Channel cross-section data were provided by Lincoln County. Cross-section data for bridges and other structures were collected and compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey. Roughness coefficients ranged from 0.034 to 0.100. The 100-year flood was computed using standard methods, ranged from 5,170 to 4,120 cubic feet per second through the study reach, and was adjusted proportional to contributing drainage area. Water-surface elevations were determined by the standard step-backwater method. Flood boundaries were plotted on digital basemaps.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr00201","usgsCitation":"Miller, K.A., and Mason, J., 2000, Water-surface profile and flood boundaries for the computed 100-year flood, lower Salt River, Lincoln County, Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-201, 1 map :col. ;97 x 41 cm., on sheet 112 x 66 cm., folded in envelope 30 x 24 cm. +1 data sheet (110 x 66 cm.), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr00201.","productDescription":"1 map :col. ;97 x 41 cm., on sheet 112 x 66 cm., folded in envelope 30 x 24 cm. +1 data sheet (110 x 66 cm.)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":160026,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":2596,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/ofr00-201/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e2e4b07f02db5e4d47","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miller, Kirk A. 0000-0002-8141-2001 kmiller@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8141-2001","contributorId":3959,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"Kirk","email":"kmiller@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":5050,"text":"WY-MT Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":206035,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mason, John P.","contributorId":97539,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mason","given":"John P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":206036,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

This workshop was similar in nature to the first three meetings, held in June, 1997, in Lawrence, Kansas (Soller, 1997), in May, 1998, in Champaign, Illinois (Soller, 1998a), and in May, 1999, in Madison, Wisconsin (Soller, 1999). This year's meeting was hosted by the Kentucky Geological Survey, from May 17 to 20, 2000, on the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington. As in the previous meetings, the objective was to foster informal discussion and exchange of technical information. When, based on discussions at the workshop, an attendee adopts or modifies a newly learned technique, the workshop clearly has met that objective. Evidence of learning and cooperation among participating agencies continued to be a highlight of the DMT workshops (see example in Soller, 1998b, and various papers in this volume). \r\n\r\nThe meeting's general goal was to help move the state geological surveys and the USGS toward development of more cost-effective, flexible, and useful systems for digital mapping and geographic information systems (GIS) analysis. Through oral and poster presentations and special discussion sessions, emphasis was given to: 1) methods for creating and publishing map products (here, 'publishing' includes Web-based release); 2) continued development of the National Geologic Map Database; 3) progress toward building a standard geologic map data model; 4) field data-collection systems; and 5) map citation and authorship guidelines. Four representatives of the GIS hardware and software vendor community were invited to participate. \r\n\r\nThe four annual DMT workshops were coordinated by the AASG/USGS Data Capture Working Group, which was formed in August, 1996, to support the Association of American State Geologists and the USGS in their effort to build a National Geologic Map Database (see Soller and Berg, this volume, and http://ncgmp.usgs.gov/ngmdbproject/standards/datacapt/). The Working Group was formed because increased production efficiencies, standardization, and quality of digital map products were needed to help the Database, and the State and Federal geological surveys, provide more high-quality digital maps to the public. \r\n\r\n","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr2000325","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Soller, D.R., 2000, Digital mapping techniques '00, workshop proceedings - May 17-20, 2000, Lexington, Kentucky : U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-325, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr2000325.","temporalStart":"2000-05-17","temporalEnd":"2000-05-20","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":154495,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0325/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":9151,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/of00-325/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":52291,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0325/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a96e4b07f02db65aa09","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Soller, David R. 0000-0001-6177-8332 drsoller@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6177-8332","contributorId":2700,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Soller","given":"David","email":"drsoller@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":243,"text":"Eastern Geology and Paleoclimate Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":5061,"text":"National Cooperative Geologic Mapping and Landslide Hazards","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":189062,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The N aquifer is the major source of water in the 5,400-square-mile Black Mesa area, and the ground water occurs under confined and unconfined conditions. Monitoring activities include continuous and periodic measurements of (1) ground-water pumpage from the confined and unconfined parts of the aquifer, (2) ground-water levels in the confined and unconfined parts of the aquifer, (3) surface-water discharge, (4) flowmeter tests, and (5) ground-water and surface-water chemistry.</p> \n<br>\n<p>In 1998, ground-water withdrawals for industrial and municipal use totaled about 7,060 acre-feet, which is less than a 1 percent decrease from 1997. Pumpage from the confined part of the aquifer decreased by less than 1 percent to 5,470 acre-feet, and pumpage from the unconfined part of the aquifer increased by less than 1 percent to 1,590 acre-feet. Water-level declines in the confined part of the aquifer were recorded in 10 of 14 wells during 1998, and the median change from 1997 was a decline of 3.0 feet as opposed to a rise of 0.2 feet for the change from 1996 to 1997. Water-level declines in the unconfined part of the aquifer were recorded in 9 of 16 wells, and the median change from 1997 was 0.0 feet, which is the same as the median change from 1996 to 1997.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Of the 35 pumpage meters on municipal wells that were tested, the difference between metered and tested discharge ranged from +6.3 to -19.6 percent. The average difference was about -3.4 percent. Five of the meters exceeded the allowable difference (10 percent) and should be repaired or replaced.</p> \n<br>\n<p>The low-flow discharge at the Moenkopi streamflow-gaging station ranged from 2.6 to 4.7 cubic feet per second in 1998. Streamflow-discharge measurements also were made at Laguna Creek, Dinnebito Wash, and Polacca Wash during 1998. The low-flow discharge ranged from 0.41 to 5.1 cubic feet per second at Laguna Creek, 0.32 to 0.44 cubic feet per second at Dinnebito Wash, and 0.13 to 0.36 cubic feet per second at Polacca Wash. Discharge was measured at four springs. Discharge from Moenkopi School Spring decreased by about 1.1 gallons per minute from the measurement in 1997. Discharge from an unnamed spring near Dennehotso decreased by 4.6 gallons per minute from the measurement made in 1997. Discharge increased slightly at Burro Spring and decreased by about 1 gallon per minute at Pasture Canyon Spring. Regionally, long-term water-chemistry data for wells and springs have remained stable.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Tucson, AZ","doi":"10.3133/ofr0066","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Arizona Department of Water Resources and the Bureau of Indiana Affairs","usgsCitation":"Truini, M., Baum, B.M., Littin, G.R., and Shingoitewa-Honanie, G., 2000, Ground-water, surface-water, and water-chemistry data, Black Mesa area, northeastern Arizona: 1998: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-66, v, 38 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr0066.","productDescription":"v, 38 p.","numberOfPages":"44","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":287805,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":410882,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_25691.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":287804,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0066/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"100000","projection":"Lambert Conformal Conic projection","country":"United States","state":"Arizona","otherGeospatial":"Black Mesa area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -111.45,\n              35.583\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.45,\n              36.917\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.583,\n              36.917\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.583,\n              35.583\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.45,\n              35.583\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48cee4b07f02db5455f5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Truini, Margot mtruini@usgs.gov","contributorId":599,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Truini","given":"Margot","email":"mtruini@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":128,"text":"Arizona Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":185978,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Baum, Bradley M.","contributorId":26718,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Baum","given":"Bradley","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":185981,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Littin, Gregory R. grlittin@usgs.gov","contributorId":1732,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Littin","given":"Gregory","email":"grlittin@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":185979,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Shingoitewa-Honanie, Gayl","contributorId":21179,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Shingoitewa-Honanie","given":"Gayl","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":185980,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

This conclusion is based on chemical analyses of coal in the U.S. Geological Survey's National Coal Resources Data System (NCRDS; Bragg and others, 1994). According to NCRDS data, the average concentration of arsenic in Alabama coal (72 ppm) is three times higher than is the average for all U.S. coal (24 ppm). Of the U.S. coal analyses for arsenic that are at least 3 standard deviations above the mean, approximately 90% are from the coal fields of Alabama. Figure 1 contrasts the abundance of arsenic in coal of the Warrior field of Alabama (histogram C) with that of coal of the Powder River Basin, Wyoming (histogram A), and the Eastern Interior Province including the Illinois Basin and nearby areas (histogram B). The Warrior field is by far the largest in Alabama. The report consists of (1) a \r\nspatial database of fivedata layers (Quaternary deposits, quadrangle index, and \r\nthree ground effects layers) and two text layers (a labels and leaders layer \r\nfor Quaternary deposits and for ground effects), (2) two small-scale colored \r\nmaps (Quaternary deposits and liquefaction susceptibility), (3) a text \r\ndescribing the Quaternary map, liquefaction interpretation, and the ground \r\neffects compendium, and (4) the databse description pamphlet. The nine counties \r\nsurrounding San Francisco Bay straddle the San Andreas fault system, which \r\nexposes the region to serious earthquake hazard (Working Group on California \r\nEarthquake Probabilities, 1999). Much of the land adjacent to the Bay and the \r\nmajor rivers and streams is underlain by unconsolidated deposits that are \r\nparticularly vulnerable to earthquake shaking and liquefaction of \r\nwater-saturated granular sediment. This new map provides a modern and regionally\r\nconsistent treatment of Quaternary surficial deposits that builds on the \r\npioneering mapping of Helley and Lajoie (Helley and others, 1979) and such \r\nintervening work as Atwater (1982), Helley and others (1994), and Helley and \r\nGraymer (1997a and b). Like these earlier studies, the current mapping uses \r\ngeomorphic expression, pedogenic soils, and inferred depositional environments \r\nto define and distinguish the map units. In contrast to the twelve map units of\r\nHelley and Lajoie, however, this new map uses a complex stratigraphy of some \r\nforty units, which permits a more realistic portrayal of the Quaternary \r\ndepositional system. The two colored maps provide a regional summary of the new \r\nmapping at a scale of 1:275,000, a scale that is sufficient to show the general\r\ndistribution and relationships of the map units but cannot distinguish the more \r\ndetailed elements that are present in the database. The report is the product of\r\nyears of cooperative work by the USGS National Earthquake Hazards Reduction \r\nProgram (NEHRP) and National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program, William \r\nLettis and & Associates, Inc. (WLA) and, more recently, by the California \r\nDivision of Mines and Geology as well. An earlier version was submitted to the \r\nGeological Survey by WLA as a final report for a NEHRP grant (Knudsen and \r\nothers, 2000). The mapping has been carried out by WLA geologists under \r\ncontract to the NEHRP Earthquake Program (Grants #14-08-0001-G2129, \r\n1434-94-G-2499, 1434-HQ-97-GR-03121, and 99-HQ-GR-0095) and with other limited \r\nsupport from the County of Napa, and recently also by the California Division \r\nof Mines and Geology. The current map consists of this new mapping and \r\nrevisions of previous USGS mapping.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr00444","usgsCitation":"Knudsen, K.L., Sowers, J.M., Witter, R., Wentworth, C.M., Helley, E.J., Nicholson, R.S., Wright, H.M., and Brown, K.H., 2000, Preliminary maps of Quaternary deposits and liquefaction susceptibility, nine-county San Francisco Bay region, California: a digital database: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-444, online files, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr00444.","productDescription":"online files","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":160964,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":3027,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/of00-444/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ee4b07f02db66060f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Knudsen, Keith L. 0000-0003-2826-5812 kknudsen@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2826-5812","contributorId":3758,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Knudsen","given":"Keith","email":"kknudsen@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":205783,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sowers, Janet M.","contributorId":51318,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sowers","given":"Janet","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":205786,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Witter, Robert C. 0000-0002-1721-254X rwitter@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1721-254X","contributorId":4528,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Witter","given":"Robert C.","email":"rwitter@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":119,"text":"Alaska Science Center Geology Minerals","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":205785,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Wentworth, Carl M. 0000-0003-2569-569X cwent@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2569-569X","contributorId":1178,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wentworth","given":"Carl","email":"cwent@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":205781,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Helley, Edward J.","contributorId":106463,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Helley","given":"Edward","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":205788,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Nicholson, Robert S. rnichol@usgs.gov","contributorId":2283,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nicholson","given":"Robert","email":"rnichol@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[{"id":470,"text":"New Jersey Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":205782,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Wright, Heather M. 0000-0001-9013-507X hwright@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9013-507X","contributorId":3949,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wright","given":"Heather","email":"hwright@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":205784,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7},{"text":"Brown, Katherine H.","contributorId":74630,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brown","given":"Katherine","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":205787,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":8}]}}

S. Geological Survey (USGS) conducted a coal resource assessment of several\r\nareas in Armenia from 1997 to 1999. This report, which presents a prefeasibility study of the\r\neconomic and mining potential of one coal deposit found and studied by the USGS team, was\r\nprepared using all data available at the time of the study and the results of the USGS exploratory\r\nwork, including core drilling, trenching, coal quality analyses, and other ongoing field work.\r\nOn the basis of information currently available, it is the authors? opinion that a small surface\r\ncoal mine having about a 20-year life span could be developed in the Antaramut-Kurtan-Dzoragukh\r\ncoal field, specifically at the Dzoragukh site. The mining organization selected or created to\r\nestablish the mine will need to conduct necessary development drilling and other work to establish\r\nthe final feasibility study for the mine. The company will need to be entrepreneurial, profit oriented,\r\nand sensitive to the coal consumer; have an analytical management staff; and focus on employee\r\ntraining, safety, and protection of the environment. It is anticipated that any interested parties will be\r\nrequired to submit detailed mining plans to the appropriate Armenian Government agencies.\r\nFurther development work will be required to reach a final decision regarding the economic\r\nfeasibility of the mine. However, available information indicates that a small, economic surface\r\nmine can be developed at this locality. The small mine suggested is a typical surface-outcropstripping,\r\ncontour mining operation. In addition, auger mining is strongly suggested, because the\r\nrecovery of these low-cost mining reserves will help to ensure that the operation will be a viable,\r\neconomic enterprise. (Auger mining is a system in which large-diameter boreholes are placed\r\nhorizontally into the coal seam at the final highwall set as the economic limit for the surface mining\r\noperation). A special horizontal boring machine, which can be imported from Russia, is required\r\nfor auger mining. Although auger-mining coal reserves do exist, the necessary development work\r\nwill further verify the extent of these reserves and all of the other indicated reserves.\r\nThe following items are based on the detailed study reported in this publication.\r\nInitial investment.?Following an investment of US $85,000 over a 12-month period in\r\nmine development drilling and other activities, a decision must be taken regarding further\r\ninvestment in an ongoing mining operation. If the new data support the opening of the surface mine,\r\n__________________________\r\n1Consultant, 6024 Morning Dew Drive, Austin, TX 78749.\r\n2 U.S. Geological Survey, 956 National Center, Reston, VA 20192\r\n1\r\n2 MINABILITY AND ECONOMIC VIABILITY, ANTARAMUT-KURTAN-DZORAGUKH COAL FIELD\r\nthe $85,000 development cost is amortized over the first 10 years of mine production. If the new\r\ndata do not support the opening of the mine, the $85,000 is considered a business development\r\nexpense that may be written off against profits from other operations for income or other tax\r\npurposes or simply as a business loss.\r\nTotal capital required.?The equipment costs will reach a total of $900,500 which will be\r\namortized over a 7-year period to establish estimated coal mining costs. Estimated working capital\r\ncosts are $300,000, which will be borrowed.\r\nSurface mining reserves.?Approximately 840,200 metric tonnes of surface minable coal\r\nreserves at 9.3 m3 of overburden per metric tonne of minable coal is indicated. Recovery of the\r\nminable coal at 85 percent will yield 714,000 recoverable metric tonnes of marketable as-mined\r\ncoal.\r\nAuger mining reserves.?Auger-mining reserves of 576,000 metric tonnes are indicated.\r\nRecoverable auger-mining reserves of 202,000 metric tonnes (at 35-percent recovery) can be\r\nexpected. Auger-mining production will vary according to the hole size being used, but, in either\r\ncase, augering is a very profitable addition to the mining oper","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/b2178","usgsCitation":"Huber, D.W., and Pierce, B.S., 2000, Potential minability and economic viability of the Antaramut-Kurtan-Dzoragukh coal field, north-central Armenia; a prefeasibility study (VERSION 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 2178, 34 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/b2178.","productDescription":"34 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":167086,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":3393,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/b2178/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"edition":"VERSION 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad4e4b07f02db6830fb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Huber, Douglas W.","contributorId":84216,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Huber","given":"Douglas","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":213511,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Pierce, Brenda S. bpierce@usgs.gov","contributorId":268,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pierce","given":"Brenda","email":"bpierce@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":213510,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Their field observations were posted on paper copies of 15-minute quadrangle maps. In 1999, the USGS contracted with the Idaho Geological Survey to prepare a digital version of the Coeur d’Alene 1:100,000 quadrangle. To facilitate this work, the USGS obtained the field maps prepared by Griggs and others from the USGS Field Records Library in Denver, Colorado. The Idaho Geological Survey (IGS) digitized these maps and used them in their mapping program. The mapping focused on field checks to resolve problems in poorly known areas and in areas of disagreement between adjoining maps. The IGS is currently in the process of preparing a final digital spatial database for the Coeur d’Alene 1:100,000 quadrangle. However, there was immediate need for a digital version of the geologic map of the Coeur d’Alene 1:100,000 quadrangle and the data from the field sheets along with several other sources were assembled to produce this interim product.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>This interim product is the digital geologic map of the Coeur d’Alene 1:100,000 quadrangle, Idaho and Montana. The resulting digital geologic map (GIS) database can be queried in many ways to produce a variety of geologic maps. This report presents the results of a geologic mapping investigation of the Apache Canyon quadrangle that was carried out in 1997-1999 as part of the U.S. Geological Survey's Southern California Areal Mapping Project. This quadrangle was chosen for study because it is in an area of complex, incompletely understood Cenozoic stratigraphy and structure of potential importance for regional tectonic interpretations, particularly those involving the San Andreas fault located just northwest of the quadrangle and the Big Pine fault about 10 km to the south. In addition, the quadrangle is notable for its well-exposed sequences of folded Neogene nonmarine strata including the Caliente Formation of Miocene age from which previous workers have collected and described several biostratigraphically significant land-mammal fossil assemblages. During the present study, these strata were mapped in detail throughout the quadrangle to provide an improved framework for possible future paleontologic investigations. The Apache Canyon quadrangle is in the eastern part of the Cuyama 30-minute by 60-minute quadrangle and is largely part of an erosionally dissected terrain known as the Cuyama badlands at the east end of Cuyama Valley. Most of the Apache Canyon quadrangle consists of public lands in the Los Padres National Forest.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr00359","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the California Division of Mines and Geology","usgsCitation":"Stone, P., and Cossette, P., 2000, Geologic map and digital database of the Apache Canyon 7.5' quadrangle, Ventura and Kern counties, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-359, Pamphlet: PDF, 22 p.; Pamphlet: TXT; Metadata; Digital database; Map: 20.37 x 33.33 inches; Cross-section: 26.72 x 20.68 inches; Map: PostScript file; Cross-section: PostScript file, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr00359.","productDescription":"Pamphlet: PDF, 22 p.; Pamphlet: TXT; Metadata; Digital database; Map: 20.37 x 33.33 inches; Cross-section: 26.72 x 20.68 inches; Map: PostScript file; Cross-section: PostScript file","numberOfPages":"22","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":161052,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr00359.gif"},{"id":281694,"rank":2,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0359/apache1.ps.gz"},{"id":281695,"rank":3,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0359/apache2.ps"},{"id":110126,"rank":11,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_33762.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"33762"},{"id":2678,"rank":10,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0359/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":281692,"rank":9,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0359/pdf/of00-359.pdf"},{"id":281693,"rank":8,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0359/pdf/xsect00-359.pdf"},{"id":281690,"rank":7,"type":{"id":16,"text":"Metadata"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0359/apache_met.txt"},{"id":281688,"rank":6,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0359/pdf/apache_expl.pdf"},{"id":281689,"rank":5,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0359/apache_expl.txt"},{"id":281691,"rank":4,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0359/apache.tar.gz"}],"scale":"24000","projection":"Polyconic projection","country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Kern County, Ventura County","otherGeospatial":"Apache Canyon, Cuyama Valley, Los Padres National Forest","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -119.375,34.75 ], [ -119.375,34.875 ], [ -119.25,34.875 ], [ -119.25,34.75 ], [ -119.375,34.75 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a49d2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stone, Paul 0000-0002-1439-0156 pastone@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1439-0156","contributorId":273,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stone","given":"Paul","email":"pastone@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":205211,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cossette, P. The Sediment Transport Instrumentation Group (STG) at the WHCMSC has a long-standing commitment to providing scientists high quality oceanographic data published in a timely manner. To meet this commitment, STG has created this software to aid personnel in processing and reviewing data as well as evaluating hardware for signs of instrument malfunction. The output data format for the data is network Common Data Form (netCDF), which meets USGS publication standards. Typically, ADCP data are recorded in beam coordinates. This conforms to the USGS philosophy to post-process rather than internally process data. By preserving the original data quality indicators as well as the initial data set, data can be evaluated and reprocessed for different types of analyses. Beam coordinate data are desirable for internal and surface wave experiments, for example. All the code in this software package is intended to run using the MATLAB program available from The Mathworks, Inc. As such, it is platform independent and can be adapted by the USGS and others for specialized experiments with non-standard requirements. The High Plains aquifer extends from south of 32 degrees to almost 44 degrees north latitude and from 96 degrees 30 minutes to 104 degrees west longitude.  The aquifer underlies about 174,000 square miles in parts of Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming.\r\n\r\nThis data set was based on 10,085 water-level measurements, 49 stream elevations, (March 1997) and 10,036 water-level elevations from wells (1,370 from 1996 and 8,666 from 1997) and the base of aquifer value for each measurement location. Geographic information systems (GIS) facilitate interpretation and integration of spatial data. The geographic information and data compiled for the conterminous United States during the National Highway Runoff Water-Quality Data and Methodology Synthesis project is described in this document, which also includes information on the structure, file types, and the geographic information in the data files. This 'geodata' directory contains two subdirectories, labeled 'gisdata' and 'gisimage.' The 'gisdata' directory contains ArcInfo coverages, ArcInfo export files, shapefiles (used in ArcView), Spatial Data Transfer Standard Topological Vector Profile format files, and meta files in subdirectories organized by file type. The 'gisimage' directory contains the GIS data in common image-file formats. The spatial geodata includes two rain-zone region maps and a map of national ecosystems originally published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; regional estimates of mean annual streamflow, and water hardness published by the Federal Highway Administration; and mean monthly temperature, mean annual precipitation, and mean monthly snowfall modified from data published by the National Climatic Data Center and made available to the public by the Oregon Climate Service at Oregon State University. These GIS files were compiled for qualitative spatial analysis of available data on a national and(or) regional scale and therefore should be considered as qualitative representations, not precise geographic location information.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey ;Branch of Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr2000432","issn":"0094-9140","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration","usgsCitation":"Smieszek, T., and Granato, G., 2000, Geographic Information for Analysis of Highway Runoff-Quality Data on a National or Regional Scale in the Conterminous United States: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-432, v, 15 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr2000432.","productDescription":"v, 15 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":377,"text":"Massachusetts-Rhode Island Water Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":155073,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":9391,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/ofr00-432/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a9195","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smieszek, Tomas W.","contributorId":23575,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smieszek","given":"Tomas W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":192133,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Granato, Gregory E. 0000-0002-2561-9913 ggranato@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2561-9913","contributorId":1692,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Granato","given":"Gregory E.","email":"ggranato@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":466,"text":"New England Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":192132,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The system was purchased subject to it meeting the requirements, criteria and tests described in Appendix A. In early 2000, Nanometrics began delivery of various components of the system, such as the hub and remote satellite dish and mounting hardware, and the NCSN installed and assembled most equipment in advance of the arrival of Nanometrics engineers to facilitate the configuration of the system. The hub was installed in its permanent location, but for logistical reasons the \"remote\" satellite hardware was initially configured at the NCSN for testing. During the first week of April Nanometrics engineers came to Menlo Park to configure the system and train NCSN staff. The two dishes were aligned with the satellite, and the system was fully operational in 2 days with little problem. Nanometrics engineers spent the remaining 3 days providing hands-on training to NCSN staff in hardware/software operation, configuration, and maintenance. During the second week of April 2000, NCSN staff moved the entire remote system of digitizers, dish assembly, and mounting hardware to Mammoth Lakes, California. The system was reinstalled at the Mammoth Lakes water treatment plant and communications successfully reestablished with the hub via the satellite on 14 April 2000. The system has been in continuous operation since then. This report reviews the performance of the Libra system for the three-month period 20 April 2000 through 20 July 2000. The purpose of the report is to assess whether the system passed the acceptance tests described in Appendix A. We examine all data gaps reported by NCSN \"gap list\" software and discuss their cause.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr00330","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Oppenheimer, D.H., 2000, Three-month performance evaluation of the Nanometrics, Inc., Libra Satellite Seismograph System in the northern California Seismic Network: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-330, 12 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr00330.","productDescription":"12 p.","numberOfPages":"12","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":156755,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr00330.jpg"},{"id":1754,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0330/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":281593,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0330/pdf/of00-330.pdf"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a53e4b07f02db62b85f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Oppenheimer, David H. oppen@usgs.gov","contributorId":1112,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Oppenheimer","given":"David","email":"oppen@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":191309,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Data include pH, alkalinity, and concentrations of sulfate and metals (arsenic [As], cadmium [Cd], copper [Cu], iron [Fe], mercury [Hg], manganese [Mn], lead [Pb], antimony [Sb], and zinc [Zn]) in porewater and sulfur (S), carbon (C), and metal contents of associated solids. The results indicate that the pH of the porewater in all of the sediments is less than the pH of the Coeur d'Alene River. Dissolved concentrations of Mn and Fe are elevated in all of the porewater and levels of sulfate in porewater are below detection limits in almost all marsh sediments and in levee banks at the 2 sites furthest downstream. These observations suggest that levee bank and marsh sediments are suboxic or anoxic below the surface. Concentrations of dissolved Cd are greater in the Coeur d'Alene River than in porewater, while concentrations of As are greater in the porewater relative to the Coeur d'Alene River. Some concentrations of Cu, Pb, Sb, and Zn in porewater are lower, while others are higher, than dissolved concentrations in the Coeur d'Alene River. In addition, leaching experiments (i.e., Standard Elutriate Tests [SET]) were done in the laboratory to evaluate potential water quality impacts resulting from the addition of oxygen and water to these sediments. The intent of the experiments was to simulate how metal concentrations in water may be affected during dredging of contaminated sediments in the lower Coeur d'Alene River valley. The results indicate that there are releases of protons, sulfate, As, Mn, Pb, Sb, and Zn from the majority of levee bank and marsh sediments during leaching by Coeur d'Alene River water. At a water to sediment ratio of 4 to 1, most values of pH and dissolved concentrations of Cd, Fe, Pb, and Zn in the leaching solutions exceed the freshwater aquatic life standards for water of a hardness of 100 mg CaCOa/L.
