The natural surface of the Earth is composed of a diversified combination of surface cover types, and geologists must understand the characteristics of surface cover types to successfully evaluate remotely-sensed data. In some areas landscape surface cover changes throughout the year, and analysis of imagery acquired at different times of year can yield additional geological information. Integration of different scales of analysis allows landscape features to be effectively interpreted. Interpretation of the static elements displayed on imagery is referred to as an image interpretation. Image interpretation is dependent upon: (1) the geologist's understanding of the fundamental aspects of image formation, and (2.) his ability to detect, delineate, and classify image radiometric data; recognize radiometric patterns; and identify landscape surface characteristics as expressed on imagery. A geologic interpretation integrates surface characteristics of the landscape with subsurface geologic relationships. Development of a geologic interpretation from imagery is dependent upon: (1) the geologist's ability to interpret geomorphic processes from their static surface expression as landscape characteristics on imagery, (2) his ability to conceptualize the dynamic processes responsible for the evolution 6f interpreted geologic relationships (his ability to develop geologic models). The integration of geologic remote-sensing techniques in subsurface analysis is illustrated by development of an exploration model for ground water in the Tucson area of Arizona, and by the development of an exploration model for mineralization in southwest Idaho.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr76402","usgsCitation":"Taranik, J.V., and Trautwein, C.M., 1976, Integration of geological remote-sensing techniques in subsurface analysis: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-402, viii, 80 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76402.","productDescription":"viii, 80 p.","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":45142,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0402/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":150453,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0402/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dbe4b07f02db5e0f85","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Taranik, James V.","contributorId":67514,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Taranik","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"V.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":172425,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Trautwein, Charles M. trautwein@usgs.gov","contributorId":2861,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Trautwein","given":"Charles","email":"trautwein@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":172424,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Isotope and geochemical data for the Bruneau-Grand View area suggest that recharge to the area may not be entirely from sources within the local surface-drainage area, but possibly from the areas of higher altitude of the Bruneau River drainage to the southeast; or that the hot water that wells and springs are discharging is water that was recharged at a time when the regional climate was much colder than the present climate. Recharge to the Weiser area is probably from areas of higher altitude to the north and northeast of the local drainage area However, local precipitation does influence both the chemical and isotopic compositions of the waters in each area.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr76166","usgsCitation":"Rightmire, C.T., Young, H., and Whitehead, R., 1976, Geothermal investigations in Idaho, Part IV, Isotopic and geochemical analyses of water from the Bruneau-Grand View and Weiser areas, Southwest Idaho: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-166, 53 leaves :ill., maps ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76166.","productDescription":"53 leaves :ill., maps ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":146925,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0166/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":44616,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0166/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67afc7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rightmire, Craig T.","contributorId":7714,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rightmire","given":"Craig","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":171495,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Young, H.W.","contributorId":68278,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Young","given":"H.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":171497,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Whitehead, R.L.","contributorId":34891,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Whitehead","given":"R.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":171496,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

By use of a finite-difference method of calculation, formulas were devised to calculate changes in basin storage at various time intervals from the start of storm inflow, with and without addition of reclaimed water. The North Massapequa storm-water basin was the prototype design used to test several methods of water application. Calculations using various infiltration rates, storm durations, and storm-return periods indicate that several methods of applying reclaimed water to storm-water basins on Long Island would be feasible. The water supply is obtained from a well field in east Orange County. Many of the easternmost wells in that well field yield salty water (chloride concentration greater than 250 milligrams per liter). The interface between the fresh and salty water in the west part of the well field occurs at a depth of about 1,400 feet. An upward hydraulic gradient exists between the the lower (salty) zones and the upper, or pumped zones of the Floridan aquifer in the west part of the well field. Secondary artesian aquifers in the well-field area are relatively high-yielding but are of limited areal extent. However, they are suitable as a source of water for supplemental supply or for artificially recharging the Floridan aquifer. Fresh water was transferred by siphon from a secondary artesian aquifer to the Floridan aquifer at 90 gallons per minute. Artificial recharge and recovery experiments show that it is feasible to retrieve fresh water stored in salty zones of the Floridan aquifer. A preliminary version was written in Sept., 1975.(von Huene and others, 1975) in support of the Call for Nominations, Proposed OCS Oil and Gas Lease Sale #46. Since that time, there has been a substantial increase in information as the result of a two-month examination of recent studies of the adjacent Gulf of Alaska Tertiary Province and a preliminary interpretation of some publicly available common depth point (CDP) seismic reflection data recently acquired by the U.S. Geological Survey. The main source of geologic and geophysical data used in the preparation of this summary is published and unpublished information of the U.S. Geological Survey (Plafker and others, 1975,Bruns and Plafker, 1975; Carlson, Bruns and Molnia, 1975; Carlson and Molnia, 1975; Core, Mattick, and Bayer, 1975; Molnia and Carlson, 1975 a &amp; b; von Huene and others, 1975). Prior to 1975, data were gathered mainly for purposes other than for assessment of oil and gas resources and of the environmental consequences of exploration and development. A systematic survey for such an assessment is planned for the summer of 1976 and, therefore, this summary is tentative. Although the major problems and regional setting are discussed in this paper, a great deal more specific data and interpretations will begin to become available in about one year.</p><p>In this summary we consider the geology of a broad region on the continental shelf off the Kodiak group of islands and the Kenai Peninsula. We will concentrate on the area proposed for leasing in Sale #46. The area lies between about 56°N latitude and 60°N latitude (Fig. 1), and it measures approximately 660 km x 100 km. Geological reconnaissance was made in the Departamentos (counties) of Florida, Tacuarembo, Rivera, and Cerro Largo from January 5-15, 1962.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The Valentines iron deposit is located about 261 km north of Montevideo, Uruguay. Exploration of the deposit was started about three years ago by Ingeniero Juan H. Caorsi and Q.I. Don Juan C. Goni of the Instituto Geologico del Uruguay. The deposit contains an estimated 23,500,000 tons of hematite-martite-magnetite iron ore that averages about 40 percent Fe. The ore occurs in highly metamorphosed itabirite of Precambrian age that is surrounded by coarse-grained metasomatized granite. The itabirite formation is about 50 meters thick and has been encountered down dip at a depth of 240 meters below its surface exposure. A few granite and amphibolite sills, commonly less than 1 m wide, lie within the itabirite. The deposit has been separated into three distinct parts along strike by small right-lateral slip faults or normal faults; the northern Apretado body, the central Aurora body, and the southern Esabella body. The orebody lies on the western flank of a gently plunging NNW-trending anticline. Mining of the ore and its transportation by railroad to Montevideo would present no special difficulties, but shipping by small barges should be investigated.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Geological reconnaissance in the Tacuarembo and Rivera Departamentos</p>\n<p>Three mineralized areas lie in an area near the town of Minas de Corrales in the Departamento de Rivera; they are the Cerro Amelia, the Cerro de Papagayo, and the Cerro Iman. The Cerro Amelia is composed of small bands of iron-rich rock separated by an amphibolitic or mafic rock. Selective mining would be necessary to extract the 31,000 tons per meter of depth of iron-rich rock that ranges from 15 to 40 percent metallic iron.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The Cerro de Papagayo district contains many small, rich deposits of ferruginous manganese ore. The ratio of Mn to Fe varies widely within each small deposit as well as from deposit to deposit. Some ferruginous manganese ore contains 50-55 percent manganese dioxide. Although there are many thousands of tons of ore in the district, small-scale mining operations are imperative. One deposit, the Cerro Avestuz manganese mine, was visited. The manganese ore body lies within contorted highly metamorphosed itabirite that contains both hard low grade and soft high grade ferruginous manganese ores estimated to average 40 percent Mn. About 38,000 tons of manganese ore is present in this deposit.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The Cerro Iman is a large block of itabirite that contains about 40 percent Fe. The grade is variable and probably runs from less than 35 percent Fe to more than 50 percent Fe. No exploration has been done on this deposit.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>It is recommended that the Cerro de Iman area be geologically mapped in detail, and that a geological reconnaissance be made of the area that is between the Cuchilla de Corrales and the Cuchilla de Areycua/Cuchilla del Cerro Pelado area.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr76466","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Instituto Geologico del Uruguay and the United States Army Mission to Uruguay under the auspices of the Government of Uruguay and the Agency for International Development, U.S. Department of State","usgsCitation":"Wallace, R.M., 1976, Geological reconnaissance of some Uruguayan iron and manganese deposits in 1962: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-466, Report: 27 p.; Plate: 13.84 x 8.48 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76466.","productDescription":"Report: 27 p.; Plate: 13.84 x 8.48 inches","numberOfPages":"32","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":288248,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":288246,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0466/plate-1.pdf"},{"id":288247,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0466/report.pdf"}],"country":"Uruguay","state":"Cerro Largo;Florida;Rivera;Tacuarembo","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -56.6635,-34.4053 ], [ -56.6635,-30.8466 ], [ -53.1771,-30.8466 ], [ -53.1771,-34.4053 ], [ -56.6635,-34.4053 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adee4b07f02db68748d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wallace, Roberts Manning","contributorId":22372,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wallace","given":"Roberts","email":"","middleInitial":"Manning","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":172817,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Water samples should be taken using a US DH-48 water sampler across the stream channel and should be filtered and acidified in situ. Stream sediments should be taken as a composite sample up and across the axis of the channel. Only sediment fractions less than 90 ?m (170 mesh) should be analyzed for uranium. The elements As, Ca, Al, B, Mg, K, and Na exhibit a positive correlation with uranium in surface waters, while a much larger suite of elements exhibit a positive correlation with uranium in stream sediments: K, Mn, Mg, Ti, Ca, Al, Fe, Pb, Cr, Y, Zr, Li, Zn, Th, and As. Analyses have revealed that anomalies detected in either the dissolved or suspended fractions of water, or the stream sediments, are frequently not reflected in the other two; hence, all three should be sampled and analyzed.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr7677","usgsCitation":"Wenrich-Verbeek, K.J., 1976, Water and stream-sediment sampling techniques for use in uranium exploration: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-77, [1], 30 leaves :ill., map ;29 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7677.","productDescription":"[1], 30 leaves :ill., map ;29 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":148531,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0077/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":45474,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0077/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45475,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0077/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a08e4b07f02db5fa347","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wenrich-Verbeek, Karen J.","contributorId":101662,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wenrich-Verbeek","given":"Karen","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":172954,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Diagenetic alteration of framework grains throughout the stratigraphic sequence has produced widespread zeolite cement or phyllosilicate grain coatings and pseudomatrix. Multiple deformation and deep burial of the older Tertiary sequence--the Orca Group, the shale of Haydon Peak, and the Kulthieth and Tokun Formations--caused extensive alteration and grain interpenetration, resulting in low porosity values. Less intense deformation and intermediate depth of burial of the younger Tertiary sequence--the Katalla, Poul Creek, Redwood, and Yakataga Formations--has resulted in a greater range in textural properties. Most sandstone samples in the younger Tertiary sequence are poorly sorted, tightly packed, and have strongly appressed framework grains, but some are less tightly packed and contain less matrix. Soft and mineralogically unstable framework grains have undergone considerable alteration, reducing pore space even in the youngest rocks. \r\n\r\nMeasurements of porosity, permeability, grain density, and sonic velocity of outcrop samples of the younger Tertiary sequence indicate a modest up-section improvement in sandstone reservoir characteristics. Nonetheless porosity and permeability values typically are below 16 percent and 15 millidarcies respectively and grain densities are consistently high, about 2.7 gm/cc. Low permeability and porosity values, and high grain densities and sonic velocities appear to be typical of most outcrop areas throughout the onshore Gulf of Alaska Tertiary Province.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr76198","usgsCitation":"Winkler, G., McLean, H., and Plafker, G., 1976, Textural and mineralogical study of sandstones from the onshore Gulf of Alaska Tertiary Province, southern Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-198, iii, 48 leaves :ill., map ;27 cm.; (51 p., 6 sheets - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76198.","productDescription":"iii, 48 leaves :ill., map ;27 cm.; (51 p., 6 sheets - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":150179,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0198/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":45597,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0198/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad5e4b07f02db683737","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Winkler, Gary R.","contributorId":75513,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Winkler","given":"Gary R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":173125,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"McLean, Hugh","contributorId":73977,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McLean","given":"Hugh","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":173124,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Plafker, George","contributorId":3920,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Plafker","given":"George","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":173123,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
