The sites are all located within 5 nautical miles of shore on insular shelves or slopes. Regional maps were required of areas much larger than the disposal sites themselves to assess both the regional seafloor geology and the immediate vicinity of the disposal sites. The purpose of the disposal site surveys was to delimit the extent of disposal material by producing detailed bathymetric and backscatter maps of the seafloor with a ± 1 m spatial accuracy and <1% depth error. The advantage of using multibeam over conventional towed, single-beam sidescan sonar is that the multibeam data are accurately georeferenced for precise location of all imaged features. The multibeam produces a coregistered acoustic-backscatter map that is often required to locate individual disposal deposits. These data were collected by the USGS as part of its regional seafloor mapping and in support of ocean disposal site monitoring studies conducted in cooperation with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Army Corps of Engineers (COE).","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr00124","usgsCitation":"Torresan, M.E., and Gardner, J.V., 2000, Acoustic mapping of the regional seafloor geology in and around Hawaiian ocean dredged-material disposal sites: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-124, HTML document, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr00124.","productDescription":"HTML document","onlineOnly":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":60341,"rank":3,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0124/summary.html","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":161274,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0124/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":3308,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/0124/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":466237,"rank":7,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_25600.htm","text":"Hilo area","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":466236,"rank":6,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_25599.htm","text":"Maui","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":466235,"rank":5,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_25598.htm","text":"Oahu","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":466234,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_25597.htm","text":"Kauai","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Hawai'i","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -178.31,18.91 ], [ -178.31,28.4 ], [ -154.81,28.4 ], [ -154.81,18.91 ], [ -178.31,18.91 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b13e4b07f02db6a34ed","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Torresan, Michael E. mtorresan@usgs.gov","contributorId":4392,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Torresan","given":"Michael","email":"mtorresan@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":208261,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gardner, James V.","contributorId":93035,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gardner","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"V.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":208262,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Data from these samples are used by the U.S. Navy to monitor the impact of submarine base activities on local water resources. Estuarine water and sediment data were collected from five sites on the Crooked River, Kings Bay, and Cumberland Sound. Surface-water data were collected from seven streams that discharge from Naval Submarine Base, Kings Bay. Ground-water data were collected from six ground-water monitoring wells completed in the water-table zone of the surficial aquifer at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay. Samples were analyzed for nutrients, total and dissolved trace metals, total and dissolved organic carbon, oil and grease, total organic halogens, biological and chemical oxygen demand, and total and fecal coliform.\r\n\r\nTrace metals in ground and surface waters did not exceed U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Drinking Water Standards; and trace metals in surface water also did not exceed U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Surface Water Standards. These trace metals included arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, selenium, silver, tin, and zinc. This study is a long-term coop-erative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey, the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the West Dakota Water Development District (which represents various local and county cooperators). This report is the third in a series of project data reports produced for the study.\r\n\r\nDaily water-level data are presented for 71 observation wells and 2 cave sites in the Black Hills area of western South Dakota. The wells include a network of observation wells that are maintained in cooperation with the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources and are completed in various bedrock formations that are utilized as aquifers in the Black Hills area of western South Dakota. Both cave sites are located within outcrops of the Madison Limestone. Data presented include site descriptions, hydrographs, and tables of daily water levels.\r\n\r\nAnnual measurements of water levels collected during water years 1995-98 from a net-work of 18 additional, miscellaneous wells are presented. These wells are part of a statewide network of wells completed in bedrock aquifers that was operated from 1959 through 1989 in cooperation with the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Site descriptions and hydrographs for the entire period of record for each site also are presented.\r\n\r\nWater-quality data are presented for 9 surface-water sites, 19 ground-water sites, and 30 sites that have been classified as areas of surface- and ground-water interaction in the Black Hills area. The surface- and ground-water interaction sites are further divided into three categories that include 11 loss zone sites, 8 headwater spring sites, and 11 downgradient spring sites.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nBranch of Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr0070","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Driscoll, D.G., Bradford, W.L., and Moran, M.J., 2000, Selected hydrologic data, through water year 1998, Black Hills Hydrology Study, South Dakota: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2000-70, iv, 284 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr0070.","productDescription":"iv, 284 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":153565,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":1377,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/ofr00-070/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4882e4b07f02db517489","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Driscoll, Daniel G. dgdrisco@usgs.gov","contributorId":1558,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Driscoll","given":"Daniel","email":"dgdrisco@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":562,"text":"South Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":189148,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bradford, Wendell L.","contributorId":102883,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bradford","given":"Wendell","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":189149,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Moran, Michael J. mjmoran@usgs.gov","contributorId":1047,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moran","given":"Michael","email":"mjmoran@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":465,"text":"Nevada Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":189147,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

(We will collectively term these two papers RLMM and term the method developed in RLMM the CS method here.) RLMM (pp. 478-479) state that the CS method is intended to provide a frequency distribution of possible alternative spatial transmissivity&nbsp;<i>T</i> distributions that (1) are statistically similar to the observed&nbsp;<i>T</i> distribution, (2) are equally likely given the calibration data, and (3) closely reproduce the measured pressures. The frequency distribution of transmissivities is then used to form frequency distribution of derived functions, such as travel times, which are summarized in the form of uncertainty measures, such as (RLMM, p. 512) \"confidence (or tolerance) intervals,\" on the actual values, which in the case of travels times, are values that could occur sometime in the future (RLMM, p.513).&nbsp;</p><p><i>Cooley</i> [2000] analyzes the RLMM method using linearization and bootstrap theory and concludes that that the method can yield accurate uncertainty estimates but only under some limited circumstances. &nbsp;In this comment we use Cooley's analysis to critique the method. The Selenga River is the largest single source of terrigenous input into Lake Baikal, and its large delta sits astride the major accommodation zone between the Central and South basins of the lake. Incorporating one of the world's largest lacustrine deltas, this depositional system is a classic example of the influence of rift basin structural segmentation on a major continental drainage. More than 3700 km of deep basin-scale multi-channel seismic reflection (MCS) data were acquired during the 1989 Russian and the 1992 Russian–American field programs. The seismic data image most of the sedimentary section, including pre-rift basement in several localities. The MCS data reveal that the broad bathymetric saddle between these two major half-graben basins is underlain by a complex of severely deformed basement blocks, and is not simply a consequence of long-term deltaic deposition. Maximum sediment thickness is estimated to be more than 9 km in some areas around the Selenga Delta. Detailed stratigraphic analyses of the Selenga area MCS data suggest that modes of deposition have shifted markedly during the history of the delta. The present mode of gravity- and mass-flow sedimentation that dominates the northern and southern parts of the modern delta, as well as the pronounced bathymetric relief in the area, are relatively recent developments in the history of the Lake Baikal Rift. Several episodes of major delta progradation, each extending far across the modern rift, can be documented in the MCS data. The stratigraphic framework defined by these prograding deltaic sequences can be used to constrain the structural as well as depositional evolution of this part of the Baikal Rift. An age model has been established for this stratigraphy, by tying the delta sequences to the site of the Baikal Drilling Project 1993 Drill Hole. Although the drill hole is only 100 m deep, and the base of the cores is only ∼670 ka in age, ages were extrapolated to deeper stratigraphic intervals using the Reflection-Seismic-Radiocarbon method of Cohen et al. (1993). The deep prograding delta sequences now observed in the MCS data probably formed in response to major fluctuations in sediment supply, rather than in response to shifts in lake level. This stratigraphic framework and age model suggest that the deep delta packages developed at intervals of approximately 400 ka and may have formed as a consequence of climate changes affiliated with the northern hemisphere glaciations. The stratigraphic analysis also suggests that the Selenga Basin and Syncline developed as a distinct depocentre only during the past ∼2–3 Ma.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"International Journal of Earth Sciences","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/s005310000095","usgsCitation":"Scholz, C., and Hutchinson, D.R., 2000, Stratigraphic and structural evolution of the Selenga Delta Accommodation Zone, Lake Baikal Rift, Siberia: International Journal of Earth Sciences, v. 89, no. 2, p. 212-228, https://doi.org/10.1007/s005310000095.","productDescription":"17 p.","startPage":"212","endPage":"228","costCenters":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":294204,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Russia","otherGeospatial":"Lake Baikal Rift","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ 104.9,52.29 ], [ 104.9,55.65 ], [ 113.1,55.65 ], [ 113.1,52.29 ], [ 104.9,52.29 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"89","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"541d45a7e4b0f68901ec310a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Scholz, C.A.","contributorId":76810,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Scholz","given":"C.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":501880,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hutchinson, D. A digital elevation model of Hofsjökull, which was constructed using SAR interferometry, was used to plot the SAR backscatter coefficient (\u0001\u0001σ°) vs elevation and air temperature along transects across the ice cap. Seasonal and daily σ° patterns are caused by freezing or thawing of the ice-cap surface, and abrupt changes in σ° are noted when the air temperature ranges from ∼−5° to 0°C. Late-summer 1997 σ° (SAR) and reflectance (Landsat) boundaries agree and appear to be coincident with the firn line and a SAR σ° boundary that can be seen in the January 1998 SAR image. In January 1994 through 1998, the elevation of this σ° boundary on the ice capwas quite stable, ranging from 1000 to 1300 m, while the equilibrium-line altitude, as measured on the ground, varied considerably. Thus the equilibrium line may be obscured by firn from previous years. Techniques are established to measure long-term changes in the elevation of the firn line and changes in the position of the ice margin.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3189/172756500781833061","usgsCitation":"Hall, D., Williams, R., Barton, J., Sigurdsson, O., Smith, L., and Garvin, J., 2000, Evaluation of remote-sensing techniques to measure decadal-scale changes of Hofsjokull ice cap, Iceland: Journal of Glaciology, v. 46, no. 154, p. 375-388, https://doi.org/10.3189/172756500781833061.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"375","endPage":"388","costCenters":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":479117,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.3189/172756500781833061","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":293913,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Iceland","otherGeospatial":"Hofsjokull ice cap","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -18.8487,64.8072 ], [ -18.8487,64.8262 ], [ -18.7847,64.8262 ], [ -18.7847,64.8072 ], [ -18.8487,64.8072 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"46","issue":"154","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-09-08","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"54195130e4b091c7ffc8e67d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hall, D.K.","contributorId":84506,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hall","given":"D.K.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":501254,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Williams, R.S. While satellite remote sensing is one key way of meeting the challenge of real-time monitoring of large ocean regions, new technologies are required for in situ observations to measure conditions below the ocean surface and to measure ocean characteristics not observable from space. One method of making sustained observations in the coastal ocean is to install a fiber optic cable from shore to the area of interest. This approach has the advantage of providing power to offshore instruments and essentially unlimited bandwidth for data. The LEO-15 observatory offshore of New Jersey (yon Alt et al., 1997) and the planned Katama observatory offshore of Martha's Vineyard (Edson et al., 2000) use this approach. These sites, along with other cabled sites, will play an important role in coastal ocean science in the next decade. Cabled observatories, however, have two drawbacks that limit the number of sites that are likely to be installed. First, the cable and the cable installation are expensive and the shore station needed at the cable terminus is often in an environmentally sensitive area where competing interests must be resolved. Second, cabled sites are inherently limited geographically to sites within reach of the cable, so it is difficult to cover large areas of the coastal ocean.","language":"English","publisher":"Oceanography Society","doi":"10.5670/oceanog.2000.30","usgsCitation":"Frye, D., Butman, B., Johnson, M., von der Heydt, K., and Lerner, S., 2000, Portable coastal observatories: Oceanography, v. 13, no. 2, p. 24-31, https://doi.org/10.5670/oceanog.2000.30.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"24","endPage":"31","costCenters":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":479120,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.5670/oceanog.2000.30","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":293898,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Massachusetts Bay","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -71.180419921875,\n              41.672911819602085\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.58740234375,\n              41.672911819602085\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.58740234375,\n              43.1090040242731\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.180419921875,\n              43.1090040242731\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.180419921875,\n              41.672911819602085\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"13","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5419514be4b091c7ffc8e7c8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Frye, Daniel","contributorId":67021,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Frye","given":"Daniel","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":501235,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Butman, Bradford 0000-0002-4174-2073 bbutman@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4174-2073","contributorId":943,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Butman","given":"Bradford","email":"bbutman@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":501231,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Johnson, Mark","contributorId":48272,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnson","given":"Mark","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":501233,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"von der Heydt, Keith","contributorId":21078,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"von der Heydt","given":"Keith","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":501232,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Lerner, Steven","contributorId":49282,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lerner","given":"Steven","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":501234,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

Channels in the map area span a long age range, cut ancient rocks that may contain important biogenic information, and funneled water into exobiologically important lacustrine basins. The map area is characterized by diverse geologic units representing a variety of endogenic and exogenic processes. The geologic history of this region spans the entire history of the planet.</span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;</span></p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The base map was compiled from controlled pho-tomosaic maps of the Mars Transverse Mercator (MTM) –15182 and –15187 quadrangles (U.S. Geological Survey, 1992a, b). The map area is in the Aeolis re-gion, which was first mapped from Mariner 9 images at 1:5,000,000 scale (Scott and others, 1978) and at 1:25,000,000 scale (Scott and Carr, 1978). On the basis of Viking data, the area was later mapped at 1:15,000,000 scale (Greeley and Guest, 1987) and in part at 1:5,000,000 scale (Scott and Chapman, 1995). Recently, the area was mapped at 1:1,000,000 scale by Landheim (1995). This 1:500,000-scale map shows a great diversity of geologic materials and demonstrates a more complete understanding of fluvial processes in the highland plains, the evolution of Ma’adim Vallis, and sedimentation in Gusev crater and in de Vaucou-leurs, an ancient 300-km-diameter impact structure west of Gusev crater. Standard photogeologic mapping techniques elucidated by Wilhelms (1990) were used in this work. Viking Orbiter images used to map the area range in resolution from 63 to 70 m/pixel, with small patches at 225 m/pixel.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/i2666","isbn":"0607938390","usgsCitation":"Kuzmin, R.O., Greeley, R., Landheim, R., Cabrol, N.A., and Farmer, J.D., 2000, Geologic map of the MTM-15182 and MTM-15187 quadrangles, Gusev Crater-Ma'adim Vallis region, Mars: U.S. Geological Survey IMAP 2666, HTML Document, https://doi.org/10.3133/i2666.","productDescription":"HTML Document","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":438891,"rank":3,"type":{"id":30,"text":"Data Release"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.5066/P9DVSIG9","text":"USGS data release","linkHelpText":"Geologic map of the MTM-15182 and MTM-15187 quadrangles, Gusev Crater-Ma'adim Vallis region, Mars"},{"id":186477,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":6154,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/i2666/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"scale":"502000","otherGeospatial":"Mars","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afde4b07f02db696c33","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kuzmin, Ruslan O.","contributorId":31059,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kuzmin","given":"Ruslan","email":"","middleInitial":"O.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":276459,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Greeley, Ronald","contributorId":20833,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Greeley","given":"Ronald","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":276458,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Landheim, Ragnhild","contributorId":37826,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Landheim","given":"Ragnhild","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":276460,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Cabrol, Nathalie A.","contributorId":51382,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cabrol","given":"Nathalie","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":276461,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Farmer, Jack D.","contributorId":52272,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Farmer","given":"Jack","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":276462,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

Method 1312, Synthetic Precipitation Leaching Procedure (SPLP). In 1998, members of the U.S. Geological Survey Mine Waste Characterization Project collected four mine-waste composite samples from mining districts in southwestern New Mexico (CAR and PET) and near Leadville, Colorado (TUC and MII). Resulting leachate pH values for the four composites ranged from 5.45 to 8.84 and ranked in the following order: CAR < TUC < MII < PET. Specific conductivity values ranged from 85 uS/cm to 847 uS/cm in the following order: PET < MII < CAR < TUC.
