Synthetic-hydrologic techniques were used; and the 100-year flood stage was estimated to be at an elevation of 2,849.3 feet above mean sea level. Channel dimensions were measured at 59 sites in Lucerne Valley. Dranage area-discharge relations developed from channel-geometry data for sites nearby were used to estimate the discharge at 12 additional sites where channel geometry could not be measured. In order to compute the total volume discharge into the playa, the peak discharges were converted to volumes. From the Apple Valley report (Busby, 1975) the equation formulated from the relation between peak discharge and flood volume for the deserts of California was used to compute the flood volumes for routing into Lucerne Lake. This new anomaly is produced by the same source as h1(x,y) , but (1) is observed at a different elevation, (2) has a source with a different direction of magnetization, and/or (3) has a different direction of residual field. Case 1 is tantamount to upward or downward continuation. Cases 2 and 3 are 'reduction to the pole', if the new inclinations of both the magnetization and regional field are 90 degrees. REDUC3 is a filtering operation applied in the wave-number domain. It first Fourier transforms h1(x,y) , multiplies by the appropriate filter, and inverse Fourier transforms the result to obtain h2(x,y). Sediment yields were determined by using the transport-duration technique. It is estimated that 34,100 tons of suspended sediment are transported to the Lakes annually. Of this, 16,100 tons were from the Fox River and 14,400 tons from Nippersink Creek. Based on drainage-area ratios, it is estimated that the additional 3,600 tons were from Squaw Creek, a minor tributary. Samples were collected from the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet, Mississippi River at Southwest Pass, Mississippi River at New Orleans, Bayou Rigaud near Grand Isle, Barataria Bay and Waterway, Bayou La Carpe near Houma, Atchafalaya Bay (Ship Channel), Lower Atchafalaya River area, Intracoastal Waterway near Calumet, Intracoastal Waterway (Port Allen to Morgan City), Petite Anse area, and Calcasieu River and Ship Channel. These studies were conductd to determine potential environmental effects of dredging activities in the waterways. The Geological survey collected, treated, and analyzed 383 water and water-sediment mixture samples from 85 dredging sites and 142 postdredging samples (72 sites). Water samples were collected 100 yards upstream and downstream from the dredge effluent, from the disposal area, and from the effluent outfall during the dredge phase of the study; samples were collected at former dredge sites during the postdredging phase. Samples were analyzed for selected metals, pesticides, nutrients, and organic constituents. The analytical data are presented in tables. Sampling sites are shown on maps. The first of the present series of reports, Open File Report No. 76-609, covered the significant records of 1971 subsequent to the San Fernando earthquake. All references to reports of the Geological Survey, to most reports of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, and to most reports of the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor State and Territorial agencies released before January 1, 1977, are summarized.
