The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the North Central Texas Council of Governments, the Trinity River Authority of Texas, and the Texas Water Development Board, conducted two time-of-travel studies in the Trinity River basin in November and December, 1975. Field data were collected on the East Fork Trinity River during November 18-22, 1975, and on the Elm Fork Trinity River during December 8-13, 1975. The purpose of these two studies was to provide data that could be used by the Trinity River Authority and the Texas Water Quality Board in the development of a mathematical water-quality model of the two streams. The model is to be used in a comprehensive water-quality management plan for the Trinity River basin.

Forty-nine ground-water samples from wells and springs were collected and analyzed during the study. Eight surface-water samples were analyzed. All the water samples were analyzed for major cations and anions, selenium, and arsenic. Seven of the surface-water samples also were analyzed for trace elements. The potability of ground and surface waters in the Eagle River valley can be determined by comparing the chemical data in tables with the recommended drinking-water-quality standards of the U.S. Public Health Service (1962) presented at the top of the tables. Most of the analyses indicate that only a few chemical constituents (dissolved solids, iron, manganese, and sulfate) occur in excess of these standards. The occurrence of selenium in excess of the recommended limits was detected in two samples. The peak discharge of the probable maximum flood at Lake Chippewa was computed to be about 75,000 cubic feet per second, primarily caused by rainfall on the lake. A secondary peak of about 41,000 cubic feet per second was due to streamflow entering Lake Chippewa. The 14-day volume of this flood was 450 ,000 acre-feet. Using an assumed operating procedure for Winter Dam, the maximum lake stage for the probable maximum flood was computed to be about 1,318 feet above mean sea level--about 3 feet below the dam crest and 6 feet above the proposed normal summer operating level. No surface evidence was found to indicate that any of the faults have been active in Holocene time. The sparse shallow seismicity thus far recorded does not correlate with known faults, nor does it define linear trends suggestive of faulting. Tidal flats at the mouths of the Kenai, Kasilof, and Chickaloon Rivers have been uplifted in the Holocene, however, and the uplift may reflect growing anticlines at depth. Some faults associated with folding may be active, but they are probably too limited in size to generate destructive earthquakes. They could, however, constitute a hazard to manmade structures in their immediate vicinity.
Vibrational damage and ground failure during the 1964 earthquake were most extensive north of Tustumena Lake in areas of water-saturated unconsolidated deposits with uneven topography. South of Tustumena Lake, damage resulted mainly from landslides formed along unconfined bluffs and riverbanks, and from submarine sliding and subsidence at Homer Spit. A comparable distribution of surficial effects may be anticipated in future large earthquakes on the Kenai Lowland.
