Computations are done in terms of stress departures from an unspecified initial state. Source listings are provided here along with instructions for preparing the input. A more detailed discussion of the method is presented elsewhere.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr78287","usgsCitation":"Joyner, W.B., 1978, FORTRAN programs for calculating nonlinear seismic ground response in two dimensions: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-287, 69 leaves :ill. ;28 cm.; (73 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78287.","productDescription":"69 leaves :ill. ;28 cm.; (73 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":379,"text":"Menlo Park Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":126475,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr_78_287.gif"},{"id":111002,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0287/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a06e4b07f02db5f88d6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Joyner, W. Graptolites collected from the Pen Argyl Member at Lehigh Gap indicate a lower Upper Ordovician (Edenian-Maysvillian) age for the Pen Argyl Member. The Pen Argyl Member in this area is located on the normal limb and in the brow of the large, recumbent Musconetcong nappe. It is a deep water flysch deposit emplaced by turbidity currents from a southeasterly source. Sedimentologic and structural evidence show that the Pen Argyl member overlies the sandy middle Ramseyburg Member, thus supporting the tripartite subdivision of the Martinsburg Formation. \r\n\r\nField and thin section study indicates that the penetrative slaty cleavage formed in an indurated rock probably by pressure solution and neocrystallization under lower greenschist facies metamorphism. Strain-slip cleavage formed as a result of a stress couple operating parallel to the slaty cleavage that transposed the slaty cleavage into a more spaced cleavage. Both cleavages are believed to have formed within the same stress continuum and in close succession. \r\n\r\nAnalysis of the folds in the Pen Argyl Member indicate six phases of major and minor folding. The earliest folding, F1, resulted in the development of the recumbent nappe. F2 folds can only be determined statistically; these axes plunge either northeast or southwest Asymmetric folds, F3, and associated F4 crenulations formed within the same stress continuum. F5 folds are large open folds and are exemplified by the Mosservi!le anticline. Kink folds, F6 and associated crenulations are fault related and were the last folds to form. Faults in the Pen Argyl Member range from small displacements along slaty cleavage to large reverse faults. The largest of these, the Eckville fault, is recognized throughout the three quadrangle area. It is a high angle reverse fault that separates the Shochary sequence from the Pen Argyl member to the north. \r\n\r\nDetailed fabric analysis of the Pen Argyl Member indicates that (1) the strike of the slaty cleavage is consistent throughout the study area, (2) bedding strikes are undulose indicating that the rocks were folded prior to slaty cleavage development, (3) slaty cleavage-bedding intersections indicate an early northeast-southwest fold set and a later east-west trend of fold axes, and (4) slaty cleavage-strain-slip cleavage intersections indicate two periods of strain-slip cleavage development, the later period being fault related. \r\n\r\nSynthesis of field work and fabric data suggest that the Pen Argyl Member was deposited in the waning stages of flysch deposition during the Taconic orogeny. The nappe, F1, was formed at this time as a result of stress generated by plate convergence to the southeast. Further Taconian deformation of the normal limb of the nappe resulted in the northeast-southwest plunging F2 folds. Initial Alleghenian deformation resulted in the F3 asymmetric folds and slaty cleavage, S1. Later in the same stress continuum the F4 crenulations and strain-slip cleavage, S2, formed. Subsequently, F5 open folding occurred. Kink folds and crenulations, F6, and strain-slip cleavage, S3, formed in conjunction with late Alleghenian reverse faults such as the Eckville fault.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr78391","usgsCitation":"Lash, G.G., 1978, The structure and stratigraphy of the Pen Argyl Member of the Martinsburg Formation in Lehigh and Berks counties, Pennsylvania: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-391, xi, 213 leaves :ill., maps ;28 cm.; (225 p., 7 sheets - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78391.","productDescription":"xi, 213 leaves :ill., maps ;28 cm.; (225 p., 7 sheets - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":153383,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0391/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":49252,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0391/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":49253,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0391/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":49254,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0391/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":49255,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0391/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":49256,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0391/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":49257,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0391/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":49258,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0391/plate-7.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":49259,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0391/plate-8.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":49260,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0391/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a60e4b07f02db634d69","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lash, Gary George","contributorId":45339,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lash","given":"Gary","email":"","middleInitial":"George","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":181504,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Locations for all samples are given in Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates. Brief descriptions of rock samples are also included. Rocks analysed are mostly sandstone. Samples of hematitic sandstone of the Rose Hill Formation and limonite-cemented sandstone of the Rocky Gap Sandstone contain high values of iron; these rocks are submarginal iron resources. Some of the same iron-rich samples have a little more barium, copper, cobalt, lead, silver, and/or zinc then is in average sandstone, but they do not suggest the presence of economic deposits of these metals. Generally, the type(s) of water in tributary streams in the south and southwest parts of the watershed was calcium bicarbonate and in other tributaries were calcium sulfate and magnesium sulfate. Dissolved-solids concentrations of discharge from top-spill reservoirs were lower and more consistent over a range of flows than concentrations from uncontrolled streams. Chemical characteristics of discharges from bottom-draw reservoirs differed from those of discharges from the other reservoirs. More than half the manganese concentrations equaled or exceeded 0.05 milligrams per liter, the maximum concentration recommended for domestic water supplies. Leaf fall in forested parts of the watershed are probably a source of this manganese. Nitrate (as nitrogen) concentration of streams ranged from 0.00 to 2.5 milligrams per liter; orthophosphate (as phosphorus), from 0.00 to 0.29 milligrams per liter, and total organic carbon, from 2.0 to 14 milligrams per liter.

Concentrations of fecal coliform bacteria and fecal streptococcal bacteria ranged from 5 to 65,000 colonies per 100 milliliters and from 5 to 24,000 colonies per 100 milliliters, respectively. Occasional human-waste contamination is indicated downstream from the towns of Borden and Speed. Data on periphyton, phytoplankton, and benthic communities collected during low flow in September 1975 indicate organic loading of Muddy Fork downstream from the town of Speed. Sand and gravel units of the unconsolidated deposits, which occur principally in valley bottoms, form the best aquifers and commonly provide well yields of several hundred gallons per minute. Carbonate aquifers are the most productive consolidated rock units. Ground water in the Hudson River basin is generally hard and may contain appreciable amounts of iron, salts in solution, or sulfur locally. Basic data on the availability of ground water in the Hudson River drainage area are compiled in (1) a hydrogeologic map of the drainage basin; (2) a table of well depths, yields, concentrations of selected chemical constituents, and hardness of ground water, listed by county and aquifer type; (3) a short text describing the occurrence of ground water in the basin; and (4) a bibliography of ground-water reports pertinent to the area studied. Locations for all samples are in Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates. Some of these iron-rich samples have a little more barium, copper, cobalt, lead, silver, and/or zinc than in average sandstone, but they do not suggest the presence of economic deposits of these metals. A few samples of Tuscarora Quartzite contain moderate amounts of manganese. These are from a submarginal manganese resource. No other obviously anomalous-values related to mineralized rock are present in the data.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr781077B","usgsCitation":"Mei, L., Fletcher, J., Rait, N., and Lesure, F., 1978, Analyses and descriptions of geochemical samples, Mountain Lake Wilderness Study Area, Virginia and West Virginia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-1077, 25 p. ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr781077B.","productDescription":"25 p. ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":146503,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/1077b/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39743,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/1077b/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad1e4b07f02db680f46","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mei, Leung","contributorId":40204,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mei","given":"Leung","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163863,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Fletcher, J.D.","contributorId":24928,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fletcher","given":"J.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163862,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Rait, Norma","contributorId":44128,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rait","given":"Norma","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163864,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Lesure, F. The data were collected to determine the feasibility of subsurface injection of storm runoff. An exploratory hole and five observation wells were constructed between October 1974 and April 1976. The lithology of the upper 185 feet at the test site is predominantly sand and marl. From 185 feet to 3,504 feet, limestone and dolomite predominate. Also , gypsum is present below 1.290 feet. Vertical intrinsic permeability, porosity, and compressibility of cores are reported. A 73-hour withdrawal test discharging 3,450 gallons per minute was run in the test injection well. At the site, chloride concentration in water from 192 to 340 feet, ranged from 150 to 680 milligrams per liter, and from 500 to 1,267 feet ranged from 16,000 to 20,000 milligrams per liter.
