The objective of this replicated, population level, capture-re-capture experiment on meadow voles was to estimate and compare population characteristics of voles between (1) corridor-linked fragments, (2) isolated or non-linked fragments, and (3) unfragmented areas. We conducted two field experiments involving 22600 captures of 5700 individuals. In the first, the maintained corridor study, corridors were maintained at the time of fragmentation, and in the second, the constructed corridor study, we constructed corridors between patches that had been fragmented for some period of time. We applied multistate capture-recapture models with the robust design to estimate adult movement and survival rates, population size, temporal variation in population size, recruitment, and juvenile survival rates. Movement rates increased to a greater extent on constructed corridor-linked grids than on the unfragmented or non-linked fragmented grids between the pre- and post-treatment periods. We found significant differences in local survival on the treated (corridor-linked) grids compared to survival on the fragmented and unfragmented grids between the pre- and post-treatment periods. We found no clear pattern of treatment effects on population size or recruitment in either study. However, in both studies, we found that unfragmented grids were more stable than the fragmented grids based on lower temporal variability in population size. To our knowledge, this is the first experimental study demonstrating that corridors constructed between existing fragmented populations can indeed cause increases in movement and associated changes in demography, supporting the use of constructed corridors for this purpose in conservation biology.","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1034/j.1600-0706.2001.930101.x","usgsCitation":"Coffman, C., Nichols, J., and Pollock, K.H., 2001, Population dynamics of Microtus Recently, this statistical theory has been extended to modeling dispersal of open populations. Multistate models can be used to estimate movement probabilities among subdivided populations if multiple sites are sampled. Frequently, however, sampling is limited to a single site, Models described by Burnham (1993, in Marked Individuals in the Study of Bird Populations, 199–213), which combined open population capture-recapture and band-recovery models, can be used to estimate permanent emigration when sampling is limited to a single population. Similarly, Kendall, Nichols, and Hines (1997, Ecology51, 563–578) developed models to estimate temporary emigration under Pollock's (1982, Journal of Wildlife Management46, 757–760) robust design. We describe a likelihood-based approach to simultaneously estimate temporary and permanent emigration when sampling is limited to a single population. We use a sampling design that combines the robust design and recoveries of individuals obtained immediately following each sampling period. We present a general form for our model where temporary emigration is a first-order Markov process, and we discuss more restrictive models. We illustrate these models with analysis of data on marked Canvasback ducks. Our analysis indicates that probability of permanent emigration for adult female Canvasbacks was 0.193 ( ) and that birds that were present at the study area in year i— 1 had a higher probability of presence in year i than birds that were not present in year i— 1.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1111/j.0006-341X.2001.00273.x","usgsCitation":"Lindberg, M.S., Kendall, W., Hines, J., and Anderson, M., 2001, Combining band recovery data and Pollock's robust design to model temporary and permanent emigration: Biometrics, v. 57, no. 1, p. 273-281, https://doi.org/10.1111/j.0006-341X.2001.00273.x.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"273","endPage":"281","numberOfPages":"9","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":200211,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"57","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2004-05-24","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae775","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lindberg, M. Although there are many data gaps in our knowledge about the habitat requirements and ecology of many amphibian species, it is apparent that community composition, presence and frequency of abnormalities, various mensural characteristics (e.g. snout vent length divided by body weight) and laboratory diagnostics (e.g. cholinesterase activity, blood chemistry) can be used in developing metrics for an index of biotic integrity. In addition, potential metrics can be derived from the various life stages that most amphibians experience such as egg clusters; embryonic development and hatching rates; tadpole growth, development, and survival; progress and success of metamorphosis; and breeding behavior and presence of adults. It is important, however, to focus on regional biodiversity and species assemblages of amphibians in the development of metrics rather than to strive for broadscale application of common metrics. We applied a double-observer approach to estimate detection rates of birds from point counts in Maryland, USA, and test whether detection rates differed between point counts conducted in field habitats as opposed to wooded habitats. We conducted 2 analyses. The first analysis was based on 4 clusters of counts (routes) surveyed by a single pair of observers. A series of models was developed with differing assumptions about sources of variation in detection probabilities and fit using program SURVIV. The most appropriate model was selected using Akaike's Information Criterion. The second analysis was based on 13 routes (7 woods and 6 field routes) surveyed by various observers in which average detection rates were estimated by route and compared using a t-test. In both analyses, little evidence existed for variation in detection probabilities in relation to habitat. Double-observer methods provide a reasonable means of estimating detection probabilities and testing critical assumptions needed for analysis of point counts.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Wildlife, Land, and People: Priorities for the 21st Century","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"The Wildlife Society","publisherLocation":"Bethesda, Maryland","collaboration":"Proceedings of the Second International Wildlife Management Congress, held June 28 - July 2, 1999, Godollo, Hungary. Here, we present a review of the methods available for estimating dispersal and related parameters using marked individuals. We emphasize methods that place dispersal in a probabilistic framework. In this context, we define a dispersal event as a movement of a specified distance or from one predefined patch to another, the magnitude of the distance or the definition of a `patch? depending on the ecological or evolutionary question(s) being addressed. We have organized the chapter based on four general classes of data for animals that are captured, marked, and released alive: (1) recovery data, in which animals are recovered dead at a subsequent time, (2) recapture/resighting data, in which animals are either recaptured or resighted alive on subsequent sampling occasions, (3) known-status data, in which marked animals are reobserved alive or dead at specified times with probability 1.0, and (4) combined data, in which data are of more than one type (e.g., live recapture and ring recovery). For each data type, we discuss the data required, the estimation techniques, and the types of questions that might be addressed from studies conducted at single and multiple sites.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Dispersal","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"Oxford University Press","publisherLocation":"Oxford","usgsCitation":"Bennetts, R., Nichols, J., Pradel, R., Lebreton, J., and Kitchens, W., 2001, Methods for estimating dispersal probabilities and related parameters using marked animals, chap. of Dispersal, p. 3-17.","productDescription":"448","startPage":"3","endPage":"17","numberOfPages":"448","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":203075,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a51e4b07f02db62a1e5","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Clobert, Jean","contributorId":114051,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Clobert","given":"Jean","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":507597,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Danchin, Etienne","contributorId":69034,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Danchin","given":"Etienne","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":507595,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Dhondt, Andre A.","contributorId":93620,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dhondt","given":"Andre","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":507596,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Nichols, James D. 0000-0002-7631-2890 jnichols@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7631-2890","contributorId":405,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nichols","given":"James D.","email":"jnichols@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":507594,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":4}],"authors":[{"text":"Bennetts, R.E.","contributorId":103214,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bennetts","given":"R.E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":330060,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Nichols, J.D. 0000-0002-7631-2890","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7631-2890","contributorId":14332,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nichols","given":"J.D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":330057,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Pradel, R.","contributorId":85692,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pradel","given":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":330058,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Lebreton, J.D.","contributorId":104186,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lebreton","given":"J.D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":330061,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Kitchens, W.M.","contributorId":87647,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kitchens","given":"W.M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":330059,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

A powerful suite of contemporary analytical models is available for using recapture data to estimate population size, survival rates and other parameters, and many banders collect recapture data for their project specific needs. However, despite widely recognized, broader programmatic needs for more and better data, banders' recapture data are not centrally reposited and made available for use by others. To address this need, the US Bird Banding Laboratory, the Canadian Bird Banding Office and the Georgia Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit are developing a bird banding recapture database. In this poster we discuss the critical steps in developing the database, including: determining exactly which recapture data should be included; developing a standard record format and structure for the database; developing electronic means for collecting, vetting and disseminating the data; and most importantly, developing metadata descriptions and individual data set profiles to facilitate the user's selection of appropriate analytical models. We provide examples of individual data sets to be included in the database, and we assess the feasibility of developing a prescribed program for obtaining recapture data from banders who do not presently collect them. It is expected that the recapture database eventually will contain millions of records made available publicly for a variety of avian research and management purposes","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Abstracts of papers presented at the 119th stated meeting of the American Ornithologists' Union in conjunction with the 20th annual meeting of the Society of Canadian Ornithologists Societe des Ornithologistes du Canada 16 - 18 August at the University of Washington, Seattle","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Tautin, J., Doherty, P., and Metras, L., 2001, Development of a bird banding recapture database, chap. of Abstracts of papers presented at the 119th stated meeting of the American Ornithologists' Union in conjunction with the 20th annual meeting of the Society of Canadian Ornithologists Societe des Ornithologistes du Canada 16 - 18 August at the University of Washington, Seattle.","productDescription":"168","startPage":"104 abstra","numberOfPages":"168","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":200889,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ee4b07f02db660882","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tautin, J.","contributorId":95168,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tautin","given":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":330601,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Doherty, P.F. In addition, it can be used to estimate the probability of being available for capture, which in some cases (e.g., breeding proportion) has ecological significance. This phenomenon can be modeled as a completely random process, Markovian, or with temporary trap dependence. Analysis of this type of data is one of the options in program MARK. By using MARK the relationship between parameters and covariates can be modeled, and various approaches to goodness of fit, model selection, and model averaging can be implemented.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Wildlife, Land and People: Priorities for the 21st Century","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"The Wildlife Society","publisherLocation":"Bethesda, Maryland","collaboration":"Proceedings of the Second International Wildlife Management Congress, held June 28 - July 2, 1999, Godollo, Hungary. The difficulty arises because of the inability to count all animals present in any sampled area. This inability results not only in underestimation of species richness but also in potentially misleading comparisons of species richness over time and space. We recommend the use of probabilistic estimators for estimating species richness and related parameters (e.g., rate of change in species richness, local extinction probability, local turnover, local colonization) when animal detection probabilities are <1. We illustrate these methods using data from the North American Breeding Bird Survey obtained along survey routes in Maryland. We also introduce software to implement these estimation methods. We developed models that predict the probability of occurrence for species during the nesting season as a function of forest area and degree of urbanization. All of the 21 bird species considered occurred in a higher proportion of forests in portions of the county with low or moderate urbanization than in forests in highly urbanized areas, but species differed in their response to urbanization. We calculated the predicted probability of occurrence for each species in each forest in Prince George's County, summed the probabilities to obtain an estimate of the expected number of area-sensitive species, and integrated the expected numbers with a geographic information system coverage of Prince George's County forests to map patterns of species richness countywide. This information can be used to focus efforts to conserve habitat for area-sensitive forest birds, both in Prince George's County and throughout the Chesapeake Bay region.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Conservation of Biological Diversity: A Key to the Restoration of the Chesapeake Bay Ecosystem and Beyond. Although a tremendous volume of baseline data exists, it is often diffusely distributed and inaccessible to the resource manager and decision maker. A mechanism that facilitates assembly, documentation and delivery of avian data in a user-friendly manner is needed in order to integrate bird-related information resources across agencies and organizations. To address this fundamental need, the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII), in partnership with the U.S. Geological Survey's Patuxent Wildlife Research Center and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is developing a web-based interactive system that will focus on access to bird population and habitat data used in bird management and conservation. This system, known as the NBII Bird Conservation Node, will support planning and evaluation of bird conservation activities within the context of the North American Bird Conservation Initiative (NABCI), a framework for collaboration among organizations interested in bird conservation across North America. Initial development of the NBII Bird Conservation Node will focus on creating a prototype mapping application that will provide interactive access to data from the North American Breeding Bird Survey, the Colonial Waterbird Survey, the Breeding Waterfowl Population and Habitat Survey, and the Atlantic Flyway Mid-winter Waterfowl Survey. This prototype mapping application, to be available on-line at http://www.nbii.gov by Sep 2001, will lay the foundation for establishment of a Migratory Bird Data Center at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, and will provide an opportunity for linking to and establishing partnerships with other sources of bird population and habitat data available over the Internet.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Abstracts of papers presented at the 119th stated meeting of the American Ornithologists' Union in conjunction with the 20th annual meeting of the Society of Canadian Ornithologists Societe des Ornithologistes du Canada 16 - 18 August at the University of Washington, Seattle","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Martin, E., Peterjohn, B., and Koneff, M., 2001, Access to bird population data, chap. of Abstracts of papers presented at the 119th stated meeting of the American Ornithologists' Union in conjunction with the 20th annual meeting of the Society of Canadian Ornithologists Societe des Ornithologistes du Canada 16 - 18 August at the University of Washington, Seattle, p. 155-156.","productDescription":"168","startPage":"155","endPage":"156","numberOfPages":"168","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":37226,"text":"Core Science Analytics, Synthesis, and Libraries","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":200901,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b12e4b07f02db6a2567","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Martin, E.","contributorId":76425,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Martin","given":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":330610,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Peterjohn, B.G.","contributorId":25255,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Peterjohn","given":"B.G.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":330608,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Koneff, M.D.","contributorId":37031,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Koneff","given":"M.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":330609,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The percent of infected fish remains relatively constant until the fish pass river mile 1,319 at Dawson, Y.T., then it drops to 13% when they reach river mile 1,745 at Whitehorse, Y.T. When the sexes are examined separately, slightly more females are infected than males (29% vs 22%). The percent of fish exhibiting clinical signs (diseased) is 2-3% when they enter the river, but increases to over 20% at river mile 715 near Tanana, AK. Disease prevalence within the population remains constant at >20% until fish pass Dawson, then the percent of diseased fish drops to <9% at Whitehorse. When the sexes are examined separately, male disease prevalence is highest at Tanana (22.6%) then gradually drops to just 12.9% at Whitehorse. Females however, continue to show an increase in disease prevalence peaking at river mile 1,081 near Circle, AK, at 36.4%, then dropping to just 5.3% at Whitehorse. Data on infection and disease collected from kings at Nenana on the Tanana River more closely resembles that seen at Whitehorse than the lower and middle Yukon River.
\n
When data collected in 1999 and 2000 are compared the prevalence of infection in males remains the same while a 15% drop in infection prevalence occurs in females. There is also a drop in the percent of infected fish showing Ichthyophonus infection of the muscle. This difference may be related to a 2°C lower river temperature in 2000 compared with 1999.
\n
Significant egg resorption was seen in 25% of females but no correlation with Ichthyophonus infection could be made. The cause of resorption and the extent to which it affects fecundity has yet to be determined.
\n
Attempts to experimentally infect Chinook salmon and rainbow trout with Yukon River Ichthyophonus isolates were essentially unsuccessful by both feeding of infected tissues and injection of cultured spores. However, other unrelated fish species were infected without difficulty.
\n
A method for non-lethal sampling of adult spawning Chinook salmon for Ichthyophonus was developed using known infected fish and live returning spawners. The method consisted of taking punch biopsies of skin and muscle and culturing the biopsy tissue in vitro. The database was designed to catalog available literature and to document results of the synthesis in a format that would facilitate current and future research on highway and urban runoff. This report documents the design and implementation of the NDAMS relational database, which was designed to provide a catalog of available information and the results of an assessment of the available data. \r\n\r\nAll the citations and the metadata collected during the review process are presented in a stratified metadatabase that contains citations for relevant publications, abstracts (or previa), and reportreview metadata for a sample of selected reports that document results of runoff quality investigations. The database is referred to as a metadatabase because it contains information about available data sets rather than a record of the original data. The database contains the metadata needed to evaluate and characterize how valid, current, complete, comparable, and technically defensible published and available information may be when evaluated for application to the different dataquality objectives as defined by decision makers. This database is a relational database, in that all information is ultimately linked to a given citation in the catalog of available reports. The main database file contains 86 tables consisting of 29 data tables, 11 association tables, and 46 domain tables. The data tables all link to a particular citation, and each data table is focused on one aspect of the information collected in the literature search and the evaluation of available information.\r\n\r\nThis database is implemented in the Microsoft (MS) Access database software because it is widely used within and outside of government and is familiar to many existing and potential customers. The stratified metadatabase design for the NDAMS program is presented in the MS Access file DBDESIGN.mdb and documented with a data dictionary in the NDAMS_DD.mdb file recorded on the CD-ROM. The data dictionary file includes complete documentation of the table names, table descriptions, and information about each of the 419 fields in the database.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/ofr2000480","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (A Contribution to the National Highway Runoff Data and Methodology Synthesis)","usgsCitation":"Granato, G., and Tessler, S., 2001, Data Model and Relational Database Design for Highway Runoff Water-Quality Metadata: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-480, vi, 25 p.; 1 computer optical disc., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr2000480.","productDescription":"vi, 25 p.; 1 computer optical disc.","costCenters":[{"id":377,"text":"Massachusetts-Rhode Island Water Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":190779,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":9501,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/ofr00-480/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db699804","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Granato, Gregory E. 0000-0002-2561-9913 ggranato@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2561-9913","contributorId":1692,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Granato","given":"Gregory E.","email":"ggranato@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":466,"text":"New England Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":290880,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Tessler, Steven stessler@usgs.gov","contributorId":3772,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tessler","given":"Steven","email":"stessler@usgs.gov","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":290881,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The objective of this project is to develop and apply innovative remote sensing and geographic information system techniques to map the distribution of vegetation, vegetation characteristics, and related hydrologic variables through space and over time. The mapping and description of vegetation characteristics and their variations are necessary to accurately simulate surface hydrology and other surface processes in South Florida and to monitor land surface changes. As part of this research, data from many airborne and satellite imaging systems have been georeferenced and processed to facilitate data fusion and analysis. These image maps were created using image fusion techniques developed as part of this project.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/i2742","usgsCitation":"Jones, J., Thomas, J., and Desmond, G., 2001, South Florida Everglades: satellite image map: U.S. Geological Survey IMAP 2742, map, https://doi.org/10.3133/i2742.","productDescription":"map","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":6252,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://sofia.usgs.gov/projects/remote_sens/sflsatmap.html","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":187444,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"scale":"1","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -81.4,25 ], [ -81.4,25.916666666666668 ], [ -80,25.916666666666668 ], [ -80,25 ], [ -81.4,25 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e5e4b07f02db5e6db1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jones, John W. 0000-0001-6117-3691 jwjones@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6117-3691","contributorId":2220,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jones","given":"John","email":"jwjones@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":37786,"text":"WMA - Observing Systems Division","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":242,"text":"Eastern Geographic Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":280721,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Thomas, Jean-Claude","contributorId":58307,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thomas","given":"Jean-Claude","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":280723,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Desmond, G.B.","contributorId":35014,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Desmond","given":"G.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":280722,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

It compares estimates of annual suspended-sediment loads that were made using regression equations developed from paired TSS and SSC data, to annual loads computed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) using traditional techniques and SSC data. Load estimates were compared for 10 stations where sufficient TSS and SSC paired data were available to develop sediment-transport curves for the same time period that daily suspended-sediment records were available. Results of these analyses indicate that as the time frame over which the estimates were made increases, the overall errors associated with the estimates decreases with respect to loads computed using traditional USGS techniques. Using SSC data to compute loads tends to produce estimates closer to those computed by traditional techniques than those computed from TSS data. Loads computed from TSS data tend to be negatively biased with respect to those computed by traditional USGS techniques.","largerWorkTitle":"Bridging the Gap: Meeting the World's Water and Environmental Resources Challenges - Proceedings of the World Water and Environmental Resources Congress 2001","conferenceTitle":"World Water and Environmental Resources Congress 2001","conferenceLocation":"Orlando, FL","language":"English","publisher":"American Society of Civil Engineers","doi":"10.1061/40569(2001)123","isbn":"0784405697; 9780784405697","usgsCitation":"Glysson, G., Gray, J.R., and Schwarz, G., 2001, A comparison of load estimates using total suspended solids and suspended-sediment concentration data, in Bridging the Gap: Meeting the World's Water and Environmental Resources Challenges - Proceedings of the World Water and Environmental Resources Congress 2001, v. 111, Orlando, FL, p. 1-10, https://doi.org/10.1061/40569(2001)123.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"10","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":478816,"rank":10000,"type":{"id":41,"text":"Open Access External Repository Page"},"url":"http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/summary?doi=10.1.1.554.7498","text":"External Repository"},{"id":243045,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":215255,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1061/40569(2001)123"}],"volume":"111","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2012-04-26","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059e35de4b0c8380cd45fde","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Glysson, G.D.","contributorId":16430,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Glysson","given":"G.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":450361,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gray, J. The cores were obtained as part of the STRATAFORM Program (Nittrouer and Kravitz, 1995, 1996), a study investigating how present sedimentation and sediment transport processes influence long-term stratigraphic sequences preserved in the geologic record. The core samples were collected during four separate research cruises to the northern California study area, and data shown in the logs of the cores were collected using a multi-sensor whole core logger. The program is investigating the stratigraphic signature of the shelf and slope parts of the continental margins, and is designed to provide a better understanding of the sedimentary record and a better prediction of strata. Specifically, the goals of the STRATAFORM Program are to (Nittrouer and Kravitz, 1995):
\n
\n
- determine the geological relevance of short-term physical processes that erode, transport, and deposit particles and those processes that subsequently rework the seabed over time scales <10 2 years.
\n- improve capabilities for identifying the processes that form the strata observed within the upper ~100 m of the seabed commonly representing 104-106 years of sedimentation.
\n- synthesize this knowledge and bridge the gap between time scales of sedimentary processes and those of sequence stratigraphy.
\n
\n
The STRATAFORM Program is divided into studies of the continental shelf and the continental slope; the geotechnical group within the U.S. Geological Survey provides support to both parts of the project.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr01190","usgsCitation":"Minasian, D.L., Lee, H., Locat, J., Orzech, K.M., Martz, G.R., and Israel, K., 2001, The STRATAFORM Project: U.S. Geological Survey geotechnical studies: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-190, HTML Document, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr01190.","productDescription":"HTML Document","onlineOnly":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":420391,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_58860.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":282569,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0190/intro.html"},{"id":4198,"rank":3,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0190/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":176318,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr01190.GIF"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","city":"Eureka","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -124.8402,40.4456 ], [ -124.8402,41.2226 ], [ -123.9603,41.2226 ], [ -123.9603,40.4456 ], [ -124.8402,40.4456 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67ac79","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Minasian, Diane L. dminasian@usgs.gov","contributorId":12906,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Minasian","given":"Diane","email":"dminasian@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":241385,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lee, Homa J. hjlee@usgs.gov","contributorId":1021,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lee","given":"Homa J.","email":"hjlee@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":241384,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Locat, Jaques","contributorId":26358,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Locat","given":"Jaques","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":241386,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Orzech, Kevin M.","contributorId":38640,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Orzech","given":"Kevin","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":241387,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Martz, Gregory R.","contributorId":51835,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Martz","given":"Gregory","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":241389,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Israel, Kenneth","contributorId":44978,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Israel","given":"Kenneth","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":241388,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}

Data were acquired for three profiles, one of them along the northern terrace of Montosa Canyon, and the other two along the northern and southern terraces of Cottonwood Canyon. A total of 122 gravity stations were established as well as numerous magnetic data collected by a truckmounted cesium-vapor magnetometer. In addition, aeromagnetic data previously acquired were interpreted to obtain a geologically sound model, which produced a good fit to the data.\n\nGravity anomalies associated with faults exhibiting surface rupture were more pronounced than the respective magnetic anomalies. More credence was given to the gravity data when determining fault structures and it was found in all three profiles that faults at depth projected through alluvium at a steeper dip than the bedrock fault indicating brittle behavior within the overlying sediments. The gravity data also detected a significant horst and graben structure within Cottonwood Canyon. The aeromagnetic data did not provide any insight into the response of the minor faults but rather served to verify the regional response of the whole profile.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr01502","usgsCitation":"Baldyga, C.A., 2001, Relationship of faults in basin sediments to the gravity and magnetic expression of their underlying fault systems: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-502, 113 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr01502.","productDescription":"113 p.","numberOfPages":"113","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":175816,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr01502.jpg"},{"id":283178,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0502/pdf/of01-502.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":4280,"rank":3,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0502/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona","otherGeospatial":"Santa Rica Mountain Range","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -111.25,31.5 ], [ -111.25,32.0 ], [ -110.75,32.0 ], [ -110.75,31.5 ], [ -111.25,31.5 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a5fe4b07f02db634818","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Baldyga, Christopher A.","contributorId":29505,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Baldyga","given":"Christopher","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":241530,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Two recent landslide disasters are examined noting the potential for using remotely sensed rainfall data for landslide hazard analysis. For the June 27, 1995, storm in Madison County, Virginia, USA, National Weather Service WSR-88D Doppler radar provided rainfall estimates based on a relation between cloud reflectivity and moisture content on a 1 sq. km. resolution every 6 minutes. Ground-based measurements of rainfall intensity and precipitation total, in addition to landslide timing and distribution, were compared with the radar-derived rainfall data. For the December 14-16, 1999, storm in Vargas State, Venezuela, infrared sensing from the GOES-8 satellite of cloud top temperatures provided the basis for NOAA/NESDIS rainfall estimates on a 16 sq. km. resolution every 30 minutes. These rainfall estimates were also compared with ground-based measurements of rainfall and landslide distribution. In both examples, the remotely sensed data either overestimated or underestimated ground-based values by up to a factor of 2. The factors that influenced the accuracy of rainfall data include spatial registration and map projection, as well as prevailing wind direction, cloud orientation, and topography.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr01339","usgsCitation":"Wieczorek, G.F., McWreath, H., and Davenport, C., 2001, Remote rainfall sensing for landslide hazard analysis (Version 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-339, i, 11 p.: ill. The database was created for use as a basemap in a decision support system designed by the National Industrial Minerals and Surface Processes project. The resulting digital geologic map database can be queried in many ways to produce a variety of geologic maps. Digital base map data files (topography, roads, towns, rivers and lakes, etc.) are not included; they may be obtained from a variety of commercial and government sources. Additionally, point features, such as strike and dip, were not captured from the original paper map and are not included in the database. Data on habitat, fish, benthic macroinvertebrates, and sediment were collected at eight stations on six streams in the basin--Illinois River, Panther Creek, Mackinaw River, Indian Creek, Sangamon River, and La Moine River. These streams typically flow through agricultural lands with very low gradients. Substrates typically are clay to gravel with areas of cobble. Banks are high, steep, and sparsely vegetated. Topographic surveys provide illustrations of the geometry that promote understanding of channel geometry and a data set that, in the future, can be used by others to assess stream changes.\r\nSuspended-sediment particle size, woody debris, and stream velocity are important to fish and benthic macroinvertebrate communities. Fine particles (silts and clays) were abundant in suspended sediment and stream banks, and fish insectivorous cyprinid community composition increased with decreases in the concentration of these suspended fines. Suckers were prevalent in stream reaches with abundant woody-snag cover, whereas sunfish communities were most abundant in areas with slow water velocities. Hydropsychidae, Chironomidae, and Baetidae were the most abundant benthic macroinvertebrate families collected throughout the region, but stream size and water velocity were important to benthic macroinvertebrate community composition. Tricorythodes mayflies and Elmidae had higher relative abundance at sites in small- and moderate-size drainage basins, and Baetidae density was greatest in reaches with highest water velocity.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/wri014068","usgsCitation":"Adolphson, D.L., Fazio, D., and Harris, M.A., 2001, Habitat, biota, and sediment characteristics at selected stations in the lower Illinois River Basin, Illinois, 1996-98: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 2001-4068, vii, 52 p. : col. ill., col. map ; 28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri014068.","productDescription":"vii, 52 p. : col. ill., col. map ; 28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":5990,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://il.water.usgs.gov/pubsearch/reports.cgi/view?series=WRIR&number=01-4068","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":184245,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a7ee4b07f02db648566","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Adolphson, Debbie L.","contributorId":81960,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Adolphson","given":"Debbie","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":258253,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Fazio, David J.","contributorId":60319,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fazio","given":"David J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":258252,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Harris, Mitchell A. maharris@usgs.gov","contributorId":1382,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Harris","given":"Mitchell","email":"maharris@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":258251,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
