However, direct observational studies of climate change impacts on North American inland fishes are rare. In this synthesis, we (1) summarize climate trends that may influence North American inland fish populations and assemblages, (2) compile 31 peer-reviewed studies of documented climate change effects on North American inland fish populations and assemblages, and (3) highlight four case studies representing a variety of observed responses ranging from warmwater systems in the southwestern and southeastern United States to coldwater systems along the Pacific Coast and Canadian Shield. We conclude by identifying key data gaps and research needs to inform adaptive, ecosystem-based approaches to managing North American inland fishes and fisheries in a changing climate.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","publisherLocation":"Abingdon, England","doi":"10.1080/03632415.2016.1186016","usgsCitation":"Lynch, A.J., Myers, B., Chu, C., Eby, L.A., Falke, J.A., Kovach, R.P., Krabbenhoft, T.J., Kwak, T.J., Lyons, J., Paukert, C.P., and Whitney, J.E., 2016, Climate change effects on North American inland fish populations and assemblages: Fisheries, v. 41, no. 7, p. 346-361, https://doi.org/10.1080/03632415.2016.1186016.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"346","endPage":"361","ipdsId":"IP-069905","costCenters":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":330627,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"41","issue":"7","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":9,"text":"Reston PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-06-29","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5819a9c3e4b0bb36a4c91021","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lynch, Abigail J. 0000-0001-8449-8392 ajlynch@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8449-8392","contributorId":5645,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lynch","given":"Abigail","email":"ajlynch@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":411,"text":"National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":652561,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Myers, Bonnie 0000-0002-3170-2633 bjmyers@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3170-2633","contributorId":176495,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Myers","given":"Bonnie","email":"bjmyers@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":411,"text":"National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":652562,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Chu, Cindy","contributorId":176496,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Chu","given":"Cindy","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":652563,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Eby, Lisa A.","contributorId":42910,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Eby","given":"Lisa","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":652564,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Falke, Jeffrey A. 0000-0002-6670-8250 jfalke@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6670-8250","contributorId":5195,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Falke","given":"Jeffrey","email":"jfalke@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":652565,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Kovach, Ryan P. rkovach@usgs.gov","contributorId":5772,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kovach","given":"Ryan","email":"rkovach@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":481,"text":"Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":652566,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Krabbenhoft, Trevor J.","contributorId":176498,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Krabbenhoft","given":"Trevor","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":652567,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7},{"text":"Kwak, Thomas J. 0000-0002-0616-137X tkwak@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0616-137X","contributorId":834,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kwak","given":"Thomas","email":"tkwak@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":652569,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":8},{"text":"Lyons, John","contributorId":176499,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Lyons","given":"John","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":7242,"text":"Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Madison, WI, USA","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":652568,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":9},{"text":"Paukert, Craig P. 0000-0002-9369-8545 cpaukert@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9369-8545","contributorId":879,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Paukert","given":"Craig","email":"cpaukert@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":652560,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":10},{"text":"Whitney, James E.","contributorId":176500,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Whitney","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":652570,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":11}]}}

We demonstrate the imperative of framing clearly-defined management objectives in finding optimal control actions for control of disease outbreaks. We illustrate an analysis that can be applied rapidly at the start of an outbreak when there are multiple stakeholders involved with potentially multiple objectives, and when there are also multiple disease models upon which to compare control actions. The output of our analysis frames subsequent discourse between policy-makers, modellers and other stakeholders, by highlighting areas of discord among different management objectives and also among different models used in the analysis. We illustrate this approach in the context of a hypothetical foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak in Cumbria, UK using outputs from five rigorously-studied simulation models of FMD spread. We present both relative rankings and relative performance of controls within each model and across a range of objectives. Results illustrate how control actions change across both the base metric used to measure management success and across the statistic used to rank control actions according to said metric. In northern Monterey Bay, California, USA, as much as 30% of the seafloor is buried or exposed seasonally, making this an ideal location to test how subtidal temperate rocky reef communities vary in the presence and absence of chronic sediment-based disturbances. Designated dynamic plots were naturally inundated by sediment in summer (50 to 100% cover) and swept clean in winter, whereas designated stable plots remained free of sediment during our study. Multivariate analyses indicated significant differences in the structure of sessile and mobile communities between dynamic and stable reef habitats. For sessile species, community structure in disturbed plots was less variable in space and time than in stable plots due to the maintenance of an early successional state. In contrast, community structure of mobile species varied more in disturbed plots than in stable plots, reflecting how mobile species distribute in response to sediment dynamics. Some species were found only in these disturbed areas, suggesting that the spatial mosaic of disturbance could increase regional diversity. We discuss how the relative ability of species to tolerate disturbance at different life history stages and their ability to colonize habitat translate into community-level differences among habitats, and how this response varies between mobile and sessile communities.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Inter-Research","doi":"10.3354/meps11763","usgsCitation":"Figurski, J.D., Freiwald, J., Lonhart, S.I., and Storlazzi, C.D., 2016, Seasonal sediment dynamics shape temperate bedrock reef communities: Marine Ecology Progress Series, v. 552, p. 19-29, https://doi.org/10.3354/meps11763.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"19","endPage":"29","ipdsId":"IP-059376","costCenters":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470781,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.3354/meps11763","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":329252,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Monterey Bay","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.08136558532713,\n              36.94316941700314\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.08136558532713,\n              36.962923262794064\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.02119827270508,\n              36.962923262794064\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.02119827270508,\n              36.94316941700314\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.08136558532713,\n              36.94316941700314\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"552","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":14,"text":"Menlo Park PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"57f7c6a8e4b0bc0bec09caa9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Figurski, Jared D.","contributorId":16307,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Figurski","given":"Jared","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":643860,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Freiwald, Jan","contributorId":15505,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Freiwald","given":"Jan","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":643861,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Lonhart, Steve I.","contributorId":104381,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lonhart","given":"Steve","email":"","middleInitial":"I.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":643862,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Storlazzi, Curt D. 0000-0001-8057-4490 cstorlazzi@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8057-4490","contributorId":140584,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Storlazzi","given":"Curt","email":"cstorlazzi@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":643859,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

The rift complex is situated beneath Mesozoic to Cenozoic strata of the Mississippi embayment of southeastern Missouri, northeastern Arkansas, and western Tennessee and Kentucky. The rift portion of the stratigraphic section consists primarily of synrift Cambrian and Ordovician strata, capped by a postrift sag succession of Late Ordovician to Cenozoic age. Potential synrift source rocks have been identified in the Cambrian Elvins Shale. Thermal maturity of Paleozoic strata within the rift ranges from the oil window to the dry gas window. Petroleum generation in Elvins source rocks likely occurred during the middle to late Paleozoic. Upper Cretaceous sedimentary rocks unconformably overlie various Paleozoic units and define the likely upper boundary of the petroleum system.</p>\n<p id=\"p-28\">No production has been established in the Reel-foot rift. However, at least nine of 22 exploratory wells have reported petroleum shows, mainly gas shows with some asphalt or solid hydrocarbon residue. Regional seismic profiling shows the presence of two large inversion structures (Blytheville arch and Pascola arch). The Blytheville arch is marked by a core of structurally thickened Elvins Shale, whereas the Pascola arch reflects the structural uplift of a portion of the entire rift basin. Structural uplift and faulting within the Reelfoot rift since the late Paleozoic appear to have disrupted older conventional hydrocarbon traps and likely spilled any potential conventional petroleum accumulations. The remaining potential resources within the Reelfoot rift are likely shale gas accumulations within the Elvins Shale; however, reservoir continuity and porosity as well as pervasive faulting appear to be significant future challenges for explorers and drillers.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"GCSSEPM Foundation","doi":"10.5724/gcs.15.34.0345","usgsCitation":"Coleman, J.L., and Pratt, T.L., 2016, Examination of the Reelfoot Rift Petroleum System, south-central United States, and the elements that remain for potential exploration and development: GCSSEPM Foundation Perkins-Rosen Research Conference Proceedings, v. 34, p. 345-371, https://doi.org/10.5724/gcs.15.34.0345.","productDescription":"27 p.","startPage":"345","endPage":"371","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","ipdsId":"IP-067310","costCenters":[{"id":241,"text":"Eastern Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":324921,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"34","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":9,"text":"Reston PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5780ceb6e4b0811616822324","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Coleman, James L. jlcoleman@usgs.gov","contributorId":141060,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Coleman","given":"James","email":"jlcoleman@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":241,"text":"Eastern Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":566897,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Pratt, Thomas L. 0000-0003-3131-3141 tpratt@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3131-3141","contributorId":3279,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pratt","given":"Thomas","email":"tpratt@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":300,"text":"Geologic Hazards Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":566898,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

However, long-term monitoring of high-elevation populations is uncommon relative to those occurring at lower elevations, and evidence supporting this assumption is limited. We analyzed 45 years of reproductive data for two Colorado populations of white-tailed ptarmigan (</span><i>Lagopus leucura</i><span>), an alpine-endemic species with restricted distribution in western North America. Seasonal temperatures measured by the number of growing degree days warmed significantly at our study sites for pre-nesting, nesting, and brood-rearing seasonal periods (mean advance of 8 growing degree days per decade), and both populations advanced their reproductive phenology over the study period based on median hatch dates (median advance of 3.7 and 1.9 days per decade for the northern and southern sites, respectively). Reproductive performance measured by the number of chicks per hen declined significantly at one study site but not the other, and differences between sites may have been due to habitat degradation at one study area. Annual variability in chicks per hen was large at both sites but only weakly related to seasonal weather. An index of precipitation and temperature during the brood-rearing period was the best predictor for reproductive success with warm and dry conditions relating positively to number of chicks per hen. Our results provide evidence for two alpine ptarmigan populations that are remarkably invariant to fluctuations in seasonal weather with respect to reproductive success as measured by number of chicks per hen in the breeding population. These results are surprising given the general perception of alpine animal populations as being highly sensitive to warming temperatures.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"PLOS","doi":"10.1371/journal.pone.0158913","usgsCitation":"Wann, G.T., Aldridge, C.L., and Braun, C.E., 2016, Effects of seasonal weather on breeding phenology and reproductive success of alpine ptarmigan in Colorado: PLoS ONE, v. 11, no. 7, p. 1-16, https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0158913.","productDescription":"e0158913; 16 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"16","ipdsId":"IP-066508","costCenters":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470799,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0158913","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":346754,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","volume":"11","issue":"7","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":2,"text":"Denver PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-07-15","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"59e71693e4b05fe04cd331b6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wann, Gregory T. 0000-0001-9076-7819 wanng@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9076-7819","contributorId":3855,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wann","given":"Gregory","email":"wanng@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":713046,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Aldridge, Cameron L. 0000-0003-3926-6941 aldridgec@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3926-6941","contributorId":191773,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Aldridge","given":"Cameron","email":"aldridgec@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":713047,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Braun, Clait E.","contributorId":59368,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Braun","given":"Clait","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":713048,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

To index such high-quality forage, recent work proposed the instantaneous rate of green-up (IRG), i.e. rate of change in the normalized difference vegetation index over time. Despite this important advancement, no study has tested the assumption that herbivores select habitat patches at peak IRG. We evaluated this assumption using step selection functions parametrized with movement data during the green-up period from two populations each of bighorn sheep, mule deer, elk, moose and bison, totalling 463 individuals monitored 1–3 years from 2004 to 2014. Accounting for variables that typically influence habitat selection for each species, we found seven of 10 populations selected patches exhibiting high IRG—supporting the GWH. Nonetheless, large herbivores selected for the leading edge, trailing edge and crest of the IRG wave, indicating that other mechanisms (e.g. ruminant physiology) or measurement error inherent with satellite data affect selection for IRG. Our evaluation indicates that IRG is a useful tool for linking herbivore movement with plant phenology, paving the way for significant advancements in understanding how animals track resource quality that varies both spatially and temporally.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"The Royal Society Publishing","doi":"10.1098/rspb.2016.0456","usgsCitation":"Merkle, J., Monteith, K.L., Aikens, E.O., Hayes, M.M., Hersey, K., Middleton, A., Oates, B., Sawyer, H., Scurlock, B., and Kauffman, M., 2016, Large herbivores surf waves of green-up during spring: Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, v. 283, no. 1833, p. 1-8, https://doi.org/10.1098/rspb.2016.0456.","productDescription":"Article 20160456; 8 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"8","ipdsId":"IP-073825","costCenters":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470797,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1098/rspb.2016.0456","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":348554,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"283","issue":"1833","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":12,"text":"Tacoma PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-06-29","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5a06c8d2e4b09af898c86154","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Merkle, Jerod","contributorId":172972,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Merkle","given":"Jerod","affiliations":[{"id":35288,"text":"Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, University of Wyoming","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":721528,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Monteith, Kevin L.","contributorId":198656,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Monteith","given":"Kevin","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":721529,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Aikens, Ellen O.","contributorId":198653,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Aikens","given":"Ellen","email":"","middleInitial":"O.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":721530,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Hayes, Matthew M.","contributorId":172344,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Hayes","given":"Matthew","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":721531,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Hersey, Kent","contributorId":99873,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Hersey","given":"Kent","affiliations":[{"id":6763,"text":"Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, Salt Lake City, Utah","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":721532,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Middleton, Arthur D.","contributorId":99440,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Middleton","given":"Arthur D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":721533,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Oates, Brendan","contributorId":200235,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Oates","given":"Brendan","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":721534,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7},{"text":"Sawyer, Hall","contributorId":39930,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Sawyer","given":"Hall","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":721535,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":8},{"text":"Scurlock, Brandon","contributorId":145744,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Scurlock","given":"Brandon","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":16219,"text":"Wyoming Game and Fish Department, PO Box 850, Pinedale, Wyoming","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":721536,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":9},{"text":"Kauffman, Matthew J. 0000-0003-0127-3900 mkauffman@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0127-3900","contributorId":189179,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kauffman","given":"Matthew J.","email":"mkauffman@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":506,"text":"Office of the AD Ecosystems","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":716617,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":10}]}}

Biogeographic models predict that populations occurring at the edges of the range may have compromised reproductive rates because of inferior habitat at range peripheries. When reproductive rates are chronically low, ungulate populations may lack the resiliency to rebound quickly after periods of environmental stress, and this effect may be greatest for heat-sensitive organisms at their southern range limit. To assess the demographic vulnerability of moose (&nbsp;</span><i>Alces alces</i><span><span>&nbsp;</span>), we studied relationships between reproductive rates, maternal age, and rump fat in the southernmost naturally occurring moose population in North America. For prime-aged moose in our study, pregnancy rates were high (92%), but moose aged &lt; 3 or &gt; 9 years had low pregnancy rates (32% and 38%, respectively). The relationship between rump fat and pregnancy was nonlinear such that a threshold of at least 2mm of rump fat yielded a high probability of being pregnant midwinter. In contrast, among pregnant moose, the probability of both producing a calf and recruiting it until spring increased linearly with rump fat. We also conducted a meta-analysis of pregnancy and twinning rates for adult (≥ 2 years) moose across a latitudinal gradient to compare reproductive rates from our study to other populations in North America. Moose living at southern latitudes tended to have lower reproductive rates than those living in the core of moose range, implying that southern moose populations may be demographically more vulnerable than northern moose populations.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford Academic","doi":"10.1093/jmammal/gyw099","usgsCitation":"Ruprecht, J.S., Hersey, K., Hafen, K., Monteith, K.L., DeCesare, N.J., Kauffman, M., and MacNulty, D.R., 2016, Reproduction in moose at their southern range limit: Journal of Mammalogy, v. 97, no. 5, p. 1355-1365, https://doi.org/10.1093/jmammal/gyw099.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"1355","endPage":"1365","ipdsId":"IP-068645","costCenters":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":348556,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","otherGeospatial":"Uinta Mountions, Wasatch Mountains","volume":"97","issue":"5","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":12,"text":"Tacoma PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-07-14","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5a06c8d3e4b09af898c86158","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ruprecht, Joel S.","contributorId":200236,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Ruprecht","given":"Joel","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":721537,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hersey, Kent","contributorId":99873,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Hersey","given":"Kent","affiliations":[{"id":6763,"text":"Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, Salt Lake City, Utah","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":721538,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Hafen, Konrad","contributorId":172290,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Hafen","given":"Konrad","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":721539,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Monteith, Kevin L.","contributorId":198656,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Monteith","given":"Kevin","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":721540,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"DeCesare, Nicholas J.","contributorId":200237,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"DeCesare","given":"Nicholas","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":721541,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Kauffman, Matthew J. 0000-0003-0127-3900 mkauffman@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0127-3900","contributorId":189179,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kauffman","given":"Matthew J.","email":"mkauffman@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":506,"text":"Office of the AD Ecosystems","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":716616,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"MacNulty, Daniel R.","contributorId":64069,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"MacNulty","given":"Daniel","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":721542,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7}]}}

In this study we evaluated the variability in the sensitivity of permafrost and C in recent decades among land surface model simulations over the permafrost region between 1960 and 2009. The 15 model simulations all predict a loss of near-surface permafrost (within 3 m) area over the region, but there are large differences in the magnitude of the simulated rates of loss among the models (0.2 to 58.8 × 10</span><sup>3</sup><span> km</span><sup>2</sup><span> yr</span><sup>−1</sup><span>). Sensitivity simulations indicated that changes in air temperature largely explained changes in permafrost area, although interactions among changes in other environmental variables also played a role. All of the models indicate that both vegetation and soil C storage together have increased by 156 to 954 Tg C yr</span><sup>−1</sup><span>between 1960 and 2009 over the permafrost region even though model analyses indicate that warming alone would decrease soil C storage. Increases in gross primary production (GPP) largely explain the simulated increases in vegetation and soil C. The sensitivity of GPP to increases in atmospheric CO</span><sub>2</sub><span><span>&nbsp;</span>was the dominant cause of increases in GPP across the models, but comparison of simulated GPP trends across the 1982–2009 period with that of a global GPP data set indicates that all of the models overestimate the trend in GPP. Disturbance also appears to be an important factor affecting C storage, as models that consider disturbance had lower increases in C storage than models that did not consider disturbance. To improve the modeling of C in the permafrost region, there is the need for the modeling community to standardize structural representation of permafrost and carbon dynamics among models that are used to evaluate the permafrost C feedback and for the modeling and observational communities to jointly develop data sets and methodologies to more effectively benchmark models.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"AGU","doi":"10.1002/2016GB005405","usgsCitation":"McGuire, A.D., Koven, C., Lawrence, D.M., Clein, J.S., Xia, J., Beer, C., Burke, E.J., Chen, G., Chen, X., Delire, C., Jafarov, E., MacDougall, A.H., Marchenko, S., Nicolsky, D.J., Peng, S., Rinke, A., Saito, K., Zhang, W., Alkama, R., Bohn, T.J., Ciais, P., Decharme, B., Ekici, A., Gouttevin, I., Hajima, T., Hayes, D.J., Ji, D., Krinner, G., Lettenmaier, D.P., Luo, Y., Miller, P.A., Moore, J., Romanovsky, V., Schädel, C., Schaefer, K., Schuur, E.A., Smith, B., Sueyoshi, T., and Zhuang, Q., 2016, Variability in the sensitivity among model simulations of permafrost and carbon dynamics in the permafrost region between 1960 and 2009: Global Biogeochemical Cycles, v. 30, no. 7, p. 1015-1037, https://doi.org/10.1002/2016GB005405.","productDescription":"23 p.","startPage":"1015","endPage":"1037","ipdsId":"IP-073905","costCenters":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470798,"rank":0,"type":{"id":41,"text":"Open Access External Repository Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1002/2016gb005405","text":"External Repository"},{"id":348460,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"30","issue":"7","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":12,"text":"Tacoma PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-07-08","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5a0425bfe4b0dc0b45b453f5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McGuire, A. We radio-marked 196 individual rails and examined the evidence from 152 recovered California Ridgway’s rail mortalities from our radio-marked sample and determined plausible cause of death from a wide array of evidence. We also included 10 additional California Ridgway’s rail mortalities (unmarked) that we encountered during our normal field operations. We assigned a likely cause of death to 130 of the recoveries, of which 127 were determined to be caused by predation. Of those, 103 could be divided into class of cause (avian or mammalian), and avian predators were responsible for 64% of those events. Primary predators identified include domestic or feral cats, red fox, owl, and northern harrier. We did find seasonal differences between avian and mammalian predation rates, with higher proportions of avian predation in the winter and early spring. This rotation has been going on for at least 15 Ma. The Yakima fold and thrust belt (YFTB) forms the boundary between northern Oregon and central Washington where convergence of the clockwise-rotating Oregon block is apparently accommodated. North–south shortening across the YFTB has been thought to occur in a fan-like manner, increasing in rate to the west. We obtained high-accuracy, high-density geodetic GPS measurements in 2012–2014 that are used with earlier GPS measurements from the 1990s to characterize YFTB kinematics. The new results show that the deformation associated with the YFTB starts at the Blue Mountains Anticline in northern Oregon and extends north beyond the Frenchman Hills in Washington, past the epicentre of the 1872 </span><i>M</i><sub>w</sub><span> 7.0 Entiat earthquake to 49°N. The north–south strain rate across the region is 2 to 3 × 10</span><sup>−9</sup><span> yr</span><sup>−1</sup><span> between the volcanic arc and the eastern edge of the YFTB (241.0°E); east of there it drops to about 10</span><sup>−9</sup><span> yr</span><sup>−1</sup><span>. At the eastern boundary of the YFTB, faults and earthquake activity are truncated by a north-trending, narrow zone of deformation that runs along the Pasco Basin and Moses Lake regions near 240.9°E. This zone, abutting the Department of Energy Hanford Nuclear Reservation, accommodates about 0.5 mm&nbsp;yr</span><sup>−1</sup><span> of east to northeast shortening. A similar zone of N-trending transpression is seen along 239.9°E where there is a change in the strike of the Yakima folds. The modern deformation of the YFTB is about 600&nbsp;km wide from south to north and internally may be controlled by pre-existing crustal structure.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford University Press","doi":"10.1093/gji/ggw252","usgsCitation":"McCaffrey, R., King, R.W., Wells, R.E., Lancaster, M., and Miller, M.M., 2016, Contemporary deformation in the Yakima fold and thrust belt estimated with GPS: Geophysical Journal International, v. 207, no. 1, p. 1-11, https://doi.org/10.1093/gji/ggw252.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"11","ipdsId":"IP-073652","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470784,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1093/gji/ggw252","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":337545,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"207","issue":"1","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":14,"text":"Menlo Park PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-07-11","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58c90127e4b0849ce97abced","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McCaffrey, Robert","contributorId":189078,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"McCaffrey","given":"Robert","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":683802,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"King, Robert W.","contributorId":189079,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"King","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":683803,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Wells, Ray E. 0000-0002-7796-0160 rwells@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7796-0160","contributorId":149772,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wells","given":"Ray","email":"rwells@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":683801,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Lancaster, Matthew","contributorId":189080,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Lancaster","given":"Matthew","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":683804,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Miller, M. Using high-resolution data from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, we examine Cross crater’s basin-filling sedimentary deposits. Visible/shortwave infrared (VSWIR) spectra from the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) show absorptions diagnostic of alunite. Combining spectral data with high-resolution images, we map a large (10 km × 5 km) alunite-bearing deposit in southwest Cross crater, widespread kaolin-bearing sediments with variable amounts of alunite that are layered in &lt;10 m scale beds, and silica- and/or montmorillonite-bearing deposits that occupy topographically lower, heavily fractured units. The secondary minerals are found at elevations ranging from 700 to 1550 m, forming a discontinuous ring along the crater wall beneath darker capping materials. The mineralogy inside Cross crater is different from that of the surrounding terrains and other martian basins, where Fe/Mg-phyllosilicates and Ca/Mg-sulfates are commonly found. Alunite in Cross crater indicates acidic, sulfurous waters at the time of its formation. Waters in Cross crater were likely supplied by regionally upwelling groundwaters as well as through an inlet valley from a small adjacent depression to the east, perhaps occasionally forming a lake or series of shallow playa lakes in the closed basin. Like nearby Columbus crater, Cross crater exhibits evidence for acid sulfate alteration, but the alteration in Cross is more extensive/complete. The large but localized occurrence of alunite suggests a localized, high-volume source of acidic waters or vapors, possibly supplied by sulfurous (H</span><sub>2</sub><span>S- and/or SO</span><sub>2</sub><span>-bearing) waters in contact with a magmatic source, upwelling steam or fluids through fracture zones. The unique, highly aluminous nature of the Cross crater deposits relative to other martian acid sulfate deposits indicates acid waters, high water throughput during alteration, atypically glassy and/or felsic materials, or a combination of these conditions.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Mineralogical Society of America","doi":"10.2138/am-2016-5574","usgsCitation":"Ehlmann, Two separate validation approaches indicate this dataset provides a more accurate representation of glacial ice and perennial snow cover for the region than either the U.S. glacier database derived from US Geological Survey (USGS) Digital Raster Graphics (DRG) maps (based on aerial photography primarily from the 1960s–1980s) or the National Land Cover Database 2011 perennial ice and snow cover class. Our 2010–2014 Landsat-derived dataset indicates 28% less glacier and perennial snow cover than the USGS DRG dataset. There are larger differences between the datasets in some regions, such as the Rocky Mountains of Northwest Wyoming and Southwest Montana, where the Landsat dataset indicates 54% less PISC area. Analysis of Landsat scenes from 1987–1988 and 2008–2010 for three regions using a more conventional, semi-automated approach indicates substantial decreases in glaciers and perennial snow cover that correlate with differences between PISC mapped by the USGS DRG dataset and the automated Landsat-derived dataset. This suggests that most of the differences in PISC between the USGS DRG and the Landsat-derived dataset can be attributed to decreases in PISC, as opposed to differences between mapping techniques. While the dataset produced by the automated Landsat mapping approach is not designed to serve as a conventional glacier inventory that provides glacier outlines and attribute information, it allows for an updated estimate of PISC for the conterminous U.S. as well as for smaller regions. Identification and quantification of land use impacts to aquatic ecosystems are a necessary first step to aid in mitigation of negative consequences to biota. However, quantifying physical environmental quality such as stream and riparian habitat often can be quite difficult, particularly when there is time or fiscal limitations. As such, standard protocols such as the U.S. EPA’s Stream Habitat Rapid Bioassessment Protocol have been established to be cost- and time-effective. This protocol estimates ten different stream and riparian conditions on a scale of 0 to 20. Unfortunately, using estimations can be problematic because of large potential variation in the scoring depending on differences in training, experience, and opinion of the personnel doing the estimations. In order to help negate these biases and provide a simplified process, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) developed a functional assessment for streams that measures 11 stream and riparian variables along with watershed land use to calculate three different scores, a hydrology score, biogeochemical score, and habitat score. In our study, we examined the correlation of stream salamander presence and abundance to the three USACE scores. In the summer of 2013, we visited 70 sites in the southwest Virginia Coalfields multiple times to collect salamanders and quantify stream and riparian microhabitat parameters. Using occupancy and abundance analyses, we found strong relationships among three Desmognathus spp. and the USACE Habitat FCI score. Accordingly, the Habitat FCI score provides a reasonable assessment of physical instream and riparian conditions that may serve as a surrogate for understanding the community composition and integrity of aquatic salamander in the region. </p>","language":"English","publisher":" American Society of Mining and Reclamation","doi":"10.21000/JASMR16010045","usgsCitation":"Sweeten, S.E., and Ford, W.M., 2016, Validation of a stream and riparian habitat assessment protocol using stream salamanders in the southwest Virginia coalfields: Journal of the American Society of Mining and Reclamation, v. 5, no. 1, p. 45-66, https://doi.org/10.21000/JASMR16010045.","productDescription":"22 p.","startPage":"45","endPage":"66","ipdsId":"IP-064392","costCenters":[{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470782,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"http://doi.org/10.21000/jasmr16010045","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":340613,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Virginia","volume":"5","issue":"1","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":9,"text":"Reston PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-05-27","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"590454a4e4b022cee40dc238","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sweeten, Sara E.","contributorId":191565,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Sweeten","given":"Sara","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":693485,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ford, W. Freeze-tolerance requires a suite of complex, physiological mechanisms (e.g., cryoprotectant synthesis); however, behavioral strategies (e.g., hibernal habitat selection) may be used to regulate hibernaculum temperatures and promote overwintering survival. We investigated the hibernal ecology of the freeze-tolerant Wood Frog (</span><i>Lithobates sylvaticus</i><span>) in north-central Maine. Our objectives were to characterize the species hibernaculum microclimate (temperature, relative humidity), evaluate hibernal habitat selection, and describe the spatial arrangement of breeding, post-breeding, and hibernal habitats. We monitored 15 frogs during two winters (2011/12: </span><i>N</i><span> = 10; 2012/13: </span><i>N</i><span> = 5), measured hibernal habitat features at micro (2 m) and macro (10 m) spatial scales, and recorded microclimate hourly in three strata (hibernaculum, leaf litter, ambient air). We compared these data to that of 57 random locations with logistic regression models, Akaike Information Criterion, and Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests. Hibernaculum microclimate was significantly different and less variable than leaf litter, ambient air, and random location microclimate. Model averaging indicated that canopy cover (−), leaf litter depth (+), and number of logs and stumps (+; microhabitat only) were important predictors of Wood Frog hibernal habitat. These habitat features likely act to insulate hibernating frogs from extreme and variable air temperatures. For example, decreased canopy cover facilitates increased snowpack depth and earlier snowpack accumulation and melt. Altered winter temperature and precipitation patterns attributable to climate change may reduce snowpack insulation, facilitate greater temperature variation in the underlying hibernacula, and potentially compromise Wood Frog winter survival.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"The Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles","doi":"10.1670/15-131R1","usgsCitation":"Groff, L.A., Calhoun, A.J., and Loftin, C., 2016, Hibernal habitat selection by Wood Frogs (<i>Lithobates sylvaticus</i>) in a northern New England montane landscape: Journal of Herpetology, v. 50, no. 4, p. 559-569, https://doi.org/10.1670/15-131R1.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"559","endPage":"569","ipdsId":"IP-066293","costCenters":[{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":340604,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Maine","volume":"50","issue":"4","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":9,"text":"Reston PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"590454a4e4b022cee40dc236","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Groff, Luke A.","contributorId":95735,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Groff","given":"Luke","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":693466,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Calhoun, Aram J.K.","contributorId":93829,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Calhoun","given":"Aram","email":"","middleInitial":"J.K.","affiliations":[{"id":7063,"text":"University of Maine","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":693467,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Loftin, Cynthia S. 0000-0001-9104-3724 cyndy_loftin@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9104-3724","contributorId":2167,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Loftin","given":"Cynthia S.","email":"cyndy_loftin@usgs.gov","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":693116,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

A numerical groundwater flow model of the Inland Bays Watershed, Delaware, USA, was developed to identify the primary hydrogeologic factors that affect groundwater discharge rates and transit times to streams and bays. The distribution of groundwater discharge between streams and bays is sensitive to the depth of the water table below land surface. Higher recharge and reduced hydraulic conductivity raised the water table and increased discharge to streams relative to bays compared to the Reference case (in which 66% of recharge is discharged to streams). Increases to either factor decreased transit times for discharge to both streams and bays compared to the Reference case (in which mean transit times are 56.5 and 94.3&nbsp;years, respectively), though sensitivity to recharge is greater. Groundwater-borne nitrogen loads were calculated from nitrogen concentrations measured in discharging fresh groundwater and modeled SGD rates. These loads combined with long SGD transit times suggest groundwater-borne nitrogen reductions and estuarine water quality improvements will lag decades behind implementation of efforts to manage nutrient sources. This work enhances understanding of the hydrogeologic controls on and uncertainties in absolute and relative rates and transit times of groundwater discharge to streams and bays in coastal watersheds.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.jhydrol.2016.05.013","usgsCitation":"Russoniello, C.J., Konikow, L.F., Kroeger, K.D., Fernandez, C., Andres, A., and Michael, H.A., 2016, Hydrogeologic controls on groundwater discharge and nitrogen loads in a coastal watershed: Journal of Hydrology, v. 538, p. 783-793, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jhydrol.2016.05.013.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"783","endPage":"793","ipdsId":"IP-071064","costCenters":[{"id":436,"text":"National Research Program - Eastern Branch","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470791,"rank":0,"type":{"id":41,"text":"Open Access External Repository Page"},"url":"https://hdl.handle.net/1912/8150","text":"External Repository"},{"id":338942,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"538","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":9,"text":"Reston PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58df6ac0e4b02ff32c6aea2f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Russoniello, Chrtopher J.","contributorId":190221,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Russoniello","given":"Chrtopher","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":687831,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Konikow, Leonard F. 0000-0002-0940-3856 lkonikow@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0940-3856","contributorId":158,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Konikow","given":"Leonard","email":"lkonikow@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[{"id":436,"text":"National Research Program - Eastern Branch","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":687830,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Kroeger, Kevin D. 0000-0002-4272-2349 kkroeger@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4272-2349","contributorId":1603,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kroeger","given":"Kevin","email":"kkroeger@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":41100,"text":"Coastal and Marine Hazards and Resources Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":687832,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Fernandez, Cristina","contributorId":190222,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Fernandez","given":"Cristina","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":687833,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Andres, A.
