S. Geological Survey","docAbstract":"During the period 1918 to 1973 the U.S. Geological Survey, Water Resources Division, established 22 District-type water quality laboratories. These facilities provided the analytical capability and water-quality information for hydrologic investigations and the national baseline inventory of chemical, physical, fluvial sediment, and biological characteristics of surface and ground waters in the United States. Prior to 1950, most methods used in the laboratory were gravimetric, colorimetric, or titrimetric. Flame photometric equipment was common to most laboratories in the 1950's, and the atomic absorption spectrophotometer was added to larger laboratories in the 1960's. In the late 1960's, the first of the automatic analyzers was installed. Total annual production averaged about 480 adjusted complete analyses during the early years 1919-28, about 7,800 in 1946, and about 50,000 in 1970. Budget estimates for the majority of laboratories ranged from $25,000 to $50,000 (1940-50) and $75,000 to $300,000 (1965-73). Beginning in 1972, major functions of the 22 laboratories have been combined into two comprehensive highly-automated facilities located at Denver (Arvada), Colo., and Atlanta (Doraville), Ga. These laboratories comprise the Central Laboratory System for the U.S. Geological Survey. These summaries of references are designed to aid in library research on metallic and nonmetallic (other than mineral fuels and construction materials) mineral occurrences in the Mt. Fairweather and Skagway quadrangles, Alaska. All references to reports of the Geological Survey, to most reports of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, and to most reports of the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor State and Territorial agencies released before November 1, 1977, are summarized. Certain, mainly statistical, reports such as the annual Minerals Yearbook of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the biennial and annual reports of the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor State and Territorial agencies are not included. One report published in a scientific journal is included.

This report is divided into three parts: a section made up of summaries of references arranged alphabetically first by quadrangle and second by occurrence name; a section that lists synonyms for names in the first section, claim names, and the names of operators and owners of mines and prospects; and a section that lists, by author, all references summarized in the first section.

Analyses of the surface effects of past underground coal mining in the western Powder River Basin suggest that underground mining of strippable coal deposits will damage the environment more over long periods of time than will modern surface mining, provided proper restoration procedures are followed after surface mining. Subsidence depressions and pits are a continuing hazard to the environment and to man's activities 5-20 km north of Sheridan, Wyo., above mines that were abandoned 25-80 years ago where the overburden is weak and is less than about 60 m thick. In addition, fires commonly start by spontaneous combustion when water and air enter the abandoned mine workings via subsidence cracks and pits. The fires can then spread to unmined coal as they create more cavities, more subsidence, and more cracks and pits through which air can circulate.

In modern surface mining operations the total land surface underlain by minable coal is removed to expose the coal. The coal is removed, the overburden and topsoil are replaced, and the land regraded and revegetated. The land, although disturbed, can be more easily restored and put back into use than land underlain by abandoned underground mine workings in areas where the overburden is less than about 60 m thick. The resource recovery of modern surface mining also is much greater than that of underground mining procedures.

Although present-day underground mining technology is advanced as compared to that of 25-80 years ago, subsidence resulting from mining of thick coal beds beneath overburden less than about 60 m thick by underground methods can cause greater damage to surface drainage, ground water, and vegetation than can properly designed surface mining operations. This report briefly discusses the geology and surface and underground effects of former large-scale underground mining in a 50 km2 area north of Sheridan, Wyo. and describes some environmental consequences and problems caused by mining.

Percolation of contaminants from the controlled land application of domestic anaerobic digested liquid sludge has affected the quality of ground water in the highly permeable unconfined Miocene Cohansey Sand aquifer at Colliers Mills and Webbs Mill areas of the Pine Barrens region in Ocean County, New Jersey.

The sludge, containing five percent solids, was applied to three soil types, the Downer, Lakewood, and Woodmansie series, at rates of 10, 20, and 40 tons per acre (22.4, 44.8, and 89.6 metric tons per hectare) per year for the growing seasons 1973-75. Contaminant concentration reached a peak at the water table in a cyclic pattern in response to peak recharge from precipitation during the cool months from November to April. The nature and occurrence of the contaminated ground water, which is moving at estimated rates of 1.1 to 1.6 feet (0.33 to 0.48 m) per day at Colliers Mills and 0.62 to 0.69 feet (0.19 to 0.21 m) per day at Webbs Mill, has been identified by comparing changes in concentration and distribution, above background levels, of specific conductance, nitrate-nitrogen, and chloride.

Contamination of ground water has occurred under all plots receiving sludge application and the degree of contamination is generally directly related to the application rates. At the 40 ton per acre per year (89.6 metric ton per hectare per year) application rate the nitrate-nitrogen concentration increased from a background level of 2.4 milligrams per liter to a peak of 93.3 milligrams per liter at the Downer soil site, from 2.0 milligrams per liter to a peak of 98 milligrams per liter at the Lakewood soil site, and from 5.0 milligrams per liter to a peak of 54 milligrams per liter at the Woodmansie soil site. At the minimum application rate of 10 ton per acre per year (22.4 metric ton per hectare per year) the nitrate-nitrogen concentration increased from a background level of 2.4 milligrams per liter to 11.6 milligrams per liter at the Downer soil site, from 2.0 milligrams per liter to 10 milligrams per liter at the Lakewood soil sites and from 5.0 milligrams per liter to 38 milligrams per liter at the Woodmansie soil site.

Under continuous sludge application at these soil sites, the contaminant concentration in ground water is expected to increase in relative proportion to loading rates. Contamination will also continue after the cessation of sludge application as long as the residual layer contains excess quantities of soluble sludge constituents.

In addition, three local surveys were made that helped to fill in gaps in the gravity coverage. The resulting complete Bouguer gravity anomaly map and first- and third-order polynomial maps exhibit anomalies of great lateral extent and amplitudes that exceed 45 mGals. \r\n\r\nFive generalized geologic cross sections were constructed and analyzed by the two-dimensional method to investigate the thickness of the valley fill in Tularosa Valley and Jornada Del Muerto. Lineaments and alignments","docAbstract":"The first stages of a remote-sensing project on the Paradox basin, part of the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) radioactive waste-emplacement program, consisted of a review and selection of the best available satellite scanner images to use in geomorphologic and tectonic investigations of the region. High-quality Landsat images in several spectral bands (E-2260-17124 and E-5165-17030), taken under low sun angle October 9 and 10, 1975, were processed via computer for planimetric rectification, histogram analysis, linear transformation of radiance values, and edge enhancement. A lineament map of the northern Paradox basin was subsequently compiled at 1:400,000 using the enhanced Landsat base. Numerous previously unmapped northeast-trending lineaments between the Green River and Yellowcat dome; confirmatory detail on the structural control of major segments of the Colorado, Gunnison, and Dolores Rivers; and new evidence for late Phanerozoic reactivation of Precambrian basement structures are among the new contributions to the tectonics of the region. Lineament trends appear to be compatible with the postulated Colorado lineament zone, with geophysical potential-field anomalies, and with a northeast-trending basement fault pattern. Combined Landsat, geologic, and geophysical field evidence for this interpretation includes the sinuousity of the composite Salt Valley anticline, the transection of the Moab-Spanish Valley anticline on its southeastern end by northeast-striking faults, and possible transection (?) of the Moab diapir. Similarly, northeast-trending lineaments in Cottonwood Canyon and elsewhere are interpreted as manifestations of structures associated with northeasterly trends in the magnetic and gravity fields of the La Sal Mountains region. Other long northwesterly lineaments near the western termination of the Ryan Creek fault zone. may be associated with the fault zone separating the Uncompahgre horst uplift from the Paradox basin. \r\n\r\nImplications of the present investigation for a potential radioactive waste-emplacement site in Salt Valley include confirmation of lack of permanent surface drainage and absence of agricultural or other development in the area of northern Salt Valley. On the other hand, the existence of diapirism, salt-karst landforms, and extensive lineamentation of the northern Paradox basin suggest regional tectonic instability at least in the geologic past. Future reactivation of diapiric or other halokinetic processes, including lateral flow, would lead to plastic behavior of the halite that might cause emplaced waste containers to migrate within the diapir. At Salt Valley, existing diapiric boundary faults and intersecting joint sets in sandstone units on the anticlinal flanks could, if the hydraulic gradient is suitable, provide conduits to the halite core for circulating ground water from adjacent Mesozoic sandstones in synclinal areas between the salt diapirs. Moreover, the loci of major lineament intersections might be areas of somewhat elevated seismic risk. The Oak Grove core was taken as part of a multifaceted project to develop a stratigraphic and tectonic framework for the Rappahannock drainage basin, northeastern Virginia. This core is at present the only continuously cored Cretaceous and Tertiary section on the Northern Neck of Virginia and is one of the few deep cores in the entire Salisbury embayment. The core includes most of the Chesapeake Group sediments (Miocene part) in the Oak Grove area, the Pamunkey Group (Paleocene and Eocene) and nearly all of the Potomac Group (Lower Cretaceous part) (see Table 1).

Uranium in the central mining area of Marysvale, Utah occurs in hydrothermal veins cutting granitic and volcanic rocks in the eastern source area of the Mount Belknap Volcanics. A preliminary model for the origin of the veins envisages deposition in near-surface fractures above an unexposed pluton that may host a porphyry-type ore deposit. This model is based on the work in progress by the U.S. Geological Survey, and embodies all presently available data from field mapping, literature study, fluid inclusion studies, and diverse geochemical and isotopic studies. Recent advances in uranium geochemistry have been particularly helpful. The work is not yet complete so this model should be considered as a progress report suggesting possible targets for exploration and testing; such testing would in turn lead to refinements in the model and to a clearer understanding of vein-type uranium deposits in general.

Photon lines have been selected on the basis of their importance in borehole logging by nuclear methods. The mode of production of each photopeak and the half lives of natural and artificial radionuclides are given, but intensity information is omitted.

Generally, concentrations of constituents were within the range expected in an uncontaminated environment in south Florida. However, concentrations did exceed south Florida background levels or Environmental Protection Agency criteria in a few cases. Two trace elements--chromium (20 micrograms per liter) in ponded surface water and lead (500 micrograms per gram) in bottom sediment--exceeded background levels. Concentrations of dieldrin (22 micrograms per kilogram) and polychlorinated biphenyls (53 micrograms per kilogram) also exceed background levels in bottom sediment. The concentration of phenol (23 micrograms per liter) in ground water exceeded Environmental Protection Agency quality criteria by 22 micrograms per liter, but was within the background range for south Florida. Ten metals were detected in the cattail or algal samples, but only iron, manganese, and zinc were in higher concentrations than those in the bottom sediment. The area of the drainage basin is 41 acres of which 61 percent is pervious sod lawns and 39 percent is impervious roofs, driveways and streets. The land surface is nearly flat with a gentle, eastward slope. Storm runoff flows eastward along grass swales into a sewer collection system on the eastern boundary of the area that in turn joins a 36-inch diameter storm drain. Runoff loads of 12 or more water-quality constituents were computed for 32 storms between April 1974 and September 1975. Chemical analyses of rainfall for 3 storms are included. Hydrothermally altered rocks in a part of the areas of mineralized rock associated with the Platoro caldera are matched against the model, to locate and to characterize latent mineral deposits for optimal prospecting and exploration.
