The designated area, offshore of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, encompasses parts of three physiographic provinces: the Continental Shelf, the Florida-Hatteras Slope, and the Blake Plateau.

The structural framework of the U.3. South Atlantic region is dominated by the Southeast Georgia Embayment --an east-plunging depression recessed into the Atlantic Coastal Plain and shelf between Cape Fear, North Carolina and Jacksonville, Florida. The embayment is bounded to the north by the Cape Fear Arch and to southeast by the Peninsular Arch.

Refraction data indicate a minor basement(?) ridge beneath the outer shelf between 30° and 32°N at 80°W. Drill hole data also suggest a gentle fold or accretionary structure (reef?) off the east coast of Florida. Several other structural features have been identified by refraction and reflection techniques and drilling. These are the Yamacraw Uplift, Burton High, Stone Arch, and the Suwannee Channel.

Gravity and magnetic anomalies within the area probably result from emplacement of magma bodies along linear features representing fundamental crustal boundaries. Of these anomalies, the most prominent, is a segment of the East Coast Magnetic Anomaly which crosses the coast at Brunswick, Georgia. This anomaly has been interpreted as representing an ancient continental boundary where two formerly separate continental plates collided and were welded together.

There may be as much as 5,000 m of sedimentary rocks in the Southeast Georgia Embayment out to the 600 m isobath. Basement rocks beneath the Southeast Georgia Embayment are expected to be similar to those exposed in the Appalachian Piedmont province. Triassic deposits are likely to exist beneath the inner Continental Shelf, and probably consist of nonmarine arkosic sandstones, shales, basalt flows, and diabase intrusions deposited in relatively narrow northeast-trending grabens. Jurassic marine carbonates in the Bahamas grade northward to carbonates, shales, sand, and arkose in North Carolina. Salt may be present in the basal Jurassic section in the Southeast Georgia Embayment. Up to 4,000 m of Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous rocks are expected out to the 600 m water depth. Lower Cretaceous rocks in southern Florida are shallow-water marine limestone and dolomites with beds of anhydrite. In coastal North Carolina the Lower Cretaceous is a marine section made up of shales, sand, and sandy limestone. The Upper Cretaceous is composed almost entirely of marine carbonates in southern Florida grading northward to nonmarine to marginal marine, sandstones and shales with minor amounts of carbonates. In general, Upper Cretaceous rocks will probably maintain a fairly constant thickness (600 m) on the Continental Shelf and grade downdip from terrigeneous sands and shales to more marine chalks, limestones, and dolomites. The Cenozoic rocks are predominantly shallow-water marine carbonates in Florida grading northward into a marginal marine to marine clastic facies composed of sands, marls, and limestones. The offshore Cenozoic section is expected to range in thickness from 600 to 1100 m.

","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr75411","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1975, Sediments, structural framework, petroleum potential, environmental conditions, and operational considerations of the United States South Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-411, Report: vii, 262 p.; 1 Sheet: 16.88 x 32.94 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75411.","productDescription":"Report: vii, 262 p.; 1 Sheet: 16.88 x 32.94 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":36147,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0411/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36148,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0411/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141028,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0411/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":404154,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_15175.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida, Georgia, South Carolina","otherGeospatial":"South Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -78.55224609374999,\n              33.8430453147447\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.12353515625,\n              33.4039312002347\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.22241210937499,\n              33.09614359735857\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.837646484375,\n              32.713355353177555\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.1285400390625,\n              31.522361470421437\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.419677734375,\n              30.755998458321667\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.243896484375,\n              29.850173125689896\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.76599121093749,\n              28.86872905602898\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.452880859375,\n              28.70986084394286\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.07958984375,\n              28.748396571187406\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.6895751953125,\n              29.176145182559758\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.937744140625,\n              33.137551192346145\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.6793212890625,\n              33.82023008524739\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.92626953125,\n              33.87041555094183\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.02490234375,\n              33.8339199536547\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.55224609374999,\n              33.8430453147447\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ae4b07f02db5fbad0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":528874,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Results of most of this research effort have been published or otherwise released and references to them are in lists of publications of the Geological Survey. Hydrogeological field studies currently underway evaluate bedded salt deposits in New Mexico and Utah, a salt dome in the Gulf Coast region, and shales in the Rocky Mountain area for their potential as host geological formations for high-level waste repositories. Detailed field studies of the potential migration of waste nuclides from shallow land burial sites of low-level waste in Idaho and Tennessee are also underway.

As a part of its own research program, the Geological Survey has initiated geochemical and digital model studies of waste transport at four of its research centers. At the same time field studies on the hydrogeology of four state-owned low-level radioactive solid waste burial grounds are being made to provide the field observations of waste migration needed to test the theoretical and laboratory approaches. Hydrogeological criteria will be developed for use in the selection of future radioactive waste disposal sites.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr75626","usgsCitation":"DeBuchananne, G.D., and Twenhofel, W.S., 1975, United States Geological Survey's hydrogeological research programs and plans related to disposal of radioactive waste into geologic formations: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-626, ii, 23 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75626.","productDescription":"ii, 23 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":465848,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0626/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141670,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0626/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho, New Mexico, Tennessee, Utah","otherGeospatial":"Gulf Coast, Rocky Mountains","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a25e4b07f02db60efbf","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"DeBuchananne, George D.","contributorId":10040,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"DeBuchananne","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157893,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Twenhofel, William Stephens","contributorId":15597,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Twenhofel","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"Stephens","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157894,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Water for municipal, industrial, and irrigation supplies generally can be obtained in limited quantities from the alluvial deposits in the stream valleys. Except for water in the alluvial deposits in the stream valleys and in the outcrop areas of the bedrock aquifers, the groundwater is generally of poor chemical quality. Owing to the generally poor chemical quality of water and low yields to wells, an increase in the use of ground water from the consolidated rocks is improbable.

The unconsolidated rocks in the Verdigris River basin receive about 166,000 acre-feet of recharge annually, and about 1 million acre-fee of water is in temporary storage in the deposits. In 1968 about 4,200 acre-feet of ground was withdrawn for all uses. About 800 acre-feet of ground and 5,000 acre-feet of surface water were pumped for irrigation of 5,300 acres of cropland. This proposed operating plan could be followed successfully most of the time. Some periods of low flow, mainly in winter, would require drawdowns below the minimum stage to maintain minimum discharge. Evidence is presented to show that coal was deposited in a series of unconnected swamps or marshes.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr75274","usgsCitation":"Fritz, E.B., and Khan, M., 1975, Stratigraphy and paleontology of coal beds in the Ghazij Shale, Sor Range-Daghari Coal Field, Quetta Division, Pakistan: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-274, ii, 16 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75274.","productDescription":"ii, 16 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141116,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0274/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":431400,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0274/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"Pakistan","city":"Quetta","otherGeospatial":"Sor Range-Daghari Coal Field, Quetta Division","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              66.91951500116298,\n              30.2395965770682\n            ],\n            [\n              66.91951500116298,\n              30.125524893389226\n            ],\n            [\n              67.09358096091108,\n              30.125524893389226\n            ],\n            [\n              67.09358096091108,\n              30.2395965770682\n            ],\n            [\n              66.91951500116298,\n              30.2395965770682\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a8cc8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fritz, Edward B.","contributorId":57067,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fritz","given":"Edward","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158553,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Khan, M.R.","contributorId":21160,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Khan","given":"M.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158552,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Annual-peak-flow data from stream gaging stations on unregulated streams having 1 years or more of record were used to determine a log-Pearson Type III frequency curve for each station. Flood magnitudes having recurrence intervals of 2, 5, i0, 25, 50, and 10years were then related to physical and climatic indices of the drainage basins by multiple-regression analysis using the Biomedical Computer Program BMDO2R. These regression relations are useful for estimating flood magnitudes of the specified recurrence intervals at ungaged or short-record sites. \r\n\r\nSeparate sets of regression equations were defined for western and eastern parts of the State, and the State was further subdivided into 12 regions in which the annual floods\r\nexhibit similar flood characteristics. Peak flows are related most significantly in western Washington to drainage-area size and mean annual precipitation. In eastern Washington-they are related most significantly to drainage-area size, mean annual precipitation, and percentage of forest cover. Standard errors of estimate of the estimating relations range from 25 to 129 percent, and the smallest errors are generally associated with the more humid regions.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey [Water Resources Division],","doi":"10.3133/ofr74336","usgsCitation":"Cummans, J., Collings, M.R., and Nasser, E.G., 1975, Magnitude and frequency of floods in Washington: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 74-336, v, 46 p. :maps ;27 cm.; (90 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr74336.","productDescription":"v, 46 p. :maps ;27 cm.; (90 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":108598,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_15049.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"15049"},{"id":146139,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0336/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":41605,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0336/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":41606,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0336/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":41607,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0336/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":41608,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0336/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a80e4b07f02db649562","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cummans, J. Possibly some U(VI) occurs as U04-2 groups. Uranium is readily removed from apatite by weathering, and enrichment of phosphate after deposition may be entirely residual, as in the case of the brown rock deposits of Tennessee, or uranium may be added as in the case of the lateritic weathering of the deposits in Florida.

Uranium has been recovered as a byproduct of the manufacture of phosphoric acid by the wet process. In 1972, about 15 million tons of phosphate rock was used to make phosphoric acid in the United States. This phosphoric acid probably contained about 1500 tons of uranium. An additional 10 million tons, worldwide, was made into phosphoric acid, and thus, 1000 tons of uranium was in solution. Increased demand for phosphatic fertilizers and increases in the amount of phosphate rock used to make phosphoric acid makes it likely that tonnages of uranium in phosphoric acid will reach 5000 tons per year within the next 25 years. The study covered all or parts of 21 counties and included data for 28 sediment-sampling stations located in parts of 4 major river basins, the Roanoke, Pamlico, Neuse, and Cape Fear. Annual suspended-sediment yields ranged from 333 to 12 tons per square mile (117 to 4.2 tonnes per square kilometre). Streams in the Piedmont region have the highest yields. Suspended-sediment yield decreases in an eastward direction from the Piedmont to the Coastal Plain region.

Sediment characteristics are directly affected by topography, storm runoff, geology, land use, and man-made detention structures. At one sampling station in the 1973 water year 44 percent of the suspended sediment tonnage was transported during 34 days of high flow. In the Piedmont region, sediment yields vary indirectly with the percentage of forest cover in the basin, but there appears to be no definite relationship between forest cover and yield in the Coastal Plain region. Large lakes act as sediment-detention reservoirs. Average annual sediment yields ranged from 98 to 333 tons per square mile (34 to 117 tonnes per square kilometre) for 3 headwater streams which flow into Hyco Lake in Person County; however, the yield for the station less than 2 miles (3.2 kilometres) downstream from Hyco Dam was about 12 tons per square mile (4.2 tonnes per square kilometre).

Most suspended sediment during floods in Piedmont streams ranges in size from sand to silt, whereas the suspended material in flooding streams in the Coastal Plain is generally clay size.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
