The Yakataga Formation, with an aggregate outcrop thickness of about 5,000 m, is characterized by variable amounts of distinctive neritic marine tillite-like diamictite and laminated siltstone containing dropstones interpreted as ice-rafted glacial debris. The lithology, sedimentary structures and molluscan fauna of the formation suggest that active tidal glaciers or an ice shelf were present along the landward margin of the basin possibly beginning in early or early middle Miocene time. Dropstone distribution in outcrop sections indicates that glaciers reached tidewater intermittently during the Miocene and were almost continuously present throughout the Pliocene and much of the Pleistocene. The Wilcox is divided by a persistent shale wedge. Contrasting delta systems described as high-constructive and high-destructive exist in the divisions. Merged high constructive deltas characterize the lower, while the upper Wilcox was deposited as a high destructive system. Maximum sand development occurs downdip parallel to regional depositional strike in the delta facies. Further downdip, shales replace sands, and sediments are (abnormally high pressured) geopressured. \r\n\r\nThe structure o5 the updip port[on is that of a stable shelf. Downdip, greatly thickened beds are cut by large faults. These faults and the resultant deposits are recognized as being the result of a previously unnamed phenomenon--here termed hydrothermal tectonism. Field investigations and laboratory physical-properties tests of coal and overburden rocks suggest that several factors influence highwall stability. Some of these factors are rebound of overconsolidated rocks, desiccation, water, orientation and spacing of fractures, and strength and deformation properties. Factors of safety for a typical highwall in the study area (calculated by the finite-element method) may be less than 1.0 when open fractures are present and the highwall has degraded. Although it is concluded that most open-pit mines in the Fort Union Formation within the study area have generally stable highwalls, these highwalls do deteriorate and become progressively less stable. Because of this, postmining failures are common and could be critical if mining were delayed and then resumed after a period of several months. \r\n\r\nThe second part of the investigation will utilize field measurements of rock-mass properties and instrumentation of actively mined highwalls to obtain data for comparison with the results of the initial investigation. The history of ground-water quality in the Lompoc area shows little change in the Lompoc upland and the Lompoc terrace, but an increase in the concentration of dissolved solids in the main water-bearing zone beneath the Lompoc plain. Most water pumped from this zone is used for irrigation and contains dissolved solids in concentrations ranging from less than 500 to more than 3,000 milligrams per litre. The average concentration is about 1,500 milligrams per litre. The total hardness is more than 1,000 milligrams per litre, and most of this water contains more than 750 milligrams per litre sulfate; the most abundant ions are calcium, sodium, sulfate, and bicarbonate.</p><p>Changes in ground-water quality seem largely related to irrigation return, to inflow of native water of poor quality, to discharge of sewage effluent, and, in the shallow water-bearing zone, perhaps to the oxidation of sulfide minerals.</p><p>Average annual recharge to ground water in the plain from the Santa Ynez River, local tributaries, underflow, and infiltration of rain is about 14,000 acre-ft (acre-feet) or 17 hm<sup>3</sup> (cubic hectometres).</p><p>Discharge of ground water from the Lompoc plain is by pumping, evapotranspiration, streamflow, and underflow to the ocean. Pumpage during 1972 was about 23,000 acre-ft (28.4 hm<sup>3</sup>), less than half of which probably returned to the main water-bearing zone.</p><p>Ground water in storage is about 220,000 acre-ft (270 hm<sup>3</sup>) in the Lompoc plain area, more than 100,000 acre-ft (120 hm<sup>3</sup>) in the Lompoc terrace area, and more than 400,000 acre-ft (490 hm<sup>3</sup>) in the Lompoc upland area. Berg from July 2 to July 20, 1975 in the part of the Craig (CR) 1:250,000-scale quadrangle northeast of Clarence Strait (figs. 1 and 2). It contains edited and revised observations on structure, lithology, mineralogy, metamorphism, and mineral occurrences. Areas covered by the observations include southern Etolin and adjacent islands and part of Cleveland Peninsula, including 5 sites in the Ketchikan (KC) quadrangle immediately adjacent to the Craig quadrangle (fig. 2). A preliminary geologic map incorporating the data has been released (Berg and others, 1976). The printout includes the latitude-longitude coordinates of each field station, so that the user can locate the observations within a few metres on larger-scale topographic maps than figure 2.</p><p>The purpose of this report is to provide an organized file of detailed field observations to supplement and amplify a companion geologic map. The combined reports thus constitute a complete record of available information to serve as wide a range of potential users as possible.</p><p>The information in this report was transferred from geologic fieldsheets (fig. 3) to computer storage using the method described by Hudson and others (1975). A.
