S. Geological Survey Saudi Arabian Project, is used to collect spectral gamma-radiation data as an aid to regional geologic mapping of pediment areas on the Arabian Shield. The areal extent of rock units can generally be distinguished by the intensity of their radiation pattern. Two areas of anomalously high concentrations of uranium have been discovered in conglomeratic zones that are interpreted as paleochannels. Wells tapping some limestone and dolomite aquifers produce as much as 1.4 mgd (million gallons per day). Wells completed in sandstone of the Pottsville Formation underlying lower topographic areas may produce as much as 0.3 mgd, but those completed in sandstone underlying higher topographic areas produce lesser quantities. \r\n\r\nSurface-water resources were appraised by use of average flow and 7-day Q2 (median annual 7-day minimum flow).An average flow of about 640 mgd or about 1 mgd per square mile originates in the county. Streamflow during low flow conditions is small; only three streams have 7-day Q2's that exceed 2 mgd. Estimates of storage requirements are provided for sustained draft rates of 25 to 50 percent of the average flow.\r\n\r\nWater from aquifers and streams in Blount County is generally of suitable chemical quality for most uses. The beds are steeply dipping, sometimes overturned and faulted, and have an average thickness of 8 feet.</p><p>Detailed mineralogical and chemical analyses were made on chip-channel samples from four sections of the laterite in the vicinity of the village of Ziarat. One of the sections, 9 1/2 miles southeast of Ziarat, is 21 feet thick and has an average content of 42 percent available alumina, 3.6 percent silica, and 31 percent Fe<sub>2</sub>0<sub>3</sub>. The other sections have an average available alumina content of less than 32 percent. Large-scale development of these reserves would place a heavy demand on the area 's limited water resources. Surface water is poorly distributed in time and space. Its use for coal development in parts of the area would require storage reservoirs and distribution systems, whereas in the rest of the area surface water is fully appropriated and its use would deprive present users of their supply. Preliminary studies by the U.S. Geological Survey and State agencies in Wyoming, Montana, and South Dakota indicate that the Madison Limestone and associated rocks might provide a significant percentage of the total water requirements for coal development. This report briefly summarized the present knowledge of the geohydrology of the Madison and associated rocks, identifies the need for additional data, and outlines a 5-year plan for a comprehensive study of the hydrology of these rocks. The Black Warrior and Sipsey Rivers, the largest streams in the county, have average flows of 5,230 mgd and 580 mgd, respectively, where they leave the county, and median annual 7-day low flows in excess of 150 mgd and 35 mgd, respectively. North River, Big Sandy Creek, and Hurricane Creek have average flows in excess of 100 mgd and median annual 7-day low flows in excess of 2 mgd.\r\n\r\nSurface water generally contains less than 100 mg/l (milligrams per liter) dissolved solids, less than 10 mg/l chloride, and is soft to moderately hard. This area could contain from 0.3 to 1.4 billion barrels of oil and from 0.6 to 2.7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas depending upon the statistical confidence level indicated.</p><p>The known geology of this submerged area, is extrapolated to the offshore from onshore data. The sedimentary rocks are as old as Triassic and as young as Pleistocene. The Mesozoic strata include volcanic rocks, volcanoclastic and marine clastic sediments. Tertiary, rocks from which the oil and gas in Upper Cook Inlet are produced, consist of nonmarine conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone and coal. The potential objective section for oil and gas in this OCS area ranges from Middle Jurassic through the Tertiary.</p><p>The present structural configuration of this area is a northeast trending trough filled with Tertiary sediments. The trough is flanked by two major faults, the Bruin Bay fault on the northwest and the Border Ranges fault on the southeast. Between these faults is the OCS area containing anticlinal structures and faults which may be traps for hydrocarbons.</p><p>Potential geologic hazards are present in this area. It is an area of intense tectonism expressed as seismic activity (earthquakes) and volcanic eruptions which produce many natural disturbances including tsunamis. Samples of oil shale from two drill cores and one composite sample from the Colony mine were split and studied by X-ray diffraction methods to determine their bulk mineralogy. Oil yield data were obtained for these samples by conventional Fischer assay analysis and samples of the spent oil shale were studied by X-ray diffraction to determine the changes which resulted from pyrolysis. The amounts of Na<sub>2</sub>O, Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, and SiO<sub>2</sub> extractable from 31 spent oil-shale samples were determined using hot distilled water, hot 0.1M KOH, and hot 0.5M KOH as solvents. Extractable Al<sub>2</sub>O and SiO<sub>2</sub> were also determined for the 31 spent oil-shale samples using hot 0.1M NaOH and hot 0.5M NaOH.</p><p>Correlation of the relative abundance of analcime--Na[Al, Si<sub>2</sub>O<sub>6</sub>]. H<sub>2</sub>0-- in raw oil-shale samples with the amounts of Na<sub>2</sub>O, Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, and SiO<sub>2</sub> extracted from pyrolyzed oil shale demonstrates that analcime contributes significantly to all of these elements after it has been subjected to pyrolysis. Because of the large contribution of SiO<sub>2</sub> extractable from pyrolyzed analcime-bearing oil shale using caustic solvents, there may be significant problems in obtaining leachates high in Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>content and low in SiO<sub>2</sub> content where analcime is present with dawsonite--NaAl(OH)<sub>2</sub>CO<sub>3</sub>. This consideration is important to assessment of potential aluminum resources in oil shale. However, between 1953 and 1958, five oil test holes penetrated the coal and revealed that coal underlies a large part of the Lakhra anticline.</p><p>The Geological Survey of Pakistan began core drilling in 1961 to determine the extent and thickness of the shallower coal beds. By May 19630 25 borings had been completed. The Lailian coal bed was penetrated in borings over a distance of 5 miles from east to west and 11 miles from north to south, commonly at depths of less than 150 feet. The Lailian bed ranges in thickness from 2.6 to 8.4 feet; total reserves are estimated to be 130,000,000 tons.
