The information will be considered, together with other factors, in the preparation of an analysis of the impact of a potential nuclear-waste repository on the environment. Most of the geologic units in and adjacent to the Permian salt deposits are characterized by low permeabilities and highly mineralized water. Sandstone of the Delaware Mountain Group, which underlies the salt, has an average hydraulic conductivity of 0.16 ft/d and an average porosity of 15.65 percent. Flow is north-northeastward toward the margin of the Capitan Limestone, at velocities ranging from 0.0005 to 0.0008 ft/d. The Capitan Limestone, a relatively high yielding limestone-reef aquifer adjacent to the study area, has transmissivity values ranging from 500 sq ft/d to 10,000 sq ft/d and an average hydraulic conductivity of about 5 ft/d. Water movement west of the Pecos River is northeastward in the reef, with discharge at Carlsbad Springs. East of the Pecos River, water moves at very low rates and the direction of movement is uncertain. The Castile and Salado Formations, which might be used to contain the nuclear waste, have a few isolated pockets of brine and gas, but generally transmit little or no ground water. Recharge to ground water in the valley is derived from interbasin underflow and from local precipitation. The two sources may be of the same magnitude. Ground water beneath the valley moves toward the lowest area, a 200-square-mile saltpan, much of which is underlain by rock salt and other saline minerals, probably to depths of hundreds of feet or even more than 1,000 feet. Some water discharges from the saltpan by evaportranspiration. Water beneath the valley floor, excluding the saltpan, typically contains between 3,000 and 5,000 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids. Water from most springs and seeps in the mountains contains a few hundred to several hundred milligrams per liter of dissolved solids. Water from large springs that probably discharge from interbasin flow systems typically contains between 500 and 1,000 milligrams per liter dissolved solids. Present sites of intensive use by man are supplied by springs, with the exception of the Stovepipe Wells Hotel area. The most radioactive is the Graniteville Granite which contains an average of 16.9 ppm U and 42.6 ppm Th. The Butler Hill and Breadtray Granites also contain anomalous amounts, averaging 6.2 and 5.6 ppm U and 23.5 and 20.5 ppm Th respectively. Other Precambrian granitic rocks have normal concentrations of- U and Th. Fission track 'maps' indicate that high concentrations of uranium are associated with magnetite in the red granites; this uranium is presumed to be readily leachable by hydrothermal or supergene solutions. \r\n\r\nNo uranium minerals or ore grade concentrations of uranium were observed in or near the granites, but there-are conceptual reasons for the possible existence of uranium deposits in intragranitic veins and onlapping Cambrian-Ordovician sedimentary rocks. Although the red granites constitute a good potential source of uranium, there is not much evidence for uranium having been mobilized. Identification of features such as lamprophyre dikes and 'episyenite' alteration, or sedimentary rocks containing reductants, would be of value for exploration and would permit more favorable resource appraisal.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr77787","usgsCitation":"Nash, J.T., 1977, Uranium in Precambrian granitic rocks of the St. Francois Mountains, southeastern Missouri, with comments on uranium resource potential: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-787, 33 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77787.","productDescription":"33 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":393461,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_74786.htm"},{"id":38348,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0787/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":144008,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0787/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Missouri","otherGeospatial":"St. Francois Mountains","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -91,\n              37.35\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.1167,\n              37.35\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.1167,\n              37.4167\n            ],\n            [\n              -91,\n              37.4167\n            ],\n            [\n              -91,\n              37.35\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a18e4b07f02db6054c8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nash, J. Hydrologic and geothermal data were collected for each well or spring site. The data includes depth, chemical quality, temperature and specific conductance of water, quantity of flow, well construction, and well logs. These data show that the normal temperature gradient in the ground is about 1.1 degrees Celsius (2 degrees Fahrenheit) per 100 feet. The temperature gradient in the thermal areas is as high as 24.4 degrees Celsius (44 degrees Fahrenheit) per 100 feet. The highest temperature measured for all the wells and springs was 142.2 degrees Celsius (288 degrees Fahrenheit). The chemical quality of water in the study area is generally good except in areas where water evaporates from land surface at Owens Valley playa or where steam escapes into the atmosphere from land surface. Major lineaments were identified that separate the region into four distinct terrains. Within each terrain, smaller lineaments and other physiographic features show distinctive and consistent patterns, reflecting similarities in bedrock lithology and structure. The major linear features are given the following provisional geographic names: \r\n\r\nI. Lewiston line \r\n2. Merrymeeting lineament \r\n3. Dover-Foxcroft line \r\n4. Orland lineament \r\n5. Union lineament \r\n\r\nThese linear or curvilinear trends are caused by lithologic contrasts, joints, faults, or foliation in the middle and lower Paleozoic phyllites, schists, gneisses, and granite intrusives. Initial field and laboratory results from a pilot study of bedrock engineering conditions indicate that variations in rock strength and fracture spacing are controlled by lithology, intensity of structural deformation, and alteration. At several locations in the study area faults and major joints are alined with a major lineament. Strength anisotropy ratios are as high as 10 in the foliated rocks but near 1 in the granites. The higher compressive strength direction commonly is perpendicular to foliation and to lineament trends which, in turn, are parallel to faults, major joints, or foliation. \r\n\r\nFracture spacing in rocks in the field study area averages 0.5 m for granite and ranges from 0.2 cm to 0.75 m, with an average of 0.15 m, in metamorphic rocks. Diagnostic indications useful for estimating certain construction conditions are shown by point-load and uniaxial compressive strengths. Values for fresh rock range from less than 30 MN/m 2 for weakly bonded phyllite to more than 350 MN/m 2 for dense andesite and metasiltstone. Rock workability is directly related to compressive strength and spacing of joints.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77886","usgsCitation":"Lee, F.T., O’Leary, D.W., and Diehl, S.F., 1977, Preliminary analysis of lineaments and engineering properties of bedrock, Penobscot Bay area, Maine: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-886, iii, 23 leaves :ill., maps (1 fold.) ;28 cm.; (26 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77886.","productDescription":"iii, 23 leaves :ill., maps (1 fold.) ;28 cm.; (26 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143370,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0886/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37778,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0886/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37779,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0886/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67cab2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lee, Fitzhugh T.","contributorId":82272,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lee","given":"Fitzhugh","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160610,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"O’Leary, Dennis W.","contributorId":63396,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"O’Leary","given":"Dennis","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160609,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Diehl, Sharon F. diehl@usgs.gov","contributorId":1089,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Diehl","given":"Sharon","email":"diehl@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[{"id":211,"text":"Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":160608,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

'Caliche' includes various carbonates such as calcic soils and products of groundwater cementation. The term 'caliche' is generally avoided in this report in favor of such terms as calcrete, calcic soils, and pervasively cemented deposits. \r\n\r\nCriteria for the recognition of various types of calcrete of diverse origins include field relations and laboratory data. Calcic soils provide a comprehensive set of characteristics that aid in their recognition in the field. These characteristics include a distinctive morphology that is zoned horizontally and can frequently be traced over tens to hundreds of square kilometers. \r\n\r\nThe major process in the formation of pedogenic calcrete and calic soils is the leaching of calcium carbonate from upper soil horizons by downward percolating soil solutions and reprecipitation of the carbonate in alluvial horizons near the base of the soil profile. The formation of pedogenic calcrete involves many factors including climate, source of carbonate, and tectonic stability of the geomorphic surface on which the calcrete is deposited. Most of the carbonate in pedogenic calcrete is probably derived from windblown sand, dust, and rain. \r\n\r\nCalcic soils and pedogenic calcretes follow a six-stage sequence morphologic development and is based on a classification devised by Gile, Peterson and Grossman in 1966. The .six morphologic stages of carbonate deposition in soils are related to the relative age of the soil and are as follows: \r\n\r\nI. The first or youngest stage includes filamentous or faint coatings of carbonate on detrital grains. \r\nII. The second stage includes pebble coatings which are continuous; firm carbonate nodules are few to common. \r\nIII. The third stage includes coalesced nodules which occur in a friable or disseminated carbonate matrix. \r\nIV. The fourth stage includes platy, firmly cemented matrix which engulfs nodules; horizon is plugged to downward moving solutions. \r\nV. The fifth stage includes soils which are platy to tabular, dense, strongly cemented. A well-developed laminar layer occurs on the upper surface. \r\nVI. The sixth and most advanced stage is massive, multilaminar, and strongly cemented calcrete with abundant pisoliths, the upper surface of which may be brecciated. Pisoliths may indicate many generations of brecciation and reformation. \r\n\r\nIn general calcic soils include stages I through III and are friable to moderately indurated; whereas pedogenic calcretes include stages IV through VI and are dense and strongly indurated. In a single pedon the morphologic stage of carbonate deposition decreases downward in the profile. The stage of development may be used in local regions for correlation and determination of relative ages of soils and geomorphic surfaces. Some structures observed in pedogenic calcretes may be present in other types of calcrete but the horizontal zonation typical of deposits of soil processes is absent. Laminar structure in particular is not restricted to pedogenic deposits and is common in many varieties of calcrete. \r\n\r\nVery little chemical change occurs in the noncalcareous nonclayey fractions of calcretes with age; but clay minerals within calcretes undergo a complex history of authigenesis. There is a depletion of magnesium in the calcareous portion and an enrichment of magnesium in the clayey portion of a calcrete with age. In keeping with this relationship, montmorillonite, or mixed layer montmorillonite-illite, is common in younger calcretes; whereas the high magnesium-silicate clays, sepiolite and palygorskite, are common in older calcretes. This indicates that the magnesium depleted from the carbonate is redistributed authigenically in clay minerals. \r\n\r\nThe mobility of carbonate introduces many problems in attempts to date calcretes directly. Smaller nuclear events (ML&le;5.5) on Rainier Mesa and Yucca Flat detonated in the same time period did not trigger aftershock sequences. The aftershock series were displaced laterally from ground zero and occurred deeper (at 4&ndash;6 km) than the nuclear even depth of burial (~1 km). The aftershocks appear to occur on vertical faults with approximately north-south strike.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr77826","collaboration":"Prepared for the Nevada Operations Office Environmental Research and Development Administration","usgsCitation":"Rogers, A.M., Wuollet, G.M., and Covington, P.A., 1977, Seismicity of the Pahute Mesa area, Nevada Test Site: 8 October 1975 to 30 June 1976: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-826, v, 61 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77826.","productDescription":"v, 61 p.","numberOfPages":"66","temporalStart":"1975-10-08","temporalEnd":"1976-06-30","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":143312,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":270152,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0826/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":408836,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_74791.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Nevada Test Site, Pahute Mesa area","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -116.5717,\n 37\n ],\n [\n -116.5717,\n 37.3844\n ],\n [\n -116.1742,\n 37.3844\n ],\n [\n -116.1742,\n 37\n ],\n [\n -116.5717,\n 37\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a09e4b07f02db5fa83b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rogers, A. Rainfall and runoff data, collected for 9 years on a seasonal basis (April through September), were used to calibrate a rainfall-runoff model on each of 22 small basins. Long-term records of runoff volume and peak discharge were synthesized for these 22 basins. Flood volumes and flood peaks of specific recurrence intervals (2, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 years) were then related to basin characteristics with a high degree of correlation. Flood volumes were related to drainage area, maximum relief, and basin slope. Flood peaks were related to drainage area, maximum relief, basin slope, and channel slope. An investigation of ponding behind a highway embankment, with available storage capacity and with a culvert to allow outflow, has shown that the single fast-rising peak is most important in culvert design. Consequently, a dimensionless hydrograph defines the characteristic shape of flood hydrographs to be expected from small drainage basins in Wyoming. For design purposes, a peak and volume can be estimated from basin characteristics and used with the dimensionless hydrograph to produce a synthetic single-peak hydrograph. Incremental discharges of the hydrograph can be routed along a channel, where a highway fill and culvert are to be placed, to help determine the most economical size of culvert if embankment storage is to be considered. That amount represents a 10-percent increase over a similar water-use assessment in 1965, but a slight decrease from that of 1970. Total municipal water use, which includes municipally supplied industrial water, was 283 billion gallons. Industry used 442 billion gallons, of which 121 billion gallons was from municipal systems and 321 billion gallons was for self-suppled systems. Of the 604 billion gallons of water used for municipal and industrial supplies 145 billion gallons was ground water, 444 billion gallons was fresh surface water, and 14.8 billion gallons was saline surface water. A compilation of statewide industrial use as categorized by SIC (Lumber and Wood Products), SIC 28 (Chemicals and Allied Products), and SIC 20 (Food and Kindred Products)--accounted for about 65 percent of the total water used in industrial processes , In 1975, 5.79 million acre-feet of irrigation water (1,890 billion gallons) as applied to 1.52 million acres. This water was 95 percent surface water and 5 percent ground water. About 97 percent of the irrigation water was supplied in eastern Washington, to about 94 percent of the irrigated acreage in the State. The high-grade metasedimentary rocks give a whole-rock Rb-Sr age of 735 m.y. This late Precambrian age is believed to be the time of metamorphism. Orthogneisses, intrusive into the metasedimentary rocks, are probably also Precambrian in age; but many samples have had their ages disturbed by Cretaceous intrusions and thrusting.</p><p>Samples of Precambrian metagabbro are low in radioelements (U, Th, and K) typical of basalitc rocks.
