Most of these data were collected as part of specific ground-water studies conducted in cooperation with various Federal, State, and local agencies.
In 1972, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the Geological Survey undertook a study of the Garber-Wellington aquifer in northern Oklahoma and southern Logan Counties. As a part of this project, records of about 120 wells were collected and 12 samples of ground water from the aquifer were analyzed in the laboratories of the Geological Survey; these records are included in this report. In addition, records of about 302 wells and analyses of 60 water samples were taken from a report by Wood and Burton (1966) and from the files of the Geological Survey.
Also included in this report are selected references for those desiring more information on the area's ground-water resources.
The stratigraphic nomenclature and age determinations used in this report are those accepted by the Oklahoma Geological Survey and do not necessarily agree with those of the U.S. Geological Survey.

S. Geological Survey, to investigate the suitability of an airborne instrument package based on inertial techniques to serve as the datum for a laser altimeter in a system for aerial profiling of terrain to determine selected features of stream-valley geometry to an accuracy of ± 0.5 ft. in the vertical coordinate and ± 10 ft. in the horizontal coordinates. Feasible system configuration features a high performance inertial platform incorporating an integral laser tracker, pointing and ranging on retroreflectors on the ground, in order to provide the frequent updates needed to meet the accuracy requirements. In all environments except those of severe gravity gradients the nominal two- by twenty-mile survey area can be covered using three ground-surveyed retroreflectors, interspersed with several unlocated retroreflectors that are surveyed in by the airborne system along a longitudinal path within the river valley when the aircraft arrives over the site. Subsequent transverse profiling runs (traverses that may be spaced as close as one-quarter mile apart) are flown using, in turn, all retroreflectors as updating position references. Pointing and range information from the tracker are optimally combined with the on-board inertial measurements and available gravity data to provide position information and serve as the height datum for a terrain-clearance measuring laser altimeter. Data-logging means and operator display, as well as steering commands to the aircraft autopilot, are provided. The system configuration is capable of operating in single- or twin-engine aircraft including helecopters. Seismic velocities of various units often show a strong correlation with the amounts of damage following large earthquakes and have been used as a basis for certain types of seismic zonation studies.
Currently a program is in progress to measure seismic velocities in the San Francisco Bay region at an estimated 150 sites. At each site seismic travel times are measured in drill holes, normally at 2.5-m intervals to a depth of 30 m. Geologic logs are determined from drill hole cuttings, undisturbed samples, and penetrometer samples. The data provide a detailed comparison of geologic and seismic characteristics and provide parameters for estimating strong earthquake ground motions quantitatively at each of the site. A major emphasis of this program is to obtain a detailed comparison of geologic and seismic data on a regional scale for use in seismic zonation. The broad data base available in the San Francisco Bay region suggests using the area as a pilot area for the development of general techniques applicable to other areas.

A network of observation wells has been established near the sites, and data have been collected from the wells and from nearby streams. Ground-water mounds have built up under the lagoons as percolation of effluents occurred. Percolating effluents mix with ground water and form plumes of ground water that contain chemical constituents for the effluents. Each plume tends to move down the hydraulic gradient in a direction generally perpendicular to the water-level contours. Water-level contours and most likely areas of movement of the plumes are shown on maps. Tests using rhodamine WT dye and dissolved solids as tracers suggested that chemical constituents in the plumes travel at different velocities as a result of dispersion and adsorlption. Chemical constituents from effluent percolating from the Old Faithful lagoons probably discharge into nearby Iron Spring Creek. Constituents from lagoons at the other three sites studied probably have not reached nearby streams or lakes.
