The McDermitt caldera, a major Miocene eruptive center is locatedin the northernmost Great Basin directly west of McDermitt, Nev. The alkali rhyolite of Jordan Meadow was erupted from the caldera and covered an area of about 60,000 sq km; the volume of rhyolite is about 960 cubic km.
Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks and Mesozoic granodiorite form the pre-Tertiary Basement in this area. Overlying these is a series of volcanic rocks, probably all of Miocene age. The lowest is a dacite welded tuff, a reddish-brown rock featuring abundant phenocrysts of plagioclase, hornblende, and biotite; next is a heterogeneous unit consisting of mocks ranging from basalt to dacite.
Overlying these is the basalt and andesite of Orevada View, over 700 m thick and consisting of a basal unit of cinder agglutinate overlain by basalt and andesite, much of which contains conspicuous large plagioclase phenocrysts.
Near Disaster Peak and Orevada View, the basalt and andesite are overlain by additional units of silicic volcanic rocks. The lower alkali rhyolite welded tuff contains abundant phenocrysts of alkali feldspar and has a vitric phase with obvious pumice and shard texture. The rhyolite of Little Peak consists of a wide variety of banded flows or welded ruffs and breccias, mostly containing abundant alkali feldspar phenocrysts. It extends south from Disaster Peak and apparently underlies the alkali rhyolite of Jordan Meadow. The quartz latite of Sage Creek lies north of Disaster Peak and consists mostly of finely mottled quartz latite with sparse minute plagioclase phenocrysts.
Volcanic rock units in the east part of the area near the Cordero mine include trachyandesite, quartz labile of McConnell Canyon, and rhyolite of McCormick Ranch. The trachyandesite is dark gray and contains less than 1 percent microphenocrysts plagioclase. It is the lowest unit exposed and may correlate with part of the basalt and andesite of Orevada View. The quartz latite of McConnell Canyon is olive gray and contains about 8 percent plagioclase phenocrysts. It has an upper phase of black vitrophyre which directly underlies The alkali rhyolite of Jordan Meadow. The rhyolite of McCormick Ranch is present farther north and consists of pinkish rhyolite with small amounts of phenocrysts of alkali feldspar, quartz, and plagioclase.
The alkali rhyolite of Jordan Meadow consists of interlayered aphyric, sparsely porphyritic, and abundantly porphyritic alkali rhyolites whose colors are predominantly light gray, greenish gray, and brown, respectively. Phenocrysts are alkali feldspar (to 15 percent) locally with quartz. Sections inside the caldera are as much as 360 m thick and consist of intimately interlayered gray, green, and brown alkali rhyolites commonly flow folded. Outside the caldera sections are equally thick in the south and southwest, but thinner to the north; in these places units of similar lithology are persistent for many kilometers, and flow folding is rare.
A basal green porphyritic unit north of the caldera contains definite shard texture, but elsewhere this feature is rare. Nevertheless, the great lateral extent and relative thinness of the alkali rhyolite of Jordan Meadow suggests that it is welded ash-flow tuff.
Overlying the alkali rhyolite of Jordan Meadow within the McDermitt caldera are four units of lavas. The rhyolite of Hoppin Peaks contains light-brownish-gray rhyolite and black vitophyre, all with sparse phenocrysts of alkali feldspar, quartz, and plagioclase. The rhyolite of McDermitt Creek is greenish or brownish gray and contains abundant phenocrysts of plagioclase. It .is in part structureless and in part flow banded. Alkali rhyolite of Washburn Creek is light gray and contains 0-5 percent phenocrysts alkali feldspar. Quartz labile of Black Mountain forms four isolated remnants of volcanoes in the south part of the caldera. It is brown where well crystallized and black where vitric and contains 5-15 percent plagioclase phenocrysts.
A unit of tuffaceous sedimentary rocks in part fills the caldera. A single occurrence of andesite is interbedded.

Field measurements included alkalinity , pH, specific conductance, temperature, and discharge. Samples were analyzed in the laboratory for major dissolved chemical constituents, selected plant nutrients, trace metals, suspended sediment, total organic carbon, and seston. Periphytic algae and benthic invertebrate samples were collected. A noticeable increase in the concentration of nitrogen was found in Roaring River immediately downstream from the Moraine Creek fire. The increase in the concentration of inorganic nitrogen compounds, however, was not great enough to pose a serious threat to the aquatic ecosystem. High total organic nitrogen concentrations may have been due, in part, to factors other than the effect of fire. The results of other water-quality measurements were typical of dilute Sierra Nevada streams and indicate that Roaring River was not adversely affected by the fires. An additional 10 to 15 million acre-feet (12,000 to 18,000 cubic hectometers) containing 1,000 to 3,000 milligrams per liter dissolved solids is estimated to be available for use in the future with appropriate desalinization. \r\n\r\nLower Cretaceous rocks crop out from Washington County on the north to Comanche County on-the south. The rocks dip from a structural high in the southwest part of the State to structural lows in the northwest and north-central part. Depth below land surface increases generally northwestward to about 2,600 feet (790 meters); thickness of the rocks increases westward, nearly zero to about 850 feet (260 meters). The rocks consist chiefly of marine to nonmarine shale and silt- stone interbedded with coastal to deltaic sandstone. The interbedded sandstone, which composes about one-third of the rocks, consists of one or more lenses that thicken westward to about 400 feet (120 meters) in the central part of western Kansas.\r\n\r\nThe yield of water to individual wells is related to areal extent, thickness, and interconnection of the sand lenses and to grain size and cementation of the sand. Large amounts of water may be pumped by wells where loosely cemented sand lenses are interconnected. Wells commonly yield adequate supplies for domestic and stock use; reported yields from municipal and irrigation wells range from about 100 to 2,000 gallons per minute (6 to 125 liters per second). \r\n\r\nRecharge to the Lower Cretaceous-rocks occurs in the area of outcrop and from hydraulically connected saturated Cenozoic rocks, especially in the southern part of the State. Movement of water is principally northeastward from areas of recharge to areas of discharge where streams intersect the sandstone outcrops. \r\n\r\nWater in the sandstone aquifers commonly is confined between beds of relatively impermeable shale, causing water in wells to rise above the top of the aquifer. Water levels fluctuate in response to changes in atmospheric pressure, recharge, and discharge; greatest fluctuations result from discharge to wells for municipal and irrigation use. Progressive declines in water levels have occurred where irrigation withdrawals exceed recharge. \r\n\r\nCalcium bicarbonate water is dominant near recharge areas; mixed sodium and calcium bicarbonate water and sodium chloride water become successively dominant as the water moves downgradient from the recharge areas. The quality of water ranges from fresh to very saline (less than 1.000 to 35,000 milligrams per liter dissolved solids). Most of the springs issue dilute to slightly saline sodium-bicarbonate waters of neutral to slightly alkaline pH. A few of the springs issue sodium-mixed anion waters of near neutral pH. Fluoride concentrations are high in most of the thermal waters, up to 18 milligramsper litre, while F/Cl ratios range from 3/1 in the dilute waters to 1/10 in the slightly saline waters. Most of the springs are theoretically in thermodynamic equilibrium with respect to calcite and fluorite. Nitrogen is the major gas escaping from most of the hot springs; however, Hunters Hot Springs issue principally methane. The deuterium content of the hot spring waters is typical of meteoric water in western Montana. \r\n\r\nGeothermal calculations based on silica concentrations and Na-K-Ca ratios indicate that most of the springs are associated with low temperature aquifers (less than 100?C). As land-use patterns change and further urbanization takes place, it is anticipated that these data will serve as a basis for comparison of conditions in the future. The 13 basins encompass a total drainage area of 1,812 km2 (697 mi2) of the 1,976 km2 (760 mi2) within Chester County. Four of the streams are tributaries to the Schuylkill River and include Pickering, Stony Run, Pigeon, and French Creek. Tributaries to the Delaware River include Darby, Crum, Ridley, Chester, Red Clay, and White Clay Creeks. The Elk Creeks flow into the Chesapeake Bay. The Brandywine is a tributary to the Christiana River, itself a tributary to the Delaware. The Octoraro Creek is a tributary to the Susquehanna River. Chester County, which is located in the Piedmont area of Pennsylvania, is undergoing rapid transition from a rural to suburban condition as the population increases.
\nThis basic-data report contains the chemical, physical, and biological information collected for the period fall 1969 through fall 1974. The network of 50 stations is shown in figure 1, which is followed by a listing (table 1) of station numbers and a brief description of station locations. Table 2 shows the physical, chemical, and bacteriological data collected by station and date. Table 3 shows the benthic invertebrate data collected by station and date.

An inventory of lakes and reservoirs of Oregon is essential for a complete evaluation of the total surface-water supply of the State and to provide a basis for answering questions about Oregon's lakes. Much of the information on lakes and reservoirs previously collected by Federal and State agencies has never been published. Those data were compiled and used as a basis for collecting additional information. This report provides information for use by city, county, and State planning groups as well as for sportsmen, tourists, and others interested in preserving the recreational value of Oregon's lakes.
Because of the large number of lakes and reservoirs in Oregon, a single report covering the State would be bulky. Therefore, the lake information is being issued in several volumes on a county or multicounty basis. Volume 1, released in 1973, covered Clatsop, Columbia, and Tillamook Counties; volume 2 (1974 included Benton, Lincoln, and Polk Counties; and volume 3 (1975) included Hood River, Multnomah, Washington, and Yamhill Counties. Clackamas County was selected for volume 4. (See figure 1.)
In addition to office compilation of existing data, each lake was visited. Most visits were made in summer or early fall when lakes were most accessible and when water temperature and biological activity were near maximum.
