Analysis of 0.45-2.5 ?m field and laboratory spectra shows that iron-deficient opalites in the Cuprite mining district, Nevada, have an intense OH-absorption band near 2.2 ?m owing to their clay mineral and alunite contents and that this spectral feature is absent or weak in adjacent unaltered tuff and basalt. To evaluate the usefulness of this spectral feature for discriminating between altered and unaltered rocks, we generated color-ratio composite images from multispectral (0.46-2.36 ?m) aircraft data. The altered rocks in the district can be discriminated from unaltered rocks with few ambiguities; in addition, some effects of mineralogical zoning can be discriminated within the altered area. Only variations in amounts of limonite can be discerned in shorter wavelength aircraft data, Landsat MSS bands, and color aerial photographs.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77585","usgsCitation":"Abrams, M.J., Ashley, R.P., Rowan, L.C., Goetz, A.F., and Kahle, A., 1977, Use of imaging in the 0.46-2.36 [micrometers] spectral region for alteration mapping in the Cuprite mining district, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-585, ii, 19 leaves :ill., map ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77585.","productDescription":"ii, 19 leaves :ill., map ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":139947,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0585/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35093,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0585/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b01e4b07f02db69881a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Abrams, Michael J.","contributorId":15192,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Abrams","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156252,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ashley, R. Massive chalcocite-rich lodes at Kennecott and nearby deposits formed in the lower 110 meters of the Upper Triassic Chitistone Limestone. The Chitistone and superimposed Upper Triassic and Jurassic sedimentary rocks formed in a marine basin on and surrounded by the Nikolai Greenstone, a thick, extensive, largely subaerial succession of tholeiitic basalt with intrinsically high copper content. Lowermost 110 meters of the Chitistone contains three incomplete upward-shoaling lime mud cyclic sequences that each consist of shallow subtidal limestone grading upward to intertidal stromatolitic fine-grained dolomite. The youngest cycle contains well-developed sabkha features and dolomitic pisolitic and laminate crust caliches and underlies shallow-marine limestone. The ore deposits are related to the youngest supratidal cycle. This carbonate cycle represents a regional sabkha facies that developed between 90-110 meters above the Nikolai Greenstone. This facies, which contained abundant gypsum-anhydrite, was exposed to vadose weathering that leached much gypsum-anhydrite and developed a vuggy zone interbedded with porous dolomitic caliche zones. Subsequent marine deposition capped the porous zone with an impermeable seal. The youngest sabkha horizon served as a permeable conduit for the ore-forming solution and was instrumental in localizing the major Kennecott-type ores.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77217","usgsCitation":"Armstrong, A.K., and MacKevett, E., 1977, The Triassic Chitistone Limestone, Wrangell Mountains, Alaska: stressing detailed descriptions of sabkha facies and other rocks in lower parts of the Chitistone and their relations to Kennecott-type copper deposits: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-217, ii, 23 p. Modification of. the surface technique is accomplished by considering the additional mathematical terms required to express-the changes in the electrical potential and geometry caused by placing the source and receiver electrodes below the surface. This report presents a listing of a computer program to calculate the resistivity and induced polarization response from a three-dimensional body for buried electrode configurations. The program is designed to calculate the response for the following electrode configurations: (1) hole-to-surface array with a buried bipole source and a surface bipole receiver, (2) hole-to-surface array with a buried pole source and a surface bipole receiver, (3) hole-to-hole array with a buried, fixed pole source and a moving bipole receiver, (4) surface-to-hole array with a fixed pole source on the surface and a moving bipole receiver in the borehole, (5) hole-to-hole array with a buried, fixed bipole source and a buried, moving bipole receiver, (6) hole-to-hole array with a buried, moving bipole source and a buried, moving bipole receiver, and (7) single-hole, buried bipole-bipole array. Input and output examples are given for each of the arrays.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77153","usgsCitation":"Daniels, J.J., 1977, A computer program to calculate the resistivity and induced polarization response for a three-dimensional body in the presence of buried electrodes: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-153, 74 leaves :ill ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77153.","productDescription":"74 leaves :ill ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141985,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0153/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36081,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0153/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b27e4b07f02db6b093c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Daniels, Jeffrey J.","contributorId":87938,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Daniels","given":"Jeffrey","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157834,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Measurements of magnetic properties of samples collected in the valley and adjacent highlands give a basis for identifying the anomaly-producing rocks. Precambrian rocks of the crystalline basement have weakly induced magnetizations and produce anomalies having low magnetic intensities and low magnetic gradients. Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic intrusive rocks have moderately to strongly induced magnetizations. \r\n\r\nPrecambrian rocks produce prominent magnetic anomalies having higher amplitudes and higher gradients. The Quaternary basalt has a strong remanent magnetization of normal polarity and produces narrow anomalies having high-magnetic gradients. Interpretations include an increase in elevation to the top of buried Precambrian rock in the northern part of the valley, a large Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic intrusive near Alamogordo, and a southern extension of the intrusive rock exposed in the Jarilla Mountains. Evidence for the southern extension comes from a quantitative analysis of the magnetic anomalies..","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77258","usgsCitation":"Bath, G.D., 1977, Aeromagnetic maps with geologic interpretations for the Tularosa Valley, south-central New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-258, ii, 16 p. :ill., 18 maps (12 fold. in 2 envelopes) ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77258.","productDescription":"ii, 16 p. :ill., 18 maps (12 fold. in 2 envelopes) ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140550,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0258/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35351,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0258/plate-01.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35352,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0258/plate-02.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35353,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0258/plate-03.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35354,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0258/plate-04.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35355,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0258/plate-05.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35356,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0258/plate-06.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35357,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0258/plate-07.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35358,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0258/plate-08.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35359,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0258/plate-09.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35360,"rank":409,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0258/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35361,"rank":410,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0258/plate-11.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35362,"rank":411,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0258/plate-12.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35363,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0258/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae4e4b07f02db689e7d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bath, G. Based on 1:100,000 scale maps from high-altitude photography, basin land cover was extracted at the generalized Level I and the more detailed Level II classification categories. Level I land-use data summaries were prepared for 46 of the basins using the 1:250,000 scale maps derived from Landsat imagery. Land cover in the basins ranged from 93.9 percent urban at Little Falls Branch near Bethesda, Maryland, to 96.2 percent agricultural at Morgan Creek near Kennedyville, Maryland. Applying multiple regression techniques to a network of gaging stations monitoring runoff from 39 of the basins, it was demonstrated that land-use data from high-altitude photography provides an effective means of significantly improving estimates of streamflow. Forty streamflow-characteristics equations incorporating remotely sensed land-use information, were compared with a control set of equations using map derived land cover.
