The study reach is in southern Dane County extending from part of the shoreline of Lake Waubesa downstream through Lake Kegonsa to the Dane-Rock County line. Specifically the parts of the shoreline of Lake Waubesa included are those in and south of section 8, T. 6 N., R. 10 E. on the west shore and the south half of section 3, , T. 7 N., R. 10 E. on the east shore. (See figure 2.) The reach is 21 river miles (31 km) long.</p>\n<p>The Wisconsin Legislature has enacted flood&ndash;plain&ndash;Zoning legislation (1965) to encourage economic use of flood plains and to minimize flood losses. This act gave counties, cities, and villages the responsibility of enacting, administering, and enforcing reasonable and effective flood-plain regulations.</p>\n<p>This report is a sequel to earlier reports by Lawrence and Holmstrom (1971) and Holmstrom and Lawrence (1971). The earlier reports provided much of the same information, but the scale of the maps defining limits of flooding was much smaller. This report , using Orthophotographs at a scale of 1 in - 100 ft., provides greater detail.</p>\n<p>The report is based on conditions existing in 1971. The study was made by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, and the U.S. Soil Conservation Service, Alexandria, La. Included are records of 332 wells and test holes, water levels in 324 wells, and drillers ' logs of 316 wells and test holes. Most of the data were collected between July 1968 and June 1975. Well locations are shown. All altitudes given in the tables are referenced to mean sea level. These include seven sites from the old (~ 2500 m.y.) Precambrian shield of Western Australia, seventeen from the younger (~ 600- 2000 m.y.) Precambrian rocks of South Australia, the Northern Territory, and Queensland, and twenty within the eastern Paleozoic and younger rocks. Thirty of the sites are located where no previous heat-flow data existed, and the remainder provide significant extensions or refinements of areas previously studied. Where the holes studied penetrated the crystalline basement rocks, or where the latter rocks were exposed within a few kilometers of the holes, the upper crustal radiogenic heat production has been estimated based on gamma-ray spectrometric determinations of U, Th, and K abundances. Three heat-flow provinces are recognized in Australia based on the linear relation (q = q* + DA<sub>0</sub> ) between heat flow q and surface radioactivity A<sub>0</sub>. New data from the Western Australian shield support earlier studies showing that heat flow is low to normal with values ranging from 0.7 to 1.2 hfu and with the majority of values less than 1.0 hfu, and the parameters q* = 0.63 hfu and 0 = 4.5 km determined previously were confirmed. Heat flow in the Proterozoic shield of central Australia is quite variable, with values ranging between about l and 3 hfu. This variability is attributed mainly to variations in near-surface crustal radioactivity. The parameters of the heat-flow line are q* = 0.64 hfu and 0 = 11.1 km and moderately high temperatures are predicted for the lower crust and upper mantle. Previous suggestions of a band of l ow- to - normal heat flow near the coast in eastern Australia were confirmed in some areas, but the zone is interrupted in at least one region (the Sydney Basin), where heat flow is about 2.0 hfu over a large area. The reduced heat flow, q*, in the Paleozoic intrusive rocks of eastern Australia varies from about 0.8 to 2.0 hfu . This variability might be related to thermal transients associated with Late Tertiary and younger volcanic and tectonic activity, even though the relation between heat-flow values and the age of volcanism is not a simple one. Parts of the high heat-flow area in the southeast might be exploitable for geothermal energy.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Most sets of crossbeds are a few feet thick and several feet wide and tens of feet long. Trough sets are dominant, but planar sets are also common. Dip directions of crossbeds show great variation, though westerly dips are sparse. The averages (resultant vectors) of crossbedding dip-directions measured at 33 localities do not show significant differences according to their geographic or stratigraphic distribution. The average dip-direction of the 292 crossbeds measured is N. 85? E. The data suggest that the depositional slope was easterly in Fairfax County throughout the time of deposition of the Potomac Formation. By 1850 A.D. the tidal marshes of the estuary, including those of the Sacramento - San Joaquin Delta, covered an area nearly twice as large as the area of open water. Nearly 95 percent of these marshes have been diked or filled during the past 125 years. Species distributions along leveled transects at six tidal marshes indicate that elevation and water salinity are the principal ecological factors that-control the distribution of seed plants in the remaining natural tidal marshes of the northern San Francisco Bay estuary. Marsh surfaces situated near mean tide level are populated by robust monocotyledons (e.g., Spartina foliosa, Scirpus californicus), whereas surfaces situated near high-tide levels support dicotyledons and a few small monocotyledonous species (e.g., Salicornia virginica, Distichlis spicata). These discharges and wetted perimeters were determined by measurements at 54 study reaches on 18 streams representative in size and location of those used by steelhead for spawning and rearing.</p><p>Using multiple-regression techniques and the measured discharges and wetted perimeters, equations were developed for estimating the spawning and rearing discharges and the wetted perimeter for rearing at unmeasured stream sites. The independent parameters used were drainage area, mean altitude of the basin, reach altitude, reach slope, and average width of reach at toe of bank.
