Gravity data indicate that a deep basin (>5 km) underlies the northern part of the San Fernando Valley; this deep basin is required to explain the lowest gravity values over the Mission Hills thrust fault. Gravity modeling, constrained by well data and density information, shows that the basin may reach a thickness of 8 km, coinciding with the upper termination of the 1994 Northridge earthquake mainshock rupture. The basin is deeper than previous estimates by 2 to 4 km; this estimate is the result of high densities for the gravels of the Pliocene-Pleisocene Saugus Formation. The geometry of the southern margin of the deep basin is not well-constrained by the gravity data, but may dip to the south. Recently acquired seismic data along the LARSE (Los Angeles Regional Seismic Experiment) II profile may provide constraints to determine the location and attitude of the basin edge. One survey was done in the spring when the reservoir pool was at high elevation; the other survey was in the winter when the reservoir pool was low.</p>\n<p>The maximum measured velocity was 2.4 feet per second for the spring survey and 1.9 feet per second for the winter survey. The maximum measured velocities occurred in the immediate vicinity of the spillway tower containing the discharge-release gates. Velocity-field magnitudes diminished rapidly with distance from the tower. Beyond an estimated 40 feet from the tower, velocity magnitudes were below 0.5 feet per second.</p>\n<p>For the spring and winter surveys, data were collected along four transects that were parallel to the face of the spillway tower. The transects were at the following approximate distances from the spillway tower: 900, 600, and 300 feet and as close to the tower as practical. For the spring and winter surveys, velocity-contour plots were produced for the transects closest to the tower. Plots were not made for the transects at 900-, 600-, and 300-foot intervals because velocities were negligible at these distances.</p>\n<p>An acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) mounted on a boat was used to collect velocity and depth data and to compute positions of the velocity and depth data relative to the boat track. A global positioning system (GPS) was used to collect earth-referenced position data, and a GPS base station receiver was used to improve the accuracy of the earth-referenced position data. The earth-referenced position data were used to transform the ADCP-computed positions (which were relative to boat tracks) to positions referenced to a point on the spillway In 1996, we recounted transects surveyed in 1982 and used the same analysis procedure to compare 1982 and 1996 population estimates. The 1996 population estimate was 55,721 ± 3,846 SE (48,345–63,495 95% CI), which is 57% higher than our estimate of 35,846 ± 2,211 SE (31,668–40,337 95% CI) for 1982. Vegetation density, measured by canopy cover and lateral visibility at each station, has also increased since 1982. Our data suggest that the Tinian Monarch population has increased possibly due to increased habitat availability, but remains at risk both from an accidental introduction of brown tree snakes Concentrations of 18 trace elements and total organic carbon, and 66 semi-volatile compounds were determined from analysis of the fine-grained fraction of bed-sediment samples from 29 surface-water deposition locations.\r\n\r\nAnalysis of the bed-sediment data indicates that commercial and industrial land-use areas generally are associated with the highest concentrations of trace elements and semi-volatile organic compounds, and the greatest occurrence and distribution of trace elements and semi-volatile organic compounds in bed sediments at Fort Gordon. Bed sediment collected at sites having drainage areas less than 1.0 square mile and greater than 45 percent commercial and industrial land uses, have the most occurrences and the highest concentrations of trace elements and semi-volatile organic compounds. Sampling sites having less than 2 percent commercial and industrial land uses had the lowest concentrations, regardless of drainage basin size. Relative rankings and evaluation of individual trace element and semi-volatile organic compound concentration data identified two sites that have substantially higher sediment-quality scores than the other sites. This suggests that these sites have the greatest potential risk for adverse effects on aquatic life. However, many seismic processing packages have difficulty reading in ASCII data. In addition, it may be cumbersome to process a separate file for each recording station, particularly if traces from different recording stations contain a different number of data samples and/or a different start time.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>This new program - SUDS2SEGY - combines these recording station files into a single SEGY file. In addition, SUDS2SEGY normalizes the trace times so that each trace starts at a given time and consists of a fixed number of samples. This normalization allows seismic data from many different stations to be read in as a single \"data gather\". SUDS2SEGY also produces a report summarizing the offset and maximum absolute amplitude for each component in a station file. This degradation of water quality is defined chiefly by the “Class 1 Aquatic Life Standards” that give limits for certain dissolved metal concentrations according to water alkalinity.</p><p>Veins enriched in base- and precious metals were explored and mined in the Basin, Cataract Creek, and High Ore Creek drainages over a period of more than 70 years. Extracted minerals included galena, sphalerite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite and arsenopyrite. Most of the metal-mining wastes in the study area were identified and described by the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology. In 1997, the U.S. Geological Survey collected 20 composite samples of mine-dump or tailings waste from ten sites in the Basin and Cataract Creek drainages, and two samples from one site in the High Ore Creek drainage. Desborough and Fey presented data concerning acid generation potential, mineralogy, concentrations of certain metals by energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF), and trace-element leachability of mine and exploration wastes from the ten sites of the Basin and Cataract Creek drainages. Examples of the main scientific outputs are presented and options for improved processing are outlined and prioritized. The sites are all located within 5 nautical miles of shore on insular shelves or slopes. Regional maps were required of areas much larger than the disposal sites themselves to assess both the regional seafloor geology and the immediate vicinity of the disposal sites. The purpose of the disposal site surveys was to delimit the extent of disposal material by producing detailed bathymetric and backscatter maps of the seafloor with a ± 1 m spatial accuracy and <1% depth error. The advantage of using multibeam over conventional towed, single-beam sidescan sonar is that the multibeam data are accurately georeferenced for precise location of all imaged features. The multibeam produces a coregistered acoustic-backscatter map that is often required to locate individual disposal deposits. The data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Prairie Island Indian Community. Seventeen monitoring wells were installed by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1998. Fifteen of the wells were installed with the screen at the water-table. The well screens for the other two wells were approximately 26 and 56 feet below the water table. Samples were collected from the wells in 1998. The water-quality properties and constituents determined for the 17 wells include temperature, pH, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, major ions, nutrients, and iron and manganese. Water samples collected from two of the wells were analyzed for common agricultural pesticides. In addition, semiquantitative immunoassay screens for presence of atrazine and related triazine herbicides were conducted on samples from all 17 wells. Two sedimentary units are recognized; the Oligocene and Miocene Pantano(?) Formation and an unnamed upper Miocene through lower Pleistocene unit termed basin fill. \r\n\r\nThe complete Bouguer gravity anomaly map shows that there are three major structural subbasins in the upper San Pedro basin north of the international border with Mexico. The Tombstone subbasin is north of Tombstone, and two more are located north and south of Sierra Vista, respectively. This report concentrates on the two subbasins north and south of Sierra Vista. The northern subbasin (termed the Huachuca City subbasin) extends from east of Huachuca City to northeast of Whetstone, and the southern subbasin (termed the Palominas subbasin) extends southward from a line between Nicksville and Hereford to the border. The locations and shapes of these subbasins, thickness of basin fill, and depth to bedrock were estimated using a procedure involving interpolation of (1) the density functions derived in this study, (2) stratigraphic data from water wells, and (3) a residual gravity anomaly grid obtained by subtracting the gravity effects of the bedrock ranges bordering the basin from the complete Bouguer gravity anomaly. \r\n\r\nThis procedure indicates that the subbasins are shallow and contain significant thicknesses of the Pantano(?) Formation in addition to the overlying younger basin fill. The maximum depth to bedrock is about 1,700 m in the Palominas subbasin and 800m in the Huachuca City subbasin; the basin-fill unit occupies the upper 250-350 m in general with local thickenings exceeding 1,000 m in the Palominas subbasin. An east-west trending buried bedrock high beneath Fort Huachuca, Sierra Vista, and Charleston separates the subbasins. The depth to bedrock over this high is 200-500 m and the basin-fill unit ranges from 100 to 200 m thick there. A number of previously unrecognized faults were identified and the lengths of some of the known faults were extended based on reconnaissance geologic mapping, study of driller's logs, interpretation of aerial photographs and thematic mapper satellite images, and inspection of contoured gravity and aeromagnetic anomaly data. The purpose of the web site is to provide public access to a wide variety of information on the USGS investigation of the ground-water resources within the High Plains aquifer system. Typical pages on the web site include the following: descriptions of the High Plains NAWQA, the National NAWQA Program, the study-area setting, current and past activities, significant findings, chemical and ancillary data (which can be downloaded), listing and access to publications, links to other sites about the High Plains area, and links to other web sites studying High Plains ground-water resources. The High Plains aquifer is a regional aquifer system that underlies 174,000 square miles in parts of eight States (Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming). Because the study area is so large, the Internet is an ideal way to provide project data and information on a near real-time basis. The web site will be a collection of living documents where project data and information are updated as it becomes available throughout the life of the project.
