The objective of the program was to find sources of water to provide an improved supply for the reservoirs and pipelines of the Moen water system. The bulk of the report consists of records collected at the drilling sites during drilling and testing. Given for each test hole are a description of the drilling operation; a record of development of the hole; a record of each pumping test; and a log of the hole giving a summary description of rock units penetrated by the bit. For wells, there are records, where they are available, of the reaming of test holes to production-well diameter; data on casing, screens, gravel pack, and grout seal; and records of pumping tests. Transmissivities in the aquifer range from about 0.13 million to 11 million feet squared per day and ground-water velocities exceed 60 feet per day in some areas. The water-table gradient ranges from about 2 feet per mile to more than 60 feet per mile, and during a year the water table fluctuates on the order of 5 to 10 feet. For most of the aquifer the water table is between 40 and 400 feet below land surface. The aquifer is recharged and discharged at an average rate of about 1,320 cubic feet per second. \r\n\r\nWater is presently (1976) pumped from the aquifer at an average rate of about 239 cubic feet per second for domestic, industrial, and agricultural uses. Most of this is discharged to the Spokane River, lost to evapotranspiration, or applied to the land surface with little or no change in quality. However, about 34 cubic feet per second becomes waste water generated by domestic and industrial activities and is returned to the aquifer by percolation from cesspools and drain fields. \r\n\r\nThe quality of water in the aquifer is generally good. Less than one-half of 1 percent of the 3,300 analyses available exceeded the maximum contaminant levels specified in the National Interim Primary (or Proposed Secondary) Drinking Water Regulations (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 1975) for constituents which may be hazardous to health. Of the 6,300 analyses for constituents considered detrimental to the esthetic quality of water, about 1.4 percent have yielded values which exceeded the recommended levels. \r\n\r\nAlternative water sources for the area supplied by the aquifer are the Spokane and Little Spokane Rivers, lakes adjacent to the aquifer, and other aquifers. An additional 142,800 hectares (550 square miles or 352,900 acres) lying in part between the study area and the International Boundary and in part contiguous to the southwest of the study area were studied because of their importance to the evaluation of the study area itself. Unless otherwise specified, the term Study Area as used in this report includes both the formally designated study area and these contiguous areas. The general area is one of spectacular scenery, with fiords, forests, glacier-covered peaks to 2,470 m (8,095 feet) high, tidewater glaciers, icebergs, and some broad river valleys. No roads or maintained trails or permanent residents are present, and access is only by specially arranged water or air transport. Incoming solar and atmospheric radiation, windspeed and direction, water temperature, and wet- and dry-bulb air temperatures were recorded at 10-minute intervals at each end of the 26-km concrete-lined canal, while flow rates and stages were determined at hourly intervals for five locations. Although only daily averaged values are presented in this report, all information necessary for the use and interpretation of these data are presented. Windspeeds were minimum during the early morning hours and maximum during the late afternoon; however, they were variable spatially. On the other hand, incoming radiation and absolute vapor pressure varied little from point to point. The modelled area includes 1,500 square miles (3,885 square kilometres) of the New Jersey Coastal Plain and includes all the important centers of pumping in Monmouth, Burlington, and Ocean Counties from the Wenonah-Mount Laurel aquifer. The Wenonah Formation and Mount Laurel Sand of Late Cretaceous age are exposed in the western part of the New Jersey Coastal Plain along a belt trending northeast-southwest from Raritan Bay to Delaware Bay. The formations typically consist of poorly sorted silty to fine quartz sand, the Wenonah Formation, and a coarse clastic quartz sand unit, the Mount Laurel Sand. The Wenonah-Mount Laurel aquifer is composed of the sandy part of the geologic units. Transmissivity of the aquifer ranges from 360 square feet per day (33.4 square metres per day) to 1,430 square feet per day (132.8 square metres per day); the estimated hydraulic conductivity ranges from about 1.5 x 10<sup>-4</sup> feet per second (4.6 x 10<sup>-5</sup> metres per second) to 2.2 x 10<sup>-4</sup> feet per second (6.7 x 10<sup>-5</sup> metres per second); and the storage coefficient varies from about 1.5 x 10<sup>-5</sup> to 3.5 x 10<sup>-4</sup>. The annual average rate of withdrawal from the Wenonah-Mount Laurel aquifer in Monmouth, Burlington, and Ocean Counties increased from about 1 million gallons per day (44 cubic decimetres per second) in 1959 to slightly more than 2 million gallons per day (88 cubic decimetres per second) in 1970. Near the pumping centers in Monmouth County, the water level declined as much as 100 feet (30.5 metres) between 1959 and 1970. In the subjacent Englishtown aquifer underlying the lower confining unit (Marshalltown Formation), the annual average rate of withdrawal in all of Monmouth and Ocean Counties increased from 5.5 million gallons per day (241 cubic decimetres per second) in 1959 to 9.5 million gallons per day (416 cubic decimetres per second) in 1970. Water-level declines for the same period are as much as 140 feet (42.7 metres) near centers of pumping. The digital-simulation model was calibrated by matching computed declines in the Wenonah-Mount Laurel aquifer with historic water-level declines over the 12-year period, 1959-70. The results of the modelling show that recharge to the aquifer occurs as leakage from the upper confining unit owing to withdrawals from the aquifer. Of equal significance is the effect of water-level declines in the Englishtown aquifer, which generate leakage from the Wenonah-Mount Laurel aquifer through the lower confining unit, which in turn generates leakage (recharge) to the aquifer from the upper confining unit. The distribution pattern shows a concentration of occurrences in southeastern Alaska and particularly in the interior.</p><p>The only production of uranium in Alaska from any type of deposit has been from a hardrock deposit, that being the roughly 120,000 tons of ore averaging about one percent U<sub>3</sub>0<sub>8</sub> from the Ross-Adams mine near Bokan Mountain on Prince of Wales Island close to the southern tip of southeastern Alaska.</p><p>The Bokan Mountain uranium-thorium area includes about 71 mi<sup>2</sup> and is largely underlain by plutonic rocks (MacKevett, 1963). The plutonic rocks range from pyroxenite to peralkaline granite and syenite, but they consist chiefly of diorite, quartz diorite, granodiorite, and quartz monzonite. The peralkaline granite, a small pluton about 3 mi2 in area, is Late Triassic or Early Jurassic in age while the other plutonic rocks are early Paleozoic.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Major sources of ground water are the Gosport Sand and Lisbon Formation undifferentiated, the Miocene Series undifferentiated, and alluvium and low terrace deposits. The Miocene, the most productive source of ground water, will yield 0.5 to 1.0 mgd (million gallons per day) per well and is a potential source of larger supplies in most of the county. The quantity of potable water available is governed largely by geologic structures. Average flows of the Tombigbee and Mobile Rivers in the southeast corner of the county are 18,200 and 39,400 mgd. Average runoff originating in the county is about 1,100 mgd or 1 mgd per square mile. Water in aquifers tapped by wells generally contains less than 500 mg/l (milligrams per liter) dissolved solids. The water generally is soft to moderately hard. Water in streams is soft to moderately hard and low in dissolved solids. Estimated water use in 1966 was 43.5 mgd of which 10.9 mgd was ground water and 32.6 mgd was surface water. Lava flows underlie the entire basin, and unconsolidated sedimentary deposits overlie the lavas in the Camas Prairie-Glenwood area and in small areas elsewhere. A spring supplies water to much of the Camas Prairie-Glenwood area through a public system, so not many wells are used now. About 56 million gallons (110 acre-feet) of ground water was used in 1974. The unconsolidated deposits yield from 1 to 500 gallons per minute of water to wells, and the basalt can yield more than 100 gallons per minute and possibly several thousand gallons per minute to deep wells. The Helley-Smith bedload sampler has a hydraulic efficiency, the ratio of the mean velocity in the sampler nozzle to the mean ambient velocity, of approximately 1.54. Factors affecting the hydraulic efficiency include the geometry of the orifice and the open area of t he sampler bag .</p>\n<p>The exit-to-entrance area ratio of the nozzle is the major factor influencing hydraulic characteristics of the sampler. For the nozzles tested, the hydraulic efficiency rapidly increased to a maximum value as the exit-to-entrance area ratio increased . The hydraulic efficiency increased from 1.06 to 1.54 as the exit-entrance area ratio increased from 1.00 to 2.62. With an exit-entrance ratio greater than 2.62 but less than 3.22, this efficiency remained constant at 1.55.</p>\n<p>Filling the sample bag to 40 percent capacity with a sediment larger in diameter than the mesh size of the bag had no effect on the hydraulic efficiency.
