Water-surface profiles of the 25-year and 100-year floods and maps on which the 25-, 50-, and 100-year flood boundaries are delineated for streams in the Difficult Run basin are presented in this report.
The techniques used in the computation of the flood profiles and delineation of flood boundaries are presented, and specific hydraulic problems encountered within the study area are also included.

The mineralized areas occur in syenite and appear to be concentrated along the margins of alkaline dikes, with allanite tentatively identified as the principal mineral containing the uranium-, thorium-, and rare-earths. Samples contain as much as 0.15 percent U308 and 1.05 percent Th02, and over 2 percent rare-earth elements. These mineralized rocks are closely associated with alkaline dikes which are part of a dike swarm that crops out over at least 250 km2 (100 mi2). This large dike swarm is thus of considerable economic interest.
These uranium-, thorium-, and rare-earth-rich rocks occur near the west end of the western Alaska uranium-thorium province (West, 1953; Clark and others, 1975; Miller, 3976) and were found during a regional investigation of this province by the Geological Survey. The alkaline dikes were known from previous mapping by the two senior authors (Miller and others, 1972) to be anomalously radioactive. The mineralized areas described in this report were found while making a brief study of (1) alteration and/or mineralization associated with these dikes and (2) their relation to similar dikes and rocks which occur elsewhere in the province (Miller, 1972).

S. Geological Survey began a regional reconnaissance in 1974. The study area, which extends from Prince William Sound on the west to Yakutat Bay on the east, is in a region fraught with natural hazards. The tectonic history of the area suggests that future major earthquakes could pose serious hazards to installations on the continental shelf or along the coast of the Gulf of Alaska. The hazard may be either direct, by ground shaking or fault displacement, or indirect, through ground failure or generation of tsunami waves. Storm waves sometimes are responsible for ground failures, especially in areas of rapid accumulation of sediment.

Several areas, sampled in some detail, were selected for investigation because of their proximity to market, and accessibility to fuel and electricity. Muffle furnace tests show that the clay, claystone, and shale are natural bloaters at temperatures in the 1700° to 2200° F range, and do not require additives. The most desirable deposit, insofar as producing a strong aggregate is concerned, can be determined only by pilot-kiln testing and by crushing-strength tests made on concrete test cylinders. Reserves of suitable raw material are large in both the Chittagong and Dacca areas.

the inner edge of the coastal plain in northeastern Virginia","docAbstract":"Four en-echelon northeast-trending structures, including southeast-dipping monoclines and northwest-dipping high-angle reverse-faults, have been mapped along the inner edge of the Coastal Plain in northeastern Virginia -- an area generally considered to be undeformed. Although displacements are small (15to 60 m), the structures markedly affect the present distribution and thickness of Coastal Plain strata. Structure contour maps on Cretaceous and Paleocene lithostratigraphic units show that the amount of displacement on the structures increases downward, indicating recurrent movement. The major deformation occurred in the Cretaceous and middle(?) Tertiary but some movement in the latest Tertiary or Quaternary is possible. \r\n\r\nThe structures, herein named the Stafford fault system, extend for at least 56 kilometers parallel to the Fall Line and the northeast[trending reach of the Potomac estuary. A larger area that surrounds and includes the Alton EMRIA site proper contains estimated original identified coal resources of almost 309 million tons (281 megatonnes). Of these estimated resources in the EMRIA site proper, almost 27 million tons (25 megatonnes) are in beds more than 10 feet thick (3 metres); these beds are overlain by less-than 200 feet (60 metres) of overburden. In the larger area around and including the EMRIA site, about 88.5 million tons (81 megatonnes) are in beds more than ten feet (3 metres) thick with less than 200 feet (60 metres) of overburden. All the estimated resources are in the Smirl zone in the upper part of the Dakota Formation of Cretaceous age.
The coal has an apparent rank of subbituminous B, an average heating value of about 9,560 Btu, an average sulfur content of about 1.0 percent, and an average ash content of 7.2 percent. When compared with the average abundance of elements in the crust of the Earth as a whole, only selenium and boron were present in the Alton area coal samples in amounts an order of magnitude greater than the average crustal abundance. Beryllium, fluorine, nickel, zinc, and zirconium are all present in the Alton area samples in amounts that are about an order of magnitude less than the average crustal abundance.

Precipitation-evaporation balance and the water quality parameters have high factor loadings on the first principal component. Highest loadings on component 2 are for streamflow in and out of the lakes. Components 3 and 4 are characterized by geology and ground-water flow parameters. The drainage basin area/lake area ratio, the overland runoff parameter, has the highest loading on component 5.
