These studies, initiated in 1974 in Colorado by the U.S. Geological Survey, have indicated that a new look at areas containing long dormant mines and prospects may well lead to the discovery of minable Precambrian sulfide deposits. The zinc, copper, and lead contents of ores investigated to date, supplemented by silver and gold contents, indicate that many long-forgotten deposits are minable in terms of grade. The deposits occur in Precambrian rocks metamorphosed to the lower amphibolite facies in one major region and to the upper amphibolite facies in other regions. Field studies have provided ample evidence indicating that the search for commercial tonnages can he facilitated by using newer concepts of economic geology regarding ore-host rock associations as prospecting guides and by using structural considerations aimed toward learning how metamorphism and folding have modified the shapes and distribution of the ore bodies. A newly recognized concept, originating from the current studies by the U.S. Geological Survey in Colorado, concerns the potential economic significance of gahnite, a zinc spinel. The field and laboratory data indicate that gahnite can be used by geologists as a prospector's guide to ore and can be considerd by mining engineers as a potential major ore mineral, contributing significant amounts of zinc to the sulfide ores in many of the deposits. Most of the listed reports and maps bear a 1976 imprint date; a few with a 1975 imprint date actually were not delivered until 1976. Also included are a few that I overlooked when I prepared a similar index of reports and maps issued in 1975.</p><p>Reports that deal with regional tectonic hypotheses, regional syntheses, Alaska as a whole, or with areas that can not be identified with a specific quadrangle are listed under Alaska - General, as are statistical presentations, indexes, and the like. Reports and maps that deal with offshore areas not within quadrangle boundaries are listed under Offshore Areas. The Alaska - General and Offshore Areas lists appear before the alphabetically arranged quadrangle listings.</p><p>This index is intended to bring up to date the other indexes of this series, which These factors will first be stated briefly, and then their influence on systems such as the new 5-day-tape seismic system will be examined in more detail. To fix ideas, we shall assume that the system consists of the following elements:\r\n\r\n1. A seismic sensor: usually a moving coil inertial seismometer with a period of about 1 second, a coil resistance of about 5000 ohms, and an effective motor constant of 1.0 V/cm/sec (across a 10K load terminating the seismometer sensitivity-and-damping-adjustment resistive network).\r\n\r\n2. A seismic amplifier/voltage controlled oscillator unit made up of the following components:\r\n\r\n   a) A fixed gain preamplifier with an input resistance of 10K and an internal noise level of 0.5 muVpp referred to the preamp input (0.1 Hz <= freq. <= 30 hz).\r\n\r\n   b) An adjustable gain (0 to 42 db in 6 db steps) intermediate amplifier\r\n\r\n   c) One or more fixed gain output amplifiers.\r\n\r\n   d) Two sections of 6 db/octave bandpass filter serving to couple the 3 amplifier stages together.\r\n\r\n   e) Voltage controlled oscillators for each output amplifier to produce modulated FM carriers for recording on separate tape tracks or modulated FM subcarriers for subsequent multiplexing and direct recording on tape in the California Network format.\r\n\r\n3. An analog magnetic tape recorder: e.g. the PI 5100 (15/80 ips recording in the FM mode or in the direct mode with the 'broad-band' variant-of the Cal Net multiplex system, or 15/16 ips recording in the direct mode with the standard Cal Net multiplex system), or the Sony TC-126 cassette recorder operating in the direct record mode with the standard Cal Net multiplex system.\r\n\r\n4. The regional stratigraphic and structural setting of the Pierre Shale in the northern Great Plains is summarized from subsurface data. \r\n\r\nGeologic attributes mapped and employed in the identification of areas warranting further evaluation are: depth to the base of the Pierre Shale, shale thickness, overburden thickness, lithology and mineralogy of the shale, and penetrations by oil and gas wells. Three areas emerge as most favorable; each may contain many potential disposal sites. These large geologic study areas are further described on the basis of general structural and seismic considerations and are compared with respect to topography and mineral and water resources. \r\n\r\nA large area in west-central South Dakota is recommended for extensive further study. A smaller area in northeastern Colorado also may warrant additional investigation. Preferred discharges for spawning were found statistically equivalent for chinook, pink and chum salmon. Regression equations developed for estimating discharges preferred by these species for spawning at other stream sites had standard errors of estimate of 40 percent where a relationship with toe-of-bank channel width was used, and 55 percent where basin drainage area was used. Similarly, equations for estimating the preferred discharge for spawning by sockeye and coho salmon (also statistically equivalent) had standard errors of 48 percent using channel width and 61 percent using drainage area. In general, the discharges preferred for spawning by salmon ranged in magnitude from about 0.3 to 11 times the median monthly mean discharges for September and October and about 0.1 to 6 times the median monthly means for November and December--the four months when spawning is greatest.</p><p>Stream discharges preferred by salmon for rearing were determined from relationships between discharge and wetted perimeter at the study reaches. Those discharges ranged from about 0.7 to 4 times the median monthly mean discharge for September, when low flows are usually most limiting on the rearing capacity of streams. Equations developed for estimating preferred rearing discharges at other stream sites had standard errors of 57 percent using channel width and 81 percent using drainage area.</p><p>Peak-unit spawnable area, or maximum area per unit length of channel that has preferred water depths and velocities, was similar for the five salmon species. Equations developed for estimating that area at other sites had standard errors of 27 percent using channel width and 47 percent using drainage area. Spatial distribution and types of erosional landforms, observed in the field and on time-sequential aerial photographs, measured sediment loads, and the lithologic heterogeneity of streambed materials indicated (1) that sediment discharges reflect a complex suite of natural and man-induced mass movement and fluvial erosion processes operating on a geologically heterogeneous, naturally unstable terrain, and (2) that although infrequent exceptionally intense storms control the timing and general magnitude of major erosion events, the loci, types, and amounts of erosion occurring during those events are substantially influence by land use. Erosional impacts of past timber harvest in the Redwood Creek basin reflect primarily the cumulative impact of many small erosion problems caused not so much by removal.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Recently modified riparian and aquatic environments reflect stream channel adjustments to recently increased water and sediment discharges, and are classified by the National Park Service as damaged resources because the modifications reflect, in part, unnatural causes.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Newly strengthened State regulations and cooperative review procedures result in proposed timber harvest plans being tailored to specific site conditions, as well as smaller, more dispersed harvest units and more sophisticated attempts at minimizing ground-surface disruption than those used in most previous timber harvesting in this basin. However, application of improved timber harvest technology alone will not assure protection of park resources. Much remaining intact residual commercial old-growth timber is on hillslopes that are steeper, wetter, more susceptible to landsliding, and more nearly adjacent to major stream channels than most of the previously harvested hillslopes in the lower Redwood Creek basin. Moreover, natural debris barriers along streams flowing through remaining old-growth forest have temporarily stored substantial quantities of sediment introduced into streams by recent storms and upstream land-use changes. Removal of merchantable timber from these barriers may destroy their stability and cause rapid release of stored sediment. Additionally, massive erosion in some recently harvested areas suggest that they are so erosionally sensitive that following rehabilitation and reforestation, they should not be reharvested. Thus, in order to maintain site productivity and to protect downstream park resources, some erosionally critical areas may have to be maintained as perpetual timber reserves dedicated to watershed protection.
