These shifts in climate could alter distributions of species across North America through changes in climate (i.e., temperature and precipitation), or through climate-induced changes on land cover. Our objective was to determine the relative impacts of land cover and climate on the abundance of five bird species in the Central United States that have habitat requirements ranging from grassland and shrubland to forest. We substituted space for time to examine potential impacts of a changing climate by assessing climate and land cover relationships over a broad latitudinal gradient. We found positive and negative relationships of climate and land cover factors with avian abundances. Habitat variables drove patterns of abundance in migratory and resident species, although climate was also influential in predicting abundance for some species occupying more open habitat (i.e., prairie warbler, blue-winged warbler, and northern bobwhite). Abundance of northern bobwhite increased with winter temperature and was the species exhibiting the most significant effect of climate. Models for birds primarily occupying early successional habitats performed better with a combination of habitat and climate variables whereas models of species found in contiguous forest performed best with land cover alone. These varied species-specific responses present unique challenges to land managers trying to balance species conservation over a variety of land covers. Management activities focused on increasing forest cover may play a role in mitigating effects of future climate by providing habitat refugia to species vulnerable to projected changes. Conservation efforts would be best served focusing on areas with high species abundances and an array of habitats. Future work managing forests for resilience and resistance to climate change could benefit species already susceptible to climate impacts.
","language":"English","publisher":"Ecological Society of America","doi":"10.1002/ecs2.1359","usgsCitation":"LeBrun, J.J., Thogmartin, W.E., Thompson, F.R., Dijak, W.D., and Millspaugh, J.J., 2016, Assessing the sensitivity of avian species abundance to land cover and climate: Ecosphere, v. 7, no. 6, e01359; 22 p., https://doi.org/10.1002/ecs2.1359.","productDescription":"e01359; 22 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","ipdsId":"IP-066593","costCenters":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470750,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1002/ecs2.1359","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":325239,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -98.26171875,\n 44.308126684886126\n ],\n [\n -98.3056640625,\n 39.90973623453719\n ],\n [\n -96.328125,\n 29.611670115197377\n ],\n [\n -91.7138671875,\n 30.524413269923986\n ],\n [\n -90.263671875,\n 34.994003757575776\n ],\n [\n -85.67138671875,\n 35.02999636902566\n ],\n [\n -83.16650390625,\n 38.685509760012\n ],\n [\n -81.67236328125,\n 41.590796851056005\n ],\n [\n -83.16650390625,\n 42.19596877629178\n ],\n [\n -87.8466796875,\n 42.52069952914966\n ],\n [\n -91.20849609375,\n 43.54854811091288\n ],\n [\n -92.74658203125,\n 44.762336674810996\n ],\n [\n -98.26171875,\n 44.308126684886126\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"7","issue":"6","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":6,"text":"Columbus PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-06-27","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5788a99be4b0d27deb3813c4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"LeBrun, Jaymi J.","contributorId":7959,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"LeBrun","given":"Jaymi","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":642466,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Thogmartin, Wayne E. 0000-0002-2384-4279 wthogmartin@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2384-4279","contributorId":2545,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thogmartin","given":"Wayne","email":"wthogmartin@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":642465,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Thompson, Frank R. After comparing the locations of spawning habitat for these species in the main basin of Lake Huron with surficial substrates and the hypothesized locations of fast-flowing Late Wisconsinan paleo-ice streams, we hypothesize that much of the spawning habitat for these species in Lake Huron is the result of deposition and erosion by paleo-ice streams. This hypothesis may represent a new framework for the identification and protection of spawning habitat for these native species, some of which are currently rare or extirpated in some of the Great Lakes. Nevertheless, observational gaps remain and thermal satellite imagery has proven useful in Hawai‘i for providing synoptic views of activity during intervals between field visits. Here we describe the beginning of a thermal remote sensing programme at the US Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO). Whereas expensive receiving stations have been traditionally required to achieve rapid downloading of satellite data, we exploit free, low-latency data sources on the internet for timely access to GOES, MODIS, ASTER and EO-1 ALI imagery. Automated scripts at the observatory download these data and provide a basic display of the images. Satellite data have been extremely useful for monitoring the ongoing lava flow activity on Kīlauea's East Rift Zone at Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō over the past few years. A recent lava flow, named Kahauale‘a 2, was upslope from residential subdivisions for over a year. Satellite data helped track the slow advance of the flow and contributed to hazard assessments. Ongoing improvement to thermal remote sensing at HVO incorporates automated hotspot detection, effusion rate estimation and lava flow forecasting, as has been done in Italy. These improvements should be useful for monitoring future activity on Mauna Loa.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of We infer that late Neogene deformation in the Chocolate Mountain Anticlinorium (CMA) created a barrier that blocked an estuary inlet, and that pre-existing and possibly active structures subsequently controlled the local course of the lower Colorado River. Structural patterns summarized below suggest that the CMA absorbed transpressional strain caused by left-stepping segments of dextral faults of the San Andreas fault system and/or the eastern California shear zone and Gulf of California shear zone. For this hypothesis to be correct, about 200-250 m of post-6 Ma, pre- ~5.3 Ma uplift along the CMA crest would be required to cut off a marine inlet. The 220-km-long CMA, cored by the early Paleogene Orocopia Schist subduction complex, extends from the Orocopia Mountains (Calif.) southeastward through the Chocolate Mountains (parallel to the southern San Andreas fault). Where Highway 78 crosses the Chocolate Mountains (Fig. 1), the CMA turns eastward through the Black Mountain-Picacho area (Calif.) and Trigo Mountains (Ariz.) into southwest Arizona. It separates southernmost Bouse Formation outcrops of the Blythe basin from subsurface Bouse outcrops to the south in the Yuma area. South of Blythe basin the CMA is transected by the lower Colorado River along a circuitous path.

Here we focus on the geology of an area between the central Chocolate Mountains and the Yuma Proving Grounds in Arizona. Specific landmarks include the southeast Chocolate Mountains, Midway Mountains, Peter Kane Mountain, Black Mountain, Picacho Peak, and Gavilan Hills. For simplicity, we refer to this as the eastern Chocolate Mountains.
","largerWorkType":{"id":24,"text":"Conference Paper"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings for the 2016 Desert Symposium","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":19,"text":"Conference Paper"},"conferenceTitle":"30th Annual Desert Symposium","conferenceDate":"April 15-16, 2016","conferenceLocation":"Zzyzx, CA","language":"English","usgsCitation":"Beard, S., Haxel, G.B., Dorsey, R.J., McDougall, K.A., and Jacobsen, C.E., 2016, Late Neogene deformation of the Chocolate Mountains Anticlinorium: Implications for deposition of the Bouse Formation and early evolution of the Lower Colorado River, in Proceedings for the 2016 Desert Symposium, Zzyzx, CA, April 15-16, 2016, p. 176-184.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"176","endPage":"184","ipdsId":"IP-074252","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":340155,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Mexico, United States","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -115.3333,\n              32.4\n            ],\n            [\n              -114,\n              32.4\n            ],\n            [\n              -114,\n              33.6666\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.3333,\n              33.6666\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.3333,\n              32.4\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":14,"text":"Menlo Park PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58ff0e9ce4b006455f2d61ba","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Beard, Sue 0000-0001-9552-1893 sbeard@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9552-1893","contributorId":167711,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Beard","given":"Sue","email":"sbeard@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":623227,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Haxel, Gordon B. gbhaxel@usgs.gov","contributorId":5666,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Haxel","given":"Gordon","email":"gbhaxel@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":623228,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Dorsey, Rebecca J.","contributorId":167712,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Dorsey","given":"Rebecca","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":24813,"text":"University of Oregan","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":692520,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"McDougall, Kristin A.","contributorId":69146,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McDougall","given":"Kristin","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":623230,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Jacobsen, Carl E.","contributorId":167713,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Jacobsen","given":"Carl","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":16171,"text":"West Chester University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":623231,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

After successful spawning, incubation, and hatching, sturgeon free embryos passively drift downstream and are sometimes captured by sampling crews. While spawning habitat has been identified at time of spawning through field investigations, captured pallid and shovelnose (used as a surrogate species) sturgeon free embryos in the Missouri River often do not come from genetically-known telemetered fish and may be useful to identify additional areas of spawning habitat. We developed a routing model to identify potential spawning locations for captured free embryos of known age based on channel velocity estimates. Conservation and restoration for long-term persistence of these fishes requires knowledge of their distributional patterns and life history requirements. Northern leatherside chub Lepidomeda copei (hereafter northern leatherside) is a cyprinid native to the Snake and Bear River Basins of Wyoming, Idaho, Nevada, and Utah, and it is believed to have declined in distribution relative to historical records. To address information gaps in the species' ecology and assess its status in the state, the objectives of this study were first to document the distribution (2010–2011) of northern leatherside in Wyoming and then to examine habitat factors related to the entire fish assemblage and to evaluate specific habitat associations of northern leatherside in the Bear River Basin, Wyoming. In the Bear River and Upper Snake River Basins, we documented the distribution of northern leatherside and compared it to the previously known distribution. Across the Bear River Basin, we used habitat measurements to assess abiotic features related to the distribution and abundance of northern leatherside. Northern leatherside was found across the Bear River Basin and was present in 2 streams each in the Upper Snake River and Green River Basins in Wyoming. Populations in Wyoming appear to represent the core of northern leatherside range, and our work provided a finer-scale delineation of the species' occurrence. Northern leatherside was collected from a variety of habitats, but multivariate analyses and occurrence modeling indicated it was associated with increased channel depth and depth variability, and positively associated with other native fishes (including mountain sucker Catostomus platyrhynchus, redside shiner Richardsonius balteatus, and speckled dace Rhinichthys osculus). These findings on the distribution and ecology of northern leatherside provide important new information to assist successful management and conservation efforts within Wyoming and across the species' range.
","language":"English","publisher":"Monte L. The small size of high Hawaiian Islands, plus their complex microlandscapes, require downscaling of global climate models to provide future projections of greater skill and spatial resolution. Two different climate modeling approaches (physics-based dynamical downscaling and statistics-based downscaling) have produced dissimilar projections. Because of these disparities, natural resource managers and decision makers have low confidence in using the modeling results and are therefore are unwilling to include climate-related projections in their decisions. In September 2015, the Pacific Islands Climate Science Center (PICSC), the Pacific Islands Climate Change Cooperative (PICCC), and the Pacific Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments (Pacific RISA) program convened a 2-day facilitated workshop in which the two modeling teams, plus key model users and resource managers, were brought together for a comparison of the two approaches, culminating with a discussion of how to provide predictions that are useable by resource managers. The proceedings, discussions, and outcomes of this Workshop are summarized in this Open-File Report.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr20161102","usgsCitation":"Helweg, D.A., Keener, V., and Burgett, J.M., 2016, Report from the workshop on climate downscaling and its application in high Hawaiian Islands, September 16–17, 2015: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2016–1102, 25 p., https://dx.doi.org/10.3133/ofr20161102.","productDescription":"Report: ix, 38 p. Range-testing a submerged passive acoustic receiver array in a Caribbean coral reef habitat","docAbstract":"
Submerged passive acoustic technology allows researchers to investigate spatial and temporal movement patterns of many marine and freshwater species. The technology uses receivers to detect and record acoustic transmissions emitted from tags attached to an individual. Acoustic signal strength naturally attenuates over distance, but numerous environmental variables also affect the probability a tag is detected. Knowledge of receiver range is crucial for designing acoustic arrays and analyzing telemetry data. Here, we present a method for testing a relatively large-scale receiver array in a dynamic Caribbean coastal environment intended for long-term monitoring of multiple species. The U.S. Geological Survey and several academic institutions in collaboration with resource management at Buck Island Reef National Monument (BIRNM), off the coast of St. Croix, recently deployed a 52 passive acoustic receiver array. We targeted 19 array-representative receivers for range-testing by submersing fixed delay interval range-testing tags at various distance intervals in each cardinal direction from a receiver for a minimum of an hour. Using a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM), we estimated the probability of detection across the array and assessed the effect of water depth, habitat, wind, temperature, and time of day on the probability of detection. The predicted probability of detection across the entire array at 100 m distance from a receiver was 58.2% (95% CI: 44.0–73.0%) and dropped to 26.0% (95% CI: 11.4–39.3%) 200 m from a receiver indicating a somewhat constrained effective detection range. Detection probability varied across habitat classes with the greatest effective detection range occurring in homogenous sand substrate and the smallest in high rugosity reef. Predicted probability of detection across BIRNM highlights potential gaps in coverage using the current array as well as limitations of passive acoustic technology within a complex coral reef environment.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1002/ece3.2228","usgsCitation":"Selby, T.H., Hart, K.M., Fujisaki, I., Smith, B.J., Pollock, C.J., Hillis-Star, Z.M., Lundgren, I., and Oli, M.K., 2016, Can you hear me now? The program was initiated in 1998 as part of the Clean Water Action Plan, a Presidential initiative to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Clean Water Act. Partnership projects are developed jointly by the USGS and the NPS. Studies are conducted by the USGS and findings are used by the NPS to guide policy and management actions aimed at protecting and improving water quality.

The National Park Service manages many of our Nation’s most highly valued aquatic systems across the country, including portions of the Great Lakes, ocean and coastal zones, historic canals, reservoirs, large rivers, high-elevation lakes and streams, geysers, springs, and wetlands. So far, the Water-Quality Partnership has undertaken 217 projects in 119 national parks. In each project, USGS studies and assessments (http://water.usgs.gov/nps_partnership/pubs.php) have supported science-based management by the NPS to protect and improve water quality in parks. Some of the current projects are highlighted in the NPS Call to Action Centennial initiative, Crystal Clear, which celebrates national park water-resource efforts to ensure clean water for the next century of park management (http://www.nature.nps.gov/water/crystalclear/).

New projects are proposed each year by USGS scientists working in collaboration with NPS staff in specific parks. Project selection is highly competitive, with an average of only eight new projects funded each year out of approximately 75 proposals that are submitted. Since the beginning of the Partnership in 1998, 189 publications detailing project findings have been completed. The 217 studies have been conducted in 119 NPS-administered lands, extending from Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska to Everglades National Park in Florida, and from Acadia National Park in the Northeast to park lands in Hawaii and Pacific Island territories in the West. Project goals range from periodic stream monitoring, to determining the occurrence and concentrations of contaminants and the potential for them to exceed human health or aquatic life criteria, to conducting interpretive studies to evaluate the effect(s) on or vulnerability of national park resources to visitor usage and other natural and anthropogenic activities.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/fs20163041","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the National Park Many aspects of our daily life are vulnerable to volcano hazards, including air travel, regional power generation and transmission infrastructure, interstate transportation, port facilities, communications infrastructure, and public health. The U.S. Geological Survey has the Federal responsibility to issue timely warnings of potential volcanic activity to the affected populace and civil authorities. The Volcano Hazards Program (VHP) is funded to carry out that mission and does so through a combination of volcano monitoring, short-term warnings, research on how volcanoes work, and community education and outreach.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, In 2016, the U.S. Geological Survey sampled 46 wells in the area to characterize the nature and extent of chromium in groundwater, to understand what proportion of total chromium is in the hexavalent state, and to determine if substantial differences are present between filtered and unfiltered chromium concentrations. Most sites were sampled in spring (May or June) and fall (September).
\n
The Colorado River at the Potash boat ramp site, just upstream of Canyonlands National Park, continued to show chronic contamination by caffeine, the pesticide 2,4-D, and prescription drugs (gabapentin, lamotrigine, metformin, and sulfamethoxazole). Samples at the Moab wastewater treatment plant effluent outflow pipe showed a high number and concentration of contaminants entering the river about 14 miles upstream of the long-term sampling location and are the nearest point source for contaminants of emerging concern. Samples from 400 m downstream of the effluent pipe in the Colorado River had decreased numbers and concentrations of contaminants, indicating relatively quick dilution by the river. However, some contaminants persisted at the long-term sampling site downstream.
\n
Patterns of detections at other sampling locations will be explored in future reports. Recent studies in Yellowstone have found that both the individual wolf and the collective pack rely on each other and play important roles in territoriality. At a time when most fairy tales and fables were portraying wolves as demonic killers or, at best, slapstick gluttons, Kipling seemed to have a respect or even reverence for the wolf. Wolves in The Jungle Book raise and mentor the main character Mowgli, with the pack's leader eventually dying to save the \"man-cub\" from a pack of wolves. Kipling may have extended intra- pack benevolence to a human boy for literary sake, but he was clearly enthralled with how pack members treat each other. As wolf packs are almost always family units, most commonly comprised of a breeding pair and their offspring from several years, amiable behavior within the pack is unsurprising. By contrast, wolf packs are fiercely intolerant of their neighbors, their rivals. And this competition is proving to be an important facet in the life of a wolf and its pack.
","language":"English","publisher":"Yellowstone Science","usgsCitation":"Cassidy, K.A., Smith, D.W., Mech, L.D., MacNulty, D.R., Stahler, D.R., and Metz, M.C., 2016, Territoriality and inter-pack aggression in gray wolves: shaping a social carnivore's life history: Yellowstone Science, v. 24, no. 1, p. 37-42.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"37","endPage":"42","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","ipdsId":"IP-069054","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":325167,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":325166,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://www.nps.gov/yell/learn/ys-24-1-territoriality-and-inter-pack-aggression-in-gray-wolves-shaping-a-social-carnivores-life-history.htm"}],"volume":"24","issue":"1","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":4,"text":"Rolla PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"57875829e4b0d27deb364f64","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cassidy, Kira A.","contributorId":145492,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Cassidy","given":"Kira","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":16134,"text":"Yellowstone Wolf Project, Yellowstone Ctr for Resources","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":642275,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Smith, Douglas W.","contributorId":95727,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"Douglas","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":642276,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Mech, L. A comprehensive understanding of conditions during the Piacenzian serves as both a conceptual model and a source for boundary conditions as well as means of verification of global climate model experiments. In this paper we present the PRISM4 reconstruction, a paleoenvironmental reconstruction of the mid-Piacenzian ( ∼ 3 Ma) containing data for paleogeography, land and sea ice, sea-surface temperature, vegetation, soils, and lakes. Our retrodicted paleogeography takes into account glacial isostatic adjustments and changes in dynamic topography. Soils and lakes, both significant as land surface features, are introduced to the PRISM reconstruction for the first time. Sea-surface temperature and vegetation reconstructions are unchanged but now have confidence assessments. We surveyed members of the American Fisheries Society to determine which job skills and knowledge of academic topics employers, students, and university faculty members deemed most important to early-career success of fisheries professionals. Respondents also rated proficiency of recently hired, entry-level professionals (employers) on how well their programs prepared them for career success (students and faculty) in those same job skills and academic topics. Critical thinking and written and oral communication skills topped the list of important skills and academic topics. Employers perceived recent entry-level hires to be less well-prepared to succeed in their careers than either university faculty or students. Entry-level hires with post-graduate degrees rated higher in proficiency for highly important skills and knowledge than those with bachelor's degrees. We conclude that although universities have the primary responsibility for developing critical thinking and basic communication skills of students, employers have equal or greater responsibility for enhancing skills of employees in teamwork, field techniques, and communicating with stakeholders. The American Fisheries Society can significantly contribute to the preparation of young fisheries professionals by providing opportunities for continuing education and networking with peers at professional conferences.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Fisheries Society","publisherLocation":"Bethesda, MD","doi":"10.1080/03632415.2016.1199218","usgsCitation":"McMullin, S.L., DiCenzo, V., Essig, R., Bonds, C., DeBruyne, R.L., Kaemingk, M.A., Mather, M.E., Myrick, C.A., Phelps, Q.E., Sutton, T.M., and Triplett, J., 2016, Are we preparing the next generation of fisheries professionals to succeed in their careers?: A survey of AFS members: Fisheries, v. 41, no. 8, p. 436-449, https://doi.org/10.1080/03632415.2016.1199218.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"436","endPage":"449","numberOfPages":"14","ipdsId":"IP-069045","costCenters":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":330599,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"41","issue":"8","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":8,"text":"Raleigh PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-08-02","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5819a9c3e4b0bb36a4c9101f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McMullin, Steve L.","contributorId":176514,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"McMullin","given":"Steve","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":652636,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"DiCenzo, Vic","contributorId":176515,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"DiCenzo","given":"Vic","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":652637,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Essig, Ron","contributorId":176516,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Essig","given":"Ron","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":652638,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Bonds, Craig","contributorId":176517,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Bonds","given":"Craig","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":652639,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"DeBruyne, Robin L. 0000-0002-9232-7937 rdebruyne@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9232-7937","contributorId":4936,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"DeBruyne","given":"Robin","email":"rdebruyne@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":652640,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Kaemingk, Mark A.","contributorId":40510,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kaemingk","given":"Mark","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":652641,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Mather, Martha E. 0000-0003-3027-0215 mather@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3027-0215","contributorId":2580,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mather","given":"Martha","email":"mather@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":652642,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7},{"text":"Myrick, Christopher A.","contributorId":78559,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Myrick","given":"Christopher","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":652643,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":8},{"text":"Phelps, Quinton E.","contributorId":173401,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Phelps","given":"Quinton","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":27224,"text":"Big Rivers and Wetlands Field Station, Missouri Department of Conservation, Jackson, MO","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":652644,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":9},{"text":"Sutton, Trent M.","contributorId":77893,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Sutton","given":"Trent","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":652645,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":10},{"text":"Triplett, James","contributorId":93565,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Triplett","given":"James","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":652646,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":11}]}}

Although this area is in general sparsely populated, (except for cities and towns along the Wasatch Front such as Ogden and Brigham City), it encompasses metamorphic core complexes in the Grouse Creek and Raft River Mountains (figure 1) of interest to earth scientists studying Cenozoic extension. The region was shaken in 1909 and 1934 by M6+ earthquakes east of the Hansel Mountains (Doser, 1989; Arabasz and others, 1994); damage from the 1934 earthquake occurred as far east as Logan, Utah (http:// www.seis.utah.edu/lqthreat/nehrp_htm/1934hans/n1934ha1. shtml#urbse). The presence of Quaternary shield volcanoes and bimodal Pleistocene volcanism in Curlew Valley (Miller and others, 1995; Felger and others, 2016) as well as relatively high temperature gradients encountered in the Indian Cove drillhole in the north arm of Great Salt Lake (Blackett and others, 2014) may indicate some potential for geothermal energy development in the area (Miller and others, 1995). The area also hosts four significant mining districts, in the northern Pilot Range, the Goose Creek Mountains in the northwest corner of the map, the southern end of the Promontory Mountains, and the southwest part of the Raft River Mountains, although production notably waned after World War II (Doelling, 1980). Other prospects of interest include those in the southern Grouse Creek Mountains, Silver Island, and the northern Newfoundland Mountains.

Large areas of northwest Utah are covered by young, surficial deposits or by Great Salt Lake or are down-dropped into deep Cenozoic basins, making extrapolation of bedrock geology from widely spaced exposures difficult or tenuous (figure 1). Local spatial variations in the Earth's magnetic field (evident as anomalies on aeromagnetic maps) reflect the distribution of magnetic minerals, primarily magnetite, in the underlying rocks. In many cases the volume content of magnetic minerals can be related to rock type, and abrupt spatial changes in the amount of magnetic minerals commonly mark lithologic or structural boundaries. Magnetic data reflect magnetization variations within the crust and are well suited for mapping the distribution of mafic igneous rocks, although felsic igneous rocks, some mineralized zones, and other rock types also can produce measurable magnetic anomalies. For these reasons, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Utah Geological Survey (UGS) contracted for the collection of aeromagnetic data in this area.
","language":"English","publisher":"Utah Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Salt Lake City, UT","doi":"10.34191/MP-16-4","isbn":"978-1-55791-931-1","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Langenheim, V., 2016, Aeromagnetic map of northwest Utah and adjacent parts of Nevada and Idaho: Utah Geological Survey Miscellaneous Publication 16-4, 13 p., https://doi.org/10.34191/MP-16-4.","productDescription":"13 p.","ipdsId":"IP-073411","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":342956,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho, Nevada, Utah","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -114.141667,\n              42.041667\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.916667,\n              42.041667\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.916667,\n              40.858333\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.141667,\n              40.858333\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.141667,\n              42.041667\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":14,"text":"Menlo Park PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"59536ea7e4b062508e3c7a75","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Langenheim, Victoria E. 0000-0003-2170-5213 zulanger@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2170-5213","contributorId":151042,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Langenheim","given":"Victoria E.","email":"zulanger@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":700845,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

We are tailoring this methodology to study the geothermal resource potential of the Snake River Plain and surrounding region. This project has contributed to the success of this approach by cataloging the critical elements controlling exploitable hydrothermal systems, establishing risk matrices that evaluate these elements in terms of both probability of success and level of knowledge, and building automated tools to process results. ArcGIS was used to compile a range of different data types, which we refer to as ‘elements’ (e.g., faults, vents, heatflow…), with distinct characteristics and confidence values.

Raw data for each element were transformed into data layers with a common format. Because different data types have different uncertainties, each evidence layer had an accompanying confidence layer, which reflects spatial variations in these uncertainties. Risk maps represent the product of evidence and confidence layers, and are the basic building blocks used to construct Common Risk Segment (CRS) maps for heat, permeability, and seal. CRS maps quantify the variable risk associated with each of these critical components. In a final step, the three CRS maps were combined into a Composite Common Risk Segment (CCRS) map for analysis that reveals favorable areas for geothermal exploration.

Python scripts were developed to automate data processing and to enhance the flexibility of the data analysis. Python scripting provided the structure that makes a custom workflow possible. Nearly every tool available in the ArcGIS ArcToolbox can be executed using commands in the Python programming language. This enabled the construction of a group of tools that could automate most of the processing for the project. Currently, our tools are repeatable, scalable, modifiable, and transferrable, allowing us to automate the task of data analysis and the production of CRS and CCRS maps. Our ultimate goal is to produce a toolkit that can be imported into ArcGIS and applied to any geothermal play type, with fully tunable parameters that will allow for the production of multiple versions of the CRS and CCRS maps in order to better test for sensitivity and to validate results.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings, 41st Workshop on
