The data analysis given here is brief because of time limitations imposed at the meeting. A more detailed analysis of the data (both geological and geophysical) will be given in subsequent publications.</p><p>Our oral presentation was preceded by one given by Jeffrey Daniels and James Scott entitled \"Borehole Investigations of South Texas Uranium Deposits.\" Statements made in their presentation that are pertinent to this report are as follows: (1) a Tertiary sandstone is the host for the South Texas uranium occurrence, (2) the roll-front geometry is similar to those found in Wyoming, and (3) the roll-front does not occur at a visually obvious change from reduced to oxidized environments. A careful comparison of the IP (induced polarization) borehole logs and lithology revealed the following general points: (1) the largest IP response logged in the boreholes occurred at the uranium roll-front, and (2) the IP response can be correlated with percentage pyrite and with variations in the percentage and type of clay present.</p><p>The IP measurements reported here were made with a time-domain Huntec IP receiver. The transmitted wave-form had a two-second on-and-off period. Four windows were measured during the off-time. The second window, M2, which is given here, has a window duration of 130 milliseconds from 50 to 130 milliseconds. IP coupling is inferred not to be a serious problem in the survey data reported here, because the variations in M measurements are the same as those seen for the2 window of longest delay and length.</p><p>The data presented herein are part of a broad data set which the U.S. Geological Survey has gathered on surface geophysical methods. Other people who have been involved in the data collection, interpretation, and presentation are John Cady, David Campbell, Ralph Corken, Richard Meyer, Louis O'Connor, Tommas Nash, and James Scott.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr7673","usgsCitation":"Smith, B., and Daniels, J., 1976, Induced-polarization surveys applied to exploration for roll-front uranium deposits: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-73, 21 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7673.","productDescription":"21 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":499021,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0073/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":145518,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0073/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f3e4b07f02db5ef5b8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smith, Bruce 0000-0002-1643-2997","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1643-2997","contributorId":43350,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"Bruce","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162720,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Daniels, J.J.","contributorId":75929,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Daniels","given":"J.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162721,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Uranium-vanadium occurs in the Salt Wash Member of the Jurassic Morrison Formation. \r\n\r\nChemical and petrographic analyses were used to determine elemental variation and diagenetic aspects across the orebody. Vanadium is concentrated in the dark clay matrix, which constitutes visible ore. Uranium content is greater above the vanadium zone. Calcium, carbonate carbon, and lead show greater than fifty-fold increase across the ore zone, whereas copper and organic carbon show only a several-fold increase. Large molybdenum concentrations are present in and above the tabular layer, and large selenium concentrations occur below the uranium zone within the richest vanadium zone. Iron is enriched in the vanadium horizon. Chromium is depleted from above the ore and strongly enriched below. Elements that vary directly with the vanadium content include magnesium, iron, selenium, zirconium, strontium, titanium, lead, boron, yttrium, and scandium. \r\n\r\nThe diagenetic sequence is as follows: (1) formation of secondary quartz overgrowths as cement; (2) infilling and lining of remaining pores with amber opaline material; (3) formation of vanadium-rich clay matrix, which has replaced overgrowths as well as quartz grains; (4) replacement of overgrowths and detrital grains by calcite; (5) infilling of pores with barite and the introduction of pyrite and marcasite.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr76287","usgsCitation":"Brooks, R.A., and Campbell, J.A., 1976, Preliminary investigation of the elemental variation and diagenesis of a tabular uranium deposit, La Sal Mine, San Juan County, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-287, ii, 30 p. :ill., maps ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76287.","productDescription":"ii, 30 p. :ill., maps ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":146714,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0287/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":41198,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0287/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab1e4b07f02db66eaf1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Brooks, Robert A.","contributorId":60645,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brooks","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":166715,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Campbell, John A.","contributorId":67089,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Campbell","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":166716,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The solutions percolate toward the Snake River Plain aquifer (135 m below) through interlayered basalts and unconsolidated sediments and an extensive zone of ground water perched on a sedimentary layer about 40 m beneath the ponds. A three-segment numerical model was developed to simulate the system, including effects of convection, hydrodynamic dispersion, radioactive decay, and adsorption. Simulated hydraulics and solute migration patterns for all segments agree adequately with the available field data. The model can be used to project subsurface distributions of waste solutes under a variety of assumed conditions for the future. Although chloride and tritium reached the aquifer several years ago, the model analysis suggests that the more easily sorbed solutes, such as cesium-137 and strontium-90, would not reach the aquifer in detectable concentrations within 150 years for the conditions assumed. In addition to the commodities produced, at least 5 others--beryllium, molybdenum, tin, phosphorite, and petroleum, occur in amounts sufficient to warrant exploration. The other districts have been explored, but no production has been recorded. \r\n\r\nTotal value-when-sold of production recorded through 1969 was nearly $91 million; actual production was considerably greater, especially if sand and gravel, barite, and other nonmetallic products before 1953 are included. In value of metals produced, the five highest districts are Mountain City ($26 million), Tuscarora ($11 million), Jarbidge ($10 million), Aura ($6 million), and Railroad (nearly $5 million). The Rio Tinto copper mine in the Mountain City district yielded $21 million. Of the 17 districts that produced nonmetallic minerals, Bootstrap .is the largest producer, containing the Rossi mine, one of the two largest barite mines in the United States. \r\n\r\nMost of /he metals produced name from veins and replacement deposits in limestone or dolomite near granitic stocks; exceptions are manganese and mercury, which are not associated with known or inferred stocks; mercury is further excepted because it occurs in volcanic rocks, as do a few deposits of the major metals. The largest deposit--the Rio Tinto lode--was a combination of fissure filling and replacement along a bedding plane shear zone 150 ft wide and 1,200 ft long in carbonaceous shale of the Valmy Formation; this deposit is apparently older than the Mountain City stock and its mineralization may be related to Paleozoic mafic volcanism later than a major thrust fault, inferred to underlie the area at a depth of about 5,000 ft. \r\n\r\nMost of the nonmetallic minerals mined were sedimentary bedded deposits, but mica was mined from pegmatite deposits, and turquoise from both placer and hydrothermal deposits.\r\n\r\nThe largest known reserves of metals (1973) are of porphyry copper in the Dolly Varden district and gold in the Bootstrap district. Reserves of barite also are presumed to be large.\r\n\r\nThe greatest potential for future production of metals, notably copper and gold, appears to be in the known districts or extensions of them and peripheral to deposits that are related to known or concealed plutons and thrust faults. Potential resources in deposits too low in grade to be worked profitably at the present time include all commodities that have been produced and, in addition, known, deposits of beryllium, molybdenum, tin, and phosphorite. Speculative resources in undiscovered deposits may reasonably be predicted to include all known commodities as well as others that are unsuspected. Petroleum may yet be produced from the Elko Formation and geothermal energy from the Ruby Valley and Elko areas.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr7656","usgsCitation":"Smith, R.M., 1976, Mineral resources of Elko County, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-56, 201 leaves :maps ;29 cm.; (194 p., 1 sheet - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7656.","productDescription":"201 leaves :maps ;29 cm.; (194 p., 1 sheet - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":95005,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0056/plate-1.pdf","size":"12013","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":95006,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0056/plate-2.pdf","size":"8301","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":144012,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0056/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39021,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0056/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a1ae4b07f02db606432","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smith, Roscoe Maurice","contributorId":78745,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"Roscoe","email":"","middleInitial":"Maurice","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162781,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

A total of about 1,700 sediment, rock, and water samples were collected from 10 observation wells drilled in and near the burial ground of Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, formerly the National Reactor Testing Station (NRTS). Within the burial ground area, the subsurface rocks are composed principally of basalt. Wind- and water-deposited sediments occur at the surface and in beds between the thicker basalt zones. Two principal sediment beds occur at about 110 feet and 240 feet below the land surface. The average thickness of the surficial sedimentary layer is about 15 feet while that of the two principal subsurface layers is 13 and 14 feet, respectively. The water table in the aquifer beneath the burial ground is at a depth of about 580 feet. Fission, activation, and transuranic elements were detected in some of the samples from the 110- and 240-foot sedimentary layers. Such records are essential in planning water developments and managing water resources. Their value can be enhanced if the records are analyzed statistically. This report presents statistics on the flow of streams in the North and South Platte River basins. Major irrigation projects have been constructed in the basins since gaging of streams was begun, and the records of stream discharge at gaging stations show the effects on streamflow of those developments. Analyses of the ratios of the stable isotopes of carbon, sulfur, hydrogen, and oxygen were inconclusive as to the source of the salt water, but were consistent with the hypothesis that the ship channel is the source. Estimates of the amount of vertical leakage indicate that the quantity of salt water encroaching from the surface or near surface to the Chicot aquifer, including leakage from the Houston Ship Channel, is not sufficient to appreciably alter the inorganic chemical quality of the ground water in any large segment of the aquifer. The effects of other contaminants, particularly organic substances, are not known.
