Reconnaissance geochemical sampling has been conducted by the Lithium Resource Program of the United States Geological Survey for much of the Western U.S. Sediment, rock, and brine samples have been collected in many states, but this report describes just those solid samples collected in Nevada. Further reports by other members of the Lithium Program will describe water samples from Nevada and samples from other states.
\nThe purpose of the sampling program was to determine if areas of anonalous lithium could be recognized by reconnaissance surface sampling. The results, however, have been indeterminate because most large lithium deposits occur at depth and appear to be formed when deeply buried. Many may not manifest themselves at the surface at all . Nonetheless, the data derived during the surface sampling program will be presented in this report.

of earthquake-induced deformation. The lakes are: Summit, Upper Trail, and Skilak, all on the Kenai Peninsula, and Eklutna, northeast of Anchorage (fig. 1). Interest in these lakes was stimulated by hypotheses developed from a study of sediments in Van Norman Reservoir, California, after the 1971 San Fernando earthquake (Sims, 1973). During that study three zones of deformational structures were found and correlated with moderate earthquakes that shook the San Fernando area in 1930, 1952, and 1971. Results of that study, coupled with the experimental formation of deformational structures similar to those from Van Norman Reservoir, led to a search for similar structures in Pleistocene and Holocene lakes and lake sediments in other seismically active areas. The lakes for this study were chosen specifically because of their location within the area affected by the 1964 Prince William Sound earthquake, and the probability of obtaining varved sediments which would allow counting of years between sedimentologic events.

This reach is approximately 240 miles (386 kilometres) long, measured along the center of the channel, and has a drainage area of about 19,700 square miles (51,000 square kilometres) at its downstream end.
\nA solution of Rhodamine BA, a fluorescent dye, was injected into the river at selected sites. Water samples were collected throughout the study reach and were analyzed, by use of a fluorometer, for dye concentration.
\nTime-of-travel data have been related to stream discharge and to distance along the river channel. These relations permit the estimation of travel time for a water-soluble contaminant moving between any two points within the study reach at any desired discharge in the lower-to- medium flow range.
\nThe range of discharge for these studies was from 1,560 ft3/s (44.2 m3/s) to 4,330 ft3/s (123 m3/s) at the Wilkes-Barre, Pa. gaging station. The recorded travel times for the typical subreach, Shickshinny, Pa. to Danville 'Pa., ranged from 72.5 hours to 36.7 hours.

In this analysis, expected benefits are calculated using anticipated streamflow data and these benefits are averaged over all possible data values. The increase in these average expected benefits is subsequently compared to the costs of obtaining the data and benefits foregone by delaying the project to collect the data. Thus, the value of collecting the data may be determined.
A Leontief type production function is assumed for an oil shale retorting plant. The economic impact of hydrologic uncertainty is investigated by examining potential changes in plant output along with changes in regional incomes which are calculated by means of a regional input-output model. Alternatives for reducing the uncertainty included establishing water discharge measuring stations, transferring streamflow information from one site to another via regionalization, and a combination of both. Given a specific alternative, the optimum time period for data collection was found. Regionalization considered statistical properties of network designs based on simulated regression analysis.

The deepest instrument is at a depth of 186 meters, two meters below the top of the Franciscan bedrock. Earthquake data from regional distances (29 km ≤ Δ ≤ 485 km) over a wide range of azimuths are compared with the predictions of a simple plane-layered model with material properties independently determined. Spectral ratios between the surface and bedrock computed for the one horizontal component of motion that was analyzed agree rather well with the model predictions; the model predicts the frequencies of the first three peaks within 10 percent in most cases and the height of the peaks within 50 percent in most cases. The objectives of the geological program, therefore, were two-fold. The first was to provide baseline information on the sediment system by defining the nature of the sediment., its contained pore fluids and associated nodules. The second was to carry out laboratory studies to help predict how the resuspended sediment might interact chemically with surface area sea water and how rapidly the sediment might settle out.

A comprehensive review of the Lisburne in the subsurface of the eastern Arctic Slope indicates attractive reservoir characteristics in a favorable source and migration setting where numerous trapping mechanisms appear to be available. Evaluation of this group as a potential exploration objective is particularly timely in view of impending offshore sales in the Beaufort Sea and current exploration programs underway in the Prudhoe Bay area and the Naval Petroleum Reserve.
Dolomite and sandstone have been identified as reservoir rocks. Oolitic grainstone is a common rock type, but all observations to date indicate little reservoir potential owing to complete void filling by calcite cement. The most important reservoir rock as judged by thickness, areal extent, and predictability is microsucrosic (10-30 μ) dolomite of intertidal to supratidal origin. It is present throughout the Lisburne and is most abundant near the middle of the sequence. Northward it decreases in thickness from 1,000 feet (300 m) to less than 100 feet (30 m). Porosity of the dolomite as determined in selected wells averages between 10 and 15 percent and attains a maximum of slightly more than 25 percent. Net thickness of reservoir rocks (i.e., rocks with greater than 5 percent porosity) varies in these wells from 140 feet (40 m) to 390 feet (120 m). Oil shows are common, and drill-stem tests have yielded as much as 1,600 bbls/day oil and 22 MMcf/day gas in the Lisburne pool of the Prudhoe Bay Field and as much as 2,057 bbls/day saltwater outside the field area. The occurrence of dolomite over such a large area makes its presence in the offshore Beaufort Sea and adjacent Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4 fairly certain. The occurrence of sandstone as thick as 140 feet (40 m) in the middle and upper part of the Lisburne in two coastal wells suggests that larger areas of sandstone may be found to the north in offshore areas. Shows of oil and gas and a saltwater flow of 1,470 bbls/day have been recorded from this sandstone facies.
Shales of Permian and Cretaceous age unconformably overlie the Lisburne, providing adequate sealing beds above potential reservoirs. Impermeable limestone (completely cemented grainstone) and thin beds of shale may serve as seals within the Lisburne, but the possibility of fractures in these units may negate their sealing capability.
The most favorable source rock for Lisburne hydrocarbons appears to be Cretaceous shale that unconformably overlies the Lisburne east of Prudhoe Bay. This shale is reported by Morgridge and Smith (1972) to be a rich source rock and is the most likely source for the entire Prudhoe Bay Field. A source within the Lisburne or within the underlying Kayak Shale is postulated to explain oil shows in the southernmost Lisburne wells. This postulated source may be in a more basinal facies of the Lisburne and may be similar to dark shale in the upper Lisburne found in thrust slides in the Brooks-Range. Coal in the underlying Endicott Group is a possible source for dry gas. It is inferred that at the present time much of this coal is in a gas—generating regime downdip from the Prudhoe Bay Field area.
Stratigraphic traps involving the Lisburne Group may exist as a result of widespread Permian and Cretaceous unconformities. Structural traps related to normal faulting may occur along the trend of the Barrow Arch, and faulted anticlines are numerous in the foothills of the Brooks Range. Combination traps are possible along the trend of the Barrow Arch at places where both stratigraphic and structural trap might exist.

One set of anomalies is related to anticlinal ridges, nother follows the traces of known or inferred faults, and a third set coincides with a swarm of feeder dikes for the Ice Harbor flows of Swanson and others (1975b), the youngest unit of basalt in the area. A fourth set of narrow, sinuous anomalies is related to flows that filled ancient valleys during the late stage of Yakima volcanism. The magnetic map suggests that the Ice Harbor dike swarm is offset by left-lateral strike-slip displacement along the Rattlesnake-Wallula fault, a segment of the Olympic-Wallowa lineament. The compilation thus represents nearly three times as much land data and ten times as much marine data as were available for one previous Alaskan gravity map (Barnes, 1969b) and fiftyfold increase since the original compilation of Alaskan land gravity data (Wollard and others, 1960). However, data from many parts of the state are still too scattered (inset 1) for accurate contouring; such deficiencies are most serious in the southwestern part of the state and in the Bering Sea.
The map shows the variation of the simple Bouguer anomaly field and is thus comparable to the existing Bouguer gravity map of the conterminous 48 states (Wollard and Joesting, 1964). On land the Bouguer anomaly contours reflect the regional variations of gravity better than free-air anomaly contours, which are not adequately corrected for topography. However, in oceanic areas the free-air anomaly is less sensitive to bottom topography than the Bouguer anomaly. Accordingly, the map coverage includes available data from the continental shelves where the bottom relief is small, but it has not been extended to cover the continental slope, the deep ocean, or the islands of the Aleutian arc, where the free-air anomaly would be a better indicator of the regional variation of gravity, and where Bouguer gravity are only available for a few small areas (Miller and Bath, 1969; Healy and Kibler, 1976a and 1976b).
These summaries of references are designed to aid in library research on metallic and nonmetallic (other than mineral fuels and construction materials) mineral occurrences in the Livengood quadrangle, Alaska. All references to reports of the Geological Survey, to most reports of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, and to most reports of the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor State and Territorial agencies released before January 1, 1976, are summarized. Certain, mainly statistical, reports such as the annual Minerals Yearbook of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the biennial and annual reports of the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor State and Territorial agencies are not included.
This report is divided into three parts: a section made up of summaries of references arranged alphabetically by occurrence name; a section that lists synonyms for names in the first section, claim names, and the names of operators and owners of mines and prospects; and a section that lists, by author, all references summarized in the first section.
