The distributions are expressed as functions of sample size, cross correlation, and skewness. In general, the distributions are more sensitive to cross correlation than to skewness. The work for this sfurth annual data report was done in cooperation with the National Park Service. Continuous recorders were used to monitor water levels in Devils Hole, three observation wells, and the flow from four springs. Also, monthly readings were made on two wells to help define a general trend of ground-water levels. Monthly meter readings of six electrically powered irrigation wells provided a record of power consumption, which in turn, is an index of the amount of water pumped. The purpose of the work is to observe the effects, if any, of ground-water withdrawals from specified irrigtion wells in the Ash Meadows area on (1) the water level in Devils Hole, and (2) the flow of four springs in the area. Fairbanks Spring and Big Spring, which are in the extreme northern and southern parts of Ash Meadows respectively, show little effect of pumping. An increase in the monthly average flow at Fairbanks Spring in September can be attributed to runoff and surficial recharge in the surrounding area caused by a large cloudburst. Jack Rabbit Spring, which is about 1 mile southwest of the major pumping field, is affected strongly by pumping. Jack Rabbit Spring flowed during the winter months but flowed very infrequently during non-winter months. Point of Rocks Spring had a flow pattern similar to Big Spring and Fairbanks Spring. All the springs had a general increase in flow during the Winter months. More than 90 percent of the project activity was directed toward the acquisition and processing of data for more than two thousand rainfall-runoff periods occurring during 1964-74 at the 104 project stations. Storm rainfall data were computed at 5-minute intervals from records of six long-term (about 75 years) National Weather Service Stations. The U.S. Geological Survey mathematical rainfall-runoff model is used to synthesize long-term flood records for about 80 percent of the project stations. Station flood-frequency data are developed, using the log-Pearson Type III distribution with regionalized skew coefficients. Multiple regression analysis is used to define relations between flood-frequency station data for small and large streams and 10 physical and climatological basin characteristics. The analysis indicates the drainage-basin size is the most significant variable. Five regions having distinct flood-peak characteristics are delineated. The developed relations, expressed as equations and nomographs, are considered usable for virtually any site in Georgia where the drainage area is between 0.1 and 20 square miles, and the flow is natural. The shallow system is composed of the unconsolidated deposits in the buried valley. The deep system is composed of bedrock, including anthracite coal, some of which has been removed by mining. Ground-water levels in the shallow system are affected by fluctuations in the stage of the Susquehanna River as far as 1 mile (1.609 kilometers) from the river. At greater distances, ground-water levels are controlled by local stream losses and ground-water conditions outside the study area. Ground-water levels in the deep system are also affected by fluctuations in the stage of the Susquehanna River. Significant vertical movement-of groundwater is probably occurring between the-shallow and deep systems. \r\n\r\nAreas of potential basement flooding by ground water are delineated on a depth-to-water map of the shallow system. Eight major problem areas are widely scattered throughout the study area. Although potential for basement flooding decreases as water levels decline seasonally, shallow ground-water levels in parts of the study area fluctuate so little that basement flooding can be a year-round problem.\r\n\r\nThe low relief of the study area and its proximity to the Susquehanna River favor a naturally high water level in the shallow system. In addition, two other factors probably contribute significantly to the basement flooding in all areas: recovery of water levels in the deep ground-water system following the cessation of deep mining and associated pumping, and land subsidence. \r\n\r\nThe following nonpumping methods of lowering the high water level in problem areas were evaluated: (1) gravity drainage wells, (2) gravity overflow wells (relief wells), (3) sealing of Toby Creek, and (4) a drainage ditch deep enough to intercept ground water moving into the study area from upgradient sources.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr76793","usgsCitation":"Growitz, D.J., 1976, Ground-water conditions in the Kingston area, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, and their effect on basement flooding: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-793, vi, 108 leaves :ill. Mex., have been accompanied by slight but progressive increases in the concentration of dissolved solids in water withdrawn from the aquifer. Projected water-level declines through 1996 are estimated from a digital simulation model to not exceed 200 feet (61 metres). A conceptual model of water quality provides three potential sources for water that is relatively high in dissolved solids: brine from the Tularosa Basin to the east, slightly saline water beneath the subjacent aquatard, and very slightly saline water from the less permeable units within the aquifer itself. Management of the well field to minimize drawdown and spread the cone of depression would minimize the rate of water-quality deterioration. A well designed monitoring network may provide advance warning of severe or rapid water-quality deterioration.. It was found, for the standard (30 Hz) NCER multiplex system, that subtractive compensation utilizing a 4688 Hz reference signal multiplexed onto each data track was more effective than that utilizing a 3125 Hz reference signal recorded separately on a different track. Moreover, it was found that the portion of the spectrum between the uppermost data channel (3060 Hz + or - 125 Hz) and the compensation reference signal (4688 Hz) could be used to record an additional timing signal, with a center frequency of 3700 Hz and a broader playback bandwidth (ca 0 to 100 Hz) than that of the standard data channels. Accordingly, for the tests described in that report, the standard 8-datachannel multiplex system was augmented by one additional timing channel with a center frequency of 3700 Hz. The 3700 Hz discriminator used in those tests was not successfully set up to utilize subtractive compensation; so its output from a tape playback was quite noisy.\r\n\r\nSubsequently, further tests have been carried out on the application of subtractive compensation to a 4-channel broad-band multiplex system and to the standard multiplex system, both recorded on field tape recorders with relatively poor tape speed control (2), (3). In the course of these experiments, it was discovered that two separate timing channe1s, not just one, can be inserted between the uppermost data channel and the compensation reference signal, Furthermore, it was possible to adjust the discriminators used to playback these timing channels so that they profited significantly from subtractive compensation even though the playback bandwidth was 0 to 100 Hz (for short rise times of square wave timing signals). The advantages of recording two timing signals on each data track include:\r\n\r\n1) one standard time signal to be used for critical timing, e.g. IRIG E, can be recorded with the data on each track, eliminating any problem that might arise from tape head misalignment if the timing base were recorded on a separate track from the data signals being timed,\r\n\r\n2) other essential timing signals e.g. WWVB and IRIG C, can each be recorded on several tracks, to insure more reliable recording through redundancy, without displacing data from standard data channels,\r\n\r\n3) the broader playback bandwidth of the special timing channels reproduces the sharp-edged timing codes with much less distortion than is obtained from the standard data channels.\r\n\r\nIn order to implement subtractive compensation with the 4688 Hz multiplexed signal and to record timing signals on the proposed special timing channels, it was necessary to design and build a signal generator/multiplexer unit. The functions of this unit are:\r\n\r\n1) generate a stable (x-tal controlled) compensation reference frequency (4688 Hz),\r\n\r\n2) generate two timing channel subcarriers (3500 Hz and 3950 Hz) and provide for their modulation by appropriate timing signals,\r\n\r\n3) separately, for each of th~14 tape tracks, adjust the relative levels of the timing and compensation subcarriers and multiplex them, at the appropriate level, with the incoming multiplexed data signals for introduction to the tape system direct record amplifiers. These units will be described in detail by Gray Jensen, who designed and built them, as well as being shown diagrammatically in this report.\r\n\r\nThis report continues the work described in reference (1), and it should be read as a supplement to that report rather than as an independent effort. It introduces changes in the multiplex system and test circuits employed in the tests and then repeats the tests from the earlier report that are required to illustrate the characteristics of the modified system. In this report, we study this problem by first deriving the differential equations governing seismic wave propagation between two end points in a 3-dimensional heterogeneous and isotropic medium. We then formulate three numerical schemes to solve the two-point ray-tracing problem. In the first method, introduced originally by R. L. Wesson, the second order ray equations are reduced by the central difference approximation to a set of simultaneous non-linear equations, which are then solved by Newton's method. In the second method, the second order ray equations are reduced to a set of first order equations which are solved by using an adaptive finite difference method introduced by M. Lentini and V. Pereyra. The third method, due originally to L. Euler uses a sum to approximate the integral for the travel time which are solved directly for the minimum time path. This formulation may be shown to be equivalent to Wesson's method.

We programed Wesson's method for a 3-dimensional inhomogeneous velocity medium, and also applied Lentini and Pereyra's method for a 2-dimensional linear velocity model. The coring penetrated as much as 310 meters below the sea floor at 19 sites along the continental margin from Georgia to Georges Bank off New England in water depths ranging from 20 to 300 meters; 1,020 meters of material were recovered in 380 cores, ranging in age from Late Cretaceous to Holocene. One of the major findings was the discovery of relatively fresh water (salinities less than 3 parts per thousand) extending beneath the Continental Shelf as much as 60 nautical miles seaward from the New Jersey coast. Water of about 1 part per thousand salinity was found beneath the shelf more than 7 nautical miles off Ocean City, Maryland and Barnegat Inlet, New Jersey. Analyses for light hydrocarbons in the cores show the highest concentrations (as much as 412,000 ppm) at sites in water depth greater than 200 meters (the shelf-slope break), principally in Pleistocene sediments, although methane concentrations greater than 400,000 ppm also were found in Miocene sediments at one site near the shelf edge.
