Triassic (Bocas Formation), Jurassic (Jordan and Giron Formations).and Cretaceous (Tambor, Rosa Blanca, Paja, Tablazo, Simiti, La Luna, and Umir Formations) sedimentary rocks overlie the metamorphic rocks and are younger than most of the intrusions. A geological and geochemical reconnaissance of part of the central Santander Massif included the Vetas and California gold districts. At Vetas the gold is generally in brecciated aphanitic quartz and phyllonite. Dark-gray material in the ore may be graphite. The ore veins follow steep west-northwest- and north-northeast-striking fracture zones. No new gold deposits were found. Additional geochemical studies should concentrate on western Loma Pozo del Rey and on improvement of the gold extraction process. \r\n\r\nAt California the gold is in pyritiferous quartz veins and quartz breccia. Ore containing black sooty material (graphite?) is highly radioactive. Some of the mineralization is post-Lower Cretaceous. Soil samples indicate that gold deposits lie under the thick blanket of soil on the ridges above the zone of mining. Three principal gold targets are outlined by gold and associated minerals in pan concentrates. The close relation of gold and copper anomalies suggests that copper may be useful as a pathfinder for gold elsewhere in the region. Based on occurrences of gold or high concentrations of pyrite or chalcopyrite in pan concentrates and on analytical data, eight potential gold targets are outlined in the central massif. The Lower Rio Bermejo is in many ways atypical, as its channel narrows downstream. Also its flow decreases downstream even though average annual rainfall at its mouth is twice that at its head (1,200 mm vs. 600 mm) and its suspended-sediment at El Yacare was about 41 million metric tonnes per year during 1970-73 and 82 million metric tonnes per year at El Colorado. The Rio Pilcomayo ' Superior ' disappears near Laguna Escalante, owing to plugging of its channel by sediment, into a network of shallow lakes and marshes. Another stream known as the Rio Pilcomayo ' Inferior ' appears about 160 km to the southeast and meanders downstream to the Rio Paraguay. The Rio Pilcomayo ' Superior ' carries about 100 million metric tonnes of sediment per year. The average annual concentration of sediment is more than 6 kg per cubic meter of flow. The estimated 1970 water use in the study area averaged about 13 million gallons per day (mgd); of this amount about 9 mgd came from surface-water sources--from a large reservoir outside the study area--and about 4 mgd came from ground water pumped from two aquifers in the area. Anticipated water use soon will be about 18 to 21 mgd; virtually all the additional quantity required (about 5 to 8 mgd) above present use must come from ground-water sources. Preliminary evaluation of the aquifers suggests that an additional 1.5 mgd can be developed from the upper aquifer and 7 mgd from the lower aquifer. Existing wells tapping the lower aquifer might yield additional water and increase the total yield in the area by 3.5 mgd, and new wells drilled in selected areas could produce an additional 3.5 mgd from this aquifer. However, additional, large-scale ground-water withdrawal from the lower aquifer could induce saltwater intrusion into wells situated in coastal areas. Four test wells tapped a water-hearing zone of sand and gravel and had yields ranging from 27 to 170 gallons per minute, with drawdowns of about 5 feet to about 65 feet. Except for high concentrations of iron and manganese (which can be treated and reduced for domestic use), the water quality is good. Conditions for drain-field waste disposal (such as from septic tanks) are probably good in at least the northern two-thirds of the island. The potential for seawater encroachment into the water-bearing zones underlying the island is unknown but may be great in places. The danger of inducing encroachment can be minimized by maintaining pumping levels above sea level, using a network of several wells pumped intermittently into a storage facility, and spacing these wells to spread out the effects cf pumping. Monitoring of the water quality in all wells would help indicate early signs cf increasing chloride content that warn of impending seawater encroachment.</p><p>In the northern half of the island, where ground-water conditions are the most favorable, wells 100 tc 200 feet deep may yield 25 to 100 gallons per minute with minimum chances of seawater encroachment. Geochemical exploration for this type of disseminated deposit depends upon recognizing the significance of this volatile suite and interpreting it in light of other geologic and geophysical data. One way of estimating the significance of the volatile suite is to determine enrichment factors. The enrichment factor is defined as abundance divided by crustal abundance or abundance divided by the local Clarke. Enrichment factors for the volatile suite in specific areas of the Edna Mountain quadrangle, Humboldt County, Nevada, interpreted with other geologic and geophysical factors, indicate that a potential for disseminated gold mineralization exists. Although most known disseminated gold deposits are exposed at the surface, the potential for finding additional buried or concealed deposits in north-central Nevada is high. Several design conditions were analyzed for their effect on the 100-year profile. Analyses were made to determine the effect of both removal and retention of the existing Sherwood Road bridge and roadway embankment 750 feet downstream from the proposed site. The normal water-surface elevation (without the bridge) at the proposed site would be 1,345.2 feet for the 50-year flood and 1 ,345.6 feet for the 100-year flood if the existing Sherwood Road bridge and embankment were retained, and would be 1,344.8 feet and 1,345.1 feet for the 50- and 100-year flood, respectively, if the bridge and roadway embankment were removed. The magnitudes of the 50- and 100-year floods at the proposed site would be 8,300 cubic feet per second and 9,300 cubic feet per second, respectively.
