The Bridge area had been \ndesignated the Frazier known geothermal resource area \n(Frazier KGRA) by the U.S. Geological Survey (Godwin and \nothers-, 1971) . Since 1972, several units of the Geological \nSurvey have studied the area to provide data for the U.S. \nEnergy Research and Development Administration, which proposes to ascertain whether the geothermal resource can be \ndeveloped for power generation and other uses. The studies \ninclude geologic mapping, geophysical surveys, water sampling, test drilling, and studies of all available drill- \nhole data. A list of reports already prepared on the area \nis included with this report.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Core drilling of five holes began in August 1974 and \nwas completed in March 1975. These holes are referred to as \nintermediate-depth core holes, principally because in the \nspring of 1974, 35 auger holes 25 to 98 feet (7.6 to 30\nmeters) were completed in the area (Crosthwaite, 1974), and \nthe Aerojet Nuclear Company, under the auspices of the U.S. \nEnergy Research and Development Administration, was planning \nsome deep drilling 4,000 to 6,000 feet (1,200 to 1,800 \nmeters) (fig. 1). The purpose of the core drilling was to \nprovide information to test geophysical interpretations of \nthe subsurface structure and lithology and to provide hydrologic and geologic data on the shallow part of the geothermal \nsystem. Samples of the core were made available to several \ndivisions and branches of the Geological Survey and to \npeople and agencies outside the Survey. This report presents the basic data from the core holes that had been \ncollected to September 1, 1975, and includes lithologic and \ngeophysical well logs, chemical analyses of water (table 1), \nand laboratory analyses of cores (table 2) that were completed as of the above date. The storm which preceded the flood was net particularly outstanding in its intensity or duration. However, antecedent conditions plus the timing and direction of the storm were \"ideally tuned\" to cause the flood.</p>\n<p>In terms of magnitude of discharge as well as of damages this was the most severe flood on record, with losses estimated by city and Iowa State University officials at over a million dollars. The most unfortunate loss involved the drowning of a young person.</p>\n<p>The peak discharge at the Squaw Creek station, 206 mi<sup>2</sup> (534 km<sup>2</sup>), was measured at 11,300 ft<sup>3</sup>/s (320 m<sup>3</sup>/s), which is 1.6 times the 100-year flood. The south Skunk River above the confluence with Squaw creek, 315 mi<sup>2</sup> (816 km<sup>2</sup>), peaked at 5,330 ft<sup>3</sup>/s (151 m<sup>3</sup>). The recurrence interval of this discharge is 6.0 years. This report is the second of a series that will present data collected in this study. Stream-discharge and water-quality data were collected at 53 sampling stations in the Redwood Creek and Mill Creek drainage basins. Measurements included the following variables: Stream stage and discharge; turbidity; sediment; onsite water-quality determinations of temperature, pH , total alkalinity, specific conductance, and dissolved-oxxygen concentration; chemical analyses of water samples for major dissolved solids, selected trace elements, nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic carbon; chemical analyses of bottom sediment for organic carbon and pesticides; bacteria; benthic invertebrates; fish; periphyton; phytoplankton; and seston. Additional data include changes in geometry at 10 stream-channel cross sections along Mill Creek and the distribution of erosional landforms in the Mill Creek drainage basin; quantity and chemical composition of rainwater; and the intragravel-streambed condition at selected stations in the Redwood Creek drainage basin. The Orca Group also probably underlies a large part of the Gulf of Alaska Tertiary province and the continental shelf south of the outcrop belt; coextensive rocks to the southwest on Kodiak Island are called the Ghost Rocks and Sitkalidak Formations. \r\n\r\nThe Orca Group was pervasively faulted, tightly folded, and metamorphosed regionally to laumontite and prehnite-pumpellyite facies prior to, and perhaps concurrently with, intrusion of early Eocene granodiorite and quartz monzonite plutons. \r\n\r\nIn eastern Prince William Sound, 95% of the Orca sedimentary rocks are interbedded feldspathic and lithofeldspathic sandstone, siltstone, and mudstone turbidites. Lithic components vary widely in abundance and composition, but labile sedimentary and volcanic grains dominate. A widespread yet minor amount of the mudstone is hemipelagic or pelagic, with scattered foraminifers. Pebbly mudstone with rounded clasts of exotic lithologies and locally conglomerate with angular blocks of deformed sandstone identical to the enclosing matrix are interbedded with the turbidites. \r\n\r\nThick and thin tabular bodies of altered tholeiitic basalt are locally and regionally conformable with the sedimentary rocks, and constitute 15-20% of Orca outcrops in eastern Prince William Sound. The basalt consists chiefly of pillowed and nonpillowed flows, but also includes minor pillow breccia, tuff, and intrusive rocks. Nonvolcanic turbidites are interbedded with the basalt; lenticular bioclastic limestone, red and green mudstone, chert, and conglomerate locally overlie the basalt, but are supplanted upward by turbidites. From west to east, basalts within the Orca Group become increasingly fragmental and amygdaloidal. Such textural changes probably indicate shallower water to the east. \r\n\r\nA radial distribution of paleocurrents and distinctive associations of turbidite facies within the sedimentary rocks suggest that the Orca Group in eastern Prince William Sound was deposited on a westward-sloping, complex deep-sea fan. Detritus was derived primarily from 'tectonized' sedimentary, volcanic, and plutonic rocks. RADB has been constructed such that a complete sample description (location, rock type, etc.), literature citation, and extensive analytical data are linked to form an independent record for each sample reported in a published work. Analytical data pertinent to the potassium-argon, rubidium-strontium, uranium-thorium-lead, lead-alpha, and fission-track methods can be accommodated, singly or in combinations, for each record. \r\n\r\nData processing is achieved using the GIPSY program (University of Oklahoma) which maintains the data file and builds, updates, searches, and prints the records using simple yet versatile command statements. Searching and selecting records is accomplished by specifying the presence, absence, or (numeric or alphabetic) value of any element of information in the data bank, and these specifications can be logically linked to develop sophisticated searching strategies. Output is available in the form of complete data records, abbreviated tests, or columnar tabulations. The hole is located 41 km west-northwest of Charleston near Clubhouse Corners, Figure 1, directly over a gravity and magnetic high and the possible hypocenter of the 1889 Charleston earthquake. Drilling began January 13, 1975, and the hole penetrated 750 meters of Cenozoic and Upper Cretaceous sedimentary rocks finally bottoming in 42 meters of amygdaloidal basalts. Core recovery was 70% in sedimentary formations and 100% in the basalts. Detailed systematic studies of the core and the area surrounding the borehole were presented at the Symposium: Geology and Geophysics of Charleston, South Carolina, Area, held at the annual meeting of the Northeastern and Southeastern sections of the Geological Society of America during the week of March 25-27, 1976.
