Snowmelt from high altitudes and above average rain in June caused flooding and sustained high flows into July. Federal and State agencies estimated flood damage at about $53,000,000. Total storm precipitation equaled or exceeded 3 inches (76 mm) in some areas. The total storm yield on the area of significant runoff was probably between 20,000 and 25,000 acre-feet (2.5 x 107 m3 and 3.1 x 107 m3) of water. Of this amount, probably less than 3,000 acre-feet (37 x 106 m3) flowed directly to Lake Mead. \r\n\r\nPeak flows of Tropicana Wash, Flamingo Wash, Las Vegas Creek, and Las Vegas Wash were the highest ever determined. Flooding caused the loss of two lives and inflicted extensive property damage. Total damage was reportedly estimated by the Clark County Flood Control District at $4-5 million. \r\n\r\nProblems associated with sediment erosion, transportation, and deposition occurred throughout the flooded area. An unknown amount of the material transported during the flood was deposited in Lake Mead near the mouth of Las Vegas Wash. Lateral erosion appeared more prominent than vertical erosion along most major channels, except on Las Vegas Wash at Northshore Road where downcutting threatened the loss of the highway. The climate is generally cool and pleasant in May, early June, September, and October; winters are cold. Normal annual precipitation ranges from less than 8 to more than 16 inches (203 to 406 millimetres).</p><p>Geologic formations in the monument range in age from upper Precambrian to Holocene, but not all ages are represented. The monument is on the south limb of the east-trending regional fold representing the Uinta Mountains. Faults and subsidary folds on the south slope of the Uinta Mountains complicate the geology and hydrology of the area.</p><p>None of the surface streams in the monument are diverted for public supply, but the Green and Yampa Rivers are a recreational resource for boaters. The flow of the Green River is regulated by Flaming Gorge Reservoir; however, flood potentials are estimated for the Yampa River and three smaller streams. Facilities in the monument are not endangered by probable mean annual floods, but may sustain some damage to facilities by the 25- or 50-year floods.</p><p>Major aquifers in the monument are sandstone and limestone formations, but these formations are drained in the higher areas. Alluvium along the major stream channels yields small amounts of water to wells, but some of the water is not of suitable chemical quality for public supply. All public water supplies in 1971 were obtained from wells, and the use of water during 1970 was estimated to be 15 million gallons (46 acre-feet or 0.057 cubic hectometres). These lineaments occur as alinements of surface geologic structures, linear valleys or ridges, and linear changes in tonal contrast marking differences in soil type, soil moisture, or vegetation. The lineaments are believed to represent the surface traces of zones of weakness deep within the earth's crust along which vertical or horizontal adjustments to earth stresses persistently recurred since at least Precambrian time.</p><p>A consistent pattern in the lineaments can be discerned in Alaska (fig. 1D), and throughout the North American Cordillera (fig. 2). This pattern is believed to represent a mosaic of crustal blocks, whose differential movements have guided the tectonic development of the Cordillera.</p><p>Areas in which mineral deposits are known to be concentrated are alined along many of the lineaments or occur at lineament intersections, suggesting that the zones of weakness reflected by the lineaments provided felicitous pathways for upward movement of mineralizing agents. Other lineaments bound areas of high mineral concentration suggesting that some crustal blocks have had a tectonic history more favorable for mineralization than others. These conclusions suggest that the study of space image lineaments can provide new and fruitful approaches to the search for concealed mineral deposits.</p><p>In Alaska, some lineaments coincide in part with active fault traces and some separate areas of significantly different structure and geologic history. However, the movements along the zones of weakness which these lineaments are believed to reflect have been too slow and spread over too many millions of years for the lineaments to be considered as marking zones of present earthquake hazard.</p><p>Detailed discussion of the lineaments, and of interpretations as to their meaning, are contained in: 1) a paper presented by Lathram and Raynolds at the First William T. Base flow of major streams draining the aquifer was reduced by as much as 19 percent between 1967 and 1975. Recoverable ground water in storage was reduced by about 1 percent. New withdrawal of ground water in 1975 was about 250 ,000 acre-feet (308 million cubic meters), compared with estimated recharge from precipitation of 176,000 acre-feet (217 million cubic meters). This report includes all analytical data on 799 channel samples of coal beds from major operating mines and core holes in 28 States, collected mainly by State Geological Surveys under a cooperative program funded largely by the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration. \r\n\r\nFor each sample, the U.S. Geological Survey has quantitatively determined the amounts of 24 major, minor, and trace elements (including AI, As, Cd, Cu, F, Hg, Mn, Na, Pb, Se, U, and Zn), and has semiquantitatively determined the concentrations of 15 to 20 additional trace elements (including B, Be, Cr, Ge, Mo, Ni, and V). In addition, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has provided proximate and ultimate analyses, and Btu and forms-of-sulfur determinations on 488 of the samples. \r\n\r\nStatistical summaries of the data are given for all coal samples in the United States, for coal divided by rank (53 anthracite, 509 bituminous coal, 183 subbituminous coal, and 54 lignite samples), and the arithmetic means, ranges, and geometric means and deviations are given for the coal in each of seven different major coal areas in the United States. For example, the average coal in the United States contains 11.3 percent ash, 10.0 percent moisture, 2.0 percent sulfur, and has 11,180 Btu per pound; of the 10 major oxides determined on the 525?C ash, the average SiO2 content is 38 percent, Al2O3 20 percent, and Na2O 0.67 percent; the average Cd content is 7.3 ppm, Pb 114 ppm, and Zn 151 ppm (range 1 ppm to 6.0 percent). During Hurricane Betsy (1965), for example, the level of Lake Pontchartrain rose as much as 13 feet. Nineteen core-material-sampling sites were chosen by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as possible borrow areas for fill material to be used in levee construction for flood protection around Lake Pontchartrain. Twenty-three receiving-water sites were also selected to represent the water that will contact the proposed levees. Selected nutrients, metals, pesticides, and other organic constituents were analyzed from bed-material and native-water samples as well as upon elutriate samples of specific core material-receiving water systems. The results of these analyses are presented without interpretation.
