The objective of the hydrologic data-acquisition program is to collect surface-water quality and quantity data and ground-water level records. These data are needed to define predevelopment conditions and to monitor the effects of construction and operation of coal mines and waste-disposal areas. Data-acquisition activities related to coal development in Colorado have concentrated on the Yampa River basin. A description of the hydrologic data-acquisition activities, including parameters collected and frequency of collection, precedes the summaries of the three interpretive studies currently in progress. Each study summary consists of the project title, definition of the problem being studied, objective of the study, approach of the study, and when known, the schedule for completion of the study and proposed report products resulting from the study. This report contains maps showing location of observation wells and water-level changes from 1975 to 1976. Selection depended on infiltration area, location with respect to the ground-water divide and to planned transmission mains, tendency to retain storm runoff, underlying lithology, and depth to water table. The total maximum infiltration area of 14 selected basins is 60.2 acres, or 2,620,900 square feet (0.24 square kilometers). If 5-foot (1.5-meter) -high partitions were constructed in the basins to divide each into approximately equal halves and reclaimed water were applied in half of each basin to a depth of 5 feet (1.5 meters), using an application-rest cycle, a total area of 25.2 acres (0.10 square kilometers) would be available for supplemental recharge; the remaining infiltration area could be used for disposal of storm runoff. Emissions of dust and increased emanations of steam, other gases, and heat from the Sherman Crater area of the mountain focused attention on the possibility of hazardous events, including lava flows, pyroclastic eruptions, avalanches, and mudflows. However, the greatest undesirable natural results that have been observed after one year of the increased activity are an increase in local atmospheric pollution and a decrease in the quality of some local water resources, including Baker Lake. \r\n\r\nBaker Lake, a hydropower reservoir behind Upper Baker Dam, supports a valuable fishery resource and also is used for recreation. The lake's feedwater is from Baker River and many smaller streams, some of which, like Boulder Creek, drain parts of Mount Baker. Boulder Creek receives water from Sherman Crater, and its channel is a likely route for avalanches or mudflows that might originate in the crater area.\r\n\r\nBoulder Creek drains only about 5 percent of the total drainage area of Baker Lake, but during 1975 carried sizeable but variable loads of acid and dissolved minerals into the lake. Sulfurous gases and the fumarole dust from Sherman Crater are the main sources for these materials, which are brought into upper Boulder Creek by meltwater from the crater. In September 1973, before the increased volcanic activity, Boulder Creek near the lake had a pH of 6.0-6.6; after the increase the pH ranged as low as about 3.5. Most nearby streams had pH values near 7. On April 29, in Boulder Creek the dissolved sulfate concentration was 6 to 29 times greater than in nearby creeks or in Baker River; total iron was 18-53 times greater than in nearby creeks; and other major dissolved constituents generally 2 to 7 times greater than in the other streams. \r\n\r\nThe short-term effects on Baker Lake of the acidic, mineral-rich inflow depend mainly on: (1) the rate of flow and the character of Boulder Creek water at the time; (2) the relative rate of inflow of the feedwater from other streams; and (3) whether the reservoir is temperature-stratified (summer) or homothermal (winter). A distinct layer of Boulder Creek water was found in the lake in September 1975 extending at least 0.3 miles (.5 km) downreservoir. The greatest opportunity for water from Boulder Creek to persist as a layer and extend farthest before mixing with the other reservoir water is when Baker Lake is strongly stratified and Boulder Creek flow rate is large in relation to other feedwater. \r\n\r\nBaker Lake probably could assimilate indefinitely the acid loads measured during 1975, by dilution, chemical neutralization, and buffering of the acid-rich Boulder creek water. Minor elements found in Boulder Creek water included arsenic, selenium, and mercury; however, none of these would reach the limits recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for public water supplies unless their concentrations increased to several times the amounts found during this study. Under the prevailing conditions, acid-rich Boulder Creek water apparently cannot accumulate as a pool, or persist as a layer long enough to reach Upper Baker Dam and attack the concrete. However, even if the acid load from Boulder Creek does not greatly increase, occasional light fish mortalities may result near the mouth of the creek. Greater acid and mineral loads, resulting from further increases in volcanic activity or other possible causes, could be more harmful, especially to the fish. For each test, samples of drill cuttings were collect&middot;ed, borehole geophysical logs were run, and water samples were collected from specific zones.</p>\n<p>The Leopold Guerra No. 1 test hole penetrated sand and gravel :o 1,100 feet (335m), and logs and water samples indicated fresh ground water to that depth. Below 1,100 feet (335m), the material probably has low permeability. The Clay Evans No. 1 test penetrated sand, gravel, and clay to 555 feet (169m), sand and thin volcanic flows to about 1,250 feet (381 m), and volcanic flows and tuffs to 2,006 feet (611 m). Logs and water samples indicated fresh ground \\vater to about 1, 250 feet (381 m); below that, permeability is probably low. The Culberson County Airport test was drilled through sand, gravel, and clay to 1,145 feet (349m), conglomerate to 1,205 feet (367m), and the Lower Cretaceous Cox Sandstone to 1,306 feet (398m). Logs and water s~mples indicated fresh water in the alluvial fill and in the Cox Sandstone to about 1,265 feet (386m); below that depth, permeability is probably low. The Davis test was drilled through clay with some thin beds of sand and gravel containing fresh water to a depth of 2,012 feet (613 m).</p>\n<p>Borehole temperature data indicated above-nonnal gradients in the Guerra and Culberson County Airport tests. Large well yields of 25 gal/min or more can be obtained in the study area by locating future wells on SKYLAB lineaments rather than on lineaments detected on either high-altitude aerial photographs, LANDSAT images, or by random drilling. Larger savings might be achieved by locating wells on lineaments detected by both stereo viewing and projection. The test site is underlain by dense, fractured, flat-lying limestones. Soil cover averages 4 ft thick in the Central Basin and about 40 ft thick on the Eastern Highland rim. Groundwater occurs mostly in horizontal, sheetlike solution cavities, and the trends of these cavities are controlled by joints. Measurements of magnetic properties of samples collected along valley margins or from drill holes indicate that the anomaly-producing rocks are mostly Tertiary volcanic flows in Nevada and mostly Cretaceous-Tertiary intrusives in southern New Mexico. Aeromagnetic data were compiled as both observed and residual anomalies from surveys at various flight-line spacings and intervals from ground surface. Theoretical anomalies from known models were analyzed to recover data on depth, width, and magnetization of models and thereby establish reliability of methods used by certain investigators. These methods were then applied to measured anomalies to obtain information about the igneous rock structures that are buried beneath nonmagnetic valley alluvium.
