The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) samples sediments and collects data on the amount of sediment in selected waterways. The most pressing sediment-related problems are associated with environmental questions, such as the transport and fate of attached pollutants, effects of sediment on aquatic biota and their habitats, and effects on sediment transport from land-use changes. Current (2000) sediment issues require that sediment studies address multiple objectives in water-resources management (Koltun and others, 1997).\r\n\r\nTo support sediment research, the USGS operates laboratories for the analysis of the physical characteristics of sediment. Sediment laboratories producing data for the USGS have two principal functions: (1) the determination of suspended-sediment concentration in samples and (2) the determination of sand/fine separations. The reliability of these determinations and the usefulness of the data are dependent on the accuracy and reliability of the laboratory analyses (Guy, 1969).","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/fs03100","usgsCitation":"Gordon, J.D., and Newland, C., 2000, U.S. Geological Survey Quality-Assurance Project for Sediment Analysis: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 031-00, 4 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs03100.","productDescription":"4 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":305,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://bqs.usgs.gov/slqa/fact_sheet/fs031-00.pdf","size":"169","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":123025,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/fs_031_00.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a2be4b07f02db612c32","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gordon, John D. 0000-0001-8396-8524 jgordon@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8396-8524","contributorId":347,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gordon","given":"John","email":"jgordon@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":150310,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Newland, Carla","contributorId":55812,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Newland","given":"Carla","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":150311,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

These embayments are an important recreational resource and wildlife habitat; thus, maintaining their natural state is essential to their continued use. In recent decades, Long Pond and the adjacent Cranberry Pond have become hypereutrophic (overly enriched with nutrients) (Makarewicz and others, 1990) as a result of nitrogen and phosphorus transported to those waters by Northrup Creek from sources within the drainage basin.</p><p>In 1989, the Monroe County Department of Health and the Town of Greece, in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), began a water-quality-monitoring program on Northrup Creek near North Greece at a site of a gaging station about 5 mi north (downstream) of the Village of Spencerport and the Spencerport wastewater-treatment plant. The program included the collection of water samples from October 1989 through September 1998 for chemical analysis and the collection of streamflow data for use in calculating phosphorus loads at the site. This fact sheet addresses the issue of concentration and loads of phosphorus in Northrup Creek, the principal tributary to Long Pond.</p><p>Northrup Creek begins just south of the Village of Spencerport in Monroe County and flows northward into Long Pond. It drains a total of 23.5 mi2 in the towns of Ogden, Parma, and Greece (fig. 1). The drainage basin contains agricultural land, housing developments, and a small amount of urban land (table 1).</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/fs12899","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Monroe County Department of Health","usgsCitation":"Sherwood, D.A., 1999, Phosphorus loads entering Long Pond, a small embayment of Lake Ontario near Rochester, New York: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 128-99, 4 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs12899.","productDescription":"4 p.","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":117921,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1999/0128/coverthb.jpg"},{"id":861,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1999/0128/fs12899.pdf","text":"Report","size":"184 KB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"FS 128-99"}],"country":"United States","state":"New York","city":"Rochester","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -78.11279296875,\n              42.87596410238256\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.9921875,\n              42.87596410238256\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.9921875,\n              43.45291889355465\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.11279296875,\n              43.45291889355465\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.11279296875,\n              42.87596410238256\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","contact":"<p><a href=\"mailto:dc_ny@usgs.gov\" data-mce-href=\"mailto:dc_ny@usgs.gov\">Director</a>, <a href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/ny-water\" data-mce-href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/ny-water\">New York Water Science Center</a><br>U.S. Geological Survey<br>425 Jordan Road<br>Troy, NY 12180–8349</p>","tableOfContents":"<ul><li>Introduction</li><li>Phosphorus in Surface Waters</li><li>Phosphorus in Northrup Creek</li><li>Phosphorus in Long Pond</li><li>Conclusions</li><li>Selected References</li></ul>","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adee4b07f02db687468","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sherwood, Donald A.","contributorId":103267,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sherwood","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153441,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

During the summer months, crowds gather along the shores of Town Lake to watch as many as 1 million Mexican Free-Tail bats emerge from under the Congress Avenue bridge. Bankfull channel width was used as the primary indicator variable to assess pre- and post-dam channel change. Five 6-mile river reaches and four stream gages were used in the analysis. Results indicated that the overall channel response to the altered streamflow regime and sediment load introduced by the dam has been minor. Aside from some localized channel widening, there was little post-dam change in bankfull channel width. The lack of a pronounced post-dam channel response may be attributable to a substantial reduction in the magnitude of the post-dam annual peak flows in combination with the resistance to erosion of the bed and bank materials. Also, the channel may have been overwidened by a series of large floods that predated construction of the dam.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/fs08899","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Kansas Water Office","usgsCitation":"Juracek, K.E., 1999, Channel stability of the Neosho River downstream from John Redmond Dam, Kansas: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 088-99, 4 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs08899.","productDescription":"4 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":126437,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/fs_088_99.jpg"},{"id":360090,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1999/0088/fs19990088.pdf","text":"Report","size":"463 kB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"FS 1999-0088"}],"contact":"<p><a href=\"mailto:%20dc_ks@usgs.gov\" data-mce-href=\"mailto:%20dc_ks@usgs.gov\">Director</a>, <a href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/kswsc\" data-mce-href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/kswsc\">Kansas Water Science Center</a><br>U.S. Geological Survey<br>1217 Biltmore Drive<br>Lawrence, KS 66049</p>","tableOfContents":"<ul><li>Introduction</li><li>Description of Study Area</li><li>Methods</li><li>Results and Discussion</li><li>Downstream Effects of Dams on River Channels</li><li>Acknowledgments</li><li>References</li></ul>","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e4e4b07f02db5e661e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Juracek, Kyle E. 0000-0002-2102-8980 kjuracek@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2102-8980","contributorId":2022,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Juracek","given":"Kyle","email":"kjuracek@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":353,"text":"Kansas Water Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":150384,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The maps are developed by using computer mapping hardware and software called a geographic information system (GIS) to combine data layers such as land use, soils, and depth to water. Usually, ground-water vulnerability is determined by assigning point ratings to the individual data layers and then adding the point ratings together when those layers are combined into a vulnerability map. \nProbably the most widely used ground-water vulnerability mapping method is DRASTIC, named for the seven factors considered in the method: Depth to water, net Recharge, Aquifer media, Soil media, Topography, Impact of vadose zone media, and hydraulic Conductivity of the aquifer (Aller and others, 1985, p. iv). \nThe DRASTIC method has been used to develop ground-water vulnerability maps in many parts of the Nation; however, the effectiveness of the method has met with mixed success (Koterba and others, 1993, p. 513; U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 1993; Barbash and Resek, 1996; Rupert, 1997). DRASTIC maps usually are not calibrated to measured contaminant concentrations. The DRASTIC ground-water vulnerability mapping method was improved by calibrating the point rating scheme to measured nitrite plus nitrate as nitrogen (NO2+NO3–N) concentrations in ground water on the basis of statistical correlations between NO2+NO3–N concentrations and land use, soils, and depth to water (Rupert, 1997). This report describes the calibration method developed by Rupert and summarizes the improvements in results of this method over those of the uncalibrated DRASTIC method applied by Rupert and others (1991) in the eastern Snake River Plain, Idaho.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs06699","usgsCitation":"Rupert, M.G., 1999, Improvements to the DRASTIC ground-water vulnerability mapping method: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 066-99, 6 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs06699.","productDescription":"6 p.","costCenters":[{"id":343,"text":"Idaho Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":262312,"rank":800,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1999/0066/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":262313,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1999/0066/report-thumb.jpg"}],"scale":"100000","projection":"Albers equal-area","country":"United States","state":"Idaho;Nevada;Utah;Wyoming","otherGeospatial":"Snake River Basin;Eastern Snake River Plain","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -115.8484,41.0028 ], [ -115.8484,44.6046 ], [ -108.9974,44.6046 ], [ -108.9974,41.0028 ], [ -115.8484,41.0028 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fde4b07f02db5f5c80","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rupert, Michael G. mgrupert@usgs.gov","contributorId":1194,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rupert","given":"Michael","email":"mgrupert@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":191,"text":"Colorado Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":153390,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Single-point sampling with an automated sampler (autosampler) during storms was proposed in the upper part of the South-Central Texas NAWQA study unit, raising the question of whether property and constituent concentrations from automatically collected samples differ significantly from those in samples collected manually. Statistical (Wilcoxon signed-rank test) analyses of 3 to 16 paired concentrations for each of 26 properties and constituents from water samples collected using both methods at eight sites in the upper part of the study unit indicated that there were no significant differences in concentrations for dissolved constituents, other than calcium and organic carbon.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs17299","usgsCitation":"Ging, P.B., 1999, Water-quality assessment of south-central Texas — Comparison of water quality in surface-water samples collected manually and by automated samplers: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 172-99, HTML Document, https://doi.org/10.3133/fs17299.","productDescription":"HTML Document","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":123999,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/fs_172_99.bmp"},{"id":393467,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_23246.htm"},{"id":265,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/FS/Fs17299/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -100.4830,\n              29\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.728,\n              29\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.728,\n              30.217\n            ],\n            [\n              -100.4830,\n              30.217\n            ],\n            [\n              -100.4830,\n              29\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e6e4b07f02db5e7148","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ging, Patricia B. 0000-0001-5491-8448 pbging@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5491-8448","contributorId":1788,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ging","given":"Patricia","email":"pbging@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":150301,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The USGS study is part of a larger study known as the Seco Creek Water-Quality Demonstration Project, which is intended to demonstrate to urban and rural land and water users the potential to reduce transport of agricultural chemicals and sediment, improve groundwater and downstream surface-water quality, and improve the quality and abundance of vegetative cover. The Seco Creek watershed is approximately 50 miles (mi) west of San Antonio (fig. 1) and has a drainage area of approximately 255 square miles (mi2). This practice is not economical for those products that are in low demand. With the advent of newer technologies, high-speed, large-format printers have been coupled with innovative computer software to turn digital map data into a printed map. It is now possible to store and retrieve data from vast geospatial data bases and print a map on an as-needed basis; that is, print on demand, thereby eliminating the need to warehouse an inventory of paper maps for which there is low demand.  Using print-on-demand technology, the USGS is implementing map-on-demand (MOD) printing for certain infrequently requested maps. By providing MOD, the USGS can offer an alternative to traditional, large-volume printing and can improve its responsiveness to customers by giving them greater access to USGS scientific data in a format that otherwise might not be available.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/fs07499","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1999, USGS Map-on-Demand Printing: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 074-99, 1 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs07499.","productDescription":"1 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":123998,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1999/0074/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34224,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1999/0074/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a48e4b07f02db623347","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":528802,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Placed-Based Studies Program was established to provide sound science for resource managers in critical ecosystems such as South Florida (fig. 1). The program, which began in south Florida in 1995, provides relevant information, high-quality data, and models to support decisions for ecosystem restoration and management. The program applies multi- and interdisciplinary science to address regional and subregional environmental resources issues.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs06199","usgsCitation":"McPherson, B.F., Gerould, S., and Higer, A.L., 1999, USGS Science for Restoration of South Florida: The South Florida Ecosystem Program: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 061-99, 4 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs06199.","productDescription":"4 p.","costCenters":[{"id":27821,"text":"Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":124755,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/fs_061_99.jpg"},{"id":10432,"rank":100,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1999/0061/fs06199.pdf","text":"Report","size":"303 KB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"FS 061-99"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -82.6611328125,\n              24.926294766395593\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.0576171875,\n              24.926294766395593\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.0576171875,\n              27.371767300523047\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.6611328125,\n              27.371767300523047\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.6611328125,\n              24.926294766395593\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","contact":"<p><a href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/car-fl-water\" data-mce-href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/car-fl-water\">Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center</a><br>U.S. Geological Survey<br>3321 College Avenue<br>Davie, FL 33314</p><p><a href=\"../contact\" data-mce-href=\"../contact\">Contact Pubs Warehouse</a></p>","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f1e4b07f02db5ee386","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McPherson, Benjamin F.","contributorId":17965,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McPherson","given":"Benjamin","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153170,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gerould, Sarah sgerould@usgs.gov","contributorId":4551,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gerould","given":"Sarah","email":"sgerould@usgs.gov","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":153169,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Higer, Aaron L.","contributorId":52163,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Higer","given":"Aaron","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153171,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
