To study in detail the relationship between geothermal areas and earthquakes, the U.S. Geological Survey has been monitoring seismicity in the Imperial Valley with a 16-station network since 1973. Six new stations were added to the network in November 1976. Automatic water-quality samplers, rain gages, and stream gages were installed in each basin. From September 1, 1975, to June 3, 1977, data were collected to determine rainfall intensities and define discharge hydrographs. Data from almost 650 samples show variation in concentration for about 20 parameters. This report contains data collected between May 1, 1976, and June 3, 1977. Average annual yield in the Big Eau Pleine River near Stratford is 32.tons per square mile, with an annual yield ranging from 1.0 to 64 tons per square mile. Fenwood Creek at Bradley and Freeman Creek at Halder, two smaller tributary basins, have average annual yields of 3.3 and 7.9 tons per square mile, respectively. Suspended-sediment concentrations in the basin ranged from 0 to 960 milligrams per liter, with a median concentration at the Stratford site of 13 milligrams per liter. Ninety percent of the material transported by the streams of the Big Eau Pleine basin is finer than sand and is made up of about equal percentages of silt and clay.</p>\n<p>A l3-year average of about 9,400 tons per year of suspended sediment is transported to the Big Eau Pleine Reservoir by streamflow and overland flow, whereas about 2,500 tons per year leaves the reservoir in its outflow. Considering only sediment inflow and outflow by streamflow and overland flow, and assuming the 2,500 tons per year is approximately the long-term average, the reservoir trap efficiency would be greater than 70 percent. These stations, mostly north of Fairbanks, add to the historical network of gaging stations and provide records of hydrologic conditions along the TAPS route. Selected data from 23 gaging stations along the TAPS route for the period 1970-74 (prior to construction of the pipeline) are compiled in graphic form. The data include annual hydrographs of daily mean or instantaneous values of a standard set of parameters which are indicative of physical, chemical and biological conditions of the streams. The hydrographs facilitate comparisons of data, both in time and between stream sites. Thus, they are a tool for evaluating streamflow characteristics along the TAPS route during the preconstruction period. Ground-water levels ranged from 0.4 foot above to 0.5 foot below average. The highest and lowest ground water for the year were both 1 foot below their long-term averages. In the Hialeah-Miami Springs area, water levels in wells near the centers of the heaviest pumping ranged from 8.0 to 9.5 feet below msl (mean sea level, 1929); and in the southwest well-field area, ground-water levels near the centers of pumping ranged from 2.0 feet above to 3.0 feet below msl. The combined average daily discharge from nine major streams and canals that flow eastward into tidal waters was 1,666 cubic feet per second (cfs), 609 cfs above the combined average daily flow for the 1975 water year. The combined average daily flow through the Tamiami Canal outlets was 783 cfs, 215 cfs above that of the 1975 water year. The 1976 position of the salt fron in the coastal part of the Biscayne aquifer was about the same as in 1975 except in the vicinity of Mowry Canal south of Homestead Air Force Base where the salt front had encroached farther inland.
