C. Jaeger (ANU) and J. H. Sass (USGS). Most samples were collected during the periods June through September, 1971 and 1972. The measurements were made subsequently by two of us (C. M. Bunker and C. A. Bush) using the gamma-ray spec trometric techniques described by Bunker and Bush (1966, 1967). Interpreting the spectra for quantitative analyses of the radioelements was accomplished with an iterative leastsquares computer program modified from one by Schonfeld (1966). Uranium content determined by gamma-ray spectrometry is based on a measurement of the daughter products of <sup>226</sup>Ra. Equilibrium in the uranium-decay series was assumed for these analyses . Throughout the report, when U content is stated, radium-equivalent uranium is implied. The coefficient of variation for the accuracy of the radioelement data, when compared to ana lyses by isotope dilution and flame photometry is about 3 percent for radium-equivalent uranium and thorium and about 1 percent for potassium. These percentages are in addition to minimum standard deviations of about 0.05 ppm for U and Th, and about 0.03 percent for K.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological These include magmatic and late magmatic deposits in igneous masses, contact metamorphic deposits along the margins of igneous bodies, and stratiform sulfide deposits and veins. Notable deposits of sedimentary origin include deposits of iron oxides and phosphate.</p>\n<p>Strata-bound massive sulfide deposits containing copper, zinc, and nickel sulfides associated with pyrite and pyrrhotite in complexly deformed volcanic rocks in Saudi Arabia have been the subject of controversy. They are considered by some geologists to be of syngenetic or volcanogenic origin, and by others to be epigenetic.</p>\n<p>The principal mineral deposits in western Saudi Arabia are localized in mineral belts within tectonic zones that trend northerly, northeasterly, and northwesterly. These belts contain the exploration target areas most promising for future exploration. Noteworthy among these are: 1) the northerly-trending Bidah copper-zinc belt; 2) the Sayid copper-zinc zone; 3) the northwest-trending Nuqrah copper zinc-silver belt; and 4) the north-northwesterly-trending Al Amar belt. Gold and silver deposits are mainly localized in north-trending structural features of the Hijaz geotectonic cycle and northwest Najd trends.</p>\n<p>Saudi Arabian metal deposits known thus far contain reserves in the 2 billion dollar range. Further exploration should result in discoveries that could significantly increase this amount; Saudi Arabia may well have workable metallic and nonmetallic mineral resources for industrial developments in many parts of the Kingdom.</p>\n<p>In order to effectively carry on a search for new mineral deposits, the belts should be mapped in detail, with emphasis on the delineation of stratigraphic and structural features that control metallization. In addition, geochemical and geophysical studies should be made of promising areas to outline exploration targets. Surface waters within the watershed were calcium bicarbonate types with very similar concentrations of major dissolved constituents and specific conductance values. Streamwaters contained less than 0.26 milligram per litre dissolved nitrate (as N), 0.03 milligram per litre or less dissolved phosphate (as P), and from 4.8 to 5.9 milligrams per litre dissolved organic carbon. Fecal coliform bacteria concentrations were between 220 and 1,400 colonies per 100 millilitres and fecal streptococci concentrations ranged between 85 and 330 colonies per 100 millilitres. Bed material in lower Jordan Creek contained dieldrin, DDD, and DDE in concentrations less than 0.6 microgram per kilogram. A reasonably good biologic diversity index of 2.9 was found in a lower Jordan Creek sampling site. The benthic community was dominated by midge larvae. Nutrients were resampled November 7, 1974. Surface waters within the watershed were calcium bicarbonate types with very similar concentrations of major dissolved constituents. Samples collected June 13 contained between 7.4 and 14 milligrams per litre dissolved nitrate (as N), between 0.05 and 1.3 milligrams per litre dissolved phosphate (as P), and between 2.3 to 4.0 milligrams per litre dissolved organic carbon. Samples collected November 7 contained less than 0.22 milligrams per litre dissolved nitrate (as N). The concentrations of fecal coliform bacteria ranged from 450 to 14,000 colonies per 100 millilitres. The concentrations of fecal streptococci bacteria ranged from 600 to 8,500 colonies per 100 millilitres. The bed materials of an upper Rock Creek site contained moderately high concentrations of dieldrin and chlordane (17 and 19 micrograms per kilogram, respectively) and also contained less than 6 micrograms per kilogram aldrin, DDD, heptachlor epoxide, and PCB's. Bed materials in a lower Rock Creek site contained less than 4.2 micrograms per kilogram of all the above compounds except PCB's. Biologic diversity indices of 2.7 and 2.2, which do not typify healthy benthic communities, were found in the upper and lower Rock Creek sampling sites, respectively. The benthic communities were dominated by midge larvae at both sites.
