In September 1977, three exploratory test holes were drilled 5 km east of Picacho and across the Picacho fault to investigate subsurface conditions and the mechanism of the faulting. The holes were logged by conventional geophysical and geologic methods. Piezometers were set in each hole and have been monitored since September 1977. The drilling indicates that the unconsolidated alluvium beneath the surface fault is approximately 310 m thick. Drilling and piezometer data and an associated seismic refraction survey indicate that the modern faulting is coincident with a preexisting, high-angle, normal fault that offsets units within the alluvium as well as the underlying bedrock. Piezometer and neutron log data indicate that the preexisting fault behaves as a partial ground-water barrier. Monitoring of the piezometers indicates that the magnitude of the man-induced difference in water level across the preexisting fault is seasonal in nature, essentially disappearing during periods of water-level recovery. The magnitude of the seasonal difference in water level, however, appears to be sufficient to account for the modern fault offset by localized differential compaction caused by a difference in water level across the preexisting fault. The guidelines include requirements for surface slopes of less than 5 percent, 61 m of alluvium beneath the site, an area free of active erosion or deposition, lack of faults, a minimum area of 5 km2, no potential for flooding, and as many logistical support facilities as possible.</p><p>The geology of the Jackass Flats area is similar to the rest of the Nevada Test Site in topographic relief (305-1,200 m), stratigraphy (complexly folded and faulted Paleozoic sediments overlain by Tertiary ash-flow tuffs and lavas overlain in turn by younger alluvium), and structure (Paleozoic thrust faults and folds, strike-slip faults, proximity to volcanic centers, and Basin and Range normal faults). Of the stratigraphic units at the potential Spent Unreprocessed Fuel Facility site in Jackass Flats, only the thickness and stability of the alluvium are of immediate importance. Basin and Range faults and a possible extension of the Mine Mountain fault need further investigation.</p><p>The combination of a slope map and a simplified geologic and physiographic map into one map shows several potential sites for a Spent Unreprocessed Fuel Facility in Jackass Flats. The potential areas have slopes of less than 5 percent and contain only desert pavement or segmented desert pavement--the two physiographic categories having the greatest geomorphic and hydraulic stability.</p><p>Before further work can be done, specific criteria for a Spent Unreprocessed Fuel Facility site must be defined. These shales are composed predominately of 2M illite and illitic mixed-layer clay with minor amounts of chlorite and kaolinite. Preliminary data indicate that kaolinite, the only allogenic clay mineral, is present in successively older beds of the Ohio Shale from south to north in the southern and middle parts of the Appalachian basin. This trend in the distribution of kaolinite shows a paleocurrent direction to the southwest. Three well-known methods of preparing the clay fraction for X-ray diffraction analysis were tested and evaluated. Kaolinite was not identified in two of the methods because of layering due to differing settling rates of the clay minerals. Fanno Creek basin in Portland has the longest period of rainfall-runoff record, starting in 1973; Tryon Creek basin in Portland is next with a record starting in 1974. Records in all other basins began in 1975. Analysis of samples collected at six sites showed that most of the concentrations found are in the range to be expected of drainage from an intensely farmed watershed. Dissolved-oxygen values range from low to medium. Arsenic was found in quarterly samples of water and bottom materials at all sites. Coastal Plain, South Carolina and Georgia, and examines their potential for deep-well waste storage. For mapping purposes a waste-storage \"operational unit\" is established and defined. It is a sand or sandstone layer, 20 feet or more in thickness, that is immediately overlain and underlain by a layer of shale or clay, 20 feet or more in thickness, and which occurs in regional chronostratigraphic units (Units A, B, C, D, E, F, G(?), and H(?)) of Mesozoic age in areas where each of these units contains nonusable ground water. Nonusable ground water is defined as water that contains sodium chloride in excess of 10,000 mg/L.</p><p>Using a group of geohydrologic parameters derived from or combining 21 categories of basic data, established from study and interpretation of well cuttings and geophysical logs, a series of 32 regional maps and 8 stratigraphic cross sections was constructed. All experiments were conducted during the 1973 and 1974 test seasons. Tables of measured ground-surface elevations, water-surface elevations, and point velocities are included for all experiments. Bed roughness data in the form of grass heights and densities are tabulated. A total of 19 steady flow experiments and 7 unsteady flow experiments for varying grass heights are included. For the steady flow experiments, an average set of water-surface elevations and point velocity measurements are tabulated.&nbsp;</p><p>Inflow discharge hydrographs are tabulated for the unsteady flow experiments. The tabulated point velocities and water-surface elevations for the unsteady flow experiments were selected to represent the general changes in the flow variables as the flood wave passed through the facility but do not include all collected data. This index of flow was computed from streamflow records for 31 stream sites in Puerto Rico. In addition, there was a need for the 7-day, 10-year minimum flow at an additional 15 stream sites for which adequate streamflow data were not available. The flow index was estimated at these sites on the basis of available record, records at nearby sites, and comparisons with drainage areas.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
