In this area field crews of the U.S. Geological Survey have established 95 gravity observations in conjunction with geologic studies being made as part of the Nevada tectonic project. The principal gravity reference base station was Tonopah J, located at the Nye County Airport, 8 miles (12.9 km) east of Tonopah, Nev. The purpose of the study was to determine the relation of ground water to surface water, to estimate the quantity of ground water that moves to the Duchesne River, and to assess the probable effect of increased ground-water withdrawal on streamflow.</p><p>The primary source of water for the study area is precipitation on the highlands adjacent to and north of the area and on the valley itself. Discharge from the area is mainly by flow in the Duchesne River. Adjacent to and within the valley, ground water and surface water are intimately related, and they can interchange in several ways due to both natural and manmade conditions.</p><p>Aquifers in the upper Duchesne River valley range from Paleozoic to Quaternary in age. The consolidated aquifers receive recharge from highland precipitation and streamflow, and probably from interformational transfer of water. The consolidated rocks discharge water through springs and by interformational transfer of water to the valley fill of Quaternary age.</p><p>The valley fill, which is composed mainly of outwash and related glacial debris, constitutes the main ground-water reservoir in the valley. The fill is, in general, highly permeable and transmits water rapidly. It is recharged by a small amount of underflow beneath the Duchesne River and its tributaries, by intermittent precipitation directly on the fill, by interformational movement of ground water from the adjacent consolidated rocks, and by seepage of surface water from streams, canals, and irrigated fields. The ground water in the fill is unconfined. The volume of ground water stored in the fill and theoretically available by gravity drainage is a minimum of 40,000 acre-feet (50 cubic hectometres); this volume fluctuates by a maximum of 10 percent annually.</p><p>Ground water is discharged from the valley fill by wells and springs, by evapotranspiration, and by seepage into the Duchesne River. The discharge from wells and springs used for domestic, stock, public, and irrigation purposes in 1974 was about 2 cubic feet per second (0.06 cubic metres per second). The discharge by evapotranspiration was about 4 cubic feet per second (0.1 cubic metre per second). Average lateral hydraulic conductivity for material in the screened interval of the test well is 216 feet per day. Specific yield of the material at water-table depth is about 0.10. Anisotropy, or ratio of lateral hydraulic conductivity to vertical hydraulic conductivity, is between 1 and 5 for the uppermost 60 feet of saturated material, but is probably much higher at greater depths. Calculation of drawdown after pumping 200 days at 1 million gallons per day indicates lateral intrusion of saline water from the sea would not reach the well and that the area of ground-water contribution would be sufficient to intercept an amount of average annual recharge equal to pumpage. Using the previously determined aquifer constants and the maximum drawdown after 200 days of pumping at 1 million gallons per day, it was determined that a stable upconing adjustment of the fresh water/saline-water interface would occur below the pumping well, and saline water would not reach the well through vertical intrusion. The reach, 3.1 miles (5 kilometers) in length, wan immediately upstream from a previously established bedload sampling station. Nineteen channel cross sections were sounded at regular intervals during the spring-runoff period. Four stage recorders provided continuous records of water-surface elevations. Samples of bed material at most of the cross sections were obtained prior to high water. Streamflow and sediment-discharge measurements were collected at four of the sections.</p><p>The physiography and hydrology of the contributing watershed, the study reach, and the equipment and techniques used in data collection are described briefly. The basin is entirely within the Yakima Indian Reservation and is bordered and drained on the east by the Yakima River.</p><p>Average annual precipitation ranges from about 35 inches in the western upland to less than 10 inches in the eastern lowland. This amounts to a yearly total of about 562,000 acre-feet, most of which falls in the upland. Much of the precipitation falls as snow, and the streamflow from the upland reflects this fact, having a high sustained runoff during the snowmelt months of April, May, and June.</p><p>In 1973 about 176,000 acre-feet of water was carried by canals for irrigation of about 19,000 acres in the lowland; of this quantity, about 173,000 acre-feet was imported from the adjoining Toppenish Creek basin. This high application rate of about 9.25 acre-feet of water per acre is largely responsible for severe waterlogging problems in many parts of the lowland. Also contributing to the problem are the fine-grained sedimentary deposits that generally overlie the alluvial sand and gravel aquifers in the lowland and retard downward percolation of applied water into those units. In other areas the upward discharge from aquifers in the underlying Yakima Basalt of the Columbia River Basalt Group contributes to waterlogging. Relieving artesiar heads by pumping, combined with reduced application and improved drainage, could alleviate the waterlogging, and free water for use in the irrigation of presently nonirrigated parts of the basin.</p><p>Young volcanic rocks (basalt) in the southwestern, upland part of the basin appear to contain significant ground-water reservoirs. Aerial surveys were made along about 500 miles (800 km) of flight line, and 67 resistivity soundings were made along 110 miles (180 km) of profile. The surveys did not indicate the presence of any large bodies of fresh ground water, but several areas may be underlain by small to moderate amounts of fresh to slightly saline water.</p><p>The material underlying the flood plain of the Rio Grande is predominantly clay or sand of low resistivity. Along a band on the mesa next to and parallel to the flood plain, more resistive material composed partly of deposits of an ancient river channel extends to depths of about 400 to 1,700 feet (120 to 520 m). Locally, the lower part of this more resistive material is saturated with fresh to slightly saline water. The largest body of fresh to slightly saline ground water detected in this study is between Fabens and Tornillo, Texas, mostly in the sandhill area between the flood plain and the mesa.
